What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by identifying your PC edition. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in the Master Collection and the older Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance Windows port are separate releases, so a setting or fix for one should not be assumed to work on the other. For the Master Collection, begin with the controls and screen options in the pause menu, use the highest comfortable resolution your installed build actually offers, and change the controller layout only where the default feels wrong. Add a community fix only when you have a specific resolution, aspect-ratio, HUD, or speed problem and have checked that the current release still supports your patch.
Which PC version of Metal Gear Solid 2 are you using?
The edition determines which menus, fixes, and compatibility advice apply. The Master Collection PC release is a modern re-release with an official online manual. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is the expanded 2002 version that received an older Windows port. They are not interchangeable installations.

| Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Master Collection Version), PC | The official manual documents controller customization, keyboard and mouse settings, mouse sensitivity, and a Windowed Mode option. A PCGamingWiki search-result report for version 2.0.0 lists four internal upscaling choices. | Your current patch and display may expose different options from the version 2.0.0 report. |
| Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, older Windows port | PCGamingWiki search results mention its own resolution configuration and controller remapping. | The older port has separate fixes and compatibility behavior; do not apply Master Collection instructions to it without checking the port-specific documentation. |
If you are unsure, check the product name in your launcher or the executable and installation folder before changing anything. The rest of the main procedure below assumes the Master Collection version unless a heading says otherwise.

There is no single officially designated “best” resolution or controller map. Konami’s manual says, “From the pause menu, you can change controller and screen settings, and access the online manual.” That makes the in-game menu the safest first step.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
| Area | Recommended starting point | Why this is a starting point, not a universal rule |
|---|---|---|
| Screen mode | Use the mode you prefer in the Screen menu; select Windowed Mode when you need desktop access or a borderless-style workaround from your operating system. | The manual confirms Windowed Mode, but does not prescribe a preferred presentation. |
| Internal resolution | Choose the highest option that your display can show comfortably and that your current build actually lists. | PCGamingWiki’s version 2.0.0 report lists 1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440, and 3840×2160; those values may not describe every later build or configuration. |
| Controller | Keep the default gamepad layout initially, then remap only uncomfortable actions in Control Settings. | Konami confirms custom assignments but does not name a preferred mapping. |
| Keyboard and mouse | Use the documented keyboard/mouse settings and adjust mouse sensitivity gradually if aiming or camera movement feels too slow or fast. | The manual confirms these controls and sensitivity options without prescribing a value. |
| Frame rate troubleshooting | If gameplay is visibly running too fast, try a 60 FPS cap as a diagnostic step. | This is advice from a community guide, not an official blanket requirement or a guaranteed fix for every performance issue. |
Step-by-step: set up the Master Collection without mods
- Pause the game. Open the pause menu during play. The manual places both controller and screen configuration there.
- Open Control Settings. Review the current gamepad assignments before changing them. The official manual states that controller button assignments can be customized, except for buttons that are not listed.
- Test the default layout first. Play long enough to use movement, camera control, attack, item or weapon selection, and the actions shown by on-screen prompts. This gives you a reference point and avoids remapping a button that only feels unfamiliar during the first few minutes.
- Change one assignment at a time. Move the action that causes discomfort to a button you can reach without releasing movement or camera control. Save or confirm the assignment using the prompt shown by your build, then test it immediately.
- Check prompts after remapping. In-game prompts can still reflect the action names or button symbols used by the current configuration. If a prompt and your physical button no longer feel intuitive, revise the map rather than memorizing a confusing exception.
- Open Screen settings. Select the available display mode and inspect the resolution or internal-upscaling choices exposed by your installation. The manual confirms a Windowed Mode option.
- Apply and inspect several scenes. Check a dark area, a bright outdoor area, menus, and HUD text. A setting that looks sharp in gameplay can still make interface text uncomfortable on a high-density display.
- Only then consider a community fix. If the native menu gives you a readable image and stable behavior, there is no need to add maintenance work merely because a mod exists.
Choosing a graphics resolution
What the version 2.0.0 report lists
PCGamingWiki’s search-result excerpt for Master Collection version 2.0.0 reports these internal upscaling choices:
| Reported option | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|
| Default — 1280×720 | A lower-load choice or a pixel-faithful starting point when the display and your viewing distance make the interface readable. |
| FHD — 1920×1080 | A practical choice for a 1080p monitor or television. |
| WQHD — 2560×1440 | A natural match for a 1440p display when that option is present in your build. |
| 4K — 3840×2160 | A match for a 4K display when your system and the game build expose it comfortably. |
These are reported technical options, not a test showing that one is fastest or visually superior on every PC. The report is specifically tied to version 2.0.0, and the available evidence does not establish that every current installation presents the same list. Treat the table as a checklist of possibilities: open your own Screen menu and use what is actually available.
Match the setting to the display, not the marketing label
If your monitor is 1920×1080, FHD is the straightforward native match. On a 2560×1440 panel, WQHD can avoid unnecessary scaling when your build offers it. On a 3840×2160 display, 4K can make the image cleaner, but small interface elements may remain difficult to read because the game’s original assets and HUD were not designed as a modern high-density interface.
On a television or a monitor viewed from farther away, readability matters more than selecting the largest number. A lower internal resolution can be the better choice if it keeps prompts legible and avoids a distracting scaling pattern. Conversely, if the image looks soft on a large display, step up one reported option and compare the HUD, menus, and fine environmental details rather than judging only a single screenshot.
Windowed Mode
The official manual documents a Windowed Mode switch in the Screen settings. Use it when you need to switch applications frequently, capture the game, or avoid a full-screen mode that behaves poorly with your desktop. The manual does not document a separate borderless option, so do not assume that Windowed Mode and borderless fullscreen are identical in your build.

