Start with the High preset, keep your monitor’s native resolution, select the upscaler that matches your GPU in Quality mode, and cap the game at a frame rate it can hold in busy farms and towns. For most systems, that means High foliage and effects, Medium shadows, High view distance, Ultra textures, DirectX 12, and a 60 FPS cap. Change only the setting connected to the bottleneck you can actually observe: shadows and lighting for a GPU limit, foliage and view distance for dense outdoor scenes, or simulation and crowd controls for a CPU limit.

A dependable starting profile

Because farming RPGs use different engines, patches and menu labels, there is no universal slider value that produces the same frame rate on every title. The profile below is a practical starting point based on an official optimized configuration published by Dovetail Games in September 2026. Dovetail reported about an 11% performance increase over Ultra in GPU-bound scenes; that figure is a scene- and hardware-dependent result, not a guarantee for every game.

Setting Starting value Why it is here
Overall preset High Retains most visual detail without Ultra’s disproportionately high GPU cost.
Foliage quality High Keeps crop rows, grass and trees detailed while leaving room for dense scenes.
Shadows Medium Removes one of the most expensive lighting workloads with a relatively modest visual change.
Effects High Preserves weather, particles and tool effects for normal play.
Sky quality High Maintains cloud and sky detail without using the maximum setting.
Fog quality Ultra Retains atmospheric depth; lower it only if fog-heavy scenes are the measured problem.
Post-processing High Keeps the intended image treatment while avoiding an Ultra pass.
View distance High Protects horizon visibility, distant buildings and field layouts.
Textures Ultra Uses available VRAM for surface detail; texture quality is usually a weaker raw-FPS lever than shadows or lighting.
Upscaling Quality Reduces internal rendering work while keeping the monitor at its native output resolution.
Graphics API DirectX 12 Use the API recommended by the game’s current support guidance; changing APIs can alter shader compilation and stutter behavior.
Frame-rate cap 60 FPS Provides a realistic target for recommended-tier hardware and steadier frame pacing than an uncapped peak.

Apply the profile, load a representative save, and spend several minutes in the places that normally expose problems: a full farm with mature crops, a tree-lined route, a busy town, and a weather event. Do not judge the result from an empty field or a static menu.

Choose a frame-rate target before changing quality

A stable target is more useful than a high number that collapses whenever the simulation becomes busy. Dovetail’s guidance uses 30 FPS for minimum-tier hardware and 60 FPS for recommended-tier hardware. If your display runs at 120 Hz, sensible caps include 30, 60, 90 or 120 FPS; select the highest option the game can sustain in its heaviest scenes.

Target When it makes sense What to watch
30 FPS Entry-level or older hardware, or a visually demanding resolution. Frame-time consistency matters more than chasing 40–50 FPS spikes.
60 FPS Recommended-tier systems and most standard 60–75 Hz displays. Check that farm and town scenes do not produce repeated dips.
90 FPS Systems with substantial headroom and a high-refresh display. Confirm that the GPU is not running constantly at maximum heat and noise.
120 FPS Only when the title and hardware can hold it outside light scenes. A lower, steady cap can look and feel better than an unstable maximum.

Set the cap in the game first. If the game lacks a reliable limiter, use the driver or display software. When possible, choose a cap divisible by the monitor’s refresh rate and set it slightly below the usual average. This leaves a small timing margin, reduces heat, and avoids large frame-time swings. As Obsidian Entertainment Support explains, a frame cap prevents the GPU from overworking and stabilizes frame pacing.

Keep native output resolution and select the right upscaler

Leave the output resolution at the monitor’s native value whenever performance allows. An upscaler renders the scene at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it for the native output, reducing GPU work without forcing the desktop or display signal to a non-native mode.

GPU family First upscaler to try Adjustment path
Supported NVIDIA RTX hardware DLSS Start at Quality; move to Balanced only if the target is not sustained.
AMD hardware or broadly compatible GPUs FSR Start at Quality, then test Balanced or Performance as a last resort.
Intel Arc hardware XeSS Use Quality first and compare fine foliage and distant geometry for shimmer.

The labels and available modes vary by game. Quality usually gives the clearest reconstruction, while Balanced and Performance lower the internal pixel count further. The trade-off is visible as softness, shimmering leaves, broken fence lines, or temporal breakup around moving objects. Lower the mode only after you have identified that the GPU, rather than the CPU, is limiting the frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to judge an upscaler fairly

  • Stand in a crop field and inspect thin stems, fences and power lines while moving the camera.
  • Look toward a distant tree line or town roof for shimmer and crawling edges.
  • Check text and inventory icons for softness; UI is often rendered at a separate resolution.
  • Compare the same save and camera angle at each mode instead of relying on a different scene.

If Quality mode already meets the cap, it is generally preferable to lowering several visual settings. If even Performance mode cannot provide the target, reduce the most expensive settings next or choose a lower target frame rate.

Lower settings in this order when the GPU is the limit

Use an on-screen performance overlay or the game’s statistics view to confirm a GPU limit before changing image quality. A GPU that is near full utilization while the CPU has spare capacity points toward the following sequence.

