Cooler design, firmware, sensors, case airflow, ambient temperature and game load all change the result. The reliable method is to keep the card’s automatic profile as your baseline, make one small adjustment at a time in software supported by your exact model, then check temperature and noise in the games you actually play.
This guide explains how to do that on supported AMD hardware, how to handle NVIDIA cards without assuming every model exposes the same controls, how to interpret GPU and hotspot readings, and how to fix common fan-curve problems without buying replacement hardware.

What a GPU fan curve actually controls
A fan curve maps a temperature reading to a fan command. As the GPU warms, the controller increases fan speed; as it cools, the controller reduces speed. Depending on the card and utility, the command may be expressed as a percentage, PWM duty cycle, revolutions per minute (RPM), or a temperature-to-speed profile.

The curve is only one part of the cooling system. A dual-fan cooler, blower, liquid-cooled card and compact single-fan card can produce very different temperatures and noise at the same reported fan speed. Firmware may also impose a minimum speed, a maximum speed, a ramp delay or a thermal safety override. For that reason, a percentage shown in a tuning panel is not a universal measure of cooling performance.

The practical target
Choose the quietest curve that keeps your card within the temperature limits specified for that exact GPU and avoids sustained clock or power reductions caused by heat. “Lower temperature” is not automatically better if it requires an unpleasant noise level, and “quiet” is not a success if the card repeatedly reaches a thermal limit.
Before changing anything
Identify the exact card
Write down the GPU family, board-partner model, BIOS mode and the utility you intend to use. Two cards using the same GPU chip can have different heatsinks, fan counts, firmware and available controls. Laptop GPUs and prebuilt-system cards may expose fewer options than retail desktop cards.
Record a baseline
Run a representative game for long enough to reach its normal steady state. Record the GPU temperature, any available hotspot or junction temperature, memory temperature, fan speed, clock behavior and your own noise impression. Use the same game, graphics settings, frame-rate cap and room conditions when comparing later changes.
- Measure while playing the games that matter to you, not only in a short synthetic test.
- Note whether the card is sitting in a menu, loading screen or active scene; these can create different loads.
- Record ambient room temperature because a curve that works in a cool room may be inadequate in summer.
- Save or photograph the original automatic settings so you can restore them.
Confirm what each sensor means
A GPU can expose more than one temperature. “GPU temperature,” “edge,” “core,” “hotspot” and “junction” are not interchangeable. A hotspot or junction value may be substantially higher because it reports the warmest area or a different sensor population. Memory temperature, when available, describes a separate component and may require a different cooling response.
AMD’s explanation for the RX 5700 series describes distributed sensors and says, “Operating at up to 110C Junction Temperature during typical gaming usage is expected and within spec.” That statement applies to the RX 5700 product family in that AMD article; it is not a safe target for every Radeon or NVIDIA GPU. For another model, use the temperature and junction limits in that model’s documentation.

AMD: setting a curve in Adrenalin
On supported AMD products, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition provides Fan Tuning controls. The names and available switches depend on the graphics product and generation, so do not assume that every card displays the same panel.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open Performance, then Tuning.
- Find Fan Tuning. If the page offers an automatic/manual selector, leave it on automatic first and note the existing behavior.
- If available, enable the manual control option. Some supported cards expose a curve, minimum fan speed, target speed or maximum fan speed; others expose fewer controls.
- Decide whether to leave Zero RPM enabled. AMD describes this as a quiet, light-load mode that lets the fans stop and then spin up as load and temperature increase.
- Apply the smallest change available, then run a representative game and observe every sensor the card reports.
- Save the result as a profile only after it behaves consistently. Adrenalin can apply global tuning and can also use game profiles, so check which scope you changed.
Zero RPM: when to keep it on
Zero RPM can eliminate fan noise on the desktop and during light work. It also means the fans repeatedly start and stop when a workload crosses the card’s start threshold. Keeping it enabled is reasonable if idle silence matters and the transition is unobtrusive. Disable it only if your card’s supported controls allow that choice and you prefer continuous low-speed airflow or want to avoid frequent start-stop behavior. AMD does not present Zero RPM as a universal requirement, and not every product supports it.
What older Radeon Pro documentation shows
AMD’s 2018 Radeon Pro/FirePro fan-control guide illustrates a manual workflow in which Speed is changed from Automatic to Manual, followed by adjustments to Min and Target before applying the settings. Treat this as an example for that Pro/FirePro software, not as proof that current consumer Adrenalin has identical labels or controls.
NVIDIA: check the model-specific control path
NVIDIA’s published examples do not establish one consumer GeForce interface that every card supports. The detailed temperature-to-fan profile documentation available from NVIDIA is for IGX developer hardware. It explains how temperature steps can map to PWM or RPM, how a continuous governor can interpolate between steps, and how hysteresis can delay a change until temperature moves far enough. Those concepts are useful for understanding a curve, but the example is not a ready-made GeForce preset.
NVIDIA’s NVAPI GPU Cooler Interface documents functions for retrieving tachometer readings and setting fan levels on supported targets. An API function does not guarantee that your retail card, firmware or preferred utility exposes it. Use the control panel supplied for your exact board or system, and verify that it reports a real fan tachometer value after applying a change.

