Best Graphics and Performance Settings for GTA 5 With Mods (Enhanced and Legacy)

The best modded GTA 5 settings are a controlled compromise, not a universal ultra preset. Confirm whether you own GTAV Enhanced or GTAV Legacy, check your graphics card’s VRAM, then tune in this order: Grass Quality, population density, shadows and MSAA, reflections, distance scaling, and only then advanced distance effects. Keep textures as high as VRAM allows, use DLSS or FSR on Enhanced when available, and judge changes by frame time and 1% lows in both city and rural scenes—not by the built-in benchmark alone.

For a dependable starting point, use High textures and shaders, High grass, about 75% population density, High shadows, Reflection MSAA disabled, MSAA off or 2x, and Advanced Graphics features disabled. Add visual-mod features one at a time. The settings below explain when to deviate, how to isolate stutter and crashes, and how to keep a modded single-player installation separate from official GTA Online.

Identify your GTA 5 edition before installing or tuning mods

Rockstar currently sells GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy together, but they are separate PC environments for graphics features and mod compatibility. A mod built for one edition may fail to load, crash at startup or produce missing textures in the other. Open the mod’s release notes and verify the supported executable, game build and required script runtime before changing graphics settings.

Enhanced versus Legacy

Area GTAV Enhanced GTAV Legacy
Lighting and reflections Ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections are available, subject to hardware and the selected settings. Uses the established non-ray-traced rendering path and the settings studied in older performance guides.
Upscaling Supports AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS; select a quality mode before resorting to a lower internal resolution. Does not provide the same Enhanced upscaler and ray-tracing feature set.
Mod support Compatibility is mod-specific and can change after game updates. Many long-established single-player mods target this edition, but each project still has its own version requirements.
Performance expectations Ray tracing, high-resolution assets and upscaling can shift the bottleneck between GPU compute, VRAM and CPU frame time. Relative setting costs from older testing are more applicable, although a large visual mod can still change the balance.

Do not copy a Legacy preset into Enhanced unchanged. In Enhanced, enable ray-traced effects one at a time and retest the same scene after each change. If a mod page does not clearly state edition support, treat it as unverified rather than assuming that a successful installation means it is safe.

Check hardware and leave frame-time headroom

Rockstar’s published minimum for the PC game (2025) is Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600-class processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 1 GB NVIDIA 9800 GT-class graphics card and 120 GB of storage. Those specifications are boot-and-play minimums, not a target for a graphics-heavy mod stack. High-resolution textures, new vegetation, traffic scripts and ray tracing can exhaust VRAM or CPU time long before the game reaches a nominal frame-rate limit.

  • VRAM: Watch the in-game memory meter while loading your heaviest texture and weather combination. A meter that reaches the limit is a warning for texture swapping and hitching; lower texture quality or remove the largest texture pack before sacrificing every other setting.
  • CPU headroom: Dense traffic, population scripts and advanced distance scaling can make the main thread the limit even when GPU usage is below 95 percent.
  • Frame-time target: Choose a stable target that your system can hold in the worst route you actually play. A locked 60 FPS with consistent 16.7 ms frame times feels better than peaks of 90 FPS followed by repeated 30 FPS drops.
  • Storage: Keep at least the game’s 120 GB requirement free, plus room for backups and mod archives. An SSD improves loading and reduces some asset-streaming delays, but it does not remove a GPU-limited frame-rate ceiling.

Install mods in a reversible, edition-specific workflow

  1. Record the edition and build. Note whether the launcher starts Enhanced or Legacy and write down the current game version. Keep this information with your mod list.
  2. Create a clean backup. Preserve an unmodified game installation or a verified backup before adding visual files. A backup is faster than reinstalling when an update invalidates a script or shader.
  3. Use a dedicated mods folder where the mod documentation supports it. OpenIV-based installations commonly copy modified archives into a mods folder so original files remain untouched. Follow the specific project’s directory layout instead of guessing.
  4. Install only required runtimes. Single-player projects may require ScriptHookV, an ASI loader or other named components. Match the runtime versions to the edition and game build; extra loaders add another possible failure point.
  5. Start with one visual change. Launch the game, load a repeatable save and record average FPS, 1% low FPS or frame time, VRAM use and any visual errors before adding another package.
  6. Keep a change log. Record each setting, mod and result. If a crash appears, revert the most recent change first instead of deleting files at random.
  7. Maintain a separate online-safe state. Before connecting to official GTA Online, disable or remove modified files as the mod documentation directs. Do not assume that a manager’s disabled toggle is sufficient without checking the resulting game files.

Lower settings in the order that usually saves the most performance

The order matters because some options consume shader work, foliage processing, draw calls or VRAM far more aggressively than their visual benefit suggests. Change one item at a time and test in the same location.

