Mapstr is the best all-around Google Maps alternative for a large, organized place library. It combines custom tags, comments, collaboration, proximity alerts, and imports from Google Maps and Foursquare. Choose Wanderlog when saved places must become a shared itinerary with dates, routes, bookings, and budgets. Choose Apple Maps for Apple-device integration, Guides, and less account-linked location data. Choose Organic Maps for offline navigation, open-source mapping, and minimal data collection.
The right choice depends on whether you are managing a personal database of restaurants and ideas, coordinating a trip with other people, or navigating without a reliable connection. The comparison below separates those jobs instead of treating every saved-place feature as equivalent.

What Google Maps already does
Google Maps remains the baseline because it combines a very large mainstream place database with familiar reviews, directions, and social sharing. You can create lists, save a place to a list, share lists with other people, follow lists made by others, and display saved places on the map. Google also documents a screenshot workflow: Maps can recognize places in an uploaded screenshot and offer to save them to a custom list.

Mapstr: best for tagging and a personal place library
Why it stands out
Mapstr is the closest match when your problem is not finding places but finding them again. Its official product page lists saved addresses on an interactive map, custom tags, comments, collaboration on the same map, alerts when you pass near a saved place, and imports from Google Maps and Foursquare. That combination makes it more like a searchable place database than a collection of undifferentiated pins.
The service page displayed 105,456,789 places saved by users on October 18, 2026. That number is a page snapshot, not a guarantee of active users or of coverage in a particular city, but it illustrates the scale of the shared system.
How to organize a collection
- Import your existing Google Maps or Foursquare addresses using Mapstr’s import function.
- Create a small, consistent tag vocabulary, such as ramen, date night, under $25, hotel and day trip. Use tags for attributes you will filter repeatedly, not for one-off comments.
- Add a comment to each place for details that change or need context, such as the dish to order, a reservation rule or the friend who recommended it.
- Use the interactive map to spot clusters and the proximity-alert feature to surface a saved place when you are nearby.
- Invite collaborators only to maps where shared editing is useful; keep a private master map for places that are personal or unfinished.
Trade-offs
Mapstr’s evidence is strongest for tagging, notes, imports and map-based retrieval. Its product page does not state offline search, export formats, pricing, platform coverage or privacy terms, so verify those points in your region before moving a critical archive. It is also not presented as a trip-management system with dates, reservations and budgets. If your saved places need a day-by-day schedule, Wanderlog is the more natural fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

When a bookmark list is not enough
Wanderlog puts “your itinerary and your map in one view.” Its product description combines user-shared guides with bookings, budgets and collaborative trip planning. That is a different information model from a tag library: each place belongs to a trip, has a position in a sequence, and can be evaluated against time and cost constraints.

Wanderlog’s current product page says, “Over 1 million people have already tried Wanderlog.” The product-page statement was observed on October 18, 2026; it does not specify a country, active-user count or measurement method.
A practical group-trip workflow
- Create one trip for the destination and travel dates rather than one giant list for every future idea.
- Add candidate restaurants, attractions and lodging to the trip map or a shared guide.
- Place confirmed stops into the itinerary in time order. Keep undecided ideas in the map or guide so they do not distort the schedule.
- Record bookings and estimated costs where the service provides those fields, then use the budget view to expose expensive days before the trip starts.
- Invite companions to edit the same trip. Ask contributors to add a short reason with each suggestion so the group can decide without repeating research.
- Review the map and itinerary together: a visually close cluster may still be impractical if opening hours or reservations force a different order.
Trade-offs
Wanderlog is purpose-built for group travel, but that focus can feel heavy if you only want a permanent restaurant database. Its product description does not specify offline navigation, migration formats, account requirements or privacy policies. Treat it as an itinerary workspace first and a universal archive second.
Apple Maps: best for Apple devices and privacy
Guides and native integration
Apple Maps supports saved places, user-created Guides, place cards, search filters and sharing, with synchronization across Apple devices. Apple’s product page says there are nearly 1,000 curated Guides. Availability and the details of individual features vary by region, so a Guide or filter shown in one country may not appear in another.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple states: “Maps doesn’t include a sign-in, where you go isn’t associated with your Apple Account at all.” That is a specific privacy design claim about Maps, not a promise that every surrounding Apple service or third-party extension has identical data practices.

