For an authentic PS1-style image, start with 4:3 aspect-ratio correction, integer scaling, nearest-neighbor texture filtering, dithering enabled, and native or deliberately low internal resolution. Disable modern sharpening, heavy anti-aliasing, bloom, and temporal reconstruction. Raise resolution only when text or geometry becomes difficult to read, and change one setting at a time so you can tell whether clarity, frame pacing, or latency improved.
Recommended baseline settings
Use this as the first pass in an emulator, a retro-styled indie game, or a PC port that exposes comparable options. A title may not provide every control, so apply only the settings it actually offers.

Why PS1-style graphics look the way they do
The recognizable appearance is not just a low texture resolution. Libretro’s Beetle PSX HW documentation describes original PSX 3D rendering as affine texture mapping: texture coordinates are interpolated between polygon vertices in two-dimensional screen space without considering object depth. That process creates the texture warping and swimming seen across angled surfaces. The same documentation discusses fixed-point vertex rounding, 16-bit color, dithering, and selectable texture filters.
Modern hardware can render the same assets at a much higher resolution, but doing so removes some of the rounding, banding, and unstable texture behavior that people associate with the era. A convincing recreation therefore depends on the combination of geometry resolution, color treatment, filtering, and display scaling—not on one “retro” toggle.

Set the display shape before anything else
Use 4:3 correction for a period-accurate composition
Enable the option usually labelled 4:3 correction, correct aspect ratio, or preserve aspect ratio. On a 16:9 monitor, the game should appear with vertical black bars. Circles remain circular, characters keep their intended proportions, and room layouts do not become unnaturally wide.
Official support documentation for aspect-ratio correction explains that preserving the ratio prevents a 16:9 presentation from being stretched horizontally. If correction is disabled, every horizontal measurement is expanded to fill the panel. That can look convenient at a glance but changes the composition of every camera angle.
When widescreen is reasonable
Some modern PC releases are authored for widescreen and may offer a native 16:9 mode, selectable resolutions, or a separate widescreen camera. In those cases, use the developer’s intended mode rather than forcing a 4:3 presentation. For an originally 4:3 game, widescreen stretching is a preference, not an authenticity setting.
Choose integer scaling or fit scaling
Integer scaling for square pixels
Integer scaling enlarges the source image by whole-number multiples. A source pixel becomes a 2-by-2, 3-by-3, or larger block instead of being blended with neighboring pixels. This keeps edges crisp and prevents uneven pixel widths.
Integer scaling may leave unused space around the image, especially when the source resolution does not fit your monitor at a whole-number multiple. That empty space is the trade-off for consistent pixel geometry. It is usually the best choice when your priority is an unmistakably low-resolution image.
Fit scaling for a larger picture
Fit, stretched, or fractional scaling enlarges the image until it occupies more of the display. Depending on the scaler, pixels may no longer be uniform squares, and filtering may soften the result. Choose it when a small integer-scaled window is uncomfortable or when you value screen coverage over strict geometry.

Keep aspect-ratio correction enabled while testing fit scaling. The two controls solve different problems: aspect correction protects the shape of the scene, while scaling controls how the correctly shaped image is enlarged.

Nearest filtering
Set texture filtering to nearest when you want the strongest original-hardware impression. Each texture sample uses the closest texel, producing visible square boundaries and hard transitions. Pixel-art interfaces, low-resolution signs, and blocky environmental textures retain their intentional structure.
Bilinear and 3-point filtering
Bilinear filtering blends neighboring texels. 3-point filtering is another smoothing method documented in retro rendering options. Both reduce the harsh pixel grid and can make camera movement feel less noisy, but they also blur small details and soften the edges that make the style recognizable.
Use these modes when nearest filtering causes distracting shimmer, when you sit close to a large monitor, or when you prefer a softer reinterpretation. They are not “wrong”; they simply move the result away from strict pixel preservation.
SABR, xBR, and JINC2
Retro renderers may offer SABR, xBR, or JINC2. These algorithms attempt to upscale or sharpen textures rather than reproduce the simplest nearest-neighbor sample. They generally require more processing and produce a cleaner, more interpreted image. Select one only when you specifically want enhanced texture fidelity and have confirmed that frame pacing remains stable.

Why dithering belongs in an authentic preset
The PSX’s 16-bit color output could show visible banding in gradients and dark areas. Original hardware used dithering—small patterned variations between neighboring pixels—to make those transitions appear smoother. With dithering enabled, fog, shadows, and flat walls can show the characteristic grain or checkerboard pattern of the period.

Keep dithering on if your goal is historical appearance. It may look noisy on a modern high-resolution display, particularly in large areas of one color, but removing that pattern also removes a real part of the original rendering pipeline.
When disabling it makes sense
If a renderer offers 32-bit color, disabling dithering produces a cleaner modern image with smoother gradients. That can improve readability and reduce visual noise, especially in a dark game, but it is a stylistic compromise. Treat the 32-bit, no-dither combination as a clarity preset rather than a faithful PS1 recreation.
Internal resolution: preserve artifacts or improve readability
Native or low resolution
Start at native resolution, often labelled 1x, or at the lowest deliberate setting available. Low internal resolution preserves jagged polygon edges, coarse texture detail, and the limited pixel structure that defines the look. It is the right baseline for testing whether your other settings are working.

