Best Google Antigravity Settings for Faster, Safer AI-Assisted Coding

For most developers, start with Default on macOS or Linux, leave Terminal Sandbox enabled, limit each project to the folders it actually needs, and add only narrow Allow rules for commands you understand. Use Request Review for production, sensitive, or unfamiliar repositories. Reserve Turbo for disposable environments because it removes isolation and restrictions.

On Windows, use Proceed in Sandbox for routine work and Request Review when the repository or command risk is high. The safest speed improvements come from reducing repetitive approvals with precise rules—not from giving the agent unrestricted access.

What the settings control

Google Antigravity is an agent-first development environment in which agents can plan, execute, and verify work across the editor, terminal, and browser. Its permission controls determine how much autonomy the agent has, where commands can run, which files it can reach, whether network activity needs approval, and when you must review generated artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These controls are independent. Choosing a permission preset does not replace project scoping, worktree selection, artifact review, or network policy. Configure each boundary deliberately so a fast workflow does not become an unnecessarily broad one.

Best baseline configuration

  1. Permission preset: Choose Default on macOS or Linux.
  2. Terminal Sandbox: Keep it enabled for normal development.
  3. Project folders: Add only the repository and assets required for the task.
  4. Rules: Deny destructive commands and sensitive paths; ask for operations that need human judgment; allow only narrow, repeatable commands such as a known lint or test script.
  5. Artifact Review: Enable it when working in an unfamiliar codebase or whenever generated files need an explicit check before being written.
  6. Sandbox Network Access: Leave it off unless the task genuinely requires network access.
  7. Conversation isolation: Use a Git worktree for an isolated branch or parallel task directory.

This setup preserves sandbox isolation while avoiding approval prompts for routine, understood work. It also keeps the agent’s visible surface area smaller than the entire machine.

Permission presets compared

Preset or mode Command autonomy Isolation File-system reach Review frequency Best fit
Default (macOS/Linux) Commands run without prompting inside the Terminal Sandbox; operations outside it require approval. Sandbox enabled. Workspace and temporary directories are available; other locations require approval. Routine in-sandbox commands are quiet; boundary crossings prompt. Everyday development in a repository you understand.
Request Review (macOS/Linux) Every terminal command requires approval. Sandbox is off. File access is limited to the workspace under the documented preset. Highest command-by-command review. Production, sensitive, unfamiliar, or high-impact repositories.
Turbo (macOS/Linux) Commands run without prompting. No isolation or restrictions. Full filesystem read/write access. Minimal interactive review. Disposable environments only.
Proceed in Sandbox (Windows) Uses the Windows sandbox-oriented execution path for routine tasks. Sandbox mode enabled. Keep access outside the project restricted with the separate file-access control. Prompts depend on the command and configured controls. Normal Windows development.
Request Review (Windows) Use the review-oriented command setting for high-risk work. Configure Terminal Sandbox separately. Keep non-workspace access restricted. More frequent approval before execution. High-risk or unfamiliar Windows repositories.

The Windows interface exposes separate controls for terminal command auto-execution, non-workspace file access, and Terminal Sandbox mode, so do not assume that selecting one option configures all three.

Default: the practical starting point

Default balances autonomy and containment. Commands that remain inside the Terminal Sandbox can run without interrupting you, while commands that need host resources or leave the sandbox require approval. The agent can read and write the workspace and temporary directories; access to other locations requires approval.

Use this mode when the repository is known, the project folder is narrowly defined, and you have rules blocking clearly destructive actions. It is usually faster than approving every command while retaining a boundary around the host system.

Request Review: the high-risk choice

Request Review turns off the sandbox and requires approval for every terminal command. Under the documented preset, file access remains limited to the workspace. This is appropriate when a command may alter production code, handle credentials, migrate data, or affect a repository you have not audited.

The cost is interruption: even harmless commands need an explicit decision. That friction is intentional when the consequence of a mistaken command is greater than the time saved by automation.

Turbo: unrestricted and unsuitable for ordinary work

Turbo runs commands without prompting and removes isolation and restrictions, granting full filesystem read/write access. Google’s documented behavior makes it the least protective option. Use it only in a disposable virtual machine, temporary checkout, or other environment where destroying or exposing the host would not matter.

Do not use Turbo as a general performance setting for a valuable repository. It does not provide an authoritative productivity advantage, and it eliminates the approval boundaries that catch unexpected commands.

Set rule precedence deliberately

Antigravity evaluates rules in this order: Deny > Ask > Allow. Google defines the outcomes as follows: Deny blocks an action immediately, Ask pauses for explicit approval, and Allow permits the action without prompting.

