Best Graphics and Control Settings for GTA Vice City Definitive Edition

The best setup depends on your hardware and priorities: use a stable frame-rate target, start at your display’s native resolution, enable NVIDIA DLSS on a supported PC, and choose performance-oriented graphics on PS5 or Xbox Series X when responsive driving and aiming matter most. Use modern controls first; switch to classic controls only if you specifically want the original feel.

What the Definitive Edition changes

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition updates the 2002 game rather than simply emulating it. Rockstar describes the trilogy package as having high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and weather, longer draw distances, and Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting. Those changes affect both image quality and how driving, aiming and camera movement feel.

The visual upgrades also increase the workload on a GPU or console. A higher-resolution texture does not automatically make the game look better if the frame rate becomes inconsistent, so the practical goal is a presentation that remains smooth during driving, combat and fast camera turns. There is no single setting combination that is best for every display or platform.

Choose a target before changing individual options

Decide what you want the game to prioritize, then adjust settings toward that goal. A stable frame rate usually feels better than a fluctuating one with slightly sharper reflections or a longer view distance.

#1 Best Overall
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy (The Definitive Edition) - For Nintendo Switch
  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
  • Responsive play: prioritize consistent frame pacing for driving, aiming and camera control.
  • Image detail: keep the highest practical resolution and visual quality, accepting a less aggressive frame-rate target where the platform allows that choice.
  • Portable play: favor a readable image and comfortable controls over maximum effects, especially on a smaller screen.

On PC, set the target in your graphics driver or in-game frame-rate option if the current build provides one. On consoles, use the performance- or fidelity-oriented option shown by your current title update; labels and behavior can vary by platform and update, so rely on the wording displayed in the game rather than an older screenshot or guide.

Best PC graphics settings

1. Confirm requirements and update first

Before tuning, verify that the computer meets Rockstar’s published PC requirements. A system below the official baseline can exhibit stutter or unstable frame times even after quality settings are reduced. Install the current game update before diagnosing performance; Rockstar’s update history includes cross-platform performance work and later stability changes.

Close overlays and background applications that compete for CPU time, GPU memory or disk access. If the game is installed on a drive that is nearly full, free space before troubleshooting streaming-related hitching. These checks establish a reliable baseline and prevent you from compensating for a system problem with unnecessarily low image quality.

2. Start with native resolution

Set the game to your monitor’s native resolution first. Native output keeps text, distant geometry and interface elements clear, and it gives you a useful reference for judging later changes. If the GPU cannot maintain your chosen frame-rate target, use resolution scaling or DLSS before dropping every quality option at once.

DLSS is a documented PC feature for the Definitive Edition when an NVIDIA GPU and compatible driver support it. Begin with the quality-oriented DLSS option, then move to a more performance-oriented preset only if the frame rate remains below target. Inspect thin objects, signs and distant edges after each change; temporal upscaling can trade some fine detail for speed.

3. Adjust the expensive settings in the right order

When performance is inadequate, change one group at a time and test the same activity—for example, driving through a dense area and turning the camera quickly. This makes it easier to identify whether the limitation is GPU load, CPU load or frame pacing.

  1. Set a stable frame-rate target. A consistent target is preferable to allowing the frame rate to swing widely. If your display supports variable refresh, enable it and use a cap that your system can sustain.
  2. Enable DLSS when supported. Start at the quality preset. Check image stability in motion before selecting a faster preset.
  3. Lower costly effects. Reduce lighting, shadows, reflections or other effect-quality controls that are available in your build. These options generally cost more GPU time than texture quality.
  4. Reduce draw distance next. Draw distance affects how far geometry and objects are rendered. Lowering it can improve performance, but distant scenery will appear or change detail sooner.
  5. Keep textures high when video memory allows. Texture quality mainly affects memory use and surface detail. If you have adequate VRAM and no texture streaming warnings, lowering textures is often a poorer first trade than reducing effects.
  6. Re-test frame pacing. Look for regular delivery of frames rather than only a high instantaneous FPS number. A game that reports a high average but hitches during turns will still feel uneven.

These are practical tuning priorities, not a new benchmark. Actual results vary with GPU model, processor, memory, driver version, resolution and the current game build.

