Best Graphics and Performance Settings for Total War: Shogun 2 on Modern PCs (Original vs Complete Edition)

Start by identifying your build. The legacy Total War: Shogun 2 settings and the 2026 Complete Edition are separate targets. Feral Interactive’s ordered performance advice applies to the original build; it is not a measured Complete Edition preset. For the legacy game, keep your monitor’s native resolution if performance permits, then reduce settings in Feral’s order of expected impact, changing one option at a time. The Complete Edition has a new 64-bit foundation, 1440p and 4K interface scaling, borderless fullscreen, updated rendering and anti-aliasing, and refreshed visual assets, so its final tuning must be verified independently.

No consulted source supplies a controlled modern-PC benchmark, a guaranteed frame-rate target, or a single best preset. The settings below are therefore a documented starting method, not a promise of a particular FPS.

1. Confirm which Shogun 2 build you are tuning

Creative Assembly announced the Complete Edition on September 29, 2026 and explicitly said that its listed changes apply only to that edition. The original Shogun 2 build remains available in its existing form. This distinction matters because the detailed performance ordering published by Feral Interactive comes from the original game’s readme. It should not be presented as a benchmark of the Complete Edition.

Original (legacy) build

Use Feral’s list when the game exposes the familiar legacy graphics options. It ranks settings from the largest expected performance improvement to the smallest. The ranking is vendor guidance, not a test on current CPUs or GPUs.

  • Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
  • Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks

Complete Edition

The announcement describes a 64-bit upgrade; 1440p and 4K UI scaling; borderless fullscreen; improved rendering and anti-aliasing, including DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1; and updated textures, models, shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes. It also advertises more than 50 playable minor factions. Those are edition features, not performance measurements. A menu label, quality level or upscaling behavior in the Complete Edition may differ from the legacy list, so check the options actually shown by your installation.

“These changes, additions and fixes apply only to the Complete Edition, as we know it is vital that the original Shogun 2 build remains accessible as it currently exists.” — Creative Assembly, Complete Edition announcement, September 29, 2026

2. Open the correct graphics menu

Feral says the settings are available in either of two places:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the pre-game launcher and choose Options, then Display.
  2. Alternatively, launch the game and open Options → Graphics from the main menu.

The machine and the interaction between selected settings can restrict which controls are available. If an option listed below is missing, treat that as an edition or hardware limitation rather than forcing an unsupported configuration.

3. A safe tuning workflow for the legacy build

Feral identifies CPU speed, installed RAM, graphics hardware and the selected in-game settings as the most important factors in smooth play. It also advises closing other applications and keeping spare space on the main disk. Use that advice before judging a graphics change.

  1. Record your baseline. Note the current resolution and every graphics value before changing anything. Because no source establishes a modern FPS target, use the symptom you want to fix—severe slowdown, inconsistent motion, long pauses or distracting visual loss—as your reference.
  2. Close background applications. This follows Feral’s recommendation and removes an avoidable source of contention.
  3. Preserve native resolution initially. Lower it only if the current resolution is the limiting factor or you deliberately accept a softer image.
  4. Change one option at a time. Start at the top of the ordered list below. Apply the change, replay a comparable scene or battle, and decide whether the visual compromise is worthwhile before changing the next control.
  5. Keep a written “last good” setting. If a change causes artifacts, missing effects or no perceptible benefit, restore the previous value instead of changing several controls at once.
  6. Stop when play is acceptable. The goal is a stable, readable battlefield, not the lowest possible setting. Feral’s ordering tells you where to look first; it does not require every option to be reduced.

4. Feral’s legacy performance order

The table reproduces the relative order in Feral’s readme. “Faster” means the readme expects less rendering cost than the preceding choice; it does not specify a frame rate on a modern PC.