Deny rules for hard stops

Use Deny for destructive commands, credential stores, deployment controls, and directories that the project never needs. A Deny rule should cover an action even if a broader Allow rule would otherwise match it. This lets you keep a useful automation rule without exposing a sensitive path.

  • Block commands that delete or overwrite large portions of the filesystem.
  • Block access to credential, key, and secret directories that are unrelated to the project.
  • Block production deployment or database-destruction operations unless a separate, deliberate process handles them.

Keep the denied scope concrete. A vague policy that blocks every shell command can make the agent unusable; a narrow policy that blocks a sensitive path or destructive operation is easier to audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask rules for decisions that need context

Use Ask when the operation may be legitimate but its impact depends on the task. Examples include writing outside the project, accessing a host resource, using the network, or running a migration. The prompt gives you a chance to check the command, target, and expected result before execution.

Allow rules for repeatable, low-risk commands

Allow only commands you can describe precisely and run repeatedly, such as a repository’s known lint or test script. Prefer a specific executable and argument pattern over a broad shell allowance. Review the rule later if the script changes, because an Allow decision applies to what the command does now—not necessarily what a future version will do.

Keep the Terminal Sandbox enabled

The Terminal Sandbox is an isolated environment for agent terminal commands. Under Default, sandboxed commands are restricted to the workspace and temporary directories and have no network access by default. A command that needs host resources or network access prompts for approval unless an explicit rule covers it.

How to configure it

  1. Open Antigravity’s settings and find the agent permission controls.
  2. Select Default on macOS or Linux, or the Windows sandbox-oriented mode for routine work.
  3. Confirm that Terminal Sandbox is enabled.
  4. Run a small, harmless command from the project, such as the repository’s version or status check.
  5. When a command requests a host resource or network access, inspect the requested target before approving it.

If a build needs a package download, a remote API, or another host capability, approve only that operation or create a narrowly scoped rule. Do not disable the sandbox merely because one step needs an exception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit project folders and use worktrees

Project folders define the material the agent needs to see. Add the repository, generated assets, and configuration directories required for the task; leave unrelated personal, client, and system folders outside the project scope.

Narrow the visible surface

  • Choose the smallest parent directory that contains the code being changed.
  • Keep secrets, unrelated repositories, and personal documents outside the configured project folders.
  • When a tool generates files elsewhere, decide whether that location is genuinely required before granting access.
  • Recheck folder scope when switching repositories; a setting suitable for one project may be excessive for another.

Use a Git worktree for isolation

Antigravity’s Settings page supports Local or Worktree conversations. A Git worktree gives an isolated branch or parallel task directory, so an agent can experiment without modifying the checkout you use for release work. It is particularly useful when several tasks run at once or when you want an easy discard path for generated changes.

A worktree does not replace permission rules. It isolates the project directory, but commands can still be risky if you grant broad host, network, or filesystem access.

Control artifacts and network access separately

Artifact Review

Artifact Review controls whether Antigravity prompts before generated artifacts, such as code files, are written to disk. Enable it for unfamiliar codebases, generated migrations, security-sensitive changes, or any workflow in which you want to inspect output before it becomes a file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a trusted repository with a well-understood generator, you may choose a less interruptive setting, but still inspect the resulting diff. Artifact approval is about the write event; it does not prove that the generated code is correct.

Sandbox Network Access

Sandbox Network Access determines whether commands running in the sandbox may use the network. Keep it disabled by default. Turn it on only when the task requires package retrieval, a remote service, or another clearly identified network operation, and keep the permission as narrow as the interface allows.

Network approval and file approval solve different problems. A command can be safe to run locally but risky when it can upload data, and a generated file can be risky even when no network is involved.

Windows settings need separate decisions

Windows presents independent controls for terminal command auto-execution, non-workspace file access, and Terminal Sandbox mode. Configure all three rather than relying on one preset label to imply the others.

  1. Choose Proceed in Sandbox for routine repository work.
  2. Keep non-workspace file access restricted so the agent cannot browse unrelated drives or directories.
  3. Use Request Review for high-risk work, then inspect each command before allowing it.
  4. Enable the Terminal Sandbox when the task does not require host-level capabilities.
  5. Grant a specific exception only after checking why the command needs it.

The same principle applies on Windows as elsewhere: speed comes from predictable, narrow permissions, while safety comes from preserving boundaries.

