Best Google Keep alternatives for Android note-taking (2026)

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose NotallyX if you want Google Keep’s fast card-and-checklist experience without default cloud storage. Choose Simplenote for the simplest free cross-platform text sync, Notesnook or Standard Notes for encrypted notes, Joplin for open-source notebooks and attachments, Obsidian for a local-first knowledge base, and OneNote if your work already runs on Microsoft’s ecosystem. The right replacement depends less on a feature checklist than on where your notes should live, how much structure you need, and whether you are willing to manage a sync service.

Android Authority’s 2026 reader polls show why people are switching: in an April poll of 797 respondents, 45% said security was their reason for leaving Keep. In a separate September 5 poll with 921 votes, NotallyX led the alternatives with 32%, followed by Joplin at 16% and Simplenote at 15%.

Start with the decision that matters

Google Keep is hard to replace when your priority is opening an app, typing a few words, checking off a task, or pinning a short reminder. Alternatives become more compelling when you need one of four things Keep is not designed to be: local ownership of your files, strong encryption, a deeper notebook hierarchy, or a serious long-form knowledge system.

  • Keep-like capture on Android: NotallyX uses a card-style interface, checklists, color coding, attachments, and rich text while keeping notes on the device by default.
  • Free, automatic basics across devices: Simplenote synchronizes text notes across major platforms and adds tags, Markdown, version history, collaboration, and web publishing.
  • Private notes with a full editor: Notesnook combines zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption with rich text, tables, notebooks, tags, attachments, reminders, and synchronized devices.
  • Open-source structure: Joplin offers Markdown, notebooks and sub-notebooks, tags, attachments, to-dos, scanning, plugins, and several synchronization routes.
  • Local files and linked knowledge: Obsidian stores notes locally, works offline without an account, and can add encrypted Sync, history, selective synchronization, recovery, and shared vaults.
  • Encryption-first plain notes: Standard Notes keeps the basic editor deliberately simple and adds richer editors, attachments, backups, and extended history in paid plans.
  • Microsoft workflow: OneNote is the most natural candidate when your notebooks, files, and collaboration already center on Microsoft 365, Windows, or OneDrive.

App Best fit Android and other platforms Storage and synchronization Editing and organization Privacy position
NotallyX Fast, Keep-style capture Android; Android-only focus Local-first; optional Syncthing-Fork synchronization Cards, checklists, colors, attachments, rich text, configurable backups, automatic trash deletion Notes remain on the device by default
Simplenote Free text notes across devices Android and major desktop/web platforms Automatic cross-platform sync Tags, Markdown, version history, collaboration, public web publishing No end-to-end encryption
Notesnook Private notes with rich editing Android and other devices Cross-device synchronization Rich text, media, embedded items, tables, tags, notebooks, reminders, pinning, Focus mode Zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption
Joplin Open-source notebooks and research Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, terminal, web clipper Joplin Cloud or another cloud/personal-cloud service Markdown, rich text, sub-notebooks, tags, attachments, to-dos, scanning, plugins Open-source; synchronization choice is yours
Obsidian Local-first knowledge base Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux Local vault; optional encrypted Sync Linked notes and knowledge-base features; Sync adds history, selective file sync, recovery, and shared vaults Local files; encrypted Sync is optional
Standard Notes Sensitive text notes Cross-device synchronization Synchronization across devices Tags, folders, app lock, two-factor authentication, password-protected notes; richer editors and attachments on paid plans Zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption
Microsoft OneNote Microsoft ecosystem users Cross-device Microsoft ecosystem Microsoft account and OneDrive-centered workflow Deep notebooks, handwriting, media, and collaboration are the areas to compare Depends on Microsoft account and storage settings

The table separates a product’s default behavior from optional services. “Local-first” does not mean a note is automatically backed up; “sync” does not necessarily mean the provider cannot access content. Check the current privacy policy and plan limits before storing irreplaceable material.

NotallyX: the closest replacement for Keep’s quick-capture habit

NotallyX is the most direct answer for someone who likes Keep’s visual cards and low-friction capture but wants notes to stay local. Notes are stored on the Android device by default rather than sent to a native cloud service. That makes the app usable offline and gives you direct control over the data, but it also makes your backup and multi-device plan your responsibility.

What feels familiar

The card layout, color coding, checklists, and attachment support map naturally to grocery lists, short reminders, receipts, and reference snippets. Rich-text formatting adds control when a plain Keep card is too limited. Configurable backup frequency and automatic trash deletion are practical touches: you can decide how often copies are made and avoid an indefinitely growing deleted-notes bin.

