For the fastest 4K ray-tracing and path-tracing experience, choose NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is the more attainable high-end ray-tracing option, while AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT is the better fit when strong conventional rendering, 16GB-class memory and access to FSR 4 matter more than leading ray-tracing speed. Frame generation can make a game look smoother, but its displayed frame rate must always be considered alongside the real, rendered frame rate and the game’s support for the feature.

What ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation actually do
Ray tracing and path tracing
Traditional rasterization draws a scene through a sequence of triangle and shader operations. Ray tracing instead follows simulated rays from the camera (and, in many engines, from light sources) to calculate visibility, reflections, shadows and indirect lighting. Path tracing extends that approach by tracing many more light paths through a scene. The results can be more coherent and realistic, but the extra calculations sharply increase GPU workload.
Dedicated ray-tracing hardware accelerates portions of those calculations. The RTX 50-series combines that hardware with Tensor AI processors, while AMD’s RX 9000 series uses redesigned RDNA 4 ray-tracing accelerators. The practical result is not a universal performance guarantee: a card can lead in one game and trail in another depending on the engine, effects enabled, driver and resolution.

AI upscaling
Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output. That lowers the expensive part of rendering while preserving more detail than a simple stretch. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 and AMD’s FSR 4 use machine-learning techniques, but they are separate technologies and require game-specific integration. A title may offer one, both, or neither.
Upscaling quality depends on the internal render resolution, motion-vector data, anti-aliasing, camera movement and the implementation shipped by the developer. At an aggressive setting, fine geometry can shimmer or disappear even when the output resolution is high. At a moderate setting, the performance gain is smaller but image stability is generally easier to maintain.
Frame generation
Frame generation creates intermediate images between conventionally rendered frames. It can raise the number shown by an in-game counter and make camera motion appear smoother, but it does not replace the work needed to render the underlying frames. NVIDIA describes DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation as producing up to three additional AI-generated frames for each rendered frame. AMD documents FSR 4 as including frame generation, with availability limited to selected games that receive developer integration.

If the underlying game is running at a low frame rate, controls can still feel slow even when the displayed number is much higher. Treat frame generation as a smoothness feature layered on top of a reasonable base frame rate, not as a substitute for GPU performance.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090: the uncompromised 4K RT choice
Hardware and feature position
NVIDIA’s 2025 launch material identifies the GeForce RTX 5090 as the top GeForce RTX 50-series model. It lists 32GB of GDDR7 memory, 21,760 CUDA cores, 680 fifth-generation Tensor cores and 170 fourth-generation ray-tracing cores. Those specifications give the card unusually large capacity for high-resolution textures, heavy ray-traced effects and AI-assisted workloads.
The combination matters most when a game is limited by ray tracing or path tracing rather than ordinary rasterization. It also leaves more headroom for creator applications and other workloads that use Tensor processing. The specification alone does not establish a universal frames-per-second lead, so performance still depends on the game and settings.
Why it is the best ray-tracing recommendation
For a buyer whose priority is maximum 4K ray tracing, the RTX 5090 has the clearest role in this group: it is the flagship designed for the highest settings and the most demanding lighting modes. Path-traced games can be especially memory- and compute-intensive, making the 32GB memory pool useful when a title’s texture, geometry and lighting data exceed what smaller cards can comfortably hold.
Recommended Free Tools
DLSS 4 gives supported games an upscaling path and Multi Frame Generation can add up to three AI frames per rendered frame. The visual benefit depends on the game’s integration and on the base frame rate. A high displayed rate produced from a weak underlying rate should not be interpreted as equivalent latency to the same number of natively rendered frames.
Who should buy it
- Players building a flagship 4K system around ray tracing or path tracing.
- Users who want substantial memory headroom for demanding textures and AI workloads.
- Owners willing to verify case space, power delivery, cooling and current market pricing before purchase.
No single price, retailer stock status or power or thermal behavior applies to every specific board design. Check the exact card’s dimensions, connector requirements, warranty and current street price before ordering.
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti: the practical high-end RT tier
Ray-tracing performance
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 ray-tracing hierarchy places the RTX 5070 Ti ahead of AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT. In the same test suite, Tom’s Hardware reports that the 5070 Ti sits about 10–15% behind the RTX 5080 across its RT tests. That makes it a sensible high-end choice for buyers who want strong RT performance without moving to the flagship 5090 class.
The percentage is a test-suite result, not a promise for every game. Different engines can change the order, and a title with unusually heavy path tracing may expose larger differences than a game using lighter reflections or shadows.
DLSS and frame generation
As an RTX 50-series card, the 5070 Ti supports hardware ray tracing, Tensor AI processing and DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. Supported games can use AI upscaling to reduce the internal rendering workload and can insert generated frames for smoother motion. The same latency rule applies as on the 5090: judge responsiveness by the underlying rendered frame rate and input behavior, not the generated total alone.

