Best Graphics Settings for Abiotic Factor on PC (2026 Guide)

Start here: use your monitor’s native resolution, choose a High-quality preset, keep Textures at High or Epic when your graphics card has spare VRAM, set View Distance to High, Effects to Medium or High, Shadows to Medium or High, Global Illumination to Medium, and turn Motion Blur off. Cap the frame rate at a level your PC can hold consistently. If the GPU is still the bottleneck, reduce Global Illumination/Lumen first, then Virtual Shadows, general Shadows, Effects, and finally resolution scale or upscaling. This order usually removes the most expensive lighting work while preserving texture detail.

These are a practical starting profile rather than a developer-certified preset. Abiotic Factor runs on Unreal Engine 5, and the number of possible PC, resolution and graphics combinations makes one universal configuration impossible. Measure a repeatable, busy area and change one setting at a time.

Recommended starting settings

Apply the following profile before troubleshooting individual options. It targets stable image quality without spending the entire GPU budget on dynamic lighting and shadows.

Setting Starting value What to change first
Display resolution Your monitor’s native resolution Keep it native while tuning quality; use resolution scale or upscaling only after the quality settings are reasonable.
Textures High or Epic Drop this only when VRAM is close to full, textures stream late, or hitching appears while moving between areas.
View Distance High Lower it if distant geometry or scene complexity is the main cause of frame-time spikes.
Effects Medium or High Use Medium after lighting and shadows have been reduced.
Shadows Medium or High Lower this after Global Illumination and before reducing resolution.
Virtual Shadows High initially Reduce this early when the GPU is saturated; it can be considerably more expensive than textures.
Global Illumination Medium Use Low for the largest lighting-related performance gain, accepting flatter illumination.
Motion Blur Off Turn it on only if you prefer the effect; disabling it improves clarity during movement and costs no meaningful GPU budget.
Frame-rate limit A value your PC can sustain Choose consistency over the highest momentary counter reading.

Keep Reflections aligned with the same quality level as Global Illumination unless you have a specific reason to separate them. In Unreal Engine’s Lumen pipeline, the Global Illumination and Reflections quality groups control Lumen quality, so changing those groups affects the lighting model rather than merely a cosmetic post-process.

What the hardware requirement tells you

The Steam listing identifies a GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (or better) as recommended graphics hardware and states that the game runs on Unreal Engine 5. That is a baseline for the publisher’s recommended experience, not a promise of a particular frame rate at a particular resolution. A card in that class may need different settings at 1080p, 1440p or a higher-resolution display, and CPU, memory, drivers and the location in the facility also affect frame time.

Use the requirement as a planning signal: hardware at or above that class gives you more room for high-resolution output, Lumen and virtual shadows, while older or lower-tier cards should prioritize a consistent frame rate over Epic lighting. Do not infer a guaranteed 60 or 144 frames per second from the GPU name alone.

How to apply and test the profile

  1. Set the display mode and native resolution. Select the monitor’s native resolution in Abiotic Factor. Leave resolution scaling at its default or 100 percent while you establish a baseline.
  2. Choose a reasonable quality preset. Start with High rather than immediately selecting Epic. A preset gives every setting a coherent starting point; individual options can then be adjusted without accidentally leaving one expensive feature at an extreme value.
  3. Open the individual graphics options. Set Textures to High or Epic if VRAM is sufficient, View Distance to High, Effects to Medium or High, Shadows to Medium or High, Global Illumination to Medium, and Motion Blur to Off. Keep Virtual Shadows at High for the first measurement.
  4. Cap the frame rate. Pick a limit the system can hold in the busiest areas you visit. A stable cap generally feels better than an uncapped counter that repeatedly rises and falls.
  5. Choose a repeatable test location. Use the same busy room, corridor or exterior view each time, and repeat the same camera movement. A quiet hallway can hide a setting’s cost; a populated or effect-heavy area reveals it.
  6. Record a baseline. Unreal’s stat FPS displays the frame-rate counter, while stat unit exposes frame-time components that help show whether the GPU or another part of the frame is limiting performance. Enter either command through the game’s console if it is available in your configuration.
  7. Change one option only. Apply the change, repeat the same movement, and compare the result. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to know which trade-off produced the improvement.

Epic’s scalability guidance specifically warns that PC combinations are too numerous for one universal setting combination. Treat the profile as a controlled starting point, then use your own frame-time measurements to finish the job.

Which settings cost the most?

