Choose an RTX 50-series card if Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is essential. RTX 40 also supports DLSS Frame Generation, while RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 cards support DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. The right purchase therefore depends first on the DLSS feature you actually want, then on your resolution, games, budget and system compatibility.

This guide uses NVIDIA’s current compatibility information and 2026 feature announcements. It does not assign a universal “best value” winner: street prices, independent benchmarks, board dimensions and power requirements vary by country and model.

What to buy at a glance

Use this decision rule before comparing individual cards:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DLSS Super Resolution only: RTX 20, RTX 30, RTX 40 or RTX 50 can provide the feature, provided the game supports DLSS.
  • DLSS Frame Generation: choose RTX 40 or RTX 50. NVIDIA’s compatibility matrix does not list Frame Generation for RTX 20 or RTX 30.
  • DLSS Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation: choose RTX 50. Those modes are not listed for earlier generations.
  • New RTX 50 desktop card: compare the RTX 5050, 5060, 5060 Ti, 5070, 5070 Ti, 5080 and 5090 against your monitor resolution, game library and system limits rather than assuming the most expensive model is automatically the best choice.

NVIDIA’s DLSS Technology page is the authoritative place to recheck support because game and feature availability can change.

DLSS compatibility is a set of features, not a single label

“Supports DLSS” is too vague for a buying decision. NVIDIA lists several distinct technologies, and the supported hardware differs by generation. The matrix below reflects NVIDIA’s compatibility statement; it does not guarantee that every game exposes every option.

GPU generation Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA Frame Generation Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation

Super Resolution is the upscaling feature most people mean when they say “DLSS.” The game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an output image at a higher target resolution. Ray Reconstruction is aimed at reconstructing ray-traced lighting data, while DLAA applies the same style of neural anti-aliasing at the display resolution rather than upscaling. Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation can create more than one additional frame for each conventionally rendered frame, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation adjusts its behavior in supported software.

That distinction matters when upgrading. An RTX 30 card does not become incompatible with DLSS simply because it lacks Frame Generation; it retains the Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA entries in NVIDIA’s matrix. Moving to RTX 40 adds Frame Generation. Moving to RTX 50 adds the newer multi-frame modes as well.

Which generation fits your goal?

Choose RTX 20 or RTX 30 when upscaling is the requirement

If your goal is to render at a lower internal resolution and recover performance with DLSS Super Resolution, an existing RTX 20 or RTX 30 card remains relevant according to NVIDIA’s matrix. These generations also retain Ray Reconstruction and DLAA support. They are not listed for Frame Generation or either multi-frame mode, so buying one specifically for generated frames would conflict with the published compatibility list.

For an owner of one of these cards, first check whether your games offer DLSS and whether their current performance problem is primarily GPU rendering. If Super Resolution solves the problem, a generation change is not automatically necessary. Exact performance still depends on the game, resolution, quality preset and the particular card.

Choose RTX 40 when you want conventional Frame Generation

RTX 40 adds DLSS Frame Generation while keeping Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. It is the older generation to consider when your target games support Frame Generation and you do not require Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.

Do not describe an RTX 40 purchase as a way to obtain RTX 50’s multi-frame features. NVIDIA’s matrix lists those modes only for RTX 50. Check the game’s graphics menu and its current support notes before buying; the hardware capability alone cannot add a feature that the game does not implement.

Choose RTX 50 when multi-frame modes are a must-have

RTX 50 is the only generation in NVIDIA’s matrix with Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation all listed. This is the clearest answer for a reader who specifically wants the latest generated-frame modes rather than upscaling alone.

Within RTX 50, the feature family is shared across the listed desktop lineup, but that does not make the cards interchangeable for every workload. Higher tiers may be more suitable for demanding resolutions or ray-traced settings, while lower tiers may better fit a smaller budget or a lower-resolution display. The available evidence establishes compatibility and the model names, not a universal performance ranking.

The current RTX 50 desktop lineup

NVIDIA’s current lineup page lists seven desktop models. Use it to confirm the generation and then evaluate the exact board offered by a retailer or system builder.