Controller settings that work for Raiden’s movement and actions
Why the default is the right baseline
Raiden’s controls combine movement, camera management, attacks, equipment, and context-sensitive actions. A complete remap changes several muscle-memory relationships at once. Starting from the default lets you discover whether a problem is an actual ergonomic issue or simply unfamiliarity with the original layout.
A safe remapping method
- Identify the failing action. Decide whether the problem is a hard-to-reach face button, an awkward shoulder-button combination, an accidental press, or a conflict between movement and camera control.
- Move only that action. Avoid changing a whole cluster when one assignment is the source of discomfort. Fewer changes make prompts and muscle memory easier to reconcile.
- Preserve paired actions. If two actions are frequently used together, place them where both can be reached without moving your thumb or releasing the stick you need for movement.
- Test in a low-risk area. Confirm the new button with ordinary movement and menu prompts before relying on it during combat or a timed sequence.
- Record the final map. A quick note or screenshot prevents confusion if you switch between gamepad and keyboard or reinstall the game.
Konami’s wording is deliberately limited: “In controller settings, you can customize controller button assignments (excluding buttons not listed).” That means an unavailable assignment is a game limitation, not necessarily a controller fault. Do not spend time troubleshooting hardware for an action the menu does not expose.
When a new controller is, and is not, necessary
The PC manual’s controller options mean an existing PC-compatible gamepad is sufficient for this setup. A new controller is optional, not a requirement. Consider replacing hardware only if the device has drift, unreliable buttons, an input mode that the game cannot see, or a shape that causes pain after you have tried a sensible remap. No particular model is established as best by the available documentation.
Keyboard and mouse settings
The Master Collection manual also documents keyboard and mouse settings, including mouse sensitivity. Start with the keyboard and mouse values exposed by your installation, then make small sensitivity changes rather than moving immediately to an extreme.
- Lower sensitivity if small hand movements produce camera or aiming changes larger than you can control.
- Raise sensitivity if you repeatedly lift the mouse or run out of desk space before completing a turn.
- Change one variable, play for several minutes, and reassess; changing sensitivity and key assignments simultaneously makes it difficult to identify what helped.
- Use the on-screen prompts during play to confirm which input method the game is currently displaying.
Because the official material does not publish a target sensitivity value, any number presented as universally optimal would be guesswork. The useful goal is consistent control that lets you perform the same movement without conscious correction.