When your GPU frame time is high, start with lighting and shadow features rather than textures. A community Steam test illustrates the likely order of impact, although its values came from one setup and are not universal FPS guarantees:

Option and test value Reported result How to interpret it
Virtual Shadows — Epic 122 fps, −53% relative to that post’s baseline Virtual shadow quality can be a major GPU expense. Lower it before sacrificing texture resolution.
Lumen GI — Epic 129 fps, −50% relative to that post’s baseline Lumen’s indirect-lighting calculations can dominate frame time in some scenes.
Textures — Epic 250 fps, −3% relative to that post’s baseline Texture quality was comparatively inexpensive in that test when VRAM was available.

The figures are useful for ordering experiments, not for predicting your result. The test does not represent every GPU, driver, resolution, frame-rate cap or game location. If your stat unit output shows the GPU as the limiting component, lower Global Illumination and Virtual Shadows first. If the GPU is not the limiter, those changes may do little and you should investigate CPU-heavy scenes, background processes or a frame cap instead.

Global Illumination and Lumen: the biggest visual trade-off

Global Illumination controls how indirect light bounces through the environment. In Abiotic Factor, the setting is the in-game control most closely associated with Lumen’s quality. High settings preserve richer bounce light, contact shading and a more dimensional appearance, but they require more GPU work.

Epic’s Lumen performance guidance describes the Low quality path as using “only unshadowed skylight.” In practical terms, Low can make rooms and objects look flatter because the more detailed Lumen lighting contribution is removed. It is the right emergency setting when maintaining a playable frame rate matters more than lighting fidelity, not a free improvement with no visual consequence.

When to use Medium

Medium is the recommended balance point for the starting profile. It retains more of the intended lighting than Low while avoiding the full cost of Epic. If frame time is close to your target, leave it at Medium and adjust shadows or effects around it.

When to use Low

Use Low after testing Medium if the GPU remains saturated. Inspect the same dark rooms, bright corridors and transitions after applying the change. Expect less indirect-light detail and accept that the game may look flatter; this is the principal visual cost of the performance gain.

Why changing the setting can undo an advanced tweak

Unofficial configuration overrides can be re-enabled or superseded when you change Global Illumination in the game menu. If you use such overrides, finish the in-game quality tuning first, then apply the file edits and verify the result again.

Virtual Shadows and ordinary Shadows

Virtual Shadows were the most expensive option in the cited community test, with Epic reported at 122 fps and a 53 percent reduction relative to that post’s baseline. That does not mean every player will lose 53 percent, but it does justify testing this control before lowering textures or resolution.

Lower Virtual Shadows one step and repeat your test. If the frame rate is still below target, lower the general Shadows setting next. Watch for the visual effects: lower shadow quality can soften or remove fine shadow detail, especially around small objects and complex geometry. Keep the highest shadow level that fits your frame-time budget rather than dropping both shadow controls immediately.

Textures, VRAM and streaming

Texture quality primarily consumes video memory and storage bandwidth rather than performing the same expensive per-frame lighting work as Lumen. In the cited test, Textures at Epic measured 250 fps, only 3 percent below that test’s baseline. When your card has enough VRAM, High or Epic textures are therefore a sensible way to preserve surface detail while trimming shadows and lighting.

Lower textures when the VRAM meter is near capacity, texture streaming produces visible late loading, or movement between areas causes stutter. A texture setting that fits comfortably in memory is preferable to an arbitrary Low value; conversely, a high setting that constantly evicts assets can feel worse than Medium even if an average FPS counter looks acceptable.

Effects, View Distance and resolution scale

Effects

Effects cover transient visuals such as particles and other scene effects. After Global Illumination and shadows have been tested, reduce Effects from High to Medium if explosions, smoke, dense particles or other effect-heavy moments cause spikes. Check the same busy scene after the change because an empty room will not expose this cost.

View Distance

View Distance determines how much distant geometry and detail remains active. High is a reasonable starting value. Reduce it if distant scenes are the places where frame time rises, and inspect long corridors or open views for distracting pop-in before keeping the lower value.

Resolution scale and upscaling

Resolution scale or an upscaler is the broadest performance lever because it changes how many pixels the GPU must shade. Use it after choosing a sensible quality preset and after testing the expensive lighting and shadow controls. Reduce it in small steps, retest the same location, and stop when image softness becomes more noticeable than the frame-rate benefit.

Native resolution with a moderate quality profile is the clearest image. A lower internal resolution can deliver a much steadier frame rate, but it may soften fine text and geometry. If your display is high resolution and the GPU is consistently the limiter, this trade-off is often more effective than lowering every individual setting.

