Best Graphics and Gameplay Settings for Mass Effect Legendary Edition

There is no publisher-verified “best” preset for Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The most reliable approach is to start at your display’s native resolution, use the game’s calibration screens, and then trade image clarity for performance in small, reversible steps. Electronic Arts documents the available graphics, control and gameplay options, but does not publish a setting-by-setting benchmark or a universal frame-rate preset.

This guide gives you a practical baseline for PC, explains what each important option changes, and provides a method for improving performance without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.

What the best settings actually mean

Your ideal configuration depends on three things: the resolution and capabilities of your display, the hardware in your PC, and your tolerance for motion effects or lower visual detail. A setting that is sensible on a 4K television may be wasteful on a 1080p monitor, while a laptop that meets the minimum requirements may need a lower resolution to maintain comfortable play.

EA describes the remaster’s visual goal as improving the trilogy while preserving its identity: “Our goal from the onset was to improve and enhance the visuals while staying true to the original aesthetics of the trilogy that have become so iconic and genre-defining over the past decade.” You can read the full explanation in EA’s Visual Improvements article.

#1 Best Overall
Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Use the following order when tuning:

  1. Confirm that your PC meets the published requirements.
  2. Select the display mode and resolution your system can sustain.
  3. Calibrate brightness, and configure HDR only if your display supports it properly.
  4. Test motion blur and camera sensitivity for comfort.
  5. Choose gameplay and accessibility options separately from image-quality decisions.

Official PC features and requirements

EA confirms native controller support, 21:9 display support and DirectX 11 compatibility on PC in its Gameplay Calibrations article. The PC accessibility overview also documents window mode, motion blur, brightness and high-definition resolution calibration, control customization, camera sensitivity, difficulty, subtitles and hints.

The requirements below are the publisher’s listed tiers for the collection. They are compatibility targets, not measured frame-rate results or guarantees that every setting will run at a particular speed.

Component Minimum tier Recommended tier How to interpret it
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit EA’s listed PC operating-system requirement.
Memory 8 GB 16 GB More memory gives the recommended tier additional headroom, but EA does not tie either figure to a specific frame rate.
Processor Core i5-3570 class Core i7-7700 class These are the processor classes shown on EA’s product page.
Graphics card GeForce GTX 760 or Radeon 7970/R9 280X class GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon Vega 56 class Use the tier as a starting point for expectations rather than as a benchmark.
Storage 120 GB 120 GB EA lists the same storage figure for both tiers.

EA also describes the collection as optimized for 4K Ultra HD and identifies HDR compatibility on the product information page. Those are supported capabilities, not a promise that every computer can render 4K smoothly or that HDR will look correct without display-specific calibration. See the official product and requirements page and EA’s launch announcement.

A dependable baseline for a new installation

Start with this neutral configuration, then adjust only one variable at a time. It avoids chasing a fictional “ultra” recipe and makes it clear which change solved a problem.

Option Starting choice Reason
Window mode Exclusive fullscreen or the game’s fullscreen choice, if available Use the mode that gives your system the most consistent presentation. If switching applications is more important, use borderless/windowed instead.
Resolution Your display’s native resolution Native output normally gives the sharpest text and geometry. Lower it only after checking performance.
Brightness Run the in-game calibration Panel brightness and room lighting vary too much for a universal numeric value.
HDR Off initially; enable only on a compatible display Calibrate it in game and keep it only if highlights, shadows and skin tones look better on your screen.
Motion blur Personal preference Try both states. EA documents the option but does not publish its performance cost.
Camera sensitivity Middle of the available range Make a short adjustment while moving and aiming; there is no image-quality advantage to a particular value.
Controller or keyboard/mouse Whichever gives you better control Native PC controller support is available, and controls can be customized.

How to tune resolution for image quality and performance

1. Begin at native resolution

Set the game to the panel’s actual pixel dimensions when your hardware can maintain a comfortable experience. This avoids the softness caused by scaling a lower internal image to a higher-resolution display. On a 16:9 monitor, that may be 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160; the correct choice is the one your display reports as native, not a value selected because it sounds faster or sharper.

