For most PC players, start with Activision’s Recommended 90-FPS High target, run the built-in benchmark, use the upscaler designed for your GPU at Quality, and turn ray tracing off for competitive multiplayer. Then adjust only the setting that limits your frame time. Keep Enhanced FOV and sharpening at levels you can read comfortably, leave the world in focus by separating World and Weapon Depth of Field, and verify every change with the benchmark rather than trusting a preset name.
On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, choose the most stable performance mode exposed by your installed build and use VRR when both the console and display support it. Console modes, reconstruction quality and even menu labels can change with patches, so a nominal resolution is less useful than a steady frame rate and clear target visibility.

The best starting point for PC
Activision’s 2026 PC guidance is unusually specific: its Recommended tier targets 90 frames per second in multiplayer on High settings. That target is the most defensible starting point for a general-purpose configuration because it balances image quality and responsiveness without assuming a flagship graphics card. The official feature describes Modern Warfare 4 as “raising the bar for PC performance, targeting 90 FPS at Recommended Specs without compromising visual quality.” Treat 90 FPS as a target, not a guarantee; driver versions, patches, map complexity, resolution, upscaler mode and background activity all affect the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse this order when setting up:
- Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD and that Windows meets the security requirements.
- Select the upscaler that matches your GPU vendor and begin with its Quality mode.
- Run the in-game benchmark and record average FPS, CPU and GPU frame-time behavior, ping, input latency and each zone result.
- Change one setting at a time. If the GPU is the limiter, move from Quality to Balanced or lower the output resolution; if the CPU is the limiter, reduce CPU-heavy world detail before sacrificing image reconstruction.
- Run the benchmark again, then test an actual multiplayer match because a repeatable benchmark cannot represent every map, player count or network condition.
There is no single universal “best” preset. Activision publishes feature descriptions and hardware tiers, while the correct compromise depends on your display refresh rate, preferred field of view, tolerance for reconstruction artifacts and whether you value latency over cinematic effects.

Hardware, storage and security requirements
The following tiers are the official 2026 PC targets. They describe the class of hardware Activision uses for its requirements; they are not measured FPS results except where the 90-FPS High multiplayer target is explicitly stated.
| Tier | Processor | Memory | Graphics hardware | VRAM | Storage | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum playability | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | 8 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 470, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970/1060 or Intel Arc A580 | 3 GB | SSD with 115 GB available | Entry point for running the game; do not assume a high-refresh competitive experience. |
| Recommended competitive baseline | AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700 | 16 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Intel Arc B580 | 8 GB | SSD with 115 GB available | Activision’s High-setting multiplayer target of 90 FPS. |
| 4K upscaled, high-ray-tracing tier | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-10700K | 32 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 16 GB | SSD with 115 GB available | Designed for 4K upscaling with high ray tracing; it is substantially more demanding than the competitive baseline. |
PC play requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Activision’s support guidance, updated October 1, 2026, states: “TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” If the game refuses to launch, check your motherboard firmware and operating-system security settings before changing graphics options. Activision also warns that specifications can change with updates, so revisit the official requirements after a major patch.
Use the benchmark before changing a preset
Modern Warfare 4 includes a benchmark that reports average FPS, CPU and GPU results, ping, input latency and results for individual zones. Those readings let you distinguish a rendering problem from a processor, display or network problem.

- Open the game’s Graphics options and launch the built-in benchmark.
- Let the complete run finish; do not judge performance from the first few seconds.
- Write down average FPS, the reported CPU and GPU behavior, ping, input latency and any zone that falls markedly below the others.
- Apply one change, rerun the benchmark and compare the same zones.
- After you reach an acceptable result, play a representative multiplayer match. A benchmark does not reproduce every map, effect combination or server condition.
Use the benchmark’s bottleneck information rather than a generic internet preset. If GPU load is consistently the limiting factor, an upscaler mode or output-resolution change normally produces a larger gain than small interface or visibility adjustments. If CPU time is the limiter, lowering GPU resolution may do little; reduce expensive world detail and close background workloads instead. A high ping value is a network issue, not a graphics-setting issue, and cannot be fixed by changing anti-aliasing.
Choose the right reconstruction and anti-aliasing path
The PC build exposes AMD FSR Redstone, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X. Select the option that is available and appropriate for your GPU, then compare moving image stability, target readability and frame time in the benchmark. The fastest mode is not automatically the best competitive mode if it introduces shimmering, ghosting or unstable fine detail.
AMD FSR Redstone
Use FSR Redstone on a compatible AMD card when it is offered by the installed build. Start at Quality. Move to Balanced only when the benchmark misses your frame-time target and the resulting loss of detail is acceptable. Check foliage, thin geometry and distant target outlines while moving; those areas reveal reconstruction instability more readily than a static screenshot.
NVIDIA DLSS 4.5
On a compatible NVIDIA card, begin with DLSS 4.5 Quality and use the same before-and-after test. Balanced can recover GPU headroom for a high-refresh display, but inspect weapon edges, wires and distant silhouettes for temporal artifacts. Keep the setting that gives the clearest moving targets at your required frame rate, not the one with the highest menu estimate.

