Best graphics and gameplay settings for Total War: Shogun 2 on modern PCs

Start Total War: SHOGUN 2 at your monitor’s native resolution and the highest quality that remains smooth. If battles slow down, reduce settings in this order: resolution, vertical synchronisation, particle effects, anti-aliasing, and texture filtering. Then lower texture quality, unit size, fleet size, trees, terrain, ambient shadows, bloom, heat haze, vignette, and blood effects as necessary. This order follows Feral Interactive’s documented performance ranking, not a modern PC benchmark, so change one setting at a time and keep the best visual balance for your hardware.

What “best” means on a modern PC

There is no single universal preset for every modern computer. Feral identifies CPU speed, system memory, graphics hardware and the selected options as performance factors. The same setting combination can therefore feel smooth on one machine and slow during a large battle on another. The practical target is stable responsiveness at native resolution, not the highest option shown in the menu.

Feral’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 ReadMe orders its documented options by the expected performance gain from reducing them. That list was based on a Mac test platform, so treat it as vendor guidance about the relative cost of options rather than a current Windows, Linux or 2026 graphics-card benchmark. The source does not establish a guaranteed frame rate or a percentage improvement for any setting.

A sensible starting baseline

  • Use the display’s native resolution if the campaign map and battles remain responsive.
  • Choose the highest particle, texture and terrain quality that does not produce sustained slowdowns in the largest battles you normally play.
  • Keep unit size high enough that formations remain readable; reduce it only after the major rendering options have been tried.
  • Leave optional effects enabled initially, then remove the least important effects one by one when you need more headroom.

This approach avoids lowering every option unnecessarily. It also makes troubleshooting possible: if performance changes after a single adjustment, you know which trade-off produced it.

Where to find the graphics settings

You can configure the legacy game before launching a campaign in the pre-game Options window under Display. After launching, use Main Menu → Options → Graphics. Feral notes that the options exposed can vary with the detected hardware and with combinations of other settings; an option missing on one computer is not necessarily a software fault.

Apply a change, load the same type of battle or campaign view, and observe whether the slowdown you care about changes. A setting that helps a battle may have little effect on a quiet campaign map, so test the scene where the problem actually occurs.

The recommended performance-tuning order

Reduce one item at a time, moving down this list only when the current change is insufficient. The order reflects Feral’s relative ranking; it does not promise a fixed number of frames per second.

Order Setting What to try Visual or gameplay trade-off
1 Resolution Keep native resolution when smooth. If necessary, select a lower resolution that preserves your display’s aspect ratio. The whole image becomes less detailed or softer, but this is the first reduction in Feral’s list.
2 Vertical synchronisation Turn V-sync off when you need additional performance. It can allow visible tearing because the display is no longer synchronised with completed frames.
3 Particle effects Step down from Ultra toward Medium or Low. Smoke, dust, fire and other battlefield effects become less elaborate.
4 Anti-aliasing Disable MLAA if more performance is required. Diagonal edges can look more jagged, especially around units and buildings.
5 Texture filtering Move from 16x to 4x, then to Trilinear if needed. Surfaces viewed at a shallow angle appear less crisp at distance.

1. Resolution: preserve native output first

Resolution changes the number of pixels the graphics hardware must draw every frame. Feral’s illustrative legacy comparison lists 2560×1440 as slower than 1280×1024, which is slower than 1024×768. Those figures demonstrate the direction of the cost; they are not a recommendation to run a modern widescreen monitor at one of those older resolutions. Start with the panel’s native mode, then try the next lower mode that does not introduce a distorted aspect ratio or an unnecessarily blurry image.

If a lower resolution makes the interface difficult to read, restore native resolution and continue with particles, MLAA and filtering instead. A sharp interface is often more useful in a strategy game than a small gain obtained by running an unsuitable display mode.

2. Vertical synchronisation: smooth presentation versus headroom

Feral lists disabling vertical synchronisation as faster. Turn it off when frame delivery is the immediate problem. The trade-off is possible tearing: a camera pan can show portions of two frames at once. If tearing is more distracting than a modest slowdown, turn V-sync back on and reduce a later setting instead. The ReadMe establishes the performance ordering, not a universal preference for one presentation mode.

