Best Google Photos Alternatives for Searching Photos by Person or Pet (2026 Guide)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Photos is the best-supported Google Photos alternative for finding pictures by a person or pet if you already use Apple devices. Its People & Pets collection recognizes people, dogs, and cats; after you name a group, you can search for that name. Face analysis runs on the device, and names stay synchronized across Apple devices when iCloud Photos is enabled.

For everyone else, the right choice depends on a trade-off: a managed cloud service is easier to maintain, an end-to-end encrypted service emphasizes confidentiality, and a self-hosted library gives you control at the cost of hardware, backups, updates, and troubleshooting. Amazon Photos may suit Prime subscribers, but its current pet-search coverage and plan limits need checking in your region. Ente Photos makes strong end-to-end-encryption claims, while its current person-and-pet workflow should be verified before you migrate.

What to compare before leaving Google Photos

Searching by name is more than a face-detection feature. A useful replacement must let you create or confirm identity groups, name them, correct wrong matches, merge duplicate groups, and retrieve results from the phone, computer, or web interface you actually use. Pets matter too: some services recognize dogs and cats, while others may only offer ordinary keyword or metadata search.

  • People and pet workflow: Can it recognize faces, include pets, let you name groups, fix mistakes, merge duplicates, and search by name?
  • Platform coverage: Is there a reliable app for your phone, a desktop workflow, and a browser interface?
  • Privacy model: Distinguish on-device analysis, end-to-end encryption, encryption at rest, and the provider’s access to your library. These are different protections.
  • Storage and cost: Check current quotas, whether photos and videos share storage, regional pricing, and whether a subscription is required for the features you need.
  • Backup and export: Confirm that you can download original files and keep an independent copy before deleting the old library.
  • Sharing and maintenance: Managed services handle servers for you; self-hosted systems make you responsible for updates, backups, security, and recovery.

Prices, regional features, and software compatibility change frequently. Treat the comparison below as a decision framework and confirm the provider’s current documentation before paying or moving a large library.

Quick comparison

Option People and pet search Platform fit Privacy and control Maintenance Best for
Apple Photos with iCloud Photos Recognizes people, dogs, and cats in People & Pets; named groups can be searched; groups can be merged and corrected. Strongest for households using iPhone, iPad, and Mac; iCloud keeps names current across enabled Apple devices. Apple says face analysis is on-device. This does not mean the entire library is end-to-end encrypted by default. Low; Apple operates the service, while you manage storage and backups. Apple-device users who want the closest documented person-and-pet workflow.
Amazon Photos Secondary comparisons describe facial-recognition and metadata search, but current pet coverage and exact grouping behavior are not established here. Check current mobile, desktop, and web support in your country. Cloud-managed; review current privacy and account controls. Low, with provider-managed infrastructure. Prime subscribers willing to verify the current search and storage terms first.
Ente Photos Its comparison material discusses photo search, but the present named-person and pet workflow, including correction and merging, must be verified in the current app. Confirm supported operating systems, browser access, and family-sharing features before migration. Ente presents the service as end-to-end encrypted. That is a vendor statement, not an independent audit of every feature. Low server maintenance for the customer. Readers prioritizing encrypted cloud storage who can validate feature fit.
Self-hosted library on a NAS Depends on the software you install; face and pet recognition, naming, and correction features vary by application and version. Potentially broad, but you must configure mobile uploads, desktop access, and remote connectivity. Maximum ownership and local control, with your own responsibility for account security and backups. High: hardware, operating-system updates, application updates, monitoring, and recovery are yours. Technically confident users who accept upkeep in exchange for control.

Apple Photos: the strongest documented fit for Apple households

How People & Pets works

Apple Photos groups recognized people, dogs, and cats in People & Pets. Open Photos, go to the People & Pets collection, select a group, and give it a name. Once named, that person or pet can be found through Search. The system also lets you merge duplicate identity groups and correct photos that were assigned to the wrong person or pet.

The practical result is a workflow close to what most people mean by “search my photos by person or pet”: select or type a name, review the matching library, and refine the group when Photos gets an image wrong. Recognition is not a guarantee of perfect results. Backlit faces, profile shots, masks, low-resolution images, changing hairstyles, and similar-looking pets can all require manual correction.

Privacy and synchronization

Apple describes Photos as using on-device analysis to recognize faces and organize people in People & Pets. When iCloud Photos is enabled, named people and faces remain up to date across your iCloud-enabled Apple devices. That is useful if you name a pet on an iPhone and expect the same label on an iPad or Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not extend that statement into a claim that the whole photo library is end-to-end encrypted by default. Apple describes Enhanced Visual Search separately for landmarks and points of interest. For that feature, the device creates an encrypted embedding and Apple describes privacy protections for the matching process. Enhanced Visual Search is not the named-person-and-pet workflow, so it should not be used as evidence that all People & Pets processing uses the same mechanism.