Intel XeSS 3
XeSS 3 is the corresponding choice for compatible Intel graphics. Quality is the sensible first pass; Balanced is a performance fallback. Compare the benchmark’s zone results and then a real match, because reconstruction behavior can differ between open sightlines and effects-heavy interiors.

Filmic SMAA T2X
Filmic SMAA T2X is the game’s named anti-aliasing option when you prefer its native image character or do not use one of the vendor upscalers. It may provide a different sharpness and motion profile from reconstructed output, so evaluate it at the same output resolution. Use the global sharpness control conservatively; excessive sharpening can turn normal edge contrast into distracting halos.
When to change resolution or mode
Keep Quality while the benchmark meets your frame-time goal. If the GPU remains saturated, try Balanced before making a large resolution cut. If Balanced still misses the target, lower output resolution or choose the available performance mode. Recheck image stability after every step. Upscaling is most useful when the display refresh rate is otherwise left unsustained; it is less useful if the CPU is already the bottleneck.
Visibility settings that matter in multiplayer
Modern Warfare 4 exposes more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices and interface, according to the official PC feature. The visibility controls below have the largest practical effect without requiring a particular hardware brand.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enhanced FOV
Enhanced FOV is available on PC. A wider field of view can reveal threats near the edge of the screen and make close-range movement easier to track, but it also makes distant targets appear smaller. Enable it only if the edge-lens effect is comfortable for you. Test the same sightline with and without it, because a theoretically wider view is not an advantage if distortion causes eye strain or makes target identification slower.
Global sharpness
Use the global sharpness slider to restore definition after upscaling, not to compensate for a fundamentally soft mode. Increase it gradually while watching moving foliage, weapon textures and distant character outlines. If bright edges develop a halo or fine detail flickers, back it down one step.
Shading quality
Shading quality affects how surfaces and lighting detail are represented. Keep it at the level your GPU can sustain after choosing the upscaler. If you need performance, lowering shading quality is a more controlled compromise than immediately adopting an aggressive reconstruction mode, but compare dark interiors and shaded players because visibility can change.
Filmic SMAA T2X and image stability
Compare Filmic SMAA T2X with your GPU-specific upscaler while moving the camera. The useful question is not which option looks sharper in a paused frame; it is which keeps thin geometry, signage and target edges stable during strafing. Keep a short benchmark note for each option so you can restore the better one after a patch.
Reflections, shadows and occlusion
Improved reflections, shadows and occlusion add visual information but consume GPU time. For competitive play, ray tracing should remain off unless your system has substantial headroom beyond the target. If you are GPU-limited, reduce these effects before lowering the output resolution when the benchmark shows that they are responsible for the drop. Recheck corners and doorways: shadow and occlusion changes can alter how easily a player separates from a background.