3. Particle effects: the first major visual cut

Particle quality controls effects such as smoke, dust, sparks and fire that become dense when many units fight. Move from Ultra to Medium before dropping every other visual option. This keeps textures, terrain and the overall scene intact while reducing the most transient effects. If the battle remains slow, try Low and compare a large engagement rather than a quiet deployment phase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Anti-aliasing: disable MLAA before sacrificing textures

Feral specifically identifies disabling MLAA as a faster choice. MLAA smooths high-contrast edges; removing it can make banners, walls and unit silhouettes look more jagged, but it leaves texture resolution and terrain detail untouched. On a monitor where jagged edges are tolerable, this is a relatively contained visual compromise.

5. Texture filtering: reduce distant surface clarity gradually

The documented progression is 16x, then 4x, then Trilinear. Try 4x first. If that is still not enough, use Trilinear. Filtering changes how ground, roads and other textures look as they recede into the scene; it does not remove the textures themselves. Keeping the highest level that your system can sustain helps the campaign map and battlefields retain depth.

Additional effects to lower after the first five

When resolution, V-sync, particles, MLAA and filtering have not solved the slowdown, Feral lists several further options to reduce incrementally. Work through only the effects you are willing to trade away:

  • Texture quality: Lowering it reduces surface detail and can reduce memory pressure, at the cost of sharper materials and buildings.
  • Unit size: A smaller setting displays fewer soldiers in each formation. Battles may run more easily, but the visual scale and the immediate readability of army strength change.
  • Maximum fleet size: Reduce it if naval scenes with many ships are the problem. Fewer ships can appear in the largest fleet engagements.
  • Trees: Lower tree quality or density when forested maps cause a drop. Vegetation becomes less full or detailed.
  • Terrain quality: Reduce it when hills, ground contours and landscape detail are less important than a stable battle view.
  • Distortion and heat haze: Turn these down to simplify shimmering or heat-based atmospheric effects.
  • HDR and light bloom: Reduce or disable them for less intense lighting and glow around bright areas.
  • Vignette: Disable it if the edge-darkening effect is not important to you.
  • SSAO or ambient shadow: Lower it to reduce contact-shadow detail around units and objects.
  • Blood effects: Disable optional blood effects if they are installed and unnecessary. Feral notes that these effects require the Blood Pack DLC.

Do not lower every item at once. For example, if reducing ambient shadow fixes the battle slowdown, there is no reason to sacrifice tree detail as well. Conversely, if a large naval battle is the only problem, fleet size is a more targeted change than lowering all campaign visuals.

Gameplay-facing settings and battle readability

Unit size

Unit size is both a performance control and a scale preference. Large formations make historical battles feel more imposing and let you read the relationship between armies at a glance. Smaller formations can be useful on a computer that slows down when many units are visible. Lower this only after the leading graphics-cost settings, because changing it alters how the battle itself is represented rather than merely removing an effect.

Maximum fleet size

Naval battles can expose a different bottleneck from land battles. If campaign performance is acceptable but a large fleet engagement is not, reduce maximum fleet size before changing every land-oriented effect. This preserves more of the visual quality in ordinary battles while limiting the most crowded naval scenes.

Floating flags on Linux

For persistent slow battles on Linux after reducing graphics settings, Feral’s Linux FAQ suggests disabling floating flags for both land units and ships. Use Main Menu → Options → Battle Interface → Floating flags → Never, apply it to the land-unit and ship choices, and test the same type of battle again.

This is a troubleshooting step that may help, not a guaranteed fix and not a Windows-specific recommendation. Feral says the game was fully tested on Ubuntu 16.04; other current Linux distributions may work, but that statement does not provide supported-status assurance for every modern distribution.

Practical profiles for different priorities

These are starting profiles derived from the documented trade-offs, not tested presets with promised frame rates. Adjust individual options if one particular scene remains slow.

Priority Resolution and synchronisation Effects Unit and scene detail When to choose it
Image-first Native resolution; V-sync on if tearing is unacceptable. Ultra particles, MLAA enabled, 16x filtering, with other effects high. High unit and fleet sizes; retain trees, terrain, shadows and bloom. Your largest battles remain responsive and you want maximum visual detail.
Balanced Native resolution; turn V-sync off only if needed. Particles at Medium or High, MLAA disabled if required, filtering at 4x. Keep unit size high; lower ambient shadow, bloom or heat haze before reducing the scene broadly. You want a sharp interface and readable armies with fewer expensive effects.
Performance-first Use the lowest acceptable aspect-ratio-matched resolution; V-sync off. Particles Low, MLAA off, Trilinear filtering and reduced texture quality. Lower unit size and fleet size; reduce trees, terrain, SSAO, haze, bloom and optional blood. Large battles remain slow after the earlier steps and smooth control matters most.

