Rustmourne is not released yet: its Steam listing shows a to-be-announced release date, says the game is unavailable, and marks PC requirements as work in progress. That means there is no verified Rustmourne preset or tested performance profile. The safest approach is a PCVR baseline built around sustainable frame timing, then adjusted after the game exposes its own options.

Start at 72, 80, or 90 Hz, use roughly 100% render scale, and measure CPU and GPU frame time before changing anything else. If the GPU misses its budget, lower render resolution and the most expensive effects first. If resolution changes do little, work on CPU-heavy settings such as view distance, simulation, physics, or crowds. For comfort, begin with teleport movement, snap turning, and a vignette if equivalent controls appear in Rustmourne.

What is known about Rustmourne VR support

Rustmourne is described on Steam as a VR-only science-fiction survival-horror game from Rustmourne Team. The current listing names SteamVR support for Valve Index and the Meta Quest family, but it does not publish a final hardware requirement, graphics preset, menu screenshot, or performance target. Its release date remains “To be announced,” and the PC requirements are explicitly work in progress.

Those qualifications matter when choosing settings. The recommendations below are a repeatable starting workflow for the eventual PCVR build, not claims about labels or sliders that have already been confirmed in Rustmourne. Menu names, available effects, and headset support can change before release. Use the closest equivalent control when the game ships.

Set a frame-time target before chasing image quality

In VR, the headset refresh mode sets a native frame-time budget. Your computer must produce each frame inside that window to avoid missed frames and the uneven motion that can feel worse in a headset than on a monitor. A high frame-rate number is not automatically better if frame delivery is inconsistent.

Refresh mode Approximate time per native frame Practical use
72 Hz 13.9 ms Most forgiving starting point for demanding scenes or older GPUs
80 Hz 12.5 ms Useful middle ground when 90 Hz is not consistently achievable
90 Hz 11.1 ms Good baseline when the system can sustain it through heavy scenes
120 Hz 8.3 ms Requires substantially more headroom; do not select it merely for the headline number
144 Hz 6.9 ms Very demanding and generally unsuitable as a first target for an unreleased game

Choose the lowest mode that remains smooth during demanding sections, rapid head turns, and a long session. A stable 80 or 90 Hz target can feel better than an unstable 120 Hz target because it leaves the renderer more time per frame. Recheck the choice after every major graphics change.

A practical first target

For a first launch, select 72, 80, or 90 Hz according to the headroom of your PC and headset. Keep the target fixed while tuning. Changing refresh rate and several quality settings at the same time makes it impossible to tell which change solved a hitch or introduced one.

Build a clean Rustmourne baseline

  1. Confirm the runtime. Launch through SteamVR with a supported Valve Index or Meta Quest-family headset. Treat the Steam hardware information as compatibility scope, not as a promise of a particular frame rate.
  2. Choose one refresh mode. Start at 72, 80, or 90 Hz. Record the mode so every later comparison uses the same frame-time budget.
  3. Set render scale near 100%. Use 100% or 1.0x in the headset or runtime as the initial value. Do not stack an aggressive headset resolution, SteamVR resolution, streaming resolution, and in-game scale before you have measured the result.
  4. Use a performance overlay. Select an overlay that reports CPU and GPU frame time, not just an average FPS counter. Watch it while standing still, turning your head, moving through complex geometry, and visiting the most populated or effects-heavy area available.
  5. Change one variable. Apply one adjustment, repeat the same demanding route, and keep it only if the frame-time result improves without an unacceptable loss of clarity or comfort.
  6. Save a known-good profile. Once the game is stable, note the refresh rate, render scale, effect settings, runtime resolution, and connection type. This gives you a recovery point after a driver or game update.

How to tell whether the GPU or CPU is the limit

GPU and CPU bottlenecks respond to different controls. Lowering every quality slider is inefficient if the wrong processor is saturated.

GPU-bound symptoms and fixes

You are probably GPU-bound when GPU frame time is above the selected budget, GPU utilization is high, and lowering resolution produces a clear improvement. Reduce pixel work first, then target effects that are expensive to render:

  • Lower headset or runtime render scale in small steps, such as 100% to 90%, rather than making several large changes at once.
  • Disable or lower ray tracing if Rustmourne offers it. Ray-traced reflections and lighting can consume a large portion of the GPU budget.
  • Reduce volumetric fog, smoke, lighting shafts, or other volumetric effects.
  • Lower shadow quality or shadow distance after testing resolution.
  • Reduce reflection quality or reflection distance.
  • Lower post-processing effects such as ambient effects, depth of field, or screen-space treatments if they are exposed.

Test image stability in dark corridors and high-contrast scenes, not only in a bright room. A small reduction in render scale may be less distracting than shimmer from a poorly performing upscaler or a large drop in shadow quality.

