Best Google Discover Alternatives for a Personalized News Feed (2026)

Google News is the closest documented alternative when you want a news-first feed, while the MSN feed in Edge and Microsoft’s apps is better suited to readers who want explicit topic and publisher controls across devices. Before switching, check Discover again: Google added publisher and creator following in 2025 and announced natural-language controls for topics and links on August 20, 2026. Availability still depends on country, language, account, and rollout stage.

No service is objectively best for everyone. Your decision comes down to how much control you want over sources, whether you prefer news-only coverage or a broader recommendation stream, which devices you use, and how comfortable you are with shared regional stories, ads, or non-news cards.

Quick comparison

Service Best for Source and topic controls How personalization works Availability and trade-offs
Google News Readers who want a dedicated news experience Follow interests and individual sources; adjust News settings Selected interests and sources, plus activity from Google services and YouTube Personalized “For you” and other sections, but some stories remain common to people sharing a language and region; features vary by edition
Microsoft MSN / Edge feed People who want visible controls and cross-device continuity Choose topics and publishers, follow or block them, and react to individual cards Explicit choices and card feedback; Microsoft-account sign-in can sync personalization Available on MSN.com, in Edge, and in mobile apps; Edge’s guide says ads can appear as tiles
Google Discover (baseline) Readers who prefer a general-interest recommendation stream Follow publishers and creators, provide topic or link feedback, and use newer natural-language controls where available Google account, device activity, and settings can influence recommendations Found in the Google app, mobile web, and some home screens; controls continue to roll out
Independent RSS or news readers People who want a source-built reading list Potentially extensive source control, depending on the product Depends entirely on the product and your configuration No current products, platforms, or business models are specified, so verify those details before choosing one

For a straightforward choice, start with Google News if “news” should be the center of the experience. Choose MSN/Edge if you want to tune topics and publishers directly and move the same feed between a browser and phone.

Check what Google Discover can do now

Switching only makes sense if Discover’s current controls do not solve your problem. Google announced the ability to follow publishers and creators in September 2025. On August 20, 2026, it announced natural-language requests that let users ask for more or less of particular topics or links. Google says rollout and availability can vary, so you may not see every control on every account or device.

The newer controls address two common reasons people look for an alternative: too little influence over sources and difficulty correcting a feed that has drifted. Use the feedback control on an unwanted card, follow sources you trust, and try a plain-language request for a topic you want more or less often. If those actions still leave you with a broad mix of entertainment, shopping, or other non-news items, a dedicated news service is a more meaningful change than another launcher or home-screen widget.

Google reported that more than 600,000 unique sources had been selected for Preferred Sources in its August 20, 2026 announcement. That is a company-reported count, not an independent measure of readership, quality, or satisfaction. Google’s product leader Mrinalini Loew described the goal as: “By letting you refine your tastes in real time, Discover can connect you with content that genuinely matches what you care about right now.” Treat that as Google’s characterization of the feature, not an independently tested performance claim. Read the September 2025 Discover announcement and the August 20, 2026 announcement for the exact rollout statements.

Google News: the closest news-first replacement

Why it fits a news-focused reader

Google News is built around publishers, topics, and news sections rather than the wider mixture that can appear in Discover. Its “For you” area combines stories selected for your interests with broader coverage. That makes it the most direct substitute when your complaint is that Discover does not feel sufficiently like a news feed.

Google documents personalization through the interests and sources you select, together with activity from Google services and YouTube. The service is therefore neither a purely manual RSS list nor a completely opaque algorithm. Your explicit follows matter, but your prior activity can still influence what appears.

How to tune Google News

  1. Open Google News in the web or mobile app available for your account and go to the personalized “For you” area.
  2. Choose interests. Follow subjects that represent the coverage you actually want, such as local government, science, or a specific sport. Use the service’s topic controls to remove interests that no longer fit.
  3. Follow sources. Add publishers you trust so their reporting has a clear place in the feed. Following a source does not mean every story from it will be shown; relevance and regional availability still affect the mix.
  4. Correct individual recommendations. Use the menu on a story to indicate that you are not interested or that you want less of a topic. Give the service consistent signals for a few sessions instead of changing every setting at once.
  5. Review settings after travel or account changes. Language, region, and activity from other Google services can alter the selection, so check them if the feed suddenly looks unfamiliar.

Google’s Google News Help documentation explains the service’s personalization and settings. The exact controls and section names can differ by country and edition.

The important limitation: not every story is personalized

Google says some coverage remains common to users who share a language and region. This shared layer is useful for major events and public-interest stories, but it means Google News cannot be reduced to a private list of only your chosen sources. If you need every item to come from a hand-built set of feeds, confirm that the service’s blend is acceptable before abandoning your current reader.

Who should choose Google News

  • Choose it when your priority is a recognizable news destination rather than a general recommendation page.
  • Choose it when you want both explicit follows and algorithmic discovery of related reporting.
  • Expect some common regional and language-based coverage, even after you personalize interests.
  • Check feature availability for your edition; Google does not expose every option uniformly worldwide.

Microsoft MSN and the Edge feed: explicit controls across devices

Why it is a strong alternative

Microsoft’s MSN feed gives you more visible, direct controls over topics and publishers. You can follow or block them, and you can react to individual cards. That is useful when the main problem with Discover is not the lack of stories but the difficulty of telling the system exactly what to stop showing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feed is available on MSN.com, in Microsoft Edge, and through mobile apps. Microsoft says signing in with a Microsoft account can carry personalization across devices. That makes it practical for someone who reads on a desktop browser during work and on a phone later without rebuilding the same topic list.

