Start with the recommended or default preset at your display’s native resolution, then protect frame pacing before chasing higher detail. Keep textures and shadow detail at their default levels while camera movement remains smooth. If motion becomes uneven, lower the most expensive effects first, and only then reduce resolution. For comfort, disable motion blur and camera shake if those controls are present, use the widest natural field of view, lower look sensitivity in small steps, enable subtitles, and reduce sharp audio peaks when the game provides those options.
Those are prudent starting points rather than a list of confirmed Lingering Shadow menu values. The game is still listed as coming soon on Steam, and the free Windows demo reported in October 2026 is a separate prerelease build. Its final graphics, accessibility menu, system requirements, release date and performance targets have not been published publicly.

What Lingering Shadow is, and what is currently confirmed
Lingering Shadow is described on its Steam store page as “a psychological horror puzzle game set in a dreamy early-2000s small town.” Its visual idea is deliberately imperfect: warm memories flicker “like low-resolution footage on a dusty camcorder.” The fear is meant to come from subtle distortion, environmental details and unreliable memories rather than a constant stream of jump scares.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat design matters when you tune the game. Aggressively sharpening every image, raising contrast until blacks crush, or adding unnecessary camera movement can make the experience harsher without making the intended dreamcore atmosphere clearer. Conversely, lowering every quality option can make dark clues and small environmental changes harder to read. The useful goal is a stable, legible image that preserves the game’s softness.

The complete game is not yet available on Steam. A free Windows demo was reported in October 2026, but it should be treated as a prerelease application rather than proof of the final PC feature set. No authoritative Lingering Shadow benchmark, frame-rate target, player-count figure or final hardware requirement has been published for this settings question.
The best starting preset
Use this order before changing individual options:
- Set Windows and the game to your monitor’s native resolution and normal refresh rate.
- Choose the game’s Default, Recommended or equivalent preset, if the demo offers one.
- Play for several minutes in a scene with walking, turning and dark interiors. Judge whether camera motion is even, not whether a counter reaches a particular number.
- Keep textures and shadow detail at the preset level if frame pacing is consistent. These settings preserve surface detail and the shape of shadows that help sell the town’s memory distortions.
- If movement feels jerky, lower expensive effects one category at a time. Apply the change, revisit the same type of scene and stop as soon as motion is stable.
- Reduce resolution only when effect reductions are insufficient. A lower internal resolution can improve consistency, but it also makes distant clues and text less distinct.
Because the public information does not list the demo’s exact labels or presets, do not assume that an option called “cinematic,” “quality” or “performance” has a particular internal resolution. Read the description beside each option in your build and change one variable at a time.
Graphics settings: what to keep and what to lower
| Setting or group | Comfort-first starting choice | Why it matters | Change it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | Native resolution | Keeps text, puzzle clues and fine environmental changes clear. | Lower it only after reducing costly effects fails to produce even motion. |
| Textures | Default or recommended level | Preserves surface detail without usually changing camera movement by itself. | Lower it if the system runs out of graphics memory or the build stutters while new areas load. |
| Shadow detail | Default or recommended level | Shadows are part of the readable shape and mood of a small, dim town. | Lower it if turning toward lit areas or shadow-heavy scenes causes uneven pacing. |
| Expensive effects | Preset value initially | Effects can consume performance while adding less puzzle information than textures or basic lighting. | Lower these before resolution when motion becomes uneven; use the names and descriptions actually shown by the demo. |
| Motion blur | Off, if available | Blur during camera turns can make a soft, low-resolution visual style feel physically uncomfortable. | Leave it off if you notice eye strain, smearing or difficulty tracking objects. |
| Camera shake or secondary movement | Off or the lowest value, if available | Extra movement can turn a slow exploration game into a discomfort trigger. | Disable it when walking, impacts or scripted moments make your view lurch. |
| Field of view | Widest value that still looks natural | A slightly wider view can reduce the sensation of tunnel vision during movement. | Reduce it if the edges warp, objects look stretched or a wide view itself causes discomfort. |
| Sharpening, grain or color controls | Leave at the preset value until you know what each control does | These can change the intended camcorder-like softness and dark-scene readability. | Adjust only when the image is visibly smeared, excessively noisy or too dark to read. |
“Keep” does not mean “always use High.” It means that a stable default image is a better baseline than a speculative high-quality configuration. The demo’s final option names and numerical levels are not publicly verified, so a table of invented Low, Medium and Ultra values would be misleading.

How to tune frame pacing without losing the dreamcore look
Frame pacing is the regularity of frame delivery. A game can show a high instantaneous frame-rate number and still feel uncomfortable if frames arrive in bursts. In a psychological horror game that relies on slow turns, distant silhouettes and tiny environmental changes, uneven motion is often more distracting than a lower but consistent output.
Use a repeatable test
- Load the same demo area and perform the same actions: walk forward, rotate slowly through a full turn, open a puzzle space and enter a darker room.
- Watch for hitching when a new area appears, repeated judder during turns, or a sudden loss of smoothness near lights and shadows.
- Change one setting, return to the same route and compare. Record the setting that changed and whether the hitching improved.
- Keep the lowest change that restores consistent movement. Raising another option is worthwhile only if the route remains smooth.
Lower effects before resolution
If the game exposes several effect controls, reduce the ones that describe lighting, volumetric treatment, reflections or post-processing before sacrificing output resolution. This is a decision rule, not a claim that every one of those controls exists in the demo. Use the in-game descriptions and avoid changing multiple categories at once, because you will not know which change solved the problem.
When resolution is the right trade-off
Drop resolution when the build remains uneven after effect reductions or when the system is clearly constrained by its graphics hardware. Check subtitles, puzzle text and distant objects after the change. If they become difficult to read, restore the previous resolution and make a smaller effect reduction instead. The best setting is the one that leaves both movement and clues usable.