Frame-rate targets and frame pacing

Set a cap that the PC can maintain in demanding areas rather than choosing a number based on a brief peak. For example, a system that fluctuates widely around a high target may feel less consistent than one locked to a lower target it rarely misses. Re-test after entering a new facility area or enabling a heavier lighting option; a cap that was stable in an empty room may not hold in a busy scene.

A 144 Hz monitor can display more frequent updates, but the game still needs to render frames fast enough to use that refresh rate. The recommended hardware requirement does not establish a guaranteed 144-fps experience, so select the cap from your measured frame times.

Unofficial Engine.ini-style overrides

A community guide dated June 15, 2026 describes an advanced edit to AppData/Local/AbioticFactor/Saved/config/Windows/Settings.ini. It recommends adding these lines:

r.SkylightIntensityMultiplier=.15
r.Lumen.DiffuseIndirect.Allow=0
r.AmbientOcclusionMaxQuality=-100
r.AmbientOcclusionLevels=3

These are unofficial overrides, not supported in-game presets. They can alter brightness, ambient shading and the intended appearance, and a game patch can change or ignore them. Make a backup of Settings.ini before editing so you can restore the original file.

  1. Close the game completely.
  2. Copy AppData/Local/AbioticFactor/Saved/config/Windows/Settings.ini to a safe backup location.
  3. Open the original file with a plain-text editor and add the four lines.
  4. Save the file, launch the game and inspect the same test area used for your baseline.
  5. If you change Global Illumination in-game, check the file again and move the override lines back to the bottom if necessary. The June 15, 2026 guide warns that changing Global Illumination re-enables Lumen and requires moving those lines back.

Use this method only after ordinary settings have been measured. The overrides deliberately change the lighting model, so a higher counter may come with darker, flatter or otherwise unintended scenes. Remove the lines from the backup copy or restore the backup if lighting becomes inconsistent, a patch causes problems, or the game stops honoring normal menu changes.

A practical troubleshooting order

GPU frame time is high everywhere

  1. Lower Global Illumination from Medium to Low and check the lighting trade-off.
  2. Reduce Virtual Shadows, then general Shadows.
  3. Lower Effects if particle-heavy scenes remain slow.
  4. Reduce resolution scale or enable an available upscaler in small increments.
  5. Only then lower Textures if VRAM use or streaming indicates a memory problem.

Only busy scenes stutter

Repeat the test in the exact area that stutters. Lower Virtual Shadows, Effects and View Distance one at a time. Keep notes of which option changes the frame-time spike; an average FPS measured in a quiet corridor can hide a severe busy-scene hitch.

The image is sharp but movement is uneven

Use stat FPS and stat unit while reproducing the problem. Apply a frame cap below the unstable peak and retest. If the GPU is not the limiting component, lowering every visual setting may not help; investigate the specific frame-time category shown by the measurement instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Textures look blurry or assets pop in

Restore Textures to High or Epic if VRAM allows, and test again after reducing shadows or Lumen. Texture quality was inexpensive in the cited test, so it is usually the wrong first sacrifice unless memory capacity is the problem.

Lighting changed after editing the file

Restore the backup, confirm the in-game Global Illumination value, and retest without overrides. If you keep the edits, place the lines at the bottom again after any in-game GI change and verify brightness and ambient shading in several different rooms.

Suggested profiles by priority

Priority Settings approach Expected trade-off
Image quality Native resolution; High/Epic textures; High View Distance; High or Epic Effects and Shadows; Medium or High Global Illumination; Virtual Shadows High. Best lighting and detail, with the highest GPU demand.
Balanced Native resolution; High/Epic textures if VRAM allows; High View Distance; Medium/High Effects; Medium/High Shadows; Medium Global Illumination; Motion Blur Off; sustainable frame cap. Preserves surface detail while trimming the most expensive lighting work.
Performance Keep textures as high as memory permits; Global Illumination Low; Virtual Shadows and Shadows reduced; Effects Medium; lower resolution scale only as needed. Higher consistency at the cost of flatter lighting, softer image detail and simpler shadows.

Choose the profile that meets your measured target, then adjust only the option responsible for the remaining frame-time problem. There is no benefit in lowering inexpensive textures if Lumen or virtual shadows are still consuming the GPU budget.

Bottom line

For most PCs, begin with native resolution, High or Epic textures, High View Distance, Medium-to-High Effects and Shadows, Medium Global Illumination, Virtual Shadows at High, Motion Blur off and a sustainable frame cap. When performance falls short, lower Global Illumination first, then Virtual Shadows and Shadows, followed by Effects and resolution scale. Keep textures high while VRAM is available. Use stat FPS and stat unit in a repeatable busy area, and treat community benchmark percentages and file overrides as setup-specific guidance rather than guarantees.
