For a reliable Soul of Cinder fight, use fullscreen at your display’s native resolution, target the game’s standard 60 FPS cap, and begin with the High preset. If frame time becomes uneven, lower shadows first and post-processing second; keep resolution intact as long as possible. Use a wired or XInput-compatible controller with the default layout while learning the fight. Enable HDR only after calibrating the display, and use Steam Input only when you have a specific remapping or accessibility need.
Recommended settings at a glance
The best preset is the one that keeps camera motion, attack tells, and input timing consistent. Maximum resolution is less useful than even frame pacing when the boss changes phases or fills the arena with effects.

| Platform | Graphics and frame pacing | Controller and input |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Fullscreen; native resolution; 60 FPS target; High settings. If frame time is unstable, reduce shadows, then post-processing. Use HDR only with a correctly calibrated HDR display. | Wired or XInput-compatible pad. Keep the default layout while learning; use Steam Input for a concrete remapping need. |
| Steam Deck LCD | Start with a 40 FPS limit and 40 Hz refresh. Confirm that the cap remains stable in the Soul of Cinder arena. | Built-in controls or an XInput-compatible pad. Avoid remaps that do not solve a specific problem. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Start with a 45 FPS limit and 45 Hz refresh. Treat this as a practical starting point and verify it during both phases of the fight. | Built-in controls or an XInput-compatible pad. Keep the standard layout unless accessibility or comfort requires a change. |
| Console | Choose the platform’s highest stable performance mode when one is offered. Resolution, refresh behavior, and menu names differ by console generation. | Use the standard first-party gamepad and default layout unless an accessibility adjustment is necessary. |
The 60 FPS figure is the documented Dark Souls III engine cap. Unofficial unlockers exist, but they can introduce compatibility and timing concerns, so they are a poor trade for a single boss encounter.
Why frame pacing matters more than a higher number
Soul of Cinder’s difficulty is built around reading animation: the weapon transformation, the delayed sorcery casts, the spear lunge, and the transition into the second phase. A stable cadence makes those cues easier to track than a higher but fluctuating frame rate. The game is designed around its 60 FPS ceiling, and PCGamingWiki documents that cap along with fullscreen, borderless, HDR, FXAA, field-of-view behavior, and controller options.

Durante’s 2016 PC Gamer port analysis described the game this way: “Dark Souls III plays very well indeed at 60 FPS.” That assessment remains a useful baseline for this fight. It does not mean every modern display or driver combination will hold 60 FPS automatically; it means the normal cap is the sensible target before experimenting with unofficial modifications.
The cap and unofficial unlocks
Leave the game at its normal 60 FPS limit for a standard playthrough. An unlock can change the assumptions used by animation, physics, camera timing, or online compatibility. If you use one for testing, keep a separate, unmodified installation or profile and be prepared to remove it before returning to normal play. Do not use an unlock as the first response to a stutter that can be fixed by lowering a graphics option.
What the 2016 hardware guidance means today
PC Gamer reported that a Steam-recommended GTX 970 was sufficient for 60 FPS at the highest in-game settings in its tested scenarios in 2016. That is evidence about those test conditions, not a universal requirement or a promise for every driver, resolution, mod, or monitor. Modern hardware normally has more headroom, but laptop power limits, background capture, thermal throttling, and high-resolution output can still create uneven frame time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows PC: set up a clean 60 FPS baseline
1. Select fullscreen and native resolution
- Open the game’s System menu and enter Display Settings.
- Set Screen Mode to Fullscreen for the most direct presentation and predictable focus behavior.
- Choose the native resolution of the monitor that is displaying the game. If you use a television or an ultrawide monitor, select the panel’s actual supported mode rather than forcing a higher virtual resolution.
- Apply the change, then return to the title screen or a safe area before testing the boss arena.
Borderless mode is useful when you frequently switch applications, but fullscreen is the safer starting point for a latency-sensitive fight. If borderless mode is the only way to avoid alt-tab problems on your system, use it only after confirming that frame time remains even.
2. Start with High quality
Use the High preset first. PC Gamer’s testing found that most graphics options had limited CPU impact, with shadows standing out as the notable exception. That makes shadows the logical first reduction when the processor or frame-time budget is tight. Keep resolution unchanged while you test; dropping resolution often makes the image softer without addressing the option that is actually causing the spikes.