1. Shadows

Shadow maps and cascades are expensive because they render scene geometry from one or more additional light viewpoints. Lowering shadows one step is usually the best first compromise: contact shadows become less precise and distant edges may soften, but crops, buildings and characters remain intact. If the game separates shadow distance, reduce distance before removing nearby contact detail.

2. Reflections and global illumination

Screen-space reflections, ray-traced reflections and high-quality global illumination can consume substantial GPU time in wet fields, glass surfaces and interiors. Reduce reflection quality or disable ray tracing before cutting textures. If a title offers separate indirect-lighting controls, use the lower option while keeping direct-light quality acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Foliage density and view distance

Dense fields and tree-heavy maps combine geometry, animation and shadows. Lower foliage quality or density when the slowdown appears in crops, grass or forests. Lower view distance when distant objects stream in late or the horizon is the source of the drop. Keep view distance higher if navigation, landmarks and long sight lines are central to your play style.

4. Effects and sky quality

Rain, snow, dust, smoke and large particle systems can create short GPU spikes. Reduce effects when weather or machinery causes the dips. Sky and cloud quality can also matter during storms; use a lower level only if the issue is tied to those scenes.

5. Textures

Textures primarily consume VRAM and storage bandwidth rather than shader time. Keep them High or Ultra when the card has enough VRAM. Lower them when you see texture pop-in, hitching during movement, missing surfaces or memory warnings. A texture reduction rarely fixes a pure shadow or lighting bottleneck.

Exact FPS gains for each slider are not established across farming RPGs. The result depends on resolution, engine, patch, scene complexity and hardware, so change one setting at a time and record the frame-time result.

Frame generation: smoother presentation, not a faster simulation

Frame generation inserts synthetic frames between frames rendered natively by the GPU. It can make camera movement appear smoother, but it does not make the underlying simulation, input sampling or game logic run at the generated rate.

Sceptre 24-Inch Gaming Monitor, 99% sRGB, 1ms, Up to 180Hz, FreeSync, Eye Care, FPS/RTS, DisplayPort, HDMI, Built-in Speakers, Machine Black (E248B-FPT168 Series)
  • up to 180Hz Refresh Rate: Pushing beyond the standard 144Hz, 165Hz gives gamers an edge in visibility as frames transition instantly, leaving behind no blurred images.
  • IPS Panel: The IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel cannot be beat when it comes to consistently delivering top color performance and sharp visibility from multiple viewing angles.
  • AMD FreeSync: With FreeSync, gamers now enjoy smooth video and seamless on the spot movement through their fast paced games. FreeSync is an AMD technology that nearly eliminates tearing and stuttering due to differences between a graphics card's frame rate and a monitor's refresh rate.
  • Edgeless Design: Edgeless Design completely immerses you in all the captivating action and wondrous scenery that 1080P resolution and 165Hz refresh rate have to offer.
  • Multiple Digital Ports: While three HDMI ports each deliver an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, one DisplayPort produces a stunning 165Hz refresh rate, all in FHD resolution.

Enable it only when the base frame rate is already roughly above 45 FPS and the game offers a latency-reduction option. A weak base rate gives the generator less reliable motion data, increasing ghosting and edge artifacts. Artifacts are generally less noticeable as the native frame rate rises. Added latency is also more apparent in tool aiming, driving or other input-sensitive activities.

  • Measure the native rate with frame generation disabled.
  • Raise the base rate to a healthy level using shadows, reflections or upscaling before enabling generation.
  • Turn on the game’s latency-reduction feature when available.
  • Inspect fences, crop rows, character hands and fast camera pans for ghosting or doubled geometry.
  • Keep frame generation off if latency or artifacts are more distracting than the extra smoothness.

Synchronize the game with the display

Use V-Sync when visible tearing is the problem. If the monitor supports adaptive synchronization, G-Sync or FreeSync can keep output tear-free across a variable range while usually adding less latency than traditional V-Sync. Set the in-game cap near, but not above, the display’s refresh rate; a slightly lower cap helps the adaptive range remain available.

Do not combine several independent limiters without checking their behavior. Start with one in-game cap, then test adaptive sync. If frame pacing still feels uneven, compare the game limiter with a driver-level limiter and keep the option that produces the steadier frame-time graph.

Tell a GPU bottleneck from a CPU bottleneck

Lowering graphics quality helps only when the GPU is doing the waiting. Open-world farms can instead become CPU-limited by simulation, animals, vehicles, NPC schedules, streaming and draw-call submission.

Observation Likely limit Useful response
GPU utilization stays near its limit and lowering resolution raises FPS. GPU Use the shadow, reflection, foliage and upscaling order.
One or more CPU cores are saturated while GPU utilization falls. CPU or simulation Lower crowd, traffic, animal or simulation-density controls if the game provides them; graphics reductions may do little.
Short pauses occur during travel and coincide with asset loading. Streaming or storage Move the installation to the fastest SSD and leave free space for operating-system and game activity.
Stutter remains after a stable cap and low utilization. Driver, overlay or background process Follow the cleanup steps below before changing image quality further.