Diagnosing why battles are lagging

The campaign map is fine, but battles slow down

Battle scenes add particles, units, shadows, trees and terrain interactions that are not always visible on the campaign map. Start at the top of the tuning order, then target particles, unit size, trees, ambient shadows and fleet size according to whether the problem is on land or at sea. If you use Linux, apply the floating-flag test after those reductions.

Everything is slow, including menus and the campaign view

Begin with resolution and then work through V-sync, particles, MLAA and filtering. Feral identifies processor speed, RAM and graphics hardware as performance factors, so a settings change cannot compensate for every system limitation. The available options may also change with the hardware detected; record which settings are actually exposed rather than assuming that every installation has the same menu.

Only a particular visual effect causes a hitch

Lower that effect instead of switching to the lowest global quality. Smoke-heavy engagements point toward particles; distant ground softness points toward filtering; halos and glowing lights point toward bloom or HDR; contact darkness around soldiers points toward SSAO or ambient shadow. Make one change, repeat the same camera movement or battle, and keep the change only if it addresses the symptom.

You want a numeric FPS promise

The available vendor material does not provide modern PC benchmarks, frame-rate percentages or a hardware-to-FPS chart. Feral’s ranking tells you which reductions are expected to help more, while the Steam listing’s old requirements describe a legacy platform target. Neither source can establish what a current GPU, processor or memory configuration will deliver in a specific battle.

Original SHOGUN 2 versus the 2026 Complete Edition

The original game and the newly released edition should not be treated as having identical menus or performance behavior. SEGA says Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition launched for PC on October 13, 2026, with updated lighting, shadows and textures, interface scaling for 1440p and 4K, modernised controls, Mod.io support and a 64-bit upgrade. The available documentation does not provide a complete new-edition graphics manual or comparative performance tests, so apply the legacy instructions to the original game and verify labels in the Complete Edition interface.

Question Original SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition
Steam availability SEGA says standalone Steam sales ended September 28, 2026. Existing owners can continue playing. Steam purchasers receive the original SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC except the Blood Pack.
Other listed PC storefronts The legacy standalone product is not the same purchase path described for the new launch. SEGA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG; purchases on the other listed PC storefronts include Complete Edition only.
Edition features Use the legacy menus and settings described in Feral’s ReadMe. Updated lighting, shadows and textures; 1440p/4K UI scaling; modernised controls; Mod.io support; 64-bit upgrade.
Existing Steam owners Remain able to play the game. SEGA says missing legacy DLC is supplied at no additional cost. A time-limited 75% loyalty discount was available through November 12, 2026.
US list price at launch Not stated as a current standalone price after the sale ended. $39.99 US list price at the October 13, 2026 launch.

These edition and price details come from SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ. A Complete Edition purchase should not be used as evidence that every legacy graphics label, preset or performance characteristic is unchanged.

How to set up and validate your final configuration

  1. Open Options → Display before launch, or use Main Menu → Options → Graphics in the game.
  2. Set the display to its native resolution and choose the highest quality values that do not slow your normal battle scenes.
  3. Play or replay a representative large battle, not only a quiet campaign turn.
  4. If performance is poor, change resolution first, then V-sync, particles, MLAA and texture filtering in that order.
  5. After each change, repeat a comparable camera movement or engagement so the result is meaningful.
  6. Only then reduce texture quality, unit size, fleet size, trees, terrain, heat haze, HDR/bloom, vignette, SSAO and optional blood effects.
  7. If you are on Linux and battles remain slow, set floating flags to Never for both land units and ships and test again.
  8. Write down the final values. If a future driver, display or edition update changes the behavior, you can restore the last known-good configuration instead of starting from the lowest preset.

What the legacy requirements can—and cannot—tell you

The Steam listing contains operating-system and hardware requirements for the legacy release. Those requirements are not modern recommended specifications, are not proof of compatibility with every current Windows or Linux configuration, and do not constitute a benchmark for contemporary graphics cards. Use the in-game options and the tuning order above to establish what your own system can sustain.

For Linux specifically, use Feral’s support statement as a compatibility qualification rather than a universal rule: Ubuntu 16.04 was fully tested, while other distributions may work without being covered by that tested-support statement. For the Complete Edition, check the current storefront and edition information separately because its 64-bit architecture and rendering updates change the technical context.
