Start with the default graphics configuration on Steam Deck. SteamDB lists Cozy Builder as Steam Deck Playable and SteamOS-compatible, and records that its default configuration performs well. On Windows, use the published hardware tiers as your baseline: 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1060-class graphics card for the recommended tier, or a GTX 960 4 GB-class card for minimum support. Because the game is built for very large creations and optimization is ongoing, treat every setting below as a starting point rather than a guaranteed frame-rate preset.
Cozy Builder launched on Steam on October 14, 2026. It is a Pangea Game Studios sandbox builder published by indie.io, centered on constructing and decorating a château, harvesting vineyards and crafting. Those thousands of possible placed objects make testing a large, furnished build more meaningful than testing an empty new game.

Quick starting settings
If you want a sensible first launch without chasing an unverified benchmark, use this sequence:
- Steam Deck: leave the game at its default graphics configuration. SteamDB’s compatibility record, tested September 10, 2026, specifically says that configuration performs well.
- Windows PC at or above the recommended tier: begin with the game’s default or high-quality profile, then test it in your busiest save. Do not assume that a menu preset guarantees a particular FPS.
- PC below the recommended GPU tier: reduce shadows and other expensive effects first. If frame pacing is still poor, lower the render resolution or enable a frame cap that your system can sustain.
- Large or heavily decorated builds: test after loading the save completely and walking through the densest area. A quiet meadow can hide the CPU and rendering load created by thousands of objects.
The order for reducing settings is editorial guidance based on the published requirements, Steam Deck compatibility result and the developer’s statements about ongoing optimization. It is not an official preset or an FPS promise.

Official PC requirements and what they mean
The developer’s Steam listing gives two Windows tiers. Both require 4 GB of available storage and 16 GB of system memory; the principal difference is the CPU and graphics-card class.
| Tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 or later | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 960 4 GB or similar | 4 GB available |
| Recommended | Windows 10 or later | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 4500 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 1060 or similar | 4 GB available |
GPU class is the clearest graphics checkpoint
The GTX 960 4 GB-class minimum is a compatibility floor, not a claim that every scene will run smoothly at a chosen resolution. The GTX 1060-class recommended tier is the more useful target when buying or upgrading a system. A newer card can be faster even when its model number is different, but compare real performance and available video memory rather than assuming that any newer product automatically matches the requirement.
CPU capacity matters as builds grow
The recommended processor moves from the i5-6600/Ryzen 5 3500 class to the i5-8400/Ryzen 5 4500 class. That increase is relevant to a builder game: object placement, world updates and draw-call submission can become more demanding as a settlement fills with structures and decorations. The developer describes optimization as an ongoing process because the game is intended to let players place thousands of items. A graphics upgrade alone may not remove slowdowns caused by a busy CPU-bound scene.

Best Steam Deck approach
1. Use the default profile first
SteamDB’s compatibility record marks the game Steam Deck Playable and SteamOS-compatible. Its wording is specific: “This game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck.” Start there instead of importing a community profile whose settings may have been made for an older build. The compatibility test is dated September 10, 2026, so a later game update can change results.
2. Test a representative save
Launch a new game only to confirm that the controls and display work. For performance tuning, load the save with the most buildings, furniture, vegetation and production activity. Walk through the château, vineyard and any area with many simultaneously visible objects. Record whether the problem is a low average frame rate, brief stutter while turning the camera, or a slowdown that appears only in the largest construction zones.
3. Change one class of setting at a time
If the default profile is not comfortable, open the game’s graphics menu and make a single change, then repeat the same route through your busy area. Lower shadows first, followed by other costly lighting or effects options if the game exposes them. These settings often reduce GPU work while preserving texture detail, but Cozy Builder has no published setting-by-setting benchmark proving the size of each gain.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Adjust resolution only after effects
When effects reductions are insufficient, lower the game’s render resolution or choose a less demanding resolution scale, if available. Resolution changes affect image sharpness across the entire scene, so they are usually more visible than a shadow reduction. Keep the display output at the Deck’s native mode when possible and reduce the internal render scale only as far as needed for consistent frame times.

5. Use a frame cap based on observed stability
A cap can make uneven frame delivery feel steadier, but no official target FPS has been published. Watch the performance overlay while repeating the same route and choose a cap that the Deck holds in the busiest section, rather than one it reaches only in an empty field. A lower, stable cap is preferable to a high cap with frequent drops. Recheck after updates because optimization work and new graphics options can alter the result.
6. Keep the profile per game
SteamOS allows per-game performance settings through the Quick Access menu (the … button) and its Performance section. Apply changes to Cozy Builder rather than globally, so other games retain their own refresh-rate, frame-limit and power settings. If a profile causes unusual behavior, return to the default values and retest before changing several controls at once.
Windows PC settings by hardware tier
At or above the recommended tier
With an i5-8400/Ryzen 5 4500-class processor, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060-class or faster GPU, begin with the default profile. Increase quality only after confirming that a fully developed save remains responsive. Prioritize image quality settings that matter to you, but keep an eye on frame-time consistency when rotating the camera near dense structures. The recommended specification does not identify a tested resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset or FPS.
Between minimum and recommended
A system that meets the minimum tier but falls short of the recommended GPU or CPU should favor consistency over visual effects. Lower shadows and expensive lighting effects first. If the GPU is still saturated, reduce resolution or render scale. If the frame rate falls mainly when many objects are visible and GPU utilization is not high, the processor may be the limiting part; in that case, reducing a resolution setting will have little effect, and a frame cap can provide a steadier presentation.