3. Reduce options in the right order
- Lower Shadows one step and retest the arena.
- If spikes remain, lower post-processing one step and retest.
- Only then consider reducing other quality options or resolution.
- Stop as soon as frame pacing is consistent. A stable High or mixed High/Medium profile is preferable to an unstable maximum preset.
Make one change at a time. Changing several options together hides the cause and makes it harder to return to a clean baseline. The goal is not a benchmark score; it is consistent motion during the opening sword form, the mid-fight weapon change, and the second-phase lightning attacks.
4. Treat anti-aliasing and field of view as comfort settings
FXAA is documented as an available anti-aliasing option. Leave it at the default level initially, then change it only if shimmering or softness bothers you. A sharper image is not automatically easier to read if it introduces crawling edges around the boss or environment.
Field-of-view behavior is also documented, but there is no evidence for a single universally best value for this encounter. Keep the normal game framing while learning the fight. Consider a field-of-view adjustment only for a specific comfort issue, such as motion discomfort, and test it in the arena before committing to an unofficial change.
HDR: enable it only when the display is ready
Dark Souls III supports HDR, but there is no authoritative universal brightness, paper-white, or peak-luminance number that works for every panel. Calibration depends on the display, operating system, room lighting, and console or PC output path.
A safe HDR procedure
- Calibrate HDR at the display or operating-system level first, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Confirm that the game is being output to the HDR display rather than an SDR monitor in a mixed-monitor setup.
- Enable HDR in the game and check a dark interior, a bright outdoor area, and the Soul of Cinder arena.
- Compare flame, lightning, and dark armor details. If blacks are gray, highlights are clipped, or the whole scene looks washed out, disable HDR and return to a correctly handled SDR signal.
Do not chase HDR merely because the option exists. Correct SDR with stable frame pacing is better than incorrectly mapped HDR that hides attack cues in crushed shadows or blown highlights.

Controller choice and layout
Use a wired or XInput-compatible pad
A wired controller removes one source of wireless interference and battery-related power management. An XInput-compatible controller generally offers the most predictable button mapping on Windows. A well-configured wireless pad can also work, but test it before entering the boss fog so you know that every face button, trigger, and stick is recognized.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the default layout while learning
The default layout places movement, camera, attacks, guard, item use, and weapon skills where the game’s tutorials and most community explanations expect them. Familiarity matters during a fight in which a single missed dodge can end the attempt. Learn the encounter with the standard arrangement before changing buttons for convenience.
When Steam Input is worthwhile
PCGamingWiki documents Steam Input API support. Use Steam Input when you can name the problem it solves: a controller that is not recognized correctly, a required accessibility remap, a back-button assignment for a command you cannot comfortably reach, or a need to combine an unusual controller with an XInput layout.
- In Steam, open the game’s controller settings and enable Steam Input for the title.
- Start from the official gamepad template rather than an elaborate community configuration.
- Change only the button or stick behavior you need.
- Launch the game and verify every combat input in a safe area.
Steam Controller users may see simultaneous mouse and controller recognition, as noted in PC Gamer’s testing. If the camera or menus behave as though two devices are fighting for focus, disconnect the unused device or simplify the Steam Input configuration.
Controller sensitivity has no universal number
Controller sensitivity is documented, but no authoritative source establishes one best value for Soul of Cinder. Start at the default, then make small changes based on a clear symptom: lower sensitivity if tiny stick movements make the camera overshoot; raise it only if you cannot turn quickly enough to keep the boss in view. Test each change against the same attack sequence so muscle memory remains meaningful.