CPU-bound symptoms and fixes

A CPU limit is more likely when GPU utilization is low, lowering render scale barely changes frame time, and performance worsens around simulation, physics, crowds, or long sight lines. In that case:

  • Lower view distance, object distance, or world-detail distance.
  • Reduce simulation, physics, destruction, or animation-update quality when an equivalent option exists.
  • Lower crowd, character, or AI density.
  • Close heavy background applications, browser tabs, recording tools, and overlays that compete for CPU time.
  • Check for a single busy CPU thread rather than relying only on overall CPU percentage; VR games can stall when one game thread is full while total utilization looks moderate.

Do not keep lowering resolution when these tests show a CPU limit. It can make the image softer without fixing the hitch.

Resolution, scaling and upscaling without confusion

PCVR can apply resolution at several layers: the headset’s native target, the SteamVR or runtime resolution, a wireless encoder’s stream resolution, and an in-game render scale. Their effects can multiply. Begin with one layer at approximately 100% and leave the others at known defaults while you establish a baseline.

Recommended order of operations

  1. Set the headset or runtime resolution to its default 100% or 1.0x value.
  2. Set any Rustmourne render-scale control to approximately 100%.
  3. Run the same route and record CPU and GPU frame times.
  4. If GPU-bound, lower one resolution layer by a modest amount and test again.
  5. Only after stability is established, experiment with the game’s upscaler or sharpening control.

Upscaling can return performance by rendering internally below the display target, but it may introduce shimmer, ghosting, or a softer image. Judge it while moving your head and reading small text, not from a still screenshot. Keep the setting that provides the best balance of frame time and stable detail in the actual headset.

When reprojection or motion smoothing helps

Reprojection generates or reuses additional displayed frames when the PC cannot render every native frame. In a 90 Hz example, a runtime may render 45 frames and supplement them to reach the display cadence. This can prevent a complete collapse in perceived smoothness, but it is not free: artifacts, extra input delay, and judder can appear when the runtime switches between native and reprojected modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use reprojection or SteamVR Motion Smoothing as a deliberate fallback, not as the first graphics setting you change. First select a sustainable refresh mode, establish a sensible render scale, and reduce the effects responsible for the GPU or CPU limit. Then test the runtime’s motion-smoothing behavior in the headset while turning, moving laterally, and passing close to geometry. If artifacts or latency are distracting, return to a lower refresh target or lower native settings instead.

Suggested graphics profiles for different headroom

These are starting profiles, not Rustmourne presets. Adapt them to the controls present in the released build.

Profile Refresh target Render scale Effects approach Who should try it
Stability first 72 or 80 Hz 90–100% Ray tracing off; volumetrics, shadows, reflections, and post-processing low to medium Systems that miss 90 Hz or show frequent spikes
Balanced 80 or 90 Hz 100% Use medium effects; raise shadows or reflections only after frame time is steady Most systems with moderate headroom
Clarity focused 90 Hz 100% or slightly above if measured headroom remains Increase one GPU-heavy effect at a time; retain a stable frame-time margin Fast GPUs that remain under budget in demanding scenes
High-refresh experiment 120 or 144 Hz Start at 100% Use conservative effects and accept that a lower mode may be smoother Only systems that sustain the tighter 8.3 ms or 6.9 ms budgets

Do not interpret “balanced” or “clarity focused” as guaranteed outcomes. Rustmourne’s final optimization and menu structure are not published, so the measured frame time in your own headset is the deciding test.

Quest PCVR: diagnose wired and wireless paths separately

Quest users have two distinct transport pipelines. A wireless connection adds network and video-encoding variables; wired Link removes Wi-Fi variability but still depends on the cable, encoder, USB path, and headset render resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless PCVR checklist

  • Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi.
  • Use a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection where the headset and router support it, with the headset in the same room when possible.
  • Change bitrate gradually. A higher bitrate can improve compression detail, but stop increasing it when latency becomes unstable or stutters appear.
  • Separate network symptoms from rendering symptoms: a network spike can look like a graphics hitch even when CPU and GPU frame times are inside budget.
  • Keep other high-bandwidth traffic off the same wireless link while testing.

Wired Link checklist

  • Use a USB-C 3.2 cable rated for at least 5 Gbps, matching current Link guidance cited by PCVR Central.
  • Run the runtime’s USB connection test and verify that it reports a high-quality connection.
  • Check encoder settings and headset render resolution separately from Rustmourne’s in-game scale.
  • Move the cable through a strain-relieved route so head movement does not loosen the connector.
  • If wired play is smooth but wireless play stutters, investigate the network and encoder before reducing game quality.

Neither connection method guarantees a particular frame rate. A wired link can still be GPU-bound, and a fast wireless network cannot compensate for a PC that misses its render-time budget.