Where the trade-off appears

There is no native cloud synchronization by default. If you need the same note on two Android devices, Syncthing-Fork can provide optional synchronization, but setting it up is a technical step rather than a switch you flip inside a hosted account. Test a small, disposable notebook first and confirm that edits made on either device propagate correctly before trusting the arrangement with important notes.

Pick NotallyX when your priority order is speed, local control, and a Keep-like interface. Pick another app if you need a polished desktop client, automatic web access, or a provider-managed recovery path without configuring synchronization yourself.

Simplenote: the simplest free cross-platform option

Simplenote is designed for text-first note taking. It is free, synchronizes across major platforms, and avoids the setup work associated with local-only files. Tags replace Keep-style labels, so a useful migration starts by deciding on a small, consistent tag vocabulary such as work, personal, and reference rather than recreating dozens of one-off labels.

Useful capabilities

  • Markdown: Format headings, lists, links, and emphasis without a heavy editor.
  • Version history: Revisit earlier versions when an edit removes something you still need.
  • Collaboration: Share a note for joint editing instead of passing around copies.
  • Web publishing: Turn a note into a public web page when that is appropriate.

Important limitations

Simplenote does not provide rich media support, so it is a poor fit for photo-heavy capture, scanned paperwork, or notes that depend on embedded files. It also lacks end-to-end encryption. Synchronization is convenient, but convenience is not the same as a zero-knowledge privacy model. Use it for ordinary text where free, broad access matters more than encrypted content or attachments.

Notesnook: encrypted notes without giving up a rich editor

Notesnook targets the gap between a basic text pad and a full personal notebook. Its zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption is the central reason to choose it: the service is designed so note contents are protected from provider access, while synchronization keeps the same encrypted notes available on multiple devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For documents, not just snippets

The editor supports rich text, media attachments, embedded items, and tables. Notebooks and tags provide two ways to organize material, while reminders and pinning keep active items visible. Focus mode reduces interface distractions when you are writing rather than collecting quick snippets. Those features make Notesnook suitable for meeting records, study material, project briefs, and private journals that would feel cramped in a minimalist app.

Plan carefully before importing

A free tier is available, while paid plans unlock additional capabilities. The exact limits and prices can change, so check the current plan page immediately before subscribing or moving a large archive. During migration, import a representative sample that includes formatting and attachments; confirm that both survive on Android and on your other devices before deleting the originals.

Joplin: open-source structure for research and long-form notes

Joplin is built for people who have outgrown a flat stream of cards. Its notebook and sub-notebook hierarchy, tags, Markdown editor, rich-text view, attachments, to-dos, document scanning, and plugin system support a personal knowledge base as well as ordinary notes.

Devices and capture routes

The official installation documentation lists Android and iOS apps, Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop applications, terminal clients, synchronized interfaces, and a web clipper for pages and screenshots. That range matters if your day moves between a phone, a work computer, and a command-line or browser-based capture workflow.

Synchronization choices

Joplin Cloud is the official paid synchronization route. You can instead use another supported cloud or a personal-cloud service, which gives you more control but also adds configuration and maintenance. Decide whether you want a managed service or self-managed storage before importing the full archive; switching later is possible, but it is easier to establish one reliable path first.

Who should choose it

Choose Joplin when ownership, open-source code, and a durable hierarchy matter more than the instant simplicity of Keep. It is especially well suited to research collections, clipped web material, and notes that need attachments and sub-notebooks. The additional menus and Markdown concepts are a reasonable price for that structure, but they make Joplin less ideal for someone who only wants a two-line reminder.

Obsidian: a local-first knowledge base with optional encrypted sync

Obsidian stores notes in a local vault and works offline without requiring an account. That file-based approach is attractive if you want direct access to your data and the ability to keep using the app during a connectivity outage. It is more powerful and less immediately simple than Keep because its strength is the relationship between notes, not just the individual card.

What the optional Sync service adds

Obsidian Sync provides encrypted synchronization, version history, selective file sync, recovery, and shared vaults across Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official price listed for Sync is $4 per month. Treat that figure as the service price shown by Obsidian’s current product information; taxes, billing interval, and regional presentation can affect what you pay.

  • 【Audio Recording】 Records audio simultaneously while you write, allowing you to sync your notes with the corresponding audio for context. and Clicking on the notes allows you to locate and play back the corresponding audio content.