Setup checklist

  1. Update each Apple device to a supported Photos version and sign in with the same Apple Account.
  2. Turn on iCloud Photos in the device’s Photos or iCloud settings if you want names and albums synchronized.
  3. Open Photos and find People & Pets.
  4. Select a person or pet group, assign a clear name, and repeat for the groups you use most.
  5. Use Search to test the name, then review results for false matches.
  6. Merge duplicate groups and remove or reassign incorrectly identified images.
  7. Before deleting another service, export original files and verify that shared albums, metadata, and videos are present.

Where Apple Photos is a poor fit

Apple Photos is ecosystem-specific. A household centered on Android, Windows, or mixed devices should confirm that every user can access the library in the way they need before committing. iCloud storage is also shared across iCloud data, and the available quota and pricing depend on the current plan in your region. The service is convenient, but it is not a substitute for an independent backup.

Amazon Photos: potentially convenient, but verify the details

Secondary comparison coverage describes Amazon Photos as a cloud alternative with facial recognition and metadata-based search and highlights storage benefits for Prime subscribers. Those are useful reasons to investigate it, but they are not enough to promise an equivalent people-and-pet experience.

Questions to answer before subscribing or migrating

  • Does the current version group and search pets, or only human faces, in your country?
  • Can you name groups, correct a wrong match, and merge duplicate groups?
  • Are the mobile, desktop, and browser interfaces all available on your platforms?
  • Exactly how much photo and video storage does your account receive, and do photos and videos consume the same quota?
  • Can you export original files with their metadata and album structure?
  • What happens to your library and labels if a Prime benefit ends or you cancel?

Check Amazon’s current help and plan pages immediately before purchase. Storage allowances, regional availability, and search behavior are volatile; do not assume that a benefit advertised for photographs includes unlimited video or the same recognition features in every market.

Ente Photos: an encrypted-cloud route that needs feature validation

Ente’s own comparison material positions Ente Photos as an end-to-end encrypted service and compares its search, sharing, setup, and privacy with other cloud and self-hosted choices. End-to-end encryption can reduce the provider’s ability to inspect your originals, but the exact way face indexing, search, sharing, and recovery work still matters.

Verify these capabilities in the current app

  • Whether named-person groups are generated at all, and whether pets are included.
  • Whether recognition happens locally, through a protected service, or through another architecture.
  • How you rename, merge, correct, or delete an identity group.
  • Which devices and browsers can search the library.
  • Storage limits, family or shared-library behavior, and the treatment of video.
  • How to export originals and recover the account if you lose credentials or recovery material.

“End-to-end encrypted” is not interchangeable with “on-device analysis.” A service may encrypt files in transit and at rest, or it may provide end-to-end encryption with different limits for search indexes and thumbnails. Read the current technical and account-recovery documentation rather than assuming that one privacy label describes every component.

Self-hosting: maximum control, maximum responsibility

A self-hosted photo library runs on hardware you control, commonly a network-attached storage (NAS) device or a home server. Applications in this category can offer face recognition, named people, pet albums, timelines, and browser access, but the feature set depends on the particular software release. Comparison material identifies NAS-based choices such as Synology Photos as examples; the NAS is an enabling computer and storage system, not a standalone search application.

What you must provide

  • A NAS or server with enough capacity for originals, previews, indexes, and future growth.
  • Photo-library software that explicitly supports the people-and-pet features you need.
  • Reliable network access and a secure method for remote use if you need photos away from home.
  • At least one independent backup destination, such as an external hard drive stored separately from the NAS.
  • A schedule for operating-system, application, and security updates.
  • A documented recovery process, including administrator credentials and encryption keys where applicable.

Why RAID is not a backup

Redundant disks can keep a system running when one drive fails, but they do not protect against accidental deletion, malware, theft, fire, controller failure, or a bad synchronization job. Keep a separate, versioned backup and test that you can restore original photos. If the NAS is in the same room as the primary computer, a fire or theft can remove both copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance burden

You are responsible for monitoring disk health, replacing failed drives, applying updates, checking recognition jobs, securing remote access, and testing restores. A self-hosted system can be the right answer for a technically confident household with strong backup discipline; it is a poor fit if you want someone else to handle server operations.