Comfort settings for dizziness, eye strain and sensory overload
Motion blur
Turn motion blur off when the control exists. Blur is applied as the camera or objects move, so it can compound the game’s intentionally degraded, camcorder-like presentation. Players who do not feel discomfort may prefer the cinematic effect, but there is no benefit in keeping it enabled when turns look smeared or your eyes struggle to refocus.
Camera shake and secondary movement
Disable camera shake, head bob or similar secondary movement if the demo provides sliders or toggles for them. These effects are separate from ordinary mouse or stick input; reducing them preserves the ability to look around while removing movement that the player did not request. If there is only one camera-movement control, choose its lowest setting and test a walking route before lowering sensitivity further.
Field of view
Begin at the widest field of view that still appears natural. A narrow view can make movement feel like looking through a tube, while an excessively wide view can bend the edges of the image and create its own discomfort. Increase or decrease the value gradually, walk for several minutes and keep the first setting that feels stable rather than the largest number available.

Look sensitivity
Change sensitivity in small steps. If the camera overshoots when you try to inspect a clue, lower sensitivity; if you are making repeated corrective movements, raise it slightly. Sensitivity and field of view interact: a wider view can make the same mouse movement appear faster at the edges, so retest sensitivity after changing FOV.
Subtitles and audio peaks
Enable subtitles when available. They keep spoken information and puzzle context readable when you need to lower volume or when a scene contains competing sounds. If the demo includes a dynamic-range, loudness or peak-volume control, reduce sharp peaks rather than muting the entire mix. Horror audio often uses sudden contrasts; lowering peaks can make those transitions less startling while preserving environmental sound.

Best Value
A practical setup procedure in the Windows demo
The following workflow avoids assuming a menu layout that may change between builds:
- Start the demo and open the menu labelled Options, Settings or a similar control shown by your build.
- In the display or graphics page, select native resolution and the intended display mode. Note the current preset before editing individual values.
- Apply the Recommended or Default preset if one is available. Restart only if the demo asks you to; some changes apply immediately and others require a reload.
- Find camera or accessibility controls. Switch motion blur and camera shake off when present, then set subtitles on.
- Set FOV to a natural wide view and reduce look sensitivity slightly if the first camera turn feels fast. Do not make a large change before testing.
- Play a repeatable route containing both outdoor and dark indoor areas. Check smoothness, text readability, shadow detail and physical comfort.
- If movement is uneven, return to graphics and lower one expensive effect. Test again. Continue in small steps before touching resolution.
- If the image becomes too soft or clues are hard to read, restore the last change and try a different effect. Keep a short note of the values that work for your system.
- Stop playing if you develop dizziness, nausea, headache or eye pain. Fresh air and a break are more useful than another graphics adjustment.
Choosing between quality and performance priorities
| Priority | Choose this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere and detail | Your system already delivers even camera movement at the recommended preset. | Higher shadows or effects may preserve mood but can expose stutter in demanding scenes. |
| Clue readability | You need to inspect small objects, text or distant environmental changes. | Keep native resolution and textures; lower another effect first. |
| Motion comfort | Turns feel uneven or you are sensitive to judder. | Reduce costly effects and accept less visual treatment before lowering resolution. |
| Sensory comfort | Blur, shake or loud peaks cause symptoms. | Disable or reduce those effects even if the resulting presentation is less cinematic. |
There is no published Lingering Shadow performance target that makes one row universally correct. Match the priority to your symptoms and hardware, then verify the result in the actual scenes where you play.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game looks smooth but I feel dizzy
- Turn motion blur off.
- Disable camera shake, head bob or other secondary movement.
- Try a slightly wider FOV, then retest with lower sensitivity.
- Use subtitles and reduce sharp audio peaks if available so you do not need to compensate by staring harder or turning volume down abruptly.
- Take a break as soon as symptoms appear; do not continue to “push through” discomfort.
The picture is dark and I cannot read clues
- Restore native resolution if you lowered it.
- Keep textures and shadow detail at the recommended level when performance permits.
- Check whether the display itself is using an extreme contrast, black-level or HDR mode; change only settings you understand and can restore.
- Do not raise brightness so far that the intended distinction between memory and distortion disappears.
Turning causes stutter
- Repeat the same camera-turn test after each change.
- Lower expensive effects one at a time.
- Keep the preset’s texture level unless loading stutters suggest a graphics-memory limit.
- Lower resolution only if effect reductions do not restore even motion.
I cannot find an option mentioned in a guide
Do not assume the control is hidden or broken. The Windows demo is a prerelease build, and the complete menu has not been published. A guide that gives exact FOV numbers, blur toggles or accessibility labels without showing the build version may be describing a different version or guessing. Use the controls present in your copy and record the build information when reporting a problem.

As of October 2026, the Steam listing marks Lingering Shadow as coming soon rather than released. The free Windows demo reported during that month is separate from the final game. Its existence lets players evaluate performance and comfort on their own hardware, but it does not establish final system requirements, a release date or a guaranteed set of accessibility controls.
Publicly verified information does not include exact FOV ranges, motion-blur or camera-shake labels, color controls, subtitle implementation, dynamic-range settings, final graphics presets or a frame-rate target. Treat any future developer update as the authority for those details, and check whether a stated option applies to the demo or to the final release.
Quick Recap