- Identify the exact NVIDIA card and its board-partner utility.
- Open that utility’s hardware-monitoring or fan-control page and export or record the automatic profile.
- Check whether manual control is offered for the GPU fans, and whether the utility can read RPM or only a percentage.
- Change one point or one control step, apply it, and test in a real game.
- If the utility does not expose the control you need, do not assume a third-party program will support that model. Confirm compatibility from the utility and card documentation before installing it.
How to build a quieter curve without overheating
Use the following process instead of copying a percentage-temperature chart from another card.
1. Start with automatic control
Automatic firmware is the safest reference because it was designed for the card’s cooler, sensors and operating limits. A manual curve should improve a measured problem—excessive noise, abrupt ramping or unnecessary fan activity—not replace a profile that is already quiet and thermally stable.
2. Separate idle, light-load and gaming behavior
Decide whether the noise you dislike occurs at the desktop, during video playback, in menus or during sustained rendering. Zero RPM or a low idle command may address desktop noise, while a smoother ramp may address gaming noise. Changing the entire curve to fix one short spike can make the card louder for every workload.
3. Make one small change
Adjust only one available control step or point. Avoid changing minimum speed, target speed, maximum speed and every temperature point simultaneously. A single change tells you what caused the result and makes recovery straightforward.
4. Test until temperatures stabilize
Play a demanding scene long enough for the heatsink to warm through. Watch the reported GPU temperature and any hotspot, junction or memory readings. Also watch clocks and frame pacing: a temperature that looks acceptable can still coincide with thermal throttling or oscillation if the fan repeatedly ramps up and down.

