For the most direct AI-off option, use DuckDuckGo’s dedicated No AI search experience. DuckDuckGo says it automatically turns off all AI features and filters AI-generated images. If you prefer Startpage, turn off both AI Summaries and its separate Instant Answers feature. Brave Search exposes an Answer with AI control, while Kagi documents AI instant answers but does not establish a reliable switch that removes every generated answer surface. No service should be called universally “AI-free” unless its current documentation defines exactly what is disabled.
What “without AI-generated overviews” should mean
Search engines now use several kinds of answer features, and they are not interchangeable. An AI-generated overview is a paragraph or set of bullets assembled by a model from indexed pages. An instant answer, knowledge panel, calculator, weather card or zero-click result may be generated from a database, an algorithm or an AI system. A search engine can therefore let you disable an AI summary while still showing answer-style modules.

DuckDuckGo No AI: the clearest strict option
What it promises
DuckDuckGo describes its No AI experience as a separate search destination that “automatically turns off all AI features and filters out AI-generated images—no settings required.” That is a narrower and more useful promise than inferring that the ordinary default page happens not to show an overview. The documented scope is the No AI experience itself.
How to use it
- Open noai.duckduckgo.com in your browser.
- Run a normal query and inspect the page for the conventional web-results list.
- Bookmark that address or set it as the search shortcut you use when you specifically want the No AI mode.
- When you use a browser address bar, confirm that the shortcut points to the No AI address rather than the ordinary DuckDuckGo endpoint.
There is no documented toggle you need to discover on the No AI page. DuckDuckGo’s ordinary settings page also directs users to this separate experience, which makes the route easier to explain to people who do not want to audit several independent preferences.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What “all AI features” does and does not establish
DuckDuckGo’s wording concerns features presented in this search experience. It does not establish that the company uses no machine-learning systems anywhere in its infrastructure. Crawling, spam filtering, ranking, image classification and abuse prevention can involve automated systems without producing an AI-written overview for you. If your requirement is “no generated answer shown to me,” the documented No AI mode addresses that requirement more directly than a claim about the provider’s entire technology stack.
When to choose it
- Choose it first when your priority is a documented, dedicated AI-off route.
- Choose it when you do not want to remember separate summary, instant-answer and image settings.
- Use a different service if you need a particular index, regional result behavior or privacy policy that DuckDuckGo’s No AI documentation does not address.
Startpage: disable two different answer systems
Turn off AI Summaries
Startpage makes AI Summaries optional. The documented path is:
Rank #2
- Integrated EasyList ad blocking.
- Tor Orbot proxy support.
- SSL certificate pinning.
- Import/export of settings and bookmarks.
- Open Startpage Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Find Summary and switch it off.
- Save the change.
Startpage’s support explanation says the feature is optional and that you control whether it is on or off. That setting targets the generated summary itself; it is not a blanket statement that every answer-style element has disappeared.
Disable Instant Answers separately
Startpage documents a separate Instant Answers feature and says it is enabled by default. The feature can include knowledge panels and zero-click answers. If your goal is a page dominated by ordinary links and snippets, disable this control under Settings → Appearance as well. A user who turns off Summary but leaves Instant Answers enabled may still see prominent non-link modules and reasonably conclude that the setting did not work, even though the two controls govern different features.
Startpage’s stated privacy process
Startpage says that, when it uses AI providers, it sends the question content after stripping identifying metadata such as your IP address, location and device information. This is the provider’s description of its process, not an independent audit. It also means privacy and AI-display settings are separate decisions: disabling a visible summary changes what appears on the results page, while the privacy description concerns how a request is handled when an AI provider is involved.
How to verify the result
- Run a query that normally produces a direct answer, such as a definition or a factual “how” question.
- Confirm that the Summary control remains off after saving and reopening settings.
- Check that Instant Answers is also off if you want to minimize knowledge panels and zero-click modules.
- Open a fresh private window to see whether a saved preference, cookie or regional interface is affecting the page.
Brave Search: useful control, not a categorical AI-free claim
What the provider documents
Brave Search exposes an Answer with AI setting. Its help material describes generated snippets based on Brave Search’s own index and an AI model that analyzes pages. That makes Brave relevant for people who want to control an answer feature, but it does not support describing the service as free of AI-generated answers in every configuration.
How to approach the setting
- Open Brave Search settings and locate the control labeled Answer with AI.
- Turn the feature off, then save or apply the setting if the interface presents a confirmation.
- Run several queries, including one that commonly triggers a direct answer.
- Inspect the page for an AI label, generated paragraph or answer module. If one remains, identify whether it is a different feature rather than assuming the toggle failed.
The exact placement of the control can change between the web interface, browser integration and regional versions. The reliable part of the documentation is the name and purpose of the setting, not a promise that one switch removes every answer component from every surface.