World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field
The game separates World Depth of Field from Weapon Depth of Field. Keep World Depth of Field low or disabled when you need the environment to remain readable, then decide independently whether weapon focus effects are worth retaining. Separating the controls prevents a cinematic weapon effect from blurring the entire world and gives you a visibility-first compromise.
Preset recipes by priority
These are starting recipes, not official universal presets. Confirm each one with the benchmark and your display’s refresh rate.
| Priority | Upscaling and resolution approach | Ray tracing | Visibility choices | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive multiplayer | GPU-matched upscaler at Quality; move to Balanced only if the target is missed | Off | Enhanced FOV only if comfortable; conservative sharpness; keep World Depth of Field low or off; choose the most stable anti-aliasing image | High-refresh play where latency, stable frame time and target clarity matter most |
| Balanced play | Quality reconstruction at the display’s native output; Balanced if the benchmark shows sustained GPU pressure | Off or limited according to available headroom | Moderate shading, reflections, shadows and occlusion; retain Weapon Depth of Field only if you prefer the effect | Players who want strong image quality without sacrificing responsiveness |
| Image quality and ray tracing | 4K upscaled path on hardware in Activision’s high-ray-tracing tier | Enabled only when frame-time results remain comfortable | Higher shading, reflections, shadows and occlusion; keep world focus readable | Single-player or slower-paced sessions where visual effects matter more than maximum refresh |
| Entry-level recovery | Use the available upscaler in Balanced or a performance mode; lower output resolution only after testing | Off | Reduce expensive shading, reflections, shadows and occlusion first; avoid excessive sharpening | Systems near the minimum tier that need consistent frame pacing |
Do not compare these recipes by average FPS alone. Record 1% lows or the worst zone result when the benchmark exposes them, input latency, image stability while moving, target visibility, VRAM use and whether the display refresh rate is actually sustained. A higher average with severe dips feels worse than a slightly lower but stable result.
Diagnose frame rate, latency and network symptoms
Average FPS is high but aiming feels delayed
Check the benchmark’s input-latency reading and your display mode. If GPU load is high, reduce reconstruction quality or expensive lighting effects. If GPU load is not the limiter, investigate CPU time and background processes. Ping is separate from input latency: a network spike can make shots appear late even when rendering is fast.
Average FPS looks acceptable but the game stutters
Look for a zone with a much worse result and compare CPU versus GPU behavior. A CPU-limited zone will not improve much from lowering output resolution. Keep the SSD requirement satisfied, close unnecessary applications and rerun the complete benchmark after each change. Sudden behavior after a patch may indicate an implementation change rather than a setting you missed.
The image shimmers after enabling an upscaler
Return to Quality, reduce sharpening and compare Filmic SMAA T2X at the same output resolution. Inspect motion rather than a still frame. If the artifact remains, use the reconstruction option that keeps thin geometry and distant silhouettes most stable, even if its average FPS is marginally lower.
VRAM usage is near the limit
Lower the settings that increase texture and surface detail in the installed build, then rerun the benchmark. Avoid combining the highest ray-tracing tier with a card below the stated VRAM class. If the game begins streaming assets or stuttering after a change, restore the previous setting before attempting further image-quality increases.

Activision does not publish a universal PS5, Xbox or Switch 2 settings table. Console menus and performance modes can change through patches, so use the labels visible in your installed build rather than assuming a mode has a fixed resolution or frame rate across updates.
Choose a stable performance mode
- Open the game’s Graphics or Display menu and identify the available performance and quality options.
- Choose the performance option when multiplayer responsiveness and consistent frame pacing are the priority.
- Choose a quality option only when its frame-rate behavior remains acceptable in a real match, not merely in a quiet menu or opening scene.
- Enable VRR on the console and display when both support it, then confirm that the display reports the expected variable-refresh behavior.
- After a major patch, repeat the test because reconstruction, resolution scaling and frame pacing can change without a new console.
For console comparisons, judge frame-rate stability, resolution reconstruction and VRR behavior where supported. Do not rank modes by a nominal 4K label alone: a stable lower-resolution reconstruction can be easier to play than a mode that repeatedly misses its frame-time target.
Updates, drivers and recovery checklist
Graphics behavior is volatile. Activision’s requirements and feature descriptions are dated 2026, and the company notes that specifications may change with updates. Driver releases, game patches and upscaler implementations can alter both image quality and frame time.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- After a major game update, rerun the benchmark and save the new average, zone, latency and ping readings.
- If a previously stable upscaler now shimmers or ghosts, compare it with the other available options and Filmic SMAA T2X at the same output resolution.
- If a patch causes launch errors, verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot before deleting settings or reinstalling.
- If a visual change hurts target visibility, restore the last known-good sharpness, Depth of Field and lighting values rather than changing every option at once.
- Keep a simple note of your display refresh rate, selected mode and benchmark result so you can identify regressions instead of relying on memory.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get 90 FPS in multiplayer?
Use hardware in Activision’s Recommended competitive tier, start on High with a GPU-matched upscaler at Quality, keep ray tracing off and benchmark each change. If the GPU is still limiting performance, switch to Balanced or lower output resolution; if the CPU is limiting performance, reduce CPU-heavy world detail instead.
Should I use DLSS, FSR, XeSS or Filmic SMAA T2X?
Use the vendor upscaler appropriate to your GPU and begin with Quality. Compare it with Filmic SMAA T2X while moving. Keep the option that meets your frame-time target with the least shimmering, ghosting and loss of target detail.
Does ray tracing help in competitive multiplayer?
It improves visual effects but costs GPU headroom. Leave it off for competitive play unless your benchmark shows substantial performance headroom beyond the target.
What is the best FOV setting?
There is no universal number in the published guidance. Enable Enhanced FOV only if its edge-lens effect is comfortable and you can still identify distant targets quickly.

Bottom line
On PC, the dependable path is Activision’s 90-FPS High target, a GPU-matched Quality upscaler, ray tracing off for competitive matches, restrained sharpening and separate World and Weapon Depth of Field. Use the benchmark to identify whether the GPU, CPU, latency or network is responsible for a problem, then change one control at a time. On consoles, select the installed build’s most stable performance mode, validate it in a real match and treat resolution labels as secondary to consistent frame time and readable targets.