Model DLSS generation support How to position it in a purchase decision
GeForce RTX 5050 RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Entry point to the RTX 50 feature family; assess target resolution, game settings and local price.
GeForce RTX 5060 RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Midrange option to compare when you want the new modes without moving to the higher tiers.
GeForce RTX 5060 Ti RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Higher 5060-class option; compare the complete board specification and current price.
GeForce RTX 5070 RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation A sensible starting candidate for a balanced new build, subject to current benchmarks and system fit.
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Step-up candidate when the 5070 does not meet your resolution or settings target.
GeForce RTX 5080 RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Higher-tier choice for users prioritizing demanding display resolutions and settings.
GeForce RTX 5090 RTX 50 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Top listed desktop tier; its cost and system requirements must be justified by your workload.

The model list and generation-level feature description come from NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards page. It does not by itself establish which model has the best value, the fastest result in a particular game, or the lowest power consumption.

How to choose an RTX 50 model without an unsupported “best” claim

  1. Set the display target. Write down the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate. A card intended for a high-resolution, high-refresh display faces a different workload from one driving a standard-resolution panel.
  2. Separate native rendering from generated frames. Decide whether you need higher rendered image quality, more conventional GPU frames, or the appearance of a higher displayed frame rate through Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
  3. List the games you actually play. Search each game’s current graphics settings and update notes for DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. A feature on the GPU is useful only when the game implements it.
  4. Choose the minimum generation that satisfies the feature requirement. For Super Resolution, RTX 20 through RTX 50 are listed. For Frame Generation, start at RTX 40. For either multi-frame mode, start at RTX 50.
  5. Compare models within that generation using current evidence. Look for independent benchmarks at your resolution and settings, then compare the exact board’s price, cooler, dimensions, power connectors, warranty and availability in your region. Those details are model- and market-specific.
  6. Verify the rest of the PC. Check case clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, motherboard space, monitor inputs and cooling before ordering. A GPU that fits the feature checklist can still be unsuitable for the physical system.
  7. Recheck software support after installation. Update the game and graphics driver, enable the desired DLSS options in the game, and confirm that the selected mode is active rather than assuming the driver enabled it globally.

What Multi Frame Generation changes

NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement says DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X Multi Frame Generation are available on GeForce RTX 50 GPUs. In 6X mode, NVIDIA says the system can generate five additional frames for each natively rendered frame. That wording is important: one conventionally rendered frame is followed by five AI-generated frames, not six newly rendered frames.

Rank #3

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

NVIDIA also reports that moving from 4X to 6X increases 4K frame rates in path-traced titles by up to 35%. This is a vendor-reported ceiling for that comparison and test context, not a promise for every game, resolution, graphics preset or computer. The exact wording and date are documented in NVIDIA’s announcement, DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation & Multi Frame Generation 6X Available Now.

Generated frames should therefore be treated as a feature-specific way to increase displayed smoothness, not as a replacement for choosing a GPU with enough conventional rendering capability. When evaluating a card, look at both the game’s ordinary rendered performance and the benefit of the supported DLSS mode. A headline multiplier can hide a low underlying rendered frame rate or apply only to a demanding path-traced test scene.

Game support determines whether the feature appears

DLSS support is implemented by game software. Two cards from the same generation can show different practical results if one game supports only Super Resolution while another exposes Frame Generation or a multi-frame option.

NVIDIA’s RTX 50 campaign currently names Resident Evil Requiem, Alan Wake 2 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered among games with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation available. The list is a useful starting point, not a permanent compatibility guarantee; check the game’s current patch notes and in-game menu. See GeForce RTX 50 Series: AI Gaming with DLSS 4.5 for NVIDIA’s current campaign information.

A practical pre-purchase check

  • Open the game’s official system or graphics documentation and search for the exact DLSS feature name.
  • Confirm whether support requires a particular game version, graphics API or driver.
  • Check whether the option is available at your chosen resolution and quality mode.
  • Look for user reports or independent tests at settings close to your own, while treating them as evidence for that game rather than a universal GPU ranking.
  • After installation, verify the setting in the game rather than relying on a generic “DLSS supported” label on a store page.