4. A useful PC starting profile

Situation Starting point Why
Modern gaming PC with an NVIDIA GPU Native resolution, quality DLSS, high textures, moderate effects, stable frame-rate cap Preserves surface detail while using upscaling to create headroom
GPU-limited system Native resolution or a modest scale reduction, lower effects first, then draw distance Targets the settings most likely to reduce rendering load
VRAM-constrained system Keep the frame-rate target, lower textures if streaming or memory warnings occur Reduces memory pressure that can cause texture pop-in or hitching
CPU- or streaming-limited system Keep resolution and textures where possible; reduce draw distance and background load Reduces the amount of world data the processor must prepare

Do not apply every low preset automatically. A preset may lower textures, effects and view distance together, producing a softer image than necessary. Manual changes preserve the features that matter most to you.

PS5 and Xbox Series X: performance or fidelity?

Rockstar’s product materials describe PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X support for up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS. “Up to” is important: it describes the platform capability and advertised ceiling, not a guarantee that every scene will remain at that figure or that every mode uses the same resolution.

Choose performance-oriented graphics when control response matters

Use the performance-oriented mode for frequent driving, shooting and fast camera movement. The lower rendering burden gives the system more opportunity to maintain responsive frame delivery. This is the better starting point for players who notice input delay or judder before they notice small differences in lighting and distant detail.

Choose fidelity-oriented graphics for maximum detail

Use the fidelity-oriented mode when you play from a comfortable distance, value denser lighting and environmental detail, and are willing to accept a less aggressive frame-rate target. Fidelity mode can be preferable for sightseeing, screenshots or a slower campaign pace.

Verify the labels on your build

Mode names and exact behavior can change with title updates and platform interfaces. Open the game’s graphics or display menu and read the current labels. If no mode selector appears, the title update or console version may be managing resolution and frame rate automatically.

PlayStation 4, Xbox One and less powerful hardware

On older consoles, prioritize a stable presentation and legible image over maximum effects. Start with the default display mode after updating, then reduce any expensive visual options the menu exposes. Keep camera and aim sensitivity at a level you can control; a low frame rate can make high sensitivity feel especially erratic.

Do not judge performance from one busy scene alone. Test a repeatable route that includes driving, a turn through a crowded area and a short aiming sequence. If the game remains uneven after an update and sensible reductions, the platform may simply be operating near its limit. Further lowering image quality cannot create the same headroom available on newer hardware.

Nintendo Switch settings and controls

The Switch version adds gyro aiming and touch-screen interactions for the camera and menus. These features are useful options rather than requirements.

Gyro aiming

Enable gyro aiming if small controller movements help you make precise corrections. Begin with moderate sensitivity and adjust in small steps. Excessive sensitivity can make driving-camera corrections and weapon tracking feel nervous; too little sensitivity forces large wrist movements.

Touch controls

Use the touch screen for camera or menu interactions when the console is in handheld mode. If you switch between handheld and docked play, recheck your preferred input method because a control scheme that feels natural on the screen may be less convenient with a television and controller.

Visual priority

Favor a stable, comfortable presentation instead of aggressive visual settings. The smaller handheld display can hide some distant-detail differences, while inconsistent frame delivery remains noticeable during movement. Keep camera and aim sensitivity moderate until you have tested both handheld and docked play.

Modern versus classic controls

Modern controls: the best default

Modern controls use the GTA V-style control and targeting redesign that Rockstar added to the Definitive Edition. They are the best starting point for new players and for returning players who want contemporary aiming and driving input. The layout is designed around current expectations for camera control, target selection and vehicle handling.

Classic controls: when they make sense

Classic controls are a preference option for players seeking the original game’s feel. Choose them when muscle memory from the 2002 release is more valuable than the modern layout, or when a specific action feels more intuitive in the older scheme. There is no performance advantage to either control style.

How to tune sensitivity

  1. Play a short route that combines walking, aiming and driving.
  2. Adjust look sensitivity first, using small increments.
  3. Adjust aim sensitivity separately; keep it lower if the reticle overshoots targets.
  4. Test vehicle camera movement after changing on-foot settings.
  5. Save the profile only after checking both ordinary movement and combat.

On PC, use the input method that gives you the most reliable camera control. Mouse and keyboard can provide precise aiming, while a controller may make analog driving smoother. Remap only the actions that conflict with your hand position; changing the entire layout makes troubleshooting harder.

How to stop stutter on PC

Stutter is inconsistent frame delivery, not simply a low average FPS. Follow this order so each change answers a specific question.