If the game runs too fast: use the 60 FPS cap as a diagnostic
A Steam community guide by DoubleD, last updated September 30, 2024, advises capping the frame rate at 60 FPS when gameplay is running unusually fast. Treat that as a troubleshooting step for that specific symptom, not as an official universal recommendation.
- Confirm the symptom. Look for accelerated movement, animation, or timing rather than assuming every stutter is a frame-rate problem.
- Apply a 60 FPS cap through the control available on your system. Use the game, driver, or launcher setting that you already trust; the guide’s recommendation establishes the target, not a single mandatory tool.
- Retest the same scene. Compare movement and timing before and after the cap.
- Remove the cap if it does not address the symptom. A cap cannot correct every input, display, or compatibility problem, and the community advice is not a guarantee.
No controlled test establishes that 60 FPS is required for every Master Collection configuration. If your game is not running too fast, do not add a cap solely because it appears in a troubleshooting list.
MGSHDFix: when an optional community fix makes sense
The same community guide lists MGSHDFix version 2.3 features including native or custom resolution, aspect-ratio fixes, and HUD fixes above 720p. Those features can be useful when the native settings do not produce the image or interface behavior you need.
Use it for a defined problem
- Resolution problem: the built-in options do not include a comfortable value for your display.
- Aspect-ratio problem: the picture is visibly stretched, cropped, or letterboxed in a way the native menu does not resolve.
- HUD problem: interface placement or scaling is uncomfortable above 720p.
Understand the maintenance cost
MGSHDFix is community software, not a Konami feature. The available guide was last updated on September 30, 2024, and a reader comment from 2025 says the guide is outdated and that mods had been consolidated. Current Master Collection patch notes and current MGSHDFix compatibility were not independently verified here. Before installing, check the mod author’s present release, supported game version, installation method, and removal instructions. Do not copy an old download or setup procedure solely because it appears in that guide.
Keep a clean, unmodified configuration available. If an update changes the executable, if the game stops launching, or if the HUD becomes misaligned, remove the community files according to the current author’s instructions and retest the native settings. Do not assume that a fix made for Substance works on the Master Collection or vice versa.

What changes for the older Substance Windows port?
Substance is the PC port of the expanded 2002 re-release, not the Master Collection build. PCGamingWiki search results mention its own resolution configuration and controller remapping. Because those details belong to a different executable and were not available as a directly opened page here, keep Substance troubleshooting separate.
A safe Substance workflow
- Confirm that the launcher or installation identifies the game as Substance.
- Open the port’s own configuration and controller-remapping screens rather than looking for the Master Collection pause-menu labels.
- Apply only fixes documented for that Windows port and its installed patch.
- Test resolution, aspect ratio, prompts, and controller input after each change.
Do not copy Master Collection assumptions about internal upscaling values, Windowed Mode behavior, MGSHDFix compatibility, or a 60 FPS cap into Substance without port-specific evidence.
Native settings or a community fix?
| Question | Stay with native settings | Investigate a community fix |
|---|---|---|
| Does the advice match your edition and patch? | Yes; the menu is part of the installed release. | Only after the mod’s current compatibility notes identify your edition and build. |
| What are you trying to change? | Available screen mode, reported resolution choices, controller assignments, keyboard/mouse settings, or sensitivity. | Native/custom resolution, aspect ratio, or HUD behavior not solved in the menu. |
| How much maintenance is acceptable? | Minimal; updates are handled with the game. | You must track mod versions, installation files, compatibility, and removal. |
| Do you have a specific symptom? | Use the menu first for comfort and readability. | Use a fix for a defined problem, such as stretched output or a HUD issue above 720p. |
This decision avoids treating “more options” as automatically better. A mod can solve a real display problem while creating update work that a player who is already satisfied does not need.

Remapping too many buttons at once
Symptom: prompts and muscle memory become harder to follow. Recovery: restore the default layout, then change one uncomfortable action at a time and test it.
Installing an old mod guide unchanged
Symptom: the game fails to launch, the image is mis-scaled, or the HUD shifts after an update. Recovery: consult the mod author’s current release notes, remove files using the current instructions, and return to the native configuration while diagnosing.
Adding a 60 FPS cap without a speed problem
Symptom: you introduce a new limitation without solving anything. Recovery: use the cap only as a test when gameplay is running too fast, then compare the result in the same scene.

Bottom line
For the Master Collection, the best setup is the one that starts with the official pause-menu controls, uses the highest comfortable resolution your current build actually offers, and changes only the controller assignments that interfere with play. The version 2.0.0 resolution list reported by PCGamingWiki—1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440, and 3840×2160—is a useful reference, not a universal promise. Reserve MGSHDFix and the community 60 FPS advice for specific problems, and verify their current compatibility before modifying an updated installation.