Who should use it
Brave is a reasonable choice if you already prefer its search experience and are comfortable checking the active setting. It is not the first recommendation for someone who needs a provider-documented, dedicated no-AI destination and does not want to test for residual generated modules.
Kagi Search: verify before treating it as a strict alternative
Kagi’s comparison documentation describes an AI feature for instant answers. The available documentation does not establish a current, reliable setting that suppresses every generated answer surface across Kagi interfaces and regions. That is an evidence limit, not proof that no control exists; product settings can change and may differ by plan or account state.
If you are considering Kagi, use this verification sequence before making it your default:
- Open the current Kagi settings and search for controls relating to AI, instant answers or generated responses.
- Read the description of each control rather than assuming that “instant answers off” covers summaries, snippets or other modules.
- Test the setting with several answer-oriented queries while signed in and, if possible, in a private window.
- Confirm that the preference persists after a new session and on the device where you normally search.
Until that check is complete, classify Kagi as a qualified alternative rather than a strict no-generated-answer recommendation.
How to choose among the alternatives
Start with the strictness you need
- Need the strongest documented route: start with DuckDuckGo’s No AI experience.
- Want to remove a summary but keep other search enhancements: use Startpage with Summary disabled, then decide separately whether Instant Answers should remain.
- Want a configurable answer feature: Brave can fit, provided you verify the Answer with AI setting and the resulting page.
- Are evaluating a paid or specialized search service: investigate Kagi’s current controls directly instead of assuming its AI instant-answer feature can be globally suppressed.
Consider what “alternative to Google” means for you
People use that phrase for different reasons. Some want conventional links because they prefer to read original pages. Others want privacy, an independent index, a familiar layout, fewer distractions or a service that does not require an account. The no-overview controls documented here answer only the generated-answer part of the question. They do not establish that the services have identical ranking, coverage, local results, freshness or speed.

Search quality is query-dependent. A service can be excellent for technical documentation and less useful for local businesses; another can return different news or shopping coverage because its index and ranking signals differ. No comparative performance test is established here, so use your own recurring queries before changing your default search engine.
Separate visible answers from backend automation
A conventional results page can still be produced by a highly automated system. “No AI-generated overview” means you are not shown a model-written answer block. It does not mean the provider hand-ranks every result or avoids machine learning in indexing, spam detection or ranking. This distinction prevents an unrealistic standard and lets you compare services on the behavior you can actually observe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical test plan for your own queries
Because settings and result layouts vary by query, location and date, use a small repeatable test rather than relying on one screenshot.
- Choose representative queries. Include a definition, a troubleshooting question, a named product or standard, a local-intent query and a query where you normally want several source links.
- Run each query on the same device and connection. Keep language, region and safe-search preferences consistent so you are comparing the search services rather than different localization settings.
- Record visible modules. Note whether the page contains a generated paragraph, citations attached to a model answer, a knowledge panel, a zero-click response, an image block or only ordinary links and snippets.
- Check the setting state. Reopen the service’s settings after searching. Some preferences are stored in cookies, while others may be tied to an account or a particular interface.
- Repeat in a private window. This helps reveal whether a saved preference, extension or personalized result is responsible for what you see.
- Decide by your actual threshold. If any generated module violates your requirement, use the service with the clearest documented scope or continue testing another option.
Do not treat this as a benchmark of relevance or speed. It is a configuration check: does the service present the type of result page you want under the conditions in which you search?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The wrong endpoint is open
For DuckDuckGo, confirm that the address is the dedicated No AI destination, not the ordinary search page. A browser shortcut, home-page button or address-bar keyword may still point to the default endpoint.
Best Value
Only one of several controls was changed
On Startpage, Summary and Instant Answers are separate. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other. Review both controls under Appearance.
The interface is different from the help article
Settings can be presented differently in a browser integration, mobile view or regional interface. Look for the documented feature name—such as Answer with AI, Summary or Instant Answers—rather than relying on the position of a switch from an older screenshot.
A generated-looking block is not necessarily the same feature
Knowledge panels, calculators and zero-click answers can look like an AI overview while being governed by another system. Identify the module’s label and help description before concluding that the selected AI setting failed.

A preference did not persist
Cookies, cleared site data, private browsing and account changes can reset local settings. Save the preference, open a new session and test again. If the service offers no documented persistence guarantee, treat the setting as session-dependent and check it periodically.
Privacy and account questions to check separately
The sources establishing the AI controls do not provide a complete, side-by-side account of pricing, registration, retention, logging, regional availability or search-index ownership. Do not infer those properties from the presence or absence of an overview. Before adopting a service, read its current privacy policy and terms for your country, and check whether the setting is available without an account.
Startpage’s statement about stripping identifying metadata before sending question content to AI providers is useful context, but it remains a vendor statement rather than independent verification. DuckDuckGo’s No AI description likewise defines the features disabled in that experience; it is not a claim that no automated methods exist anywhere in the service.
Bottom line for choosing a Google alternative
Use DuckDuckGo’s No AI experience when a clearly documented, dedicated AI-off route is your top requirement. Choose Startpage when you want granular control, remembering to disable Instant Answers separately from AI Summaries. Consider Brave Search if its Answer with AI control meets your threshold after testing the page. Treat Kagi as conditional until you verify a current way to suppress every generated answer surface you care about. Whichever service you choose, test your own recurring queries and revisit the settings because search features and regional interfaces can change.