2. Check demanding scenes rather than the opening menu

Move through an area with combat, effects and several characters on screen. Menus and quiet corridors are poor tests because they do not represent the heaviest workload. EA has not published a current frame-rate guarantee for any resolution, so judge consistency on your own system instead of targeting an unsupported number.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

3. Lower resolution in small steps when necessary

If performance is uncomfortable, first try the next lower resolution offered by the game or your display. Recheck the same type of scene after each change. A modest reduction can be less distracting than immediately abandoning the display’s native aspect ratio or making several changes at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restore clarity if the reduction is too visible

When a lower resolution looks noticeably soft, return to native output and accept a lower performance target, or test other available image options one at a time. The official documentation does not identify which individual option costs the most performance, so it would be misleading to promise that one particular toggle is always the correct sacrifice.

Brightness and HDR calibration

Brightness

Use the game’s brightness or high-definition calibration screen rather than copying a number from another player. The correct point depends on the display’s black level, its picture mode and the light in your room. Adjust until the darkest detail is barely distinguishable without making black areas look gray, then verify the result in an ordinary gameplay location.

When HDR is worth enabling

HDR requires a compatible display and a platform configuration that is actually outputting HDR. Turn it on only after enabling HDR at the system and display level, if those steps are required by your setup. Run the in-game calibration and inspect bright effects, dark interiors and faces. Keep HDR enabled when the result preserves shadow detail and highlights without looking washed out or excessively dim; otherwise, SDR can be the better-looking choice on that particular screen.

EA confirms HDR compatibility for the collection, but it does not provide a universal calibration value. A setting that looks correct on one television can clip highlights or crush shadows on another.

Motion blur: comfort first, performance second

Motion blur is an available graphics option in the PC accessibility information. It blends frames during camera movement to create a cinematic streak. Some players prefer that presentation; others find it reduces clarity, causes eye strain or makes aiming feel less precise.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
  • Try it on if you like the original trilogy’s film-like movement and do not find moving scenes uncomfortable.
  • Try it off if text, targets or environmental details become hard to follow during turns.
  • Do not assume a performance gain. EA documents the option but does not quantify its frame-time cost, so treat the change as a comfort and clarity decision unless your own testing shows otherwise.

Ultrawide and display-mode choices

EA identifies 21:9 display support on PC. Select the native 21:9 resolution when your monitor supports it and check both gameplay and cinematics. The confirmation of 21:9 support does not establish that every scene, menu or video sequence uses the same framing, so avoid assuming that all content will behave identically across every wider aspect ratio.

For a standard widescreen monitor, use its native 16:9 resolution unless performance requires a change. Borderless/windowed mode can be convenient for switching applications, while fullscreen may suit players who want the game to control the display mode directly. Choose based on stability and convenience; neither mode is a guaranteed image-quality winner in EA’s documentation.

Controls and camera sensitivity

EA lists native PC controller support and configurable controls. Its feature description is concise: “Native controller and 21:9 display support on PC, with DirectX 11 compatibility.” A controller is therefore an optional input choice, not a required graphics upgrade.

Keyboard and mouse

  • Map frequently used commands to keys you can reach without releasing movement.
  • Adjust camera sensitivity gradually while walking, aiming and rotating in combat.
  • Choose a value that lets you turn quickly without repeatedly overshooting targets.

Controller

  • Use the game’s native controller configuration rather than adding unnecessary remapping layers.
  • Begin near the default sensitivity, then make one small change at a time.
  • Check aiming, menu navigation and vehicle or other context-sensitive controls before committing to a new layout.

There is no universally correct sensitivity value. The useful test is whether you can make a controlled short turn and a rapid 180-degree turn without fighting the camera.

Gameplay settings are separate from graphics

Difficulty, subtitles and hints affect challenge, information and accessibility—not texture detail, resolution or HDR quality. Select them according to the experience you want.

Difficulty

Choose the level that keeps combat engaging without making progress frustrating. If you are revisiting the trilogy for its story, a lower setting can reduce combat interruption; if build planning and tactical encounters are the attraction, a higher setting may be more appropriate. Changing difficulty is a gameplay decision, not a way to improve visual performance.

Hints

Hints can help first-time players understand systems and objectives. Experienced players may prefer fewer prompts. Treat the setting as an information preference rather than an optimization toggle.

Practical profiles by hardware level

These are starting strategies derived from the published requirement tiers, not measured presets. The official requirements do not establish a guaranteed frame rate for any profile.