Higher internal resolution
Increasing internal resolution renders the scene’s geometry on a denser grid. Text, inventory icons, and distant objects become easier to read, and polygon edges appear cleaner. The result can still use 4:3 correction, nearest filtering, and dithering, but it will no longer match native pixelation exactly.
Beetle PSX HW documents internal-resolution rendering and optional supersampling that downsamples to native output. Supersampling can clean up edges while retaining some low-resolution character, but it trades away part of the rough native appearance. Treat it as a middle ground, not as a free authenticity upgrade.
Post-processing and modern PC-port options
Disable modern sharpening, heavy anti-aliasing, bloom, and temporal reconstruction for your first pass. These effects are designed to make contemporary high-resolution rendering appear cleaner or more cinematic; they can erase dithering, soften deliberate pixel edges, or introduce a moving reconstruction layer that was not present in the original style.

There is no universal post-processing preset for every PS1-inspired game. A modern port may expose options that an emulator does not, and an indie game may implement its own look with entirely different labels. Use the baseline controls where available, then adjust post-processing only for a visible problem such as unreadable text, excessive shimmer, or uncomfortable darkness.
For example, PlayStation’s official PC feature information for Until Dawn lists selectable resolution and frame-rate targets together with DLSS and FSR support. Those are modern-port controls, not evidence that every PS1-style game should use upscaling or temporal reconstruction. If your title provides DLSS or FSR, leave it off while establishing the retro baseline; test it afterward only if you prefer the resulting clarity and it does not disturb frame pacing.

- Open the game’s graphics or renderer menu. Identify every option related to aspect ratio, scaling, filtering, dithering, color depth, internal resolution, anti-aliasing, sharpening, bloom, and reconstruction.
- Set the image shape. Enable 4:3 correction or preserve-aspect-ratio mode unless the game was authored for widescreen.
- Set the scaler. Choose integer scaling. If the resulting image is too small, test fit scaling while leaving aspect correction on.
- Select nearest filtering. Confirm the texture edges are hard rather than blended.
- Enable dithering. If a 16-bit or dither option exists, turn it on for the authentic preset.
- Choose native or low internal resolution. Inspect a character model, a wall texture, and small menu text so you can see the pixel structure clearly.
- Check motion. Walk through a scene with diagonal surfaces and moving shadows. Look for texture warping, shimmer, and uneven frame pacing.
- Raise resolution only when necessary. Increase internal resolution one step at a time if text, inventory icons, or geometry are too difficult to read.
- Test softer filtering only if desired. Compare nearest with bilinear or 3-point in the same scene. Keep the mode that matches your preference without introducing distracting blur.
- Review latency and frame pacing. After every major change, move the camera and perform a few inputs. A visually attractive setting is not an improvement if it adds stutter or makes controls feel delayed.

Authenticity, clarity, and performance trade-offs
Every setting choice falls along several independent axes. Nearest filtering maximizes pixel sharpness, while bilinear and 3-point filtering trade sharpness for softness. Dithering preserves visible color patterns, while 32-bit no-dither output looks cleaner. Native internal resolution preserves low-resolution artifacts, while higher resolution improves geometric clarity. Correct 4:3 composition preserves the intended frame, while a filled widescreen image sacrifices proportions for display coverage.
These choices do not form a single quality ladder. A higher internal resolution is not automatically better, and a softer filter is not automatically more authentic. Decide whether your priority is historical appearance, legibility, or a comfortable image on your particular monitor, then select the least aggressive change that solves the problem.
Troubleshooting common results
The image looks stretched
Re-enable 4:3 or preserve-aspect-ratio correction. Check the display driver’s scaling mode as well as the game menu; a driver-level “fill” setting can stretch an otherwise correct 4:3 signal.

Switch from fit or fractional scaling to integer scaling. Then select nearest filtering. If the display still blurs the image, check whether the monitor is applying its own sharpness, smoothing, or scaling mode.
The game looks too clean to be PS1-like
Lower internal resolution, switch to nearest filtering, enable dithering, and turn off sharpening and heavy anti-aliasing. Check that a modern upscaler or reconstruction option is not still active.
Text is difficult to read
Raise internal resolution one step, or use the readable-authenticity preset. Avoid immediately enabling every enhancement; first identify whether the problem is low-resolution geometry, a blurred filter, or poor contrast.
Textures shimmer during movement
Confirm that frame pacing is stable, then compare nearest with 3-point or bilinear filtering. A softer filter may reduce shimmer, but it also changes the texture character. If the renderer offers supersampling, test it at a modest setting and watch for added latency or performance problems.

The pattern may be authentic dithering from a 16-bit color treatment. Turn dithering off only if the noise interferes with play, and recognize that the result is a cleaner 32-bit interpretation.
The game has no matching options
Use the controls the title actually exposes. A modern PC port may provide selectable resolution, frame-rate targets, DLSS, or FSR but no emulator-style dithering or integer scaler. In that case, preserve the aspect ratio, choose the least processed image available, and avoid forcing settings through external tools unless you understand the side effects.
Per-game checklist
- Is the original or intended composition 4:3, or is this a native widescreen release?
- Does the game provide integer scaling, fit scaling, or only a window-size selector?
- Are nearest, bilinear, 3-point, SABR, xBR, or JINC2 filters available?
- Can dithering or color depth be changed?
- Does internal resolution affect geometry, menus, or only the final output?
- Are supersampling, anti-aliasing, sharpening, bloom, DLSS, or FSR enabled by default?
- After each change, are frame pacing and input latency still comfortable?
The most reliable workflow is to establish the strict period preset first, capture how it looks in a representative room, and then make one deliberate change at a time. That gives you a clear reference instead of stacking filters until the source of the visual change is impossible to identify.