How to configure MSN or Edge

  1. Sign in before customizing. Use the same Microsoft account on MSN.com, Edge, and the mobile app if you want choices and feedback to follow you.
  2. Open the feed personalization controls. Select the topics and publishers you want to follow. Start with a small set that reflects your real priorities rather than selecting every suggested category.
  3. Block unwanted topics or publishers. Blocking is more decisive than repeatedly skipping cards. Use it for subjects or sources you do not want in this feed at all.
  4. React to cards as you read. Give direct feedback when a recommendation is irrelevant. Consistent reactions help the feed distinguish a temporary curiosity from a standing interest.
  5. Check the same account on each device. If a phone and browser show different results, verify that both are signed in and that the app is using the account whose preferences you edited.

Microsoft’s MSN support page documents following and blocking publishers and topics. Its personalization FAQ describes how an account can retain preferences, while the Edge feed guide covers feed customization.

Expect a broader content mix and tile ads

MSN is a broad portal rather than a narrowly defined newspaper front page. Depending on the surface and your settings, cards can include more than conventional reporting. Microsoft’s Edge guide also documents that ads can appear as tiles. If you want a quiet, publication-only reading list, that presentation may be a drawback even though the controls are clear.

Who should choose MSN or Edge

  • Choose it when publisher and topic blocking are central to your decision.
  • Choose it when you read on Windows, MSN.com, and a phone and want one account to carry your preferences.
  • Expect a broader portal-style mix than Google News and account for tile ads in the Edge feed.
  • Use card feedback actively; the service is designed for ongoing tuning rather than a one-time setup.

Google News versus MSN/Edge

Question Google News MSN / Edge
Do I want a dedicated news destination? Yes. The product is organized around news sections and a personalized “For you” area. Less narrowly focused; it is a broader feed available through Microsoft’s portal, browser, and apps.
How much source control is documented? Follow interests and sources, then adjust recommendations. Follow or block publishers and topics, and react to cards.
What informs personalization? Your selected News settings plus activity from Google services and YouTube. Your explicit choices and feedback; Microsoft-account sign-in can sync the experience.
Will every story be unique to me? No. Some coverage is shared for users in the same language and region. Not guaranteed; the feed remains algorithmic and can include broad portal content.
Where can I read it? Google News web and mobile experiences, subject to edition availability. MSN.com, Microsoft Edge, and mobile apps.
What presentation issue should I consider? Regional and language-based shared coverage may dilute a tightly curated list. Microsoft documents ads as tiles in the Edge feed.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Define “personalized.” If it means “show me more reporting about my interests,” either service can fit. If it means “let me ban a publisher or topic immediately,” MSN/Edge has the clearer documented control.
  2. Decide whether non-news cards are acceptable. Google News is the more news-centered option. MSN’s portal-style feed can be broader, which may be useful or distracting.
  3. List your reading devices. MSN explicitly spans MSN.com, Edge, and mobile apps, with Microsoft-account synchronization. Google News availability and controls vary by edition, so check the devices and region you actually use.
  4. Choose your tolerance for shared coverage. Google News intentionally keeps some language- and region-wide stories in the mix. That is valuable for major events but unsuitable if you want a completely private source list.
  5. Check the visual experience. If tile ads would interrupt your reading, the Edge guide’s warning is a reason to favor Google News or another service you have verified as less commercial.

A practical switching plan

Run the two leading options side by side for several days instead of judging either one after a single session. Keep your existing Discover setup while you configure the alternative; otherwise you will not know whether an improvement came from the new service or from better feedback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down five topics and five publishers you genuinely want.
  2. Configure those items in Google News and, separately, in MSN/Edge.
  3. For each service, block or remove one recurring subject you dislike and record how quickly it disappears.
  4. Read from the same devices and account state you normally use. A signed-out browser can produce a different experience from a signed-in one.
  5. After several sessions, compare the ratio of desired reporting to unrelated cards, the ease of correcting mistakes, and whether the available sections match your routine.

This is a decision aid, not a measured performance ranking. There is no independent, audited accuracy or satisfaction leaderboard establishing one of these feeds as universally superior.

Common problems and fixes

The feed keeps showing a topic you rejected

Give the service repeated, consistent negative feedback and remove the related interest or publisher. In MSN/Edge, use the documented block control rather than only skipping cards. In Google News, review both selected interests and activity-linked recommendations; an old interest elsewhere in your Google account can continue to influence suggestions.

My phone and computer do not match

Confirm that both devices use the same account and that the app is current. MSN’s cross-device behavior depends on Microsoft-account sign-in. Google News settings can also differ by edition, language, or account, so verify those before assuming synchronization is broken.

I only want trusted sources

Follow specific publishers and use source-level controls first. Google News still includes shared regional coverage, and MSN remains a broad feed, so neither should be described as a pure source list. If strict source ownership is non-negotiable, investigate a current RSS or source-built reader separately and verify its platform support, update schedule, and business model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feed contains too much advertising or non-news material

MSN’s Edge guide says ads can appear as tiles, and the portal can carry broader content than a traditional news section. Try Google News if a more news-centered layout is the priority. If neither presentation fits, a verified independent reader may be the better category, but product capabilities change and should be checked before you move.

Bottom line

Start with Google News for the closest news-first replacement for Discover. Pick MSN/Edge when explicit publisher and topic controls, card feedback, and cross-device access matter more than a narrowly news-only presentation. Revisit Discover’s newer following and natural-language controls before switching, because the gap between Discover and its alternatives is smaller in 2026 than it was previously.