Privacy models explained

Term What it means What it does not prove
On-device analysis The recognition computation is performed on your phone, tablet, or computer. Apple describes face analysis in Photos this way. It does not prove that every thumbnail, index, backup, or other cloud feature is processed locally.
End-to-end encryption Content is encrypted so that only authorized endpoints should be able to decrypt it. It does not automatically explain how search indexes, sharing, recovery, or account metadata work.
Encryption at rest Stored data is encrypted on provider or device storage. The provider may still be able to process decrypted content while a feature runs.
Vendor privacy statement A company’s description of its collection, access, or advertising practices. It is not the same as an independent security audit or a guarantee of future policy.
Self-hosting You operate the server and retain direct control over the files and software. It does not remove risk; you become responsible for security, updates, backups, and physical protection.

Google says that face grouping is optional, that face groups and labels are visible only to the account holder, and that the setting can be turned off. Google also states: “Google Photos doesn’t sell your photos, videos, or personal information to anyone and we don’t use your photos and videos for advertising.” These are Google’s statements from its Safety Center, not an independent audit. They are useful comparison points, but the same privacy questions still apply when evaluating another provider.

How to migrate without losing searchable memories

Do not delete your Google Photos library as soon as an import finishes. Face labels are service-specific, and there is no established universal process that transfers named-person or pet groups between platforms.

  1. Choose a small test set. Include ordinary portraits, group photos, older low-resolution images, several pets, videos, shared albums, and files with important captions or locations.
  2. Export originals first. Keep an untouched copy on an external drive or another independent destination. Confirm that downloaded files open and that dates, locations, and other metadata are present.
  3. Import the test set. Let indexing finish before judging search results; large libraries may need substantial time and local storage for previews.
  4. Test the exact workflow. Name a person and a pet, search each name, inspect false positives and misses, correct wrong assignments, and try merging duplicate groups.
  5. Check every device. Verify phone, computer, and browser access for each household member who needs it. Test uploads from the devices you actually use.
  6. Verify sharing. Open shared albums from a second account or device and confirm that recipients can see the intended originals rather than only previews.
  7. Measure storage. Compare the imported photo and video total with the plan quota or available NAS capacity. Leave headroom for new captures and indexes.
  8. Run a restore test. Download a sample of originals from the new system and restore them to a separate folder or drive.
  9. Keep the old library during a transition period. Only after search, sharing, exports, and backups work should you consider removing the source copy.

Investigate Amazon Photos if Prime is already part of your household

Amazon Photos is worth a controlled trial if you already receive its storage benefit, but verify pet recognition, quotas, exports, and platform support first. Do not move your only copy until those tests pass.

Investigate Ente Photos if encrypted cloud storage is the priority

Ente is a candidate for readers who value the provider’s end-to-end-encryption design. Confirm that its current person-and-pet search is good enough for your library and that recovery and export procedures are acceptable.

Self-host if control outweighs convenience

Choose a NAS-based library only when you are prepared to buy and protect hardware, maintain software, and operate independent backups. It is a control decision, not a shortcut to a maintenance-free Google Photos replacement.

Common problems and fixes

A person or pet does not appear

Add more clear, front-facing examples to the library, allow indexing to complete, and inspect whether the service supports that type of subject. Some systems recognize human faces but do not support pets, while others may only recognize certain animals.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Two identities are split into separate groups

Use the service’s merge function if available. If there is no merge control, rename groups consistently and keep the most complete group as the reference; do not assume labels will transfer during a later export.

Wrong photos are attached to a name

Remove the incorrect images and add representative images of the intended person or pet. Similar faces, reflections, costumes, and nearly identical animals can confuse automated recognition.

Search works on one device but not another

Confirm that the same account is signed in, synchronization is enabled, the device has finished downloading the index, and the app is current. On a self-hosted system, check that the server is reachable and that the client is pointed at the correct library.

The library fills the quota unexpectedly

Check whether videos, previews, edits, and shared copies consume the same storage pool as originals. Export and remove duplicates only after verifying the independent backup and the restore path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A self-hosted server fails

Do not rebuild from memory. Check disk health, recent updates, network access, and the last known-good backup. Restore a copy of the originals first, then rebuild indexes or the application as needed. A working backup is more valuable than a RAID status that merely reports healthy disks.

Bottom line

For Apple-device households, Apple Photos is the clearest recommendation because its People & Pets workflow explicitly covers named people, dogs, and cats, with on-device face analysis and iCloud synchronization. Amazon Photos is a conditional option for Prime subscribers, Ente Photos is a conditional option for people prioritizing end-to-end encryption, and self-hosting is for readers willing to manage hardware and backups. In every case, test a representative subset, preserve an independent copy of the originals, and verify person-and-pet search before retiring Google Photos.