Steam Deck LCD and OLED settings
SteamFPS lists 40 FPS at 40 Hz for LCD hardware and 45 FPS at 45 Hz for OLED hardware as community-measured starting points. SteamFPS explicitly says those figures were not produced from its own benchmarks, so treat them as practical starting points rather than guarantees for every Deck, operating-system version, power profile, or boss arena.
LCD: 40 FPS at 40 Hz
- Open the SteamOS Quick Access menu and go to the Performance section.
- Set the display refresh rate to 40 Hz and the frame-rate limit to 40 FPS. Menu labels can vary slightly by SteamOS release.
- Leave the game at a sensible quality preset and test the complete Soul of Cinder encounter, not just the opening seconds.
- If the cap repeatedly misses during effects or the second phase, lower shadows first, then post-processing.
The benefit is a refresh-matched cadence that can feel steadier than an unstable 60 FPS attempt. The trade-off is lower motion fluidity than a true 60 FPS lock.
OLED: 45 FPS at 45 Hz
- In the same Performance controls, choose a 45 Hz refresh rate and a 45 FPS frame limit.
- Run through both phases and watch for repeated drops rather than judging from a single quiet moment.
- If stability is not maintained, step down the graphics options in the same shadows-then-post-processing order used on PC.
OLED hardware has a different panel refresh capability, so 45/45 is a useful community starting point rather than a claim that every unit will hold that rate under all conditions.
Deck controls and external pads
The built-in controls are sufficient for the fight, and an external XInput-compatible pad is an option if its shape or stick placement suits you better. Avoid layering Steam Input remaps over the built-in layout unless you have a specific accessibility or comfort reason. Extra translation layers can make troubleshooting harder when a button appears to work in SteamOS but not in the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsole settings
Console versions differ by generation, so there is no single menu path or resolution behavior that applies to all of them. When the system or game offers a performance mode, choose the highest mode that remains stable rather than a quality mode that introduces uneven motion. If no performance selector exists, leave the game at its platform default and focus on display calibration and controller comfort.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Display and input priorities
- Use the television or monitor’s game mode to reduce display-side processing.
- Disable extra motion interpolation intended for video playback; it can make a game feel delayed or create artifacts.
- Use the standard first-party controller and default layout while learning.
- Change button assignments only when an accessibility need or a persistent comfort problem justifies it.
Exact console resolution, refresh, HDR behavior, and menu labels vary by hardware generation. Check the console’s own display information rather than assuming that a setting shown in a PC guide exists on your platform.
Boss-arena testing: verify the setting where it matters
A graphics preset that looks smooth in Firelink Shrine can still stutter in the Soul of Cinder arena. Test the actual encounter or a repeatable section of it so that your decision reflects the effects, camera movement, and phase transition that matter.
- Set the baseline profile and controller layout before entering the fog.
- Observe the opening weapon form while circling at medium distance; this exposes camera and frame-time problems without requiring an immediate attack.
- Continue through the weapon change and the transition to the second phase. Watch for repeated hitching during particles, lightning, or wide camera pans.
- Repeat the same route after each single graphics change. Keep the setting that produces the most consistent frame time, not the one with the highest menu preset.
- Confirm that dodge, guard, attack, item, and camera inputs register while effects are on screen.
If you cannot reproduce a problem consistently, record whether it occurs only after alt-tab, only when another controller is connected, or only during a particular phase. That distinction points to focus, input configuration, or rendering load rather than a general game-performance issue.
Troubleshooting common problems
Stutter or uneven motion at a nominal 60 FPS
- Return to fullscreen and the display’s native resolution.
- Lower shadows first, then post-processing.
- Close overlays, capture tools, and unnecessary background applications.
- Retest in the boss arena after each change.
- Do not install an FPS unlocker as a first fix; the standard cap avoids compatibility and timing risks.
Image looks soft or shimmers around armor
- Check that the output resolution matches the display’s native mode.
- Test FXAA at its available setting rather than changing several options simultaneously.
- Keep the setting that makes attack silhouettes easiest to read; edge sharpness alone is not the objective.
HDR looks gray, dim, or clipped
- Recheck the display and operating-system HDR calibration.
- Verify that the correct monitor or television is receiving the HDR signal.
- Compare dark armor and bright flame details in the arena.
- Disable HDR if the calibrated SDR image preserves more detail.
Controller is detected but buttons are wrong
- Disconnect duplicate input devices and restart the game.
- Use a wired or XInput-compatible pad for a clean baseline.
- Enable Steam Input only when needed, beginning with the official template.
- Test every combat command in a safe area before attempting the boss again.
Camera feels too fast or too slow
Return to the default sensitivity, then make one small adjustment. No single sensitivity value is established as best for this fight, and your stick hardware, grip, display distance, and comfort determine the useful range. Judge the change by whether you can keep the boss centered during a complete attack sequence.
Quick Recap
Steam Deck cap will not hold
- Confirm that refresh rate and frame limit match: 40/40 on LCD or 45/45 on OLED as the starting configurations.
- Check the second phase, not only the opening.
- Reduce shadows, then post-processing.
- If the chosen cap still misses repeatedly, choose the lower stable target rather than allowing constant oscillation.
Choosing between image quality, latency, and convenience
| Priority | Best approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Most consistent boss timing | Use the normal 60 FPS cap on PC, or a refresh-matched 40/40 LCD or 45/45 OLED Deck profile. | A lower Deck target sacrifices some motion fluidity compared with a true 60 FPS lock. |
| Highest image quality without risking pacing | Keep native resolution and High settings, reducing shadows and post-processing only when testing shows a problem. | Some systems may need a mixed preset to avoid spikes. |
| Lowest setup complexity | Default controller layout, no unnecessary Steam Input layer, and the platform’s stable performance mode. | Fewer custom shortcuts or accessibility remaps. |
| Accessibility or unusual hardware | Use Steam Input to make a specific, documented remap and verify it in-game. | An extra translation layer can complicate diagnosis if another device is also active. |
| Best HDR presentation | Enable HDR only after display calibration and a direct arena check. | Incorrect calibration can reduce readability; there is no universal calibration number. |