Learning curve and fit

Obsidian rewards users who are willing to build a system of linked notes and folders. Start with a small vault, create a few stable folder or tag conventions, and learn the recovery workflow before importing years of material. If you only need colored cards and checkboxes, its extra concepts may slow you down. If you want a durable knowledge base that remains readable as ordinary local files, the trade-off is compelling.

Standard Notes: encryption-first text storage

Standard Notes puts zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption at the center and synchronizes encrypted notes across devices. Tags and folders provide basic organization, while app lock, two-factor authentication, and password-protected notes add account and note-level safeguards for sensitive material.

Editor tiers

The free editor is intentionally basic. Paid plans add richer editors, Markdown, attachments, backups, and extended history. Verify the current prices and the exact features in each tier before subscribing because plan contents can change. If your archive is mostly short, sensitive text, the basic editor may be enough; if it includes files or formatted documents, budget for the tier that supports those needs.

Best use cases

Standard Notes fits passwords-in-context, private journaling, personal records, and other text where confidentiality is more important than visual formatting. It is less suitable as a media scrapbook or a highly collaborative workspace. Keep your recovery credentials in a separate secure location: encryption protects the data, but losing the credentials can make recovery impossible.

OneNote: the practical choice for a Microsoft-centered workflow

Microsoft positions OneNote as a digital note-taking app with cross-device integration. If you already work in Microsoft 365, Windows, or OneDrive, using the same account and notebook environment can reduce friction more than adopting a completely separate service.

Questions to answer before moving

  • Do you need deep notebook and section hierarchy rather than tags?
  • Will handwriting, images, audio, or other media be central to your notes?
  • Will several people edit the same notebook?
  • How much OneDrive storage does your existing account provide, and what happens if that allowance changes?
  • Are you comfortable making a Microsoft account the dependency for access and recovery?

OneNote is a workflow decision rather than a privacy-first recommendation. Compare its notebook depth, handwriting and media handling, collaboration behavior, storage limits, and account dependence against the simpler or more local alternatives above.

Why privacy is driving people away from Keep

In Android Authority’s April 12, 2026 poll of 797 respondents, 45% said they were leaving Google Keep for security reasons. Fourteen percent cited other reasons, 25% were staying with Keep, and 16% said they did not use Keep. The result is a useful signal, not a universal survey of Android owners: the respondents were self-selected readers, and the poll does not establish that one alternative is objectively safer for every threat model.

Translate “privacy” into a concrete requirement before switching. Local-only storage limits a provider’s access but makes backups and device loss your problem. End-to-end encryption protects content from provider inspection when implemented correctly, but account recovery and endpoint security still matter. A synchronized service may be the best practical choice if the alternative is an unmaintained manual backup that you never test.

A migration plan that avoids lost notes

  1. Inventory the archive. Separate plain text, checklists, images, scans, audio, and shared notes. Record which items are time-sensitive or irreplaceable.
  2. Choose the destination by data type. Text-only archives can move to Simplenote or Standard Notes; attachments and hierarchy point toward Notesnook or Joplin; local files point toward NotallyX or Obsidian.
  3. Export from Keep before changing anything. Keep the original account intact. Save the export in at least two locations, including one that is not the phone you are replacing.
  4. Run a pilot import. Select a small set containing formatting, a checklist, an image, and a long note. Confirm what imports cleanly and what needs manual repair.
  5. Test every device. Sign in or open the vault on each Android, desktop, or web client you use. Edit the same test note from two devices and verify the resulting history.
  6. Confirm offline behavior. Turn off connectivity, create and edit a note, then reconnect. Check whether the app queues changes, creates duplicates, or requires a manual action.
  7. Set a backup and recovery routine. For local-first apps, schedule backups and practice restoring one. For encrypted services, store recovery information separately and test the account-recovery process.
  8. Only then retire Keep. Keep the original archive read-only for a defined period. Delete it after you have verified imports, attachments, sharing, and synchronization.

How to choose in five minutes

Use this sequence when two apps still look similar:

  1. If the note must remain on the device by default, choose NotallyX for cards or Obsidian for a linked vault.
  2. If you need free, automatic text synchronization and no attachments, choose Simplenote.
  3. If encrypted synchronization and rich formatting are both essential, compare Notesnook with Standard Notes; the former is the richer editor, while the latter is the more encryption-first text workspace.
  4. If you need open-source notebooks, scanning, plugins, and multiple sync providers, choose Joplin.
  5. If your collaborators and files already live in Microsoft 365, evaluate OneNote before creating a separate account.

Before committing, check the current plan limits, export format, attachment handling, and recovery terms for the app you select. Those details determine whether an alternative remains useful after the first week of enthusiasm.