Comfort settings for movement and horror gameplay

When Rustmourne exposes equivalent controls, start with teleport or another discontinuous movement mode, snap turning, and a movement vignette. This combination limits the visual motion that commonly makes a new VR player uncomfortable while preserving a way to explore the environment.

Movement starting point

  1. Choose teleport movement instead of continuous locomotion for the first session.
  2. Enable snap turning and select a moderate snap angle.
  3. Enable the vignette, which narrows the field of view during movement if the game provides that option.
  4. Use a seated or standing position that keeps the headset stable and allows a clear play area.
  5. Play a short test session. Stop if nausea, headache, eye strain, sweating, or disorientation begins.

Exact Rustmourne labels and slider ranges have not been published, so do not assume that a setting called “comfort vignette,” “snap angle,” or “smooth locomotion” will use the same name or values in the final game.

Progressing to smooth movement

After teleport and snap turning feel comfortable, increase smooth movement speed or reduce the vignette gradually, one change per session. Keep the snap-turn option available even if you prefer smooth rotation for exploration. Increase the field of view only after the existing combination is comfortable; a wider view can make artificial movement feel more intense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame pacing is part of comfort. Stutters and inconsistent timing can produce discomfort even when movement settings are conservative. Fix missed frames at the chosen refresh target before raising resolution or effects.

What to change first when Rustmourne stutters

Stutter appears everywhere, including menus or simple rooms

  • Confirm that the headset is running at the refresh mode you selected.
  • Watch CPU and GPU frame-time graphs for spikes.
  • Close recording software, browser tabs, and unnecessary overlays.
  • Return render scale to 100% and disable experimental upscaling or motion smoothing while diagnosing.

Stutter appears only during effects-heavy scenes

  • Lower render scale if GPU frame time is over budget.
  • Disable ray tracing, then reduce volumetrics, shadows, reflections, and post-processing in that order.
  • Retest the same scene and head-turn pattern.

Stutter appears around crowds, physics, or long views

  • Check whether GPU utilization remains low while CPU frame time rises.
  • Lower view distance, simulation, physics, crowd, or AI-related settings.
  • Close CPU-heavy background applications and repeat the route.

Only wireless play stutters

  • Use Ethernet from the PC to the router.
  • Move to a stronger 5 GHz or 6 GHz signal.
  • Reduce bitrate until latency is stable.
  • Compare with a verified wired Link session before changing Rustmourne’s graphics.

Only wired play stutters

  • Run the USB connection test.
  • Try another USB port and confirm that the cable maintains a 5 Gbps-class connection.
  • Check encoder load and headset resolution.
  • After the connection is confirmed, return to the GPU-versus-CPU tests above.

How to tune safely after the baseline works

  1. Keep the refresh mode fixed.
  2. Raise exactly one option, such as shadows from low to medium.
  3. Test a demanding route, rapid head turns, and at least several minutes of play.
  4. Record whether frame time, shimmer, latency, or comfort changed.
  5. Revert the option if it creates spikes, then test the next option.

Prioritize settings by the result you want. Render scale usually changes clarity and GPU cost together. Shadows, volumetrics, reflections, and ray tracing can add atmosphere but consume GPU headroom. View distance, simulation, physics, and crowds tend to affect CPU time. Keep enough margin for a new room or encounter; a profile that is exactly at the frame-time limit in an empty corridor can fail as soon as the game becomes busy.

What is not yet possible to state about Rustmourne

No public source currently establishes a Rustmourne-specific “ultra,” “high,” or “comfort” preset, a tested combination for a particular GPU, or exact menu labels and ranges. The Steam requirements are still marked work in progress, and the game is not available for a reproducible public benchmark. Any article claiming a guaranteed frame rate, a definitive best headset, or a confirmed Rustmourne slider value would be going beyond the available evidence.

Use the release build’s own telemetry and your headset’s frame-time overlay to replace these provisional baselines. Keep the first configuration that remains smooth in the hardest scene you can reach, not the one that produces the highest average FPS in a quiet area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick reference checklist

  • Choose 72, 80, or 90 Hz before tuning quality.
  • Remember the approximate budgets: 13.9 ms at 72 Hz, 12.5 ms at 80 Hz, and 11.1 ms at 90 Hz.
  • Start near 100% render scale and avoid stacking multiple resolution multipliers.
  • Use CPU and GPU frame-time data rather than FPS alone.
  • For GPU limits, lower resolution, ray tracing, volumetrics, shadows, reflections, and post-processing.
  • For CPU limits, lower view distance, simulation, physics, crowds, or equivalent settings.
  • Use teleport, snap turning, and a vignette as the initial comfort combination.
  • For wireless Quest play, use Ethernet to the router and a strong 5 or 6 GHz link.
  • For wired Quest Link, verify a USB-C 3.2 cable and at least 5 Gbps connection quality.
  • Add visual quality one setting at a time after the demanding scenes remain stable.