1. Grass Quality

Grass is the first setting to reduce when frame rate is poor. NVIDIA’s testing found that “Grass Quality has the largest impact on performance of any setting in the entire game.” High is the recommended starting point for most systems. Ultra is intended for the fastest hardware and can become particularly expensive in rural scenes, where foliage fills a large part of the view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mod that adds dense vegetation, test High before Ultra even on a powerful card. If rural frame time remains above your target, move to Normal; the gain is often larger than lowering a minor post-processing option.

2. Population Density

Population Density controls how many pedestrians and vehicles the game must simulate and draw. NVIDIA identified approximately 75% as a practical “sweet spot.” Raising it increases CPU work and can amplify the cost of reflections, shadows and night-time effects because more moving objects appear in those passes.

Use 40–60% when traffic scripts or city driving cause main-thread spikes. Increase it only after the heaviest route holds your frame-time target. Population Variety changes the mix of models and primarily affects memory use rather than raw frame rate, so raise it only while VRAM remains comfortable.

3. Shadows and shadow distance

Set Shadow Quality to High first and choose a softer shadow option before enabling high-resolution shadows. High Resolution Shadows, long shadows and very high shadow maps can consume substantial GPU time and VRAM. In NVIDIA’s test, disabling Long Shadows recovered about 3 FPS; the exact gain varies by scene and hardware, but the option is a sensible early cut when sunsets, headlights or dense city views are expensive.

Extended Shadow Distance has a relatively small cost in that testing compared with other advanced options. Leave it off while finding a stable baseline, then add it only if distant shadow detail is a priority and your 1% lows remain acceptable.

4. Reflections and MSAA

Keep Reflection Quality at High for a balanced image. When chasing FPS, disable Reflection MSAA before lowering the main texture quality. Reflection MSAA multiplies the cost of reflective surfaces such as wet roads, windows and vehicle paint, and the benefit is difficult to see during motion.

Use MSAA Off or 2x. FXAA is the inexpensive fallback for edge smoothing. High MSAA combined with ray-traced reflections can exceed VRAM or create a large GPU-time spike, especially at 1440p and 4K.

5. Distance scaling and advanced distance options

Distance Scaling controls how far detail and objects are drawn. Start at medium to high. Reduce it after grass, shadows and MSAA if city driving stutters, because reducing distance can lower both draw-call pressure and CPU streaming work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadow Distance off in the first pass. These are luxury settings: enable one, test a city route and a rural route, then keep it only if the visual improvement justifies the measured frame-time cost.

6. Textures and shaders

Set Texture Quality and Shader Quality to High or Very High when VRAM allows. Textures are often the last quality setting to lower because a lower texture resolution is visible everywhere, while a grass or shadow reduction can preserve most of the image. If the VRAM meter reaches capacity or hitching appears while turning the camera, lower texture quality or remove the largest texture replacement before reducing shader quality.

Use these starting presets, then tune for your own mod stack

The values below are starting points, not universal guarantees. Resolution, GPU VRAM, CPU speed, driver version, weather, script load and the exact mod combination can move the bottleneck.

Balanced 1080p

Setting Starting value Reason
DirectX Use the API stable for your edition and mods Test DirectX 12 if Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE remedy applies.
Texture Quality High or Very High Keep it high while the VRAM meter stays below capacity.
Shader Quality High or Very High Preserves material and lighting detail at a manageable cost.
Shadow Quality High Use softer shadows before high-resolution shadows.
Reflection Quality High Disable Reflection MSAA first if performance is short.
MSAA Off or 2x Use FXAA as the inexpensive fallback.
Grass Quality High Lower to Normal for heavy vegetation or rural dips.
Population Density About 75% Balances activity and CPU cost.
Population Variety Default or increased only with spare VRAM Mostly a memory decision.
Distance Scaling Medium to high Reduce after the higher-impact settings if city driving stutters.
Advanced Graphics Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadow Distance off Add separately after the baseline is stable.
VSync or frame limit Match the display’s refresh target after frametimes stabilize A cap cannot fix an unstable baseline.

High-end 1440p or Enhanced with ray tracing

  • Keep textures and shaders Very High while VRAM remains below capacity.
  • Use High or Very High shadows, then add ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows or reflections one at a time.
  • Keep Grass Quality at High or Very High unless the rural route exceeds your frame-time target.
  • In Enhanced, choose DLSS or FSR Quality mode before lowering internal resolution. Move to Balanced or Performance only when the GPU remains the bottleneck.
  • Keep MSAA moderate. Ray tracing plus high MSAA can consume VRAM quickly.
  • Retest the identical mod stack and identical city and rural routes after every major change.

Lower-end hardware or heavily modded installs

  • Set Grass Quality to Normal or High, depending on how much foliage the visual mod adds.
  • Use Normal or High shadows with a soft shadow mode.
  • Turn MSAA and Reflection MSAA off and use FXAA.
  • Set Population Density to 40–60% when traffic is the bottleneck.
  • Set Distance Scaling low or medium and leave Advanced Graphics options off.
  • Keep textures as high as VRAM permits; lower them only when the meter or stutter indicates memory pressure.
  • Cap the game to a stable target instead of chasing a fluctuating peak.

