There is no single replacement that matches Google Photos in every way. Apple users may prefer iCloud Photos, privacy-focused users may consider Proton Drive, and people who want local control can look at Synology Photos—but that requires buying and maintaining a NAS. Before switching, decide whether you need convenient syncing, a separate recoverable copy, or both: the services’ published feature descriptions do not establish that any one of them alone is a complete disaster-recovery plan.

How to choose an alternative

Start with the devices in your household, how much storage your photos and videos need, and what you want to optimize: convenience, privacy, sharing, or control over where files are stored. Also distinguish a synced library from an independent backup. A service may upload and synchronize files without establishing that it will protect you from every deletion, account problem, or hardware failure.

  • Device mix: Consider how well the service fits your phones and computers, including access for relatives who use another platform.
  • Storage: Check whether space is shared with email or documents, and confirm how the service handles original-quality photos and large videos.
  • Privacy and control: Compare the provider’s stated encryption model with the responsibility and upkeep involved in hosting files yourself.
  • Library and sharing tools: Search, editing, albums, collaborative uploads, and family sharing are not interchangeable across services.
  • Exit plan: Verify downloaded files and metadata before deleting the source library.

Google Photos as the baseline

Google advertises automatic backup, search, editing and organization, sharing, and a 15 GB Google Account allowance shared among Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. That shared quota matters: the amount available for photos depends on what the account already uses. Google lists Storage saver, Original quality, and Express quality; Original-quality uploads use account storage, and Google says full-resolution RAW photos and large 4K videos can be stored subject to the account limit and selected quality. See Google Photos and Google’s storage help.

Google’s help page says that when an account is out of storage, new photos and videos cannot be saved. It also describes potential deletion after two years of inactivity or while over quota, with notice under the stated policy. Because retention rules can change, check the current policy for your account before relying on it.

Which alternative fits your situation?

Service Best fit What is established Important trade-off
iCloud Photos Apple-centered households High-resolution photo and video storage, space-saving device copies, Shared Albums, and a Shared Photo Library that can include up to five other people. Its strongest fit is within Apple’s ecosystem; browser and Windows access should not be assumed to match the full Apple Photos experience.
Proton Drive People prioritizing a privacy-oriented cloud option Proton advertises automatic mobile photo backups and collaborative albums. It says files and their names are encrypted on-device before upload. The encryption description is Proton’s claim, not an independent security audit. Google Photos-equivalent search, editing, and organization were not established.
Synology Photos People willing to self-host and maintain hardware Mobile automatic photo and video backup, sharing controls, timeline and folder views, RAW support, and advertised face/object recognition. Requires a Synology NAS and disks; hardware, upkeep, and off-site protection are separate considerations.
OneDrive People already using Microsoft services A general-purpose cloud storage option with an official product page. Specific photo workflow, capacity, and current costs are not established here; check current Microsoft support and plan details.
Amazon Photos Some existing Amazon or Prime customers It is surfaced as an alternative in a secondary comparison. Current country eligibility, photo and video allowances, and account terms should be confirmed with Amazon before choosing it.

iCloud Photos for Apple households

Apple describes iCloud Photos as storing high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud while allowing space-saving versions on devices. Shared Albums support photos, videos, and comments over time, and Apple says people using Android or Windows can contribute. Shared Photo Library can include up to five other people. These features make iCloud a natural candidate if most of the household uses Apple devices, rather than a universal cross-platform winner. Details are on Apple’s iCloud+ page.

For the US, Apple’s page showed these monthly prices when accessed on October 4, 2026: 50 GB for $0.99, 200 GB for $2.99, 2 TB for $9.99, 6 TB for $29.99, and 12 TB for $59.99. Prices are region-specific and can change, so confirm the plan and price in your market.

Proton Drive for a privacy-oriented cloud option

Proton advertises automatic photo backup on mobile and collaborative albums, with apps for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and the web. Proton says files and their names are encrypted on the device before upload, so only the user and chosen recipients can access their contents. Treat that as Proton’s description of its own service, not as independent verification. Proton listed 5 GB on its Free plan on the product page accessed in 2026; that page did not provide a reliable captured price for paid tiers. See Proton Drive.

Synology Photos for a self-hosted library

Synology Photos stores a library on a Synology NAS, which the company says is required to use the app. The mobile app can automatically back up new photos and videos. Synology also advertises timeline and folder views, RAW support, face and object recognition, conditional albums, and sharing for individual media or albums with password and expiration controls. Some HEIC/HEVC formats may require Synology Image Assistant depending on DiskStation Manager version. Feature details are on Synology Photos.

The Photos software has no separate paid premium tier, but that does not make the setup cost-free: you need a NAS and storage disks, and you are responsible for operating and maintaining the hardware. A NAS kept in one location is not automatically an off-site copy. Model choice depends on capacity, number of bays, compatible drives, and how much administration you are prepared to do.

OneDrive and Amazon Photos: verify the details first

OneDrive is worth considering if you already use Microsoft services, but confirm its current camera-upload workflow, photo features, capacity, and plan costs before committing. The available Microsoft product information does not establish those specifics. Start with Microsoft’s OneDrive page.

Switch without losing the source library

The reviewed service descriptions do not establish that every destination preserves album structure, metadata, or all media types exactly as the source does. Treat the move as a verification process, not a one-click replacement.

Choosing the right replacement

Choose iCloud Photos if Apple integration is your priority; Proton Drive if Proton’s stated encryption model is central to your decision; or Synology Photos if you want to host the library yourself and accept the hardware and maintenance. OneDrive and Amazon Photos may fit existing ecosystems, but confirm their current photo-specific terms before migrating. Whatever you choose, decide separately whether you need another recoverable copy beyond the service that syncs your everyday library.
