What the iOS version supports
The current official compatibility floor is an iPhone 11 or later, or a third-generation iPad Air or later. The iOS edition is a substantial 3D game, so compatibility does not mean every supported model will sustain the same frame rate, image quality, or temperature during long sessions.

The best starting graphics profile
Open the game’s graphics options and begin with the highest preset or frame-rate option that your device can hold without persistent stutter or uncomfortable heat. There is no published device-by-device graphics matrix, measured runtime chart, or complete launch list of sliders, so the correct setting is determined by sustained behavior on your particular model rather than by a universal number.

Do not set every option to its minimum automatically. Reducing one demanding setting at a time lets you identify the setting that matters on your hardware and preserves detail that does not materially affect power use.

Why a stable target beats a higher target
A high frame-rate target can feel excellent for flight, vehicle travel, and rapid camera movement, but only when the device can sustain it. If rendering repeatedly misses the target, you see uneven frame pacing, hitching, and extra work as the device attempts to catch up. A lower, consistent target generally feels better than a nominally higher target that collapses during storms, dense bases, or busy scenes.

Choose 60 fps only when extended play remains smooth and temperatures stay acceptable. Choose 30 fps when 60 fps causes frequent drops, heat, or rapid drain. If the game exposes an intermediate option, use it as a compromise rather than assuming the maximum is best.
Why resolution is usually the second adjustment
Resolution affects how many pixels the graphics processor must shade. Lowering it can reduce load while retaining more visual effects than an across-the-board minimum preset. On a smaller iPhone display, a modest resolution reduction may be difficult to notice during play; on a large iPad, text and distant terrain can look softer. Check menus, cockpit instruments, and horizon detail after each change.
Match the display to the game
Android Developers states: “If the display refresh rate is higher than the target frame rate of the game, there is no benefit from the higher refresh rate, only increased power consumption.” The same principle is useful when evaluating any high-refresh mobile display. If the game is targeting 30 fps, forcing a 120 Hz display mode does not create 120 frames of game simulation. Use the device’s standard or adaptive refresh option when endurance matters, provided it does not interfere with other apps.
Device-specific choices
iPhone 11 through iPhone 14
These models meet the documented compatibility floor, but their sustained performance can vary with battery condition, ambient temperature, storage pressure, and the exact scene being rendered. Start with the balanced profile. Test a demanding location, such as a large base or a planet with heavy weather, for at least several minutes before deciding that a setting is stable.

iPhone 15 Pro and newer
These models meet the requirement for Planetary Settlements. They may offer more headroom for higher visual settings, but the feature requirement is not a promise of a particular frame rate or runtime. Keep the same stability test, especially when using high-refresh display modes or playing in a warm environment.
Third-generation iPad Air and newer
The larger screen makes interface clarity important. Keep resolution high enough that inventory text and navigation markers remain comfortable to read, then reduce frame rate or heavy effects if the tablet warms. A stand can improve airflow around the enclosure, but never block vents or place the iPad in direct sun.
Step-by-step setup on iPhone or iPad
- Update the operating system and game. Install the latest version available for your device, then restart before evaluating performance. This removes update-related background work from your test.
- Start from the default or highest stable preset. Do not change several options at once. Record the frame-rate target, resolution, and any effects controls that are available in your build.
- Use a repeatable test scene. Fly, walk, or drive through the same busy area for several minutes. Include camera movement and an activity that normally causes slowdowns, rather than judging only from a quiet menu.
- Check smoothness and heat together. A setting that looks smooth for two minutes but begins to stutter as the chassis heats is not stable for long sessions.
- Lower the frame-rate target first. If the device is hot or the frame pacing is uneven, move from 60 to 30 fps, or to the next lower option available.
- Reduce resolution or demanding effects second. Make one change, repeat the same scene, and compare text readability, terrain detail, and motion.
- Save the profile that remains comfortable. Your best setting is the one that stays usable after the battery has fallen and the device has warmed, not the one that produces the best first five minutes.
The exact names and number of launch sliders have not been published. If an option described here is absent from your build, use the closest available frame-rate, resolution, or quality control rather than assuming an undocumented equivalent.

How to reduce battery drain
Lower rendering work before sacrificing everything else
When endurance is more important than appearance, lower the frame-rate target first and then resolution or costly effects. This usually preserves a coherent image while reducing the number of frames and pixels the graphics processor must produce. Avoid repeatedly switching between profiles during play; each test period adds heat and makes battery comparisons unreliable.

Reduce display power
Lower screen brightness to the minimum comfortable level and shorten the screen timeout outside the game. Disable unnecessary radios or background activity only when you do not need them, and close apps that are actively consuming battery. These steps reduce system overhead but cannot compensate for a rendering setting that is too demanding.
Use built-in battery controls carefully
Google recommends reducing brightness, shortening screen timeout, restricting high-battery-use apps, enabling Adaptive Battery, and using Battery Saver. Battery Saver can limit background activity and may delay some visual effects, features, network connections, or app activity. Treat it as an endurance mode, not a graphics upgrade, and check whether its restrictions interfere with the way you use the device.
Keep a controller in mind
Hello Games explicitly supports controllers on iOS. A compatible Bluetooth or MFi controller can reduce hand fatigue during long sessions and keep fingers from covering the screen. Pair it before launching the game, verify that every button is recognized, and carry a charging cable or spare batteries if the controller is powered separately.

High CPU and GPU utilization generates heat. As the device approaches its thermal limits, the operating system can reduce clock speeds; this thermal throttling causes lower frame rates and can increase the time needed to complete the same work. Hello Games says it invested heavily in battery life and thermodynamics, but it has not published numeric temperature limits or measured runtime by device.
- Play out of direct sunlight and away from other heat sources.
- Remove a heat-trapping case during long sessions if doing so is safe and practical for your device.
- Do not cover vents or place the device on bedding that blocks airflow.
- Take a break when the enclosure becomes uncomfortably hot instead of continuing until performance collapses.
- Charging while running a demanding 3D game can add heat; if endurance allows, play unplugged or charge in a well-ventilated position.
These are general cooling practices, not measured No Man’s Sky results. A cool room, a warm room, a worn battery, and different cases can produce different outcomes on the same model.
Diagnosing stutter, drain, and feature problems

How to judge your own battery and performance
No reliable public figures establish hours of play, watts, temperatures, or frames per second for each supported model. You can still make a useful personal comparison without treating it as a universal benchmark.
- Charge to a known level and note the time.
- Use the same display brightness, refresh-rate mode, controller state, and test scene for every profile.
- Play for a fixed period, such as 30 minutes, rather than stopping when the device feels different.
- Record battery percentage, perceived smoothness, and whether the enclosure became uncomfortable.
- Repeat on another day if the room temperature or battery state was unusual.
Report results as observations tied to the exact model, operating-system version, game build, brightness, and ambient conditions. Do not convert one session into a claim that every iPhone or iPad will achieve the same runtime.

What is and is not known about launch settings
Hello Games has confirmed the iOS platform range, feature requirements, controller support, download size, and its work on battery life and thermodynamics. It has not published a complete list of launch graphics sliders, per-device frame-rate targets, battery wattage, temperatures, or guaranteed hours of play. Consequently, any article or video claiming a universal “best” preset, exact runtime, or model-by-model FPS ranking is making a claim beyond the documented information unless it supplies reproducible testing conditions.
Use the stability-first method: select the best-looking option your device sustains, lower frame rate before resolution when endurance matters, keep the display refresh rate from exceeding the game’s target, and cool the device before heat causes throttling. Recheck the App Store listing and in-game options after launch because dates, availability, and labels can change by region or software version.