  1. Update the game. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.04 notes documented performance improvements across platforms and graphics modes, and the support hub lists a later 1.112 stability update. Install the current update available for your platform before changing advanced settings.
  2. Check the official PC requirements. If the processor, GPU or memory is below the published baseline, reduce expectations before pursuing fine-grained tweaks.
  3. Establish a frame-rate cap. Pick a target the system can sustain in demanding scenes. An uncapped rate that repeatedly falls from a high number can feel worse than a lower, steady cap.
  4. Identify the bottleneck. High GPU utilization points toward resolution, DLSS and effects; a busy CPU with lower GPU utilization points toward draw distance, background programs or simulation load; hitching with neither fully loaded can indicate streaming or frame-pacing issues.
  5. Change resolution scaling or DLSS. Test one change at a time and inspect distant edges, signs and thin geometry for unwanted softness or shimmer.
  6. Lower expensive effects. Reduce lighting, shadows and reflections before sacrificing texture quality.
  7. Lower draw distance. Use this only after testing effects, because it changes how far world detail remains visible.
  8. Retest input response. Uneven frame pacing can make aiming feel delayed or inconsistent. Recheck sensitivity after the graphics changes so you do not mistake a timing problem for a control-layout problem.

If stutter appears only when entering new areas, monitor whether the pattern repeats at the same locations. If it occurs continuously during camera movement, compare a lower effect preset and a lower resolution scale. Keep a note of each change so you can return to the last stable configuration.

Which platform runs Vice City Definitive Edition best?

“Best” depends on the feature you value. The comparison below uses capabilities documented by Rockstar rather than an invented ranking of image quality or average FPS.

Platform Documented capability or feature Best fit
PlayStation 5 Up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS; performance- and fidelity-oriented choices may be presented by the current build Players who want a modern console experience with a choice between responsiveness and detail
Xbox Series X Up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS; current build determines the exact graphics-mode labels Players prioritizing high-resolution console output and a stable target
PC Configurable resolution and effects; NVIDIA DLSS is supported on compatible hardware Players who want the most control over scaling, frame-rate caps and input devices
PlayStation 4 Older-console hardware with fewer performance options than current-generation systems Players who already own the platform and value access over maximum settings
Xbox One Older-console hardware; update before troubleshooting performance Players using the Xbox One family without a newer console
Nintendo Switch Portable play, gyro aiming and touch-screen camera/menu interactions Players who value handheld access and motion-assisted aiming

Physical editions were released for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, so buying a platform-specific physical copy is a legitimate way to choose the version that fits your hardware. Availability of a particular package can vary by region and retailer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing a headline number: “4K/60” is an advertised ceiling for PS5 and Xbox Series X, not proof that every scene is locked at both values.
  • Changing everything at once: You lose the ability to identify whether resolution, effects, draw distance or input timing caused the improvement.
  • Dropping textures first: Textures often improve surface detail more visibly than they improve frame rate when VRAM is sufficient.
  • Using old menu screenshots: Updates can change labels and available options. Read the controls and graphics menu on the installed build.
  • Ignoring updates: Rockstar has shipped performance and stability fixes across platforms, so troubleshooting an outdated installation can produce misleading results.
  • Blaming controls for frame pacing: Uneven delivery can make aiming feel sluggish even when the layout is correct.
  • Assuming portability and quality are the same goal: Switch’s advantage is handheld flexibility plus gyro and touch features, not matching the highest-resolution console output.

A quick setup checklist

  • Install the latest available title update.
  • On PC, confirm Rockstar’s published requirements and update graphics drivers.
  • Set native display resolution before experimenting with scaling.
  • Choose a frame-rate target your system can sustain.
  • Enable quality DLSS on a compatible NVIDIA GPU, then test a faster preset only if needed.
  • Lower effects before draw distance, and lower draw distance before textures when VRAM is adequate.
  • On PS5 or Xbox Series X, select performance for responsiveness or fidelity for detail, using the labels shown by your current build.
  • On Switch, test gyro aiming and touch interactions, starting with moderate sensitivity.
  • Start with modern controls and move to classic controls only for a deliberate preference.
  • After graphics changes, retest aiming and camera response rather than assuming the controls changed.

Bottom line

For most players, the strongest starting setup is modern controls, a stable frame-rate target and graphics quality adjusted only as far as necessary to maintain consistent frame delivery. On a capable PC, use native resolution with quality DLSS when available, keep textures high if VRAM permits, and reduce effects before draw distance. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, performance mode is the safer choice for responsive play, while fidelity mode suits players who put image detail first. Switch owners should treat gyro and touch input as optional advantages and tune them gradually. Updates matter on every platform, so apply them before judging the game’s performance.