Order Setting Relative choices in Feral’s list What you trade away
1 Screen resolution 2560×1440 (slowest) → 1280×1024 → 1024×768 (fastest) Lower values reduce sharpness and usable desktop space; non-native scaling can look soft.
2 Vertical synchronisation On (slower) → Off (faster) Turning it off can permit visible tearing.
3 Particle effects Ultra → Medium → Low Smoke, dust, fire and other effects become less detailed.
4 Anti-aliasing MLAA (slower) → None Edges show more stair-stepping without anti-aliasing.
5 Texture filtering Anisotropic 16x → 4x → Trilinear Surfaces viewed at an angle lose some crispness as filtering is reduced.
6 Texture quality Ultra → Medium → Low Textures use less detail and may appear blurrier.
7 Depth of field Low (slower) → Off The cinematic focus-blur effect is removed.
8 Shader model Shader model 3 (high) → Shader model 3 (low) Lighting and material effects are simplified.
9 Unit and building detail Ultra → Medium → Low Soldier, structure and scene detail are reduced at distance.
10 Shadows Ultra → Medium → Off Shadow resolution and then shadows themselves disappear.
11 Unit size and maximum fleet size Ultra/Large → Medium → Small Fewer soldiers per unit or fewer ships shown at once changes battlefield scale.
12 Trees, grass, water and sky Ultra → Medium → Low or Off where offered Vegetation, surfaces and sky detail become simpler.
13 Terrain quality High → Low Ground contours and surface detail are reduced.
14 Additional effects Distortion/heat haze, HDR/light bloom, vignette, SSAO/ambient shadow and blood: On (slower) → Off Post-processing, contact shading and visual combat effects are removed. Blood requires the Blood Pack DLC.

Every row above is legacy guidance. Do not assume the same labels, ranges or cost relationship in the Complete Edition until you inspect that edition’s menu.

5. How to choose the trade-offs that matter most

Resolution and image sharpness

Resolution is first because it changes the number of pixels the game must draw. Feral’s examples place 2560×1440 at the slowest end, 1280×1024 in the middle and 1024×768 at the fastest end. On a modern display, begin at its native resolution when the game remains usable there. Reducing resolution is a deliberate performance trade: it can help when the current pixel load is the problem, but it also makes text and distant units less crisp. The listed 1024×768 minimum and 1280×1024 recommended minimum are old store requirements, not a recommendation to run a current monitor at those sizes.

Vertical synchronisation

Feral lists V-sync enabled as slower than disabled. Leave it enabled if eliminating tearing is more important than the performance cost. If motion feels constrained and tearing is acceptable, test it off before lowering several image-quality controls. The readme does not provide a modern display-refresh recommendation.

Particles, anti-aliasing and filtering

Particle effects are the third item in the vendor’s order, so reduce Ultra to Medium before sacrificing major scene detail if smoke, dust or fire are the source of a slowdown. MLAA costs more than no anti-aliasing in the legacy list; disabling it leaves jagged edges but preserves other detail. Texture filtering is a finer image-quality choice: 16x anisotropic filtering is listed as the slowest, 4x as faster and trilinear as fastest. Reducing it mainly affects the clarity of oblique surfaces such as roads and terrain.

  • A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials

Textures and post-processing

Texture quality follows filtering in Feral’s order. Medium is the intermediate choice when Ultra textures are too costly but Low makes the battlefield noticeably blurry. Depth of field can be turned off after trying its Low setting. The remaining post-processing switches—distortion or heat haze, HDR or light bloom, vignette and SSAO or ambient shadow—are individually listed as slower when enabled. Disable only the effects you do not value; doing so removes a visual layer rather than changing the geometry of the scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shaders, geometry, shadows and terrain

Shader model 3 high is listed as slower than shader model 3 low. Unit and building detail, shadows and terrain quality then provide progressively broader visual compromises. Medium shadows preserve some grounding beneath units while Off removes them entirely. Lowering unit or building detail can make distant formations and architecture less distinct, so it is often preferable to reduce a post-processing effect first if the image is otherwise readable.

Battle scale and world density

Unit size and maximum fleet size are grouped by Feral because larger values draw more entities. The list places Ultra or Large at the slowest end, Medium in the middle and Small at the fastest. Trees, grass, water and sky follow: use Medium when you want a less drastic change, and Low or Off where the control allows it. These settings alter the sense of scale and landscape richness, not merely sharpness.

6. Practical decision paths

If you want to preserve image quality

Keep native resolution, then work down the list from V-sync or particles only when a problem is visible. Try Medium rather than Low for particles, textures, detail, shadows and world density. Disable depth of field, vignette, bloom, heat haze or ambient shadow before giving up unit readability. This is a priority order, not a tested preset.