Use 1% lows or a frame-time graph, not only the average FPS number. A profile that averages 60 FPS but repeatedly falls into distracting stalls is less comfortable than one that holds a lower, consistent rate.

Recommended profiles by situation

Profile Target resolution and cap GPU versus CPU expectation Image and artifact trade-off Foliage and shadow distance VRAM implication Display, heat and noise
High-quality baseline Native output; cap at the rate the system sustains, commonly 60 FPS. Best when the GPU has moderate headroom and the CPU handles simulation. Quality upscaling preserves clarity; no generated-frame latency. High foliage and view distance with reduced shadow cost. High or Ultra textures require adequate VRAM. Lower heat and fan swings than an uncapped Ultra profile.
GPU-relief profile Native output with Quality or Balanced upscaling and a conservative cap. For GPU-bound weather, towns or dense fields. Balanced may soften fine foliage and introduce shimmer. Reduce reflections and shadow quality before cutting horizon distance. Upscaling does not reduce texture memory; lower textures only for VRAM pressure. Usually lowers power draw and noise if the cap is respected.
CPU-relief profile Keep the native output and graphics quality where possible. For simulation, crowd or streaming limits. Upscaling may provide little benefit when the CPU is waiting. Keep visual distance unless streaming itself is the issue; reduce simulation-density controls. VRAM is not the primary constraint. A lower cap can smooth frame-time spikes and reduce heat.
Frame-generation profile Native output; native frame rate above roughly 45 FPS before generation. Only after a healthy base rate is established. Smoother motion with possible latency and interpolation artifacts. Keep detail settings that support clean motion vectors; inspect animated foliage. Requires the game and GPU feature support; memory use varies by title. Generated output can raise utilization, so monitor temperature and noise.

A practical tuning procedure

  1. Confirm requirements. Check the game’s minimum and recommended hardware, operating-system version and API support. A system below the minimum can require compromises that no preset fixes.
  2. Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for the GPU. If the vendor provides a clean-install option and problems began after several updates, use it to remove stale profiles.
  3. Apply the High baseline. Select the values in the starting table, native output resolution, Quality upscaling and a cap matched to the display.
  4. Reproduce the problem. Test a mature farm, a dense tree area, a town and a weather scene using the same save and route.
  5. Identify the limit. Compare GPU utilization, CPU utilization, VRAM use and frame-time behavior. Do not lower every slider at once.
  6. Change one control. For a GPU limit, start with shadows, then reflections or global illumination, foliage or view distance, and effects. For a CPU limit, look for simulation, crowd or streaming controls.
  7. Re-test the heavy scene. Keep a change only if it improves the frame-time graph without an unacceptable visual loss.
  8. Add frame generation only after the base rate is healthy. Enable latency reduction and check for ghosting around thin geometry.
  9. Set synchronization. Use adaptive sync when supported, or V-Sync when tearing is visible, with one cap near the refresh rate.
  10. Save the profile. Record the target, upscaler mode and the one or two compromises that solved the bottleneck so a future patch can be compared consistently.

Fix stutter that graphics sliders cannot solve

Background software and overlays

Close browsers and other applications that consume CPU time or RAM. Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, GPU-control and capture overlays. Re-test before changing visual settings; an overlay conflict can mimic a graphics bottleneck.

Storage and streaming

Install the game on the fastest available SSD. Obsidian Entertainment Support recommends a fast NVMe drive where possible and discourages mechanical hard drives for modern streaming-heavy games. Keep approximately 10–20 GB free on the game drive so the operating system and game can manage temporary data.

Shader and patch changes

After a major patch or driver update, the first trip through an area can compile shaders or rebuild caches. Allow the game to finish any built-in shader process, then repeat the same route. If stutter persists, verify files through the launcher and perform the clean driver installation described above.

Heat and power limits

Watch temperatures and clock speeds during a long session. An uncapped frame rate can push the GPU into a thermal or power limit even when the average FPS looks high. A sensible cap often removes those repeated clock swings without making the image softer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing Ultra first: Ultra often spends performance on shadows, reflections and distance that are difficult to notice during play.
  • Lowering textures to fix every slowdown: Textures mainly address VRAM and streaming pressure, not all GPU workloads.
  • Using Performance upscaling immediately: It may solve a GPU deficit but can make crop rows, fences and foliage visibly unstable.
  • Counting generated frames as native performance: Generated FPS improves presentation smoothness, not simulation responsiveness.
  • Chasing a peak number: A cap that survives the busiest farm and town scenes produces more consistent input and camera motion.
  • Changing many sliders at once: You lose the ability to identify which compromise helped and which one damaged image quality.

Bottom line

Use High as the foundation, native output resolution and Quality upscaling. Cap the game at a rate it can sustain, lower shadows before textures, and then address reflections, foliage, view distance and effects according to the scene that is slow. Keep frame generation for systems with a healthy native frame rate, and investigate CPU limits, overlays, drivers and storage before sacrificing image quality for a stutter that graphics settings cannot cure.