Make coding faster without removing safeguards

Permission prompts usually become expensive when rules are too broad to be trusted or too narrow to be useful. Improve throughput in this order:

  1. Define the project correctly. A narrow folder reduces irrelevant file discovery and prevents avoidable outside-folder prompts.
  2. Keep routine commands inside the sandbox. Most editing, local tests, and linting should not need host access.
  3. Allow known checks. Add a precise Allow rule for the repository’s lint or test script after verifying what it runs.
  4. Separate exceptional work. Use Ask for network calls, migrations, deployment steps, and writes outside the project.
  5. Use a worktree for parallel tasks. Isolation reduces the need to stop and restore a shared checkout.
  6. Review artifacts in unfamiliar projects. Catch unexpected generated files before they spread through the repository.

Do not measure success by the number of suppressed prompts. A faster workflow is one in which routine, low-risk actions are automatic and consequential actions remain visible.

A verification workflow before accepting changes

Antigravity’s task and artifact model supports a verification-oriented process. Ask the agent to make its reasoning operationally visible rather than accepting a vague “done.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. State the plan. Ask which files it expects to change, which commands it will run, and what result will confirm success.
  2. Run the smallest relevant checks. Start with the focused test or lint command, then expand only when the result or project conventions justify it.
  3. Inspect the diff. Confirm that changed files match the plan and that generated artifacts do not contain secrets, unrelated formatting churn, or unexpected dependencies.
  4. Review command output. Check exit status, warnings, test counts, build output, and any skipped checks.
  5. Verify boundaries. Confirm that no command accessed an unapproved path or network resource.
  6. Summarize before merging. Require a concise account of changes, checks run, failures, and unresolved risks.

This process improves reliability without pretending that a permission preset guarantees correct code. Google publishes no authoritative percentage showing that one preset makes developers a specific amount faster.

Choose settings by repository risk

Repository situation Recommended mode Additional controls Reason
Personal prototype in a disposable checkout Default; Turbo only in a disposable environment Keep project scope narrow; allow known local checks. Routine autonomy is useful, but unrestricted host access is still unnecessary unless the environment can be discarded.
Active production application Request Review Artifact Review on; Deny deployment and destructive paths; network off unless required. Every terminal command deserves an explicit decision.
Unfamiliar open-source repository Default with strong Ask and Deny rules, or Request Review while auditing Artifact Review on; project folder limited to the checkout; network restricted. You do not yet know what scripts or generators do.
Parallel feature work Default Use a Git worktree; allow only verified tests and lint commands. Sandboxed automation can remain quick while branch changes stay isolated.
Windows repository with host-specific tooling Proceed in Sandbox for routine work; Request Review for high-risk steps Configure command auto-execution, non-workspace access, and sandbox mode independently. Windows exposes these boundaries as separate controls.

Troubleshoot common permission problems

The agent asks for approval constantly

Check whether the command is leaving the sandbox, touching a location outside the configured project, or requesting network access. If the operation is routine and fully understood, replace repeated approvals with a narrow Allow rule. Do not respond by switching to Turbo.

A build fails because it cannot reach the network

Keep the sandbox enabled and inspect the request. If the build genuinely needs package retrieval or a remote service, enable Sandbox Network Access or approve that operation according to your policy. After the dependency is available, turn the broader access back off if the task no longer needs it.

The agent cannot read a required file

First verify that the file belongs in the project scope. If it is in a temporary directory, the sandbox may already permit it. If it is elsewhere, approve only that location or add the smallest necessary project folder; do not expose an entire drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A generated file appears without review

Enable Artifact Review and repeat the task in a clean worktree. Then inspect the diff and remove any unrelated output before continuing.

A rule appears ineffective

Check precedence. A Deny rule overrides Ask and Allow, while an Ask rule overrides Allow. Review the exact command or path pattern and verify that the rule matches the operation you intended—not a broader or different command.

You need a command that the sandbox cannot support

Use Request Review or approve the specific host-resource request rather than disabling all isolation. Record why the exception is needed and return to the baseline mode for subsequent work.

Practical checklist

  • Is the repository disposable, trusted, or production-critical?
  • Are project folders limited to the files the task needs?
  • Is Terminal Sandbox enabled for routine commands?
  • Are destructive operations and sensitive paths denied?
  • Are Ask rules used for migrations, deployment, host access, and network activity?
  • Are Allow rules limited to verified, repeatable scripts?
  • Is Artifact Review enabled when generated files need inspection?
  • Is Sandbox Network Access off unless the task requires it?
  • Would a Git worktree make rollback or parallel work safer?
  • Did you inspect the plan, diff, command output, and test results before accepting changes?