If you need the largest possible performance reduction

Follow Feral’s order literally: test resolution first, then V-sync, particles, anti-aliasing, filtering and textures. Continue through unit detail, shadows, unit or fleet size, world detail and terrain only as needed. Lowering several settings at once makes it impossible to know which change helped, so keep the one-at-a-time method even when the goal is maximum speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If battles slow down only when armies or fleets are large

Unit size and maximum fleet size are explicit entries in the performance list. Test Medium and then Small while leaving unrelated visual controls unchanged. If the slowdown remains, continue with unit and building detail, shadows and world-density settings in their documented order. The available evidence does not identify whether a particular modern system will be CPU- or GPU-limited in this situation.

7. What the Complete Edition changes about settings advice

The Complete Edition’s 64-bit upgrade and rendering changes mean that an old legacy preset cannot be called “best” for it without testing. Its support for 1440p and 4K interface scaling concerns readable menus and interface elements; it does not establish a guaranteed 1440p or 4K rendering frame rate. Borderless fullscreen may change how the game integrates with the desktop, but no source quantifies a performance difference versus other display modes.

The announcement also names DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1 among its anti-aliasing or rendering improvements. If those controls appear in your Complete Edition, evaluate them using the labels and quality modes provided there. Do not substitute the legacy MLAA-versus-None comparison for a modern upscaler comparison, and do not assume a feature listed in the announcement is present in the original build.

8. Legacy system requirements and what they do—and do not—tell you

Steam’s store listing gives the following requirements for the legacy game:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Minimum or recommended legacy specification How to interpret it in 2026
Processor Minimum: 2 GHz Intel dual-core, or 2.6 GHz single-core, or AMD equivalent with SSE2 A historical launch requirement, not a modern performance guarantee.
Memory 1 GB for Windows XP; 2 GB for Windows Vista or Windows 7 These operating-system-specific figures are obsolete as a guide to current smooth play.
Graphics 256 MB DirectX 9.0c card with shader model 3 It describes compatibility for the legacy release, not the capability needed for a current high-resolution display.
Recommended graphics AMD Radeon HD 5000/6000 series or an equivalent DirectX 11-compatible card Steam’s historical recommendation does not prove that a contemporary GPU upgrade is necessary.
Storage 32 GB disk space Leave additional free space as Feral advises; the listing does not define a modern reserve amount.
Display Minimum 1024×768; recommended minimum 1280×1024 These are legacy display baselines, not advice to lower a modern monitor to those resolutions.

Neither Steam’s requirements nor Feral’s readme supplies a controlled benchmark for current hardware. They cannot support a claim that a particular CPU, GPU, amount of RAM or upgrade will deliver a particular FPS.

  • The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
  • Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
  • New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
  • New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
  • Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.

9. Troubleshooting common results

An option is unavailable

Feral notes that hardware and interactions among selected settings can restrict availability. Confirm that you are editing the intended build, return to a supported combination, and use the controls the menu exposes rather than assuming every legacy option must be present.

The image is sharp but motion is still uneven

Close background applications, check available disk space and test the first entries in Feral’s order. Resolution, V-sync and particles are earlier in the list than most detail controls, so they are the documented places to begin.

Lowering settings makes the game look poor without solving the issue

Restore the last good value and change a different single option. The list is relative guidance, not proof that every control has the same effect on every modern configuration. Keep native resolution if it is not the limiting factor and target effects you personally do not notice.

You are playing on a Mac with two monitors

Feral’s readme specifically says that disconnecting a second monitor may improve performance on Mac. That observation is not evidence for Windows; do not generalize it across operating systems.

10. The evidence-based bottom line

For the original Shogun 2, the most defensible method is to retain native resolution when possible, use the legacy menu’s options, and test changes in Feral’s documented order—resolution, V-sync, particles, anti-aliasing, filtering, textures, depth of field, shaders, detail, shadows, scale, world density, terrain and post-processing. For the Complete Edition, treat its 2026 rendering and interface upgrades as a separate target and tune the controls it actually provides. The available official material establishes relative setting costs and historical requirements, but it does not establish a universal modern-PC preset or FPS number.