5. Judge noise from your normal position
Noise measured at the case is not the same as noise at your desk. Listen for tonal whine, repeated ramping and resonance, not only overall loudness. A slightly faster but steady fan can sound less distracting than a fan that changes speed every few seconds.
6. Keep the best verified profile
Save a profile only after testing several games or workloads. Keep an automatic fallback and note the room temperature and game settings used for the test. Recheck the profile after a driver, firmware or BIOS update because control behavior can change.
A decision framework for common goals
| Goal | What to change first | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Silent desktop | Keep supported Zero RPM enabled or leave the automatic idle behavior unchanged. | Fan start-stop cycling when a background workload briefly raises temperature. |
| Less gaming noise | Smooth the ramp by making one modest adjustment at the temperature where the fan becomes audible. | Hotspot or junction rise, sustained clocks and whether the fan still reaches a sufficient speed in long sessions. |
| Lower peak temperature | Increase the relevant fan command gradually, or reduce the game’s frame rate or power demand if the utility offers those controls. | Noise at your seat, thermal throttling and whether the improvement is large enough to justify the sound. |
| Stop rapid oscillation | Use a smoother transition or a control with hysteresis if the supported utility provides one. | Whether temperature and fan speed settle instead of alternating around one threshold. |
| Cool memory | Check whether the card exposes a memory sensor and whether the cooler actually directs airflow over the memory modules. | Memory temperature separately from core or hotspot temperature. |
Why fan curves hunt up and down
Hunting occurs when a temperature crosses a threshold, the fan reacts, the temperature falls, and the fan immediately slows again. The cycle can be caused by closely spaced curve points, a steep ramp, a low thermal mass or a utility that applies changes instantly.
NVIDIA’s IGX documentation describes hysteresis: the controller can require a temperature movement before changing states again. If your supported utility offers hysteresis, ramp time or a smoothing option, use it to prevent rapid toggling. If it does not, move adjacent points farther apart or make the transition less abrupt, changing only one part at a time. Do not add a guessed delay through an unrelated tool without confirming that the card accepts it.
Temperature limits: avoid unsafe generalizations
There is no cross-vendor, all-model “safe gaming temperature” or universal fan percentage established by the manufacturer material used for this guide. A number copied from one product family can be wrong for another because sensor definitions, silicon, firmware and cooler design differ.
Best Value
- Use the exact GPU model’s specifications for core, junction or hotspot and memory limits.
- Identify which reading the specification refers to; a core limit is not automatically a junction limit.
- Consider sustained behavior rather than a brief spike during a scene change.
- Investigate sudden changes from your own baseline, such as a fan that no longer reaches its expected RPM or a hotspot gap that grows sharply.
For RX 5700-series owners, AMD’s 2019 community update specifically states that up to 110C junction temperature during typical gaming is expected and within spec. That is a product-family statement, not permission to target 110C on another GPU.
Troubleshooting a curve that does not work
The fans never respond
- Confirm that manual mode was actually enabled and the change was applied.
- Check whether the card is in a firmware-controlled or quiet BIOS mode.
- Verify that the utility supports your exact product generation.
- Read the tachometer or RPM value if available; a percentage slider without a changing RPM reading may not be controlling the intended fan.
The card is hotter after the change
- Restore the automatic profile and repeat the test under the same room and game conditions.
- Check whether you edited a minimum speed while leaving a lower target elsewhere in the profile.
- Look at hotspot, junction and memory readings rather than relying on one edge-temperature value.
- Confirm that the fans are unobstructed and that the card is receiving adequate case airflow; a fan curve cannot compensate for every airflow or hardware fault.
The card is louder but barely cooler
Return to the previous profile and compare the measured difference. If a large fan increase produces little improvement, the limiting factor may be heatsink contact, case airflow, ambient temperature or power load rather than fan speed. Replacement fans, additional case fans and thermal-paste work address specific hardware or maintenance problems; they are not prerequisites for choosing a software fan curve.
The curve resets after reboot
Check whether the utility requires an explicit profile save or a startup option. Driver updates, BIOS changes and crashes can also restore defaults. Keep the automatic profile available and do not rely on a setting you cannot verify after restarting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When changing a fan curve is the wrong fix
If temperatures changed suddenly, inspect the physical system before pursuing a more aggressive curve. Dust buildup, a failed fan, a loose cooler, blocked intake, a changed case layout or a new ambient condition can all raise temperatures. A manual curve may mask the symptom while increasing noise and leaving the underlying fault unresolved.
Likewise, if your goal is higher frame rates, fan speed alone does not create performance. A frame-rate cap, lower rendering load or an appropriate power setting can reduce heat and noise more effectively, provided those controls are supported by your card and your game.
Quick Recap
A repeatable testing checklist
- Record the exact GPU model, BIOS mode, driver and utility.
- Record ambient conditions and the automatic-profile results.
- Choose one representative game and a repeatable demanding scene.
- List every available sensor: GPU, hotspot or junction, memory and fan RPM.
- Change one supported control step.
- Run the same scene until temperatures and fan speed settle.
- Compare temperature, clocks, frame pacing and perceived noise.
- Test at least one other game before saving the profile.
- Keep an automatic fallback and restore it if the card becomes unstable.
Key takeaways
- The best curve is card-specific, not a universal temperature-and-percentage chart.
- Automatic control is the correct baseline; manual changes should be small and measurable.
- Zero RPM is an optional quiet-idle behavior on supported AMD products, not a rule for every card.
- Hotspot, junction, core and memory temperatures are distinct readings.
- NVIDIA’s IGX profile examples and NVAPI functions do not guarantee identical controls on every consumer card.
- Use the exact model’s specifications for temperature limits, and treat the RX 5700-series 110C junction statement only within that family’s context.
- Software tuning is the central task; replacement fans, case fans and thermal paste are separate repair or airflow decisions.