Best use case
Choose the 5070 Ti when ray tracing is a priority, 4K is part of the plan, and the RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 tier is outside the budget. It is also a strong fit for a high-refresh 1440p monitor when you intend to enable demanding lighting effects and use DLSS where available.
A universal VRAM figure, power draw or street price is not established for this model. Compare the specifications and current price of the exact board you are considering rather than assuming every manufacturer’s version is identical.
Radeon RX 9070 XT: the AMD alternative for FSR 4 and raster performance
What it does well
AMD documents FSR 4 as machine-learning upscaling with frame generation and describes redesigned RDNA 4 ray-tracing accelerators in the RX 9000 family. The RX 9070 XT is the choice to consider when conventional raster rendering, 16GB-class memory and AMD’s feature stack matter more than being at the top of the RT hierarchy.
Tom’s Hardware reports that the RX 9070 XT beats AMD’s RX 7900 XTX in its ray-tracing tests. That is a meaningful generational improvement, but the same hierarchy still places the card behind the RTX 5070 Ti for RT performance. Buyers should therefore distinguish between “better than AMD’s previous high end” and “the fastest RT option overall.”
FSR 4 and game support
FSR versions are available only in selected games and require developer integration, according to AMD’s RX 9000 guide. FSR 4 is not a driver-level guarantee that appears in every game on your system. Before buying for a particular title, verify that the game supports the desired FSR mode and frame-generation implementation.
When a supported game spends most of its time in rasterization rather than ray tracing, the RX 9070 XT’s conventional-rendering strengths can be more important than its position in an RT chart. If your library is dominated by path-traced or heavily ray-traced games, the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5090 is the safer match for the stated priority.
Who should choose it
- Players who value raster performance and 16GB-class memory capacity.
- AMD system builders who specifically want FSR 4 in supported games.
- Buyers willing to accept lower RT performance than the RTX 5070 Ti in exchange for the AMD feature and memory balance.
AMD’s documentation and independent testing do not establish a single universal “value” winner because prices change by region and retailer. Check current listings and the game support you actually need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Feature | NVIDIA DLSS 4 | AMD FSR 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Upscaling method | AI-assisted upscaling using RTX Tensor processing | Machine-learning upscaling documented for the RX 9000 series |
| Frame generation | DLSS 4 includes Multi Frame Generation; NVIDIA describes up to three additional AI frames per rendered frame | FSR 4 includes frame generation in selected, developer-integrated games |
| Hardware context | RTX 50-series hardware ray tracing and Tensor processors | RDNA 4 ray-tracing accelerators and AMD’s FSR 4 feature stack |
| Availability | Game-by-game support and implementation quality determine whether it can be enabled | AMD states that FSR versions are available only in selected games and require developer integration |
Do not choose a card solely from the feature name. Make a list of the games you play, then check which technology each game supports, which quality presets are available and whether frame generation can be enabled alongside the ray-tracing mode you want.
Image quality is also implementation-dependent. A well-integrated upscaler at a balanced internal resolution can look better than a poorly tuned mode at the same output resolution. Screenshots or reviews from one game cannot prove that every other title will behave the same way.
How to compare these GPUs for your own games
1. Start with the rendering mode
Separate your workload into rasterization, ray tracing and path tracing. If you mostly play games with raster graphics, prioritize conventional performance, memory capacity, noise and the price of the exact board. If reflections, shadows or global illumination are central to your choices, use an RT-focused comparison such as Tom’s Hardware’s hierarchy, while remembering that it represents a particular test suite rather than every game.
2. Set a real frame-rate target
Choose the resolution and refresh rate you actually use. A 4K target places more pressure on memory bandwidth and rendering throughput than 1440p. Competitive players may prefer a stable, natively rendered rate and low latency, while single-player players may accept upscaling and frame generation for smoother camera motion.