Choose an upscaler and graphics API deliberately

Enhanced’s DLSS and FSR options can reduce internal rendering cost while preserving more detail than simply dropping resolution. Start with a Quality preset and inspect thin geometry, foliage and vehicle edges in motion. Upscaling does not reduce CPU simulation cost, so it will not solve a population or traffic-script bottleneck.

Ray tracing is a separate performance decision. Enable ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections individually, recording frame time after each. At 4K with ray tracing, NVIDIA reported an average 3.9× frame-rate increase from DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50-series hardware in its 2025 test. That figure is a specific NVIDIA test result, not a guaranteed uplift for every card, game build or mod, and generated frames do not remove the underlying simulation workload.

Benchmark, then validate real gameplay

The built-in benchmark is useful for comparing one setting against another under repeatable conditions. NVIDIA cautions that it does not represent five-star police action or heavily forested areas, so a benchmark pass alone can hide the stutter that matters to you.

  1. Use the same resolution, weather, driver and mod list for every run.
  2. Run the built-in benchmark and record average FPS, 1% low FPS or frame-time behavior, VRAM use and any hitch.
  3. Drive a repeatable dense-city route with traffic and pedestrians.
  4. Drive a rural or forest route where grass and long-distance shadows dominate.
  5. Play the heaviest mission, weather preset or visual-mod scenario you actually use.
  6. Change one setting, repeat all three routes and keep the change only if the worst route improves without unacceptable visual loss.

Compare frame time, not just average FPS. A setting that raises the average by two frames but worsens 1% lows can feel less smooth. Note whether GPU utilization, VRAM, one CPU core or streaming activity is the limiting resource; that observation tells you which class of setting to change next.

Fix stutter, crashes and graphics errors methodically

When the game stutters

  • Check the VRAM meter while turning the camera and entering a new district. If it is full, lower texture quality or remove the largest texture replacement.
  • Lower Grass Quality, then Population Density, then Distance Scaling in that order when the problem appears in rural or traffic-heavy scenes.
  • Disable Reflection MSAA and main MSAA before sacrificing textures.
  • Use a frame cap your system can hold in the worst route. Consistent frame time is preferable to an uncapped saw-tooth pattern.
  • Test with the visual mod disabled. If stutter disappears, re-enable components one at a time to find the asset or script responsible.

When the game crashes after a mod or update

  1. Update the game and graphics driver to supported versions.
  2. Verify the game files through the launcher.
  3. Confirm that DirectX and Visual C++ components are installed and healthy.
  4. Check that ScriptHookV, the ASI loader and every script match the current edition and build.
  5. Temporarily remove the newest mod from the dedicated mods folder and launch a clean test.
  6. Restore the last known-good backup, then reintroduce files one at a time.

ERR_GFX_STATE

Rockstar lists switching the graphics API to DirectX 12, saving the setting and restarting as a possible remedy for ERR_GFX_STATE. Apply that change before random registry edits or wholesale driver cleanups. If the error returns, verify files, update the driver and test with the mod stack removed; a persistent error after a clean launch points away from a single visual setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep single-player mods separate from GTA Online

Single-player modding commonly uses OpenIV, a dedicated mods folder, ScriptHookV and an ASI loader. GTAPoliceMods warns that changed files can cause problems or bans on official online servers. Treat the online installation as clean: disable or remove modified archives, loaders and scripts before connecting to GTA Online, and follow the individual mod’s removal instructions. A mod manager’s inactive label is not proof that the game directory is restored.

Decide whether an upgrade will help

Observed limit Most useful next step What not to expect
VRAM meter at capacity, texture pop-in or camera-turn hitching Reduce texture resolution or move to a graphics card with more VRAM. A faster CPU alone will not prevent texture eviction.
GPU usage near 99% and low 1% frames in grass, reflections or ray tracing Lower Grass Quality, Reflection MSAA, MSAA or ray-traced effects, or choose a higher-quality upscaler mode. More system RAM will not directly remove a GPU shader bottleneck.
GPU usage low while traffic and population scenes slow down Reduce Population Density, distance scaling or script load; a stronger CPU may help. Lowering texture quality is unlikely to fix a main-thread limit.
Stable rendering but long load times Install the game and mod archive on an SSD and keep adequate free space. An SSD does not promise a fixed FPS increase in GPU-limited scenes.
Need ray tracing and Enhanced upscaling Use hardware with sufficient VRAM and support for the selected ray-tracing and upscaling features. No single card guarantees the same FPS across every mod, resolution and driver.

There is no single best preset for every GPU, CPU, resolution, driver, edition and mod combination. The reliable method is to establish a reversible baseline, reduce the settings with the largest measured cost, and validate the result in the exact city, rural and mod-heavy situations you play.