PC close to the minimum tier

  • Use the display’s native resolution first, then lower it if busy scenes are not comfortable.
  • Prefer a stable, less ambitious resolution over a high-resolution image that repeatedly stutters.
  • Test motion blur both ways; choose the clearer option for your eyes rather than expecting a specific performance improvement.
  • Use SDR if HDR calibration produces a dim or washed-out image.
  • Keep background applications closed when memory is limited to the listed 8 GB minimum.

PC around the recommended tier

  • Start at native 1080p or 1440p, depending on the monitor.
  • Try 4K only when the graphics card, display and observed performance all support it comfortably.
  • Use HDR after calibration, not simply because the display advertises HDR.
  • Keep motion blur based on comfort and readability.

High-resolution or high-headroom PC

  • Use the panel’s native 4K output when the system sustains it in demanding scenes.
  • Check that HDR remains correctly calibrated after changing display picture modes.
  • Use 21:9 native output on a supported ultrawide, while checking cinematics and menus for framing differences.
  • Do not infer a higher frame rate from the presence of more powerful hardware; EA publishes capability and requirement information, not a benchmark table.

How to improve performance without guesswork

  1. Record the baseline. Note the current resolution, window mode, HDR state and motion-blur state.
  2. Reproduce the problem. Use the same demanding type of scene each time so that comparisons are meaningful.
  3. Change one setting. Lower resolution or adjust one available graphics option, then repeat the same scene.
  4. Check image quality. Look at fine environmental detail, dialogue text, faces and dark areas—not only movement smoothness.
  5. Keep the change only if it helps. If the visual loss is obvious and the improvement is not, restore the previous value.
  6. Test HDR separately. Compare calibrated HDR and SDR on the same display; do not change HDR and resolution simultaneously.
  7. Test controls separately. Camera sensitivity and input layout affect comfort but do not solve a rendering bottleneck.

Because the official sources do not quantify the performance cost of individual options, this controlled process is more defensible than claiming that a particular toggle always delivers a fixed percentage improvement.

Common problems and targeted fixes

The image looks soft

Confirm that the game is using the display’s native resolution and the correct aspect ratio. If you lowered resolution to improve performance, compare the next higher option in the same scene. Also check that the display itself is not applying an unintended scaling or sharpening mode.

HDR looks gray, dim or overly bright

Verify HDR is enabled in the operating system and display, rerun the game’s calibration, and inspect both dark interiors and bright effects. If the calibrated result still looks worse than SDR, leave HDR disabled on that display.

Camera movement feels uncomfortable

Turn motion blur off and test again. If the problem remains, lower camera sensitivity in a small step and check movement in both exploration and combat. The documented controls allow adjustment; there is no required numeric value.

Ultrawide framing seems inconsistent

EA confirms 21:9 support, but that confirmation does not promise identical framing for every cinematic, menu or aspect ratio. Check the scenes you care about and use the supported native resolution that gives the least distracting result.

Performance is still poor after lowering resolution

Confirm the PC is using the intended graphics processor, close unnecessary applications, and compare the system with EA’s listed minimum and recommended tiers. If the hardware is below the minimum, the game may require compromises beyond the settings documented in the accessibility overview. Avoid assuming that HDR, motion blur or controller choice is the primary cause without testing.

Recommended decision checklist

  • Does the PC meet the Windows 10 64-bit, memory, processor, graphics and 120 GB storage requirements listed by EA?
  • Is the selected resolution native to the monitor or television?
  • Has brightness been calibrated inside the game?
  • Was HDR tested on the actual compatible display rather than enabled by default?
  • Was motion blur chosen for comfort and clarity?
  • Was camera sensitivity adjusted through a short personal test?
  • Are difficulty, subtitles and hints configured for the player’s needs rather than mistaken for graphics options?
  • On PC, has 21:9 support been checked in both gameplay and the types of cinematics you watch most?

Why there is no single winning preset

The available official material establishes features, requirements and visual intent, but not a current setting-by-setting benchmark. It does not show which individual option costs the most performance, nor does it promise a frame rate for 1080p, 1440p or 4K. Consequently, any article claiming one universal “best” combination would be presenting an unsupported test result as fact.

The practical answer is to preserve native resolution when your system can handle it, calibrate brightness and HDR on the display you actually use, select motion blur and controls for comfort, and reduce resolution or other available image options only when your own repeatable test shows that the change is worthwhile. That method works across the minimum and recommended hardware tiers without pretending that one player’s screen or PC defines the correct setting for everyone.