Buying a new card versus keeping an existing RTX card

Keep an RTX 20 or RTX 30 when Super Resolution solves your problem

If your current card delivers an acceptable rendered frame rate after enabling DLSS Super Resolution, upgrading solely for the word “DLSS” may not add a feature you need. NVIDIA still lists these generations for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. Investigate a new card when you need more conventional rendering performance, a higher display resolution, or a game feature unavailable on your generation—not merely because a newer product advertises DLSS.

Move from RTX 20 or RTX 30 to RTX 40 for Frame Generation

RTX 40 is the first generation in the matrix with Frame Generation. This is the relevant step when your target games support that mode and you do not need Multi Frame Generation. Compare actual game performance and total upgrade cost before deciding; the compatibility table alone cannot show whether the change is worthwhile for your particular card.

Move to RTX 50 for the multi-frame modes

If Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is a non-negotiable requirement, the matrix points to RTX 50. An RTX 40 card can provide Frame Generation but is not listed for the multi-frame modes. This is a feature decision, not a guarantee that every RTX 50 model will deliver a particular frame rate in every title.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by the DLSS name alone

“DLSS supported” can mean Super Resolution, not Frame Generation. Ask which exact mode the game and GPU support. The generation table prevents an RTX 30 purchase from being mistaken for a Frame Generation upgrade.

Treating generated frames as native rendered frames

Multi Frame Generation adds AI-generated display frames; it does not turn five generated frames into five independently rendered frames. Read vendor performance claims with the stated mode, resolution, title type and comparison baseline attached.

Assuming every RTX 50 model is identical in speed

The feature family is shared across NVIDIA’s listed RTX 50 desktop lineup, but model performance, cooling, dimensions and power characteristics are not established by the compatibility page. Check the exact board specification and independent tests for your resolution.

Ignoring game support

A compatible GPU cannot expose a mode that the game does not implement. Verify support for your own library, especially when a feature list changes with patches.

Using a promotional or historical figure as a permanent price

No single street price is reliable across regions or dates. Compare current local listings and include the cost of any required power-supply, case or cooling changes. Do not treat NVIDIA’s “up to 35%” figure as a price or a guaranteed performance uplift.

A simple decision tree

  • Do you only need DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or DLAA? An RTX 20, 30, 40 or 50 card is listed for those features. Consider keeping your current card if it meets your performance target.
  • Do you need DLSS Frame Generation? Limit the search to RTX 40 or RTX 50, then verify game support.
  • Do you specifically need Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation? Limit the search to RTX 50 and then select among the 5050, 5060, 5060 Ti, 5070, 5070 Ti, 5080 and 5090 using independent performance, current price and system-fit evidence.
  • Are you choosing between two RTX 50 cards? Prefer the one that reaches your target resolution and settings with conventional rendering, fits your case and power supply, and has a price and warranty you accept. Use multi-frame output as an additional feature, not the only selection criterion.

How to verify your setup after purchase

  1. Install the latest graphics driver recommended for the game and restart the PC.
  2. Update the game to the version that documents the DLSS feature.
  3. Open the game’s graphics or display menu and enable DLSS Super Resolution first; select a quality mode appropriate to your target resolution.
  4. If the game lists Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, enable the exact mode supported by your GPU generation.
  5. Load a repeatable scene and compare the game’s displayed frame-rate counter with the mode disabled and enabled. Record the resolution, preset and ray-tracing settings so the comparison is meaningful.
  6. If an option is missing, confirm the GPU generation, driver, game patch and graphics API, then consult the game developer’s support notes. Do not infer support from another title.

Final recommendation

For buyers who simply want DLSS upscaling, there is no need to restrict the search to RTX 50: NVIDIA lists Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA for RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50. For buyers who want Frame Generation, start at RTX 40. For buyers who specifically want Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, choose RTX 50 and compare the 5050 through 5090 according to resolution, games, budget and system fit.

The strongest evidence for a card is therefore feature compatibility plus results in the games you play—not a generic claim that one model is universally “best.” Recheck NVIDIA’s compatibility and game-support pages before purchase because software support, board availability and local pricing can change.