Record the base, conventionally rendered frame rate first. Then record the displayed rate with frame generation enabled. A useful comparison states both numbers, for example “60 rendered, 100 displayed with generation,” rather than presenting 100 as if all 100 frames were produced by the game engine. Also note whether the game supports the feature natively and whether visual artifacts appear during fast motion.

4. Check memory and the rest of the system
- Confirm the card’s memory capacity against the texture packs and resolution you use.
- Measure the available case length, slot thickness and airflow path for the specific board.
- Verify the power supply and connector requirements listed by the card manufacturer.
- Leave thermal and acoustic headroom instead of selecting a card that only fits under ideal conditions.
The supplied specifications identify the RTX 5090’s 32GB GDDR7 capacity, but they do not provide a universal memory value for every comparison model. Use the exact product page for the board you intend to buy.

When it helps
Frame generation is most convincing when the underlying rendered rate is already high enough for responsive input and stable motion. In a supported single-player game, inserting intermediate frames can reduce the apparent judder of camera pans and make a high-refresh display look better utilized.
When it disappoints
At a low base rate, generated frames cannot eliminate the delay between an input and the next genuinely rendered frame. Rapid camera movement, thin geometry, particles and interface elements can also reveal reconstruction or interpolation errors. These are characteristics of the algorithm and implementation, not evidence that every game will show the same artifacts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to evaluate it
- Run the game with frame generation disabled and note the rendered frame rate and input feel.
- Enable the game’s supported upscaling mode at a sensible quality preset.
- Enable frame generation and record the new displayed rate separately from the base rate.
- Test a busy scene, rapid camera movement and any competitive gameplay before deciding whether the visual smoothness is worth the latency trade-off.
Power, thermals, noise and price
GPU performance is only one part of a practical build. A card that reaches your target frame rate but overwhelms the case airflow or power supply is not a successful purchase. Compare the exact manufacturer design for cooler size, connector arrangement, factory limits and warranty; those details can differ even when two cards use the same GPU.
Current street prices, retailer stock and promotional terms vary by country and date, so check live listings immediately before buying. A temporary discount can change the value calculation, but it does not change the RT hierarchy or the game-support requirements.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum 4K RT or path tracing | GeForce RTX 5090 | Flagship RTX 50-series position, 32GB GDDR7 and the most extensive listed RT and Tensor hardware |
| High-end RT with a more attainable target | GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | Leads the RX 9070 XT in Tom’s Hardware’s RT hierarchy and trails the RTX 5080 by about 10–15% in that suite |
| Raster performance, AMD ecosystem and FSR 4 | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 16GB-class memory, FSR 4 with frame generation and improved RT over the RX 7900 XTX, with an RT-performance caveat |
| Competitive responsiveness | Whichever card sustains the highest rendered frame rate in your games | Generated frames can improve smoothness but do not equal the latency of genuinely rendered frames |
NVIDIA describes Blackwell as “the most significant computer graphics innovation since we introduced programmable shading 25 years ago.” That is NVIDIA’s vendor statement, not an independent test result. Independent rankings and your own game list should carry more weight than marketing language when you make the final choice.
Common buying mistakes
Confusing displayed FPS with rendered FPS
Always publish or record both numbers when frame generation is active. The generated total is useful for judging apparent smoothness, but the base rate explains responsiveness and the amount of work the GPU is really doing.
Assuming one upscaler works everywhere
DLSS and FSR support is title-specific. A graphics card cannot add a missing developer integration to a game, and the quality of an implementation can vary substantially between releases.
Using an RT ranking as a raster ranking
Tom’s Hardware’s RT hierarchy answers a ray-tracing question. It does not establish that the same order applies to every rasterized game, resolution or driver.
Ignoring the exact board design
GPU model names do not reveal the dimensions, connector placement, cooler, noise profile or warranty of a particular manufacturer card. Check those details before purchase, especially for a flagship build.
Bottom line
The GeForce RTX 5090 is the clear recommendation for the highest-end 4K ray tracing and path tracing. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is the practical high-end RT choice and leads the Radeon RX 9070 XT in Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 RT hierarchy. The Radeon RX 9070 XT is the AMD alternative for buyers who put raster performance, 16GB-class memory and FSR 4 ahead of absolute RT leadership. Whichever card you select, verify support in your specific games, compare the rendered frame rate separately from generated frames, and check current price, stock, power and physical fit before ordering.