How to build a Guide
- Save a place from its place card, then add it to a new or existing Guide.
- Name Guides by a stable purpose, such as Tokyo 2027, Accessible museums or Weekend walks, rather than by the month you created them.
- Use search filters and place-card information to check the type of venue before adding it. Keep notes in the Guide or the place card where the current interface allows them.
- Share a Guide with companions when they need to view or contribute, and let device synchronization keep the same collection available on your Apple hardware.
Who should choose it
Apple Maps is the low-friction choice for someone already using an iPhone, iPad and Mac who values native sharing and less account-linked location data. It is less suitable if your primary requirement is importing a large archive into many custom tags, exporting bookmarks to open formats, or coordinating reservations and budgets. Apple’s product page does not establish a general-purpose export format or universal offline behavior.
Organic Maps: best for offline and privacy-first use
Offline capabilities
Organic Maps describes itself as a privacy-focused offline maps and GPS app powered by OpenStreetMap. Its feature list includes offline maps and search, turn-by-turn navigation for walking, cycling and driving, and bookmark import/export in KML, KMZ, GPX and GeoJSON. Those formats are useful when you already maintain place data in a compatible mapping or GIS tool and need a copy that works without a network connection.
The project says it has no ads, no tracking, no data collection and no mandatory registration. It also says, “In December 2025, Organic Maps reached 6M installs.” That is the project’s stated install milestone, not a measure of monthly active users or map quality in every country.

- Export or obtain your places in KML, KMZ, GPX or GeoJSON. Organic Maps’ product materials do not establish a universal one-click export from Google Maps, so confirm that your current source can produce one of these formats.
- Import the file into Organic Maps before leaving reliable connectivity.
- Download the map areas you will need and test search and turn-by-turn directions with your device offline.
- Keep separate bookmark groups for lodging, transport, food and emergency services so the map remains usable when you are moving.
- Update the source file periodically; offline data is only as current as the last map and bookmark update.
Trade-offs
Organic Maps prioritizes navigation, open data and minimal tracking over social discovery. Its feature list does not describe reviews, user-shared guides, collaborative editing, reservations or budgets. OpenStreetMap coverage and place freshness can differ by location, so check important addresses before relying on them for a time-sensitive journey.

Moving saved places from Google Maps
Use a direct importer when organization matters
Mapstr explicitly advertises imports from Google Maps and Foursquare. If you want to preserve a large collection and then add tags, comments and alerts, start there instead of rebuilding every place manually. After importing, clean duplicate addresses, standardize tags and add comments while the context is still fresh.
Use open formats when offline access matters
Organic Maps accepts KML, KMZ, GPX and GeoJSON for bookmark import and export. This is the most portable route when your source can supply one of those formats. Keep the original file unchanged as a backup, then work on a copy so you can recover if fields or coordinates are lost during conversion.
What is not established
The product descriptions do not specify a complete Google Maps export procedure, whether comments, photos, list membership or ratings survive migration, or how duplicates are resolved. Plan for a verification pass: compare a sample of addresses, inspect coordinates, and confirm that critical opening hours and reservation details still come from a current source.
Choosing by the job you need to do
For a searchable personal archive
Choose Mapstr when tags, comments, proximity alerts and Google Maps imports are more important than a calendar. Design your taxonomy before importing so the archive remains useful at 500 or 5,000 places.
Best Value
For a group vacation
Choose Wanderlog when dates, route order, bookings, budgets and shared editing are all part of the same decision. It reduces the handoff between a bookmark list, a spreadsheet and a messaging thread.
For Apple-native privacy
Choose Apple Maps when your devices are already in Apple’s ecosystem and you want Guides, synchronization and the stated no-sign-in design. Check regional availability before depending on a specific filter or curated Guide.
For weak connectivity
Choose Organic Maps when offline search and navigation are non-negotiable. Import compatible bookmark files, download map areas and test the complete workflow before departure.
When staying with Google Maps is sensible
Keep Google Maps if the largest mainstream place database, familiar reviews, shareable lists and screenshot-to-list saving outweigh deeper tagging or offline requirements. Switching apps has a maintenance cost; a smaller specialist tool is only better when its distinctive workflow solves a problem you regularly encounter.
Common pitfalls and fixes
- One giant list: Split permanent categories from trip-specific collections. A tag system or separate Guides make retrieval faster than a chronological dump.
- Inconsistent tags: Decide singular/plural, spelling and price notation before importing. Merge near-duplicates immediately.
- Confusing a map with an itinerary: A pin shows location; it does not prove the stop fits your dates, opening hours or budget. Use an itinerary-focused tool for those constraints.
- Assuming every app is offline: Offline navigation is explicitly listed for Organic Maps, not established for the other alternatives in the product descriptions. Download maps and run a real offline test.
- Assuming privacy claims transfer: Apple’s no-sign-in statement and Organic Maps’ no-tracking claims apply to those products as described. Do not generalize them to other apps.
- Trusting stale place data: Recheck addresses, hours and booking requirements before a critical visit, especially after importing an old archive.
- Skipping a backup: Keep an untouched export in KML, KMZ, GPX or GeoJSON when your workflow supports it, and retain the original source list until you have checked the migration.
Bottom line
Mapstr is the strongest Google Maps replacement for saving and organizing places because it adds the tags, comments, collaboration, proximity alerts and imports that a growing place library needs. Wanderlog wins when the collection must become a collaborative itinerary with bookings and budgets. Apple Maps is the practical Apple-device choice for Guides and the stated no-sign-in approach, while Organic Maps is the specialist choice for offline, open-source, privacy-first navigation. Stay with Google Maps when its mainstream coverage, reviews and familiar sharing already meet your needs.