At the minimum tier
Use the lowest available shadow and effects options, then select a conservative resolution. Keep textures at a level that does not exhaust the card’s video memory; if the game offers texture streaming or texture-quality choices, lower them only when you see hitching associated with memory use. Close unnecessary background applications and overlays before testing. The GTX 960 4 GB and i5-6600/Ryzen 5 3500 figures define the official minimum, but they do not guarantee a particular experience in a thousands-of-items settlement.
Systems below minimum
Software changes cannot turn an unsupported machine into a tested configuration. You can still try the lowest settings and a lower resolution, but treat crashes, severe stutter or failure to load as a hardware-compatibility issue rather than evidence that one hidden option is wrong. Check that Windows is supported and that the game is installed on a drive with the required free space before troubleshooting graphics further.
A repeatable tuning procedure
Use the same scene and the same order of changes so that each adjustment tells you something useful.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Update first: install the current game build, Steam client updates and GPU driver available for your system. Official updates have mentioned performance optimizations and additional graphics options, so menu names and behavior can change.
- Choose a test route: load your densest save and follow a repeatable path that includes the château exterior, interior decorations and vineyard activity.
- Observe the symptom: note average smoothness, camera-turn stutter, pauses while new areas appear and any visual corruption. Do not judge only from the first few seconds after loading.
- Reduce shadows: lower shadow quality or distance one step, if exposed, and repeat the route.
- Reduce effects: lower volumetric, lighting, ambient-occlusion or post-processing options when the menu provides them. Change one group at a time so you can identify the useful setting.
- Lower resolution or render scale: use the smallest reduction that removes the worst dips. If the image becomes too soft, restore some resolution and accept a lower frame cap instead.
- Adjust textures only for memory problems: texture quality usually affects VRAM use and image detail more than object-processing load. Lower it when you see hitching or warnings associated with memory, not as the first response to a CPU-limited scene.
- Set a sustainable cap: select a limit that the system maintains along the entire route. Recheck after adding a substantial number of objects.
- Save the profile: keep a note of the working settings. If an update changes performance, you can compare the new behavior with a known baseline.
Diagnosing GPU, CPU and memory limits
Signs of a GPU-limited scene
- Lowering resolution produces a clear improvement.
- Shadows, lighting or post-processing changes have a noticeable effect.
- GPU utilization remains high while the CPU has spare capacity.
For this pattern, keep the CPU-heavy simulation intact and reduce resolution, shadows or effects in that order.

Signs of a CPU- or object-limited scene
- Performance worsens as you add buildings and decorations even when resolution is already low.
- Lowering resolution changes little, while camera movement through dense areas causes the largest drops.
- One or more CPU cores remain busy while the GPU is not fully utilized.
Use a sensible frame cap and, if the game exposes them, test view-distance or object-detail controls. Do not assume those options exist; the published material does not provide a complete settings list.
Signs of memory pressure
- Stutter appears when entering a new area or loading a heavily decorated save.
- Texture-quality changes affect the problem more than shadow changes.
- System memory or video-memory usage approaches the available limit.
Close background programs, confirm that the system has 16 GB RAM, and lower texture quality if necessary. Keep enough free storage for updates and shader caches.
When an upgrade is more useful than another setting change
For a Windows upgrade decision, the most defensible target from the published specifications is a GTX 1060-class graphics card paired with 16 GB of RAM. If your current card is below the GTX 960 4 GB minimum, replacement is the first priority. If it meets the minimum but cannot sustain your chosen resolution, a faster GPU is the logical upgrade. If low-resolution testing barely changes performance in large builds, prioritize a processor in the i5-8400/Ryzen 5 4500 class or better instead.
Do not buy hardware on the assumption that a particular model will deliver a guaranteed 60 FPS or a specific resolution. No searched source publishes an official FPS guarantee, frame-time data or a complete tested matrix covering resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing, textures and frame limits. Match the upgrade to the bottleneck you observe, and retain 16 GB RAM as the baseline.
What the published evidence does and does not establish
The Steam requirements establish supported Windows hardware tiers, not performance targets. SteamDB establishes a positive default-configuration result for Steam Deck and SteamOS, with a compatibility test timestamp of September 10, 2026. The developer has also said: “Performance optimization is a process that we need to keep an eye on perpetually. We want you to be able to build with a lot of freedom and potential to place thousands of items.” That statement explains why a save with an enormous château may behave differently from a new game and why settings advice should remain flexible.
Official updates have mentioned additional graphics options and performance optimizations. After each update, review the available menu controls and repeat your busy-save test instead of assuming that an old profile remains optimal. Until a source publishes reproducible benchmarks, the reliable method is to start from the Deck default or PC hardware tier, change the most expensive settings first, and judge stability in the build you actually play.
