The right choice depends on the countries and languages you need, how quickly articles must appear, whether you need historical data or full text, what your licence permits, and whether you need enrichment such as story clustering or entity extraction. The 12 services below fit different jobs, from a simple headlines widget to long-term event research and enterprise intelligence.
Coverage counts and prices are reported figures from comparisons updated in 2026, not results from a common benchmark. Confirm current documentation, quotas, licensing and commercial terms with each provider before launch.

What a global news API actually provides
A news API is a structured data service that lets software request stories, headlines, metadata or events instead of scraping individual websites. A response may include a title, URL, publication time, source, language, country, image, excerpt, author, categories and sometimes article text. Some products add semantic search, duplicate detection, entity resolution, sentiment or event timelines.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →NewsAPI.org describes its service as “a simple HTTP REST API for searching and retrieving live articles from all over the web.” That description is useful, but it does not mean every provider offers the same coverage, latency, archive or rights. “Global” can mean many countries, many languages, a large number of indexed domains, or an event database assembled from public reporting. Ask which meaning matters for your application.

How to choose without being misled by source counts
1. Define the geography and language test
Write down the countries, regions, scripts and languages your users actually read. A provider claiming 200 countries may still have thin local reporting in the one market that matters to you. Test representative queries for national, regional and local outlets, and inspect the language and country fields returned. Check whether “source” means a publisher domain, a feed, an edition or an indexed page.
2. Decide between live monitoring and historical research
A breaking-news dashboard values low latency, predictable polling limits and duplicate suppression. A research tool may value years of archive, stable pagination and reproducible query results. GDELT’s reported archive begins on January 1, 1979 and updates every 15 minutes, making it attractive for event analysis; it is not equivalent to a licensed archive of article bodies. NewsAPI.org’s Everything endpoint is reported to search the previous five years, while Event Registry is reported to reach back to 2014 and Webz.io to 2008. Treat those as stated capabilities, then verify retention and query restrictions for your plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Separate links, excerpts and full text
Many APIs return a link, headline and short description while the publisher retains the article. A product that advertises “full content” may still restrict storage, display, redistribution, indexing or machine-learning use. Ask four separate questions: Does the response contain the text? May you cache it? May you show it to end users? May you use it to train, fine-tune or ground an AI system? API authentication does not grant those rights.
4. Price the workload, not the plan name
Estimate requests per minute, average pages per request, date ranges, retries, languages and the number of users. Credit systems may count each result, source, query or enrichment operation differently. NewsData.io’s reported 200-credit daily free tier can produce a different number of usable articles depending on the query. Event Registry can consume more tokens as archive range and article volume grow. Webz.io distinguishes search charges from feed costs, so model those separately.
5. Decide how much enrichment you should buy
Story clustering can turn ten reports about one event into one record with supporting sources. Entity resolution can normalize a company or person across spelling variants. Sentiment and categories can save a machine-learning pipeline, but they add cost and may not match your editorial definitions. If your app only needs a chronological list of headlines, a basic REST feed is easier to operate and audit.
6. Check operational support
For production, verify rate limits, status notices, service-level commitments, authentication rotation, data deletion procedures, regional hosting requirements and a named escalation route. A free tier may be excellent for a prototype yet unsuitable for a public launch because of delay, quotas or non-commercial wording.

Detailed guide to each API
NewsAPI.org: the straightforward general-purpose choice
NewsAPI.org offers Everything search and Top Headlines endpoints. Documentation says Everything searches more than 150,000 sources across the previous five years. Search parameters include keywords or phrases, date ranges, source domains and language; headline requests can be filtered by country, category and publisher.
The reported Developer plan is free for development and testing and carries a 24-hour delay. The reported Business plan starts at $449 per month. Those figures come from the 2026 comparison and can change. The main technical question is content depth: if your interface needs the complete article rather than a title, URL and excerpt, inspect the returned fields and licence before committing.
NewsData.io: wide geographic and language reach
NewsData.io is reported to cover 102,000 sources in 206 countries and 89 languages. Its reported free tier provides 200 credits per day, with delayed and truncated content. Paid plans add archive and full-content options.
Use it when country and language breadth matter more than advanced event intelligence. Build a small usage model first: run your real query mix for several days, record credits consumed and count unique, relevant articles. Do not assume one credit always equals one article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGNews: a compact search/headlines service
GNews is reported to index 80,000 sources across 71 countries and 41 languages, with archive coverage beginning in 2020. The free tier is described as non-commercial and intended for development; paid access with full text is reported from €49.99 per month.
It can suit a small application that needs a simple search and headline workflow. The comparison notes limited source-specific filtering, so confirm that you can constrain results to the publishers and domains your editorial process requires.
Mediastack: inexpensive entry point
Mediastack uses a single REST endpoint and is reported to cover roughly 7,500 sources, more than 50 countries and 13 languages. The comparison lists a delayed free tier and commercial plans from a reported $24.99 per month.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Its lower listed entry price may appeal to a modest feed, but the trade-off is narrower language coverage and less enrichment than several alternatives. Validate local-source quality and the exact commercial allowance rather than choosing on price alone.

Event Registry / NewsAPI.ai: event and NLP data
Event Registry groups coverage of the same real-world development and adds entity, category and sentiment metadata. The comparison reports 150,000 outlets, more than 50 languages and archive coverage from 2014, with paid plans from a reported $90 per month.
This model is useful for dashboards that need one event record with related articles, or for analysts who would otherwise build clustering and classification themselves. Ask how archive queries, language processing and article volume affect token consumption, and whether the supplied sentiment or categories fit your policy.
Webz.io: broad web retrieval
Webz.io is reported to cover 300,000 sites and more than 170 languages, with an archive from 2008. Its News Search API returns relevant excerpts for retrieval applications; other endpoints provide broader structured feeds and adjacent web content.
It is a candidate for multilingual retrieval, monitoring and AI search pipelines. Because pricing is usage-based, distinguish the search API’s per-call or per-result charges from feed costs. Define a maximum result count, cache policy and retry strategy before estimating monthly spend.

NewsCatcher: monitoring with structured full text
NewsCatcher focuses on structured full-text news, entity resolution and localized coverage. The comparison reports a seven-day trial and sales-led, quote-based production pricing.
That route is more appropriate for risk, compliance or company monitoring than for a hobby headline page. During evaluation, test entity matching for legal names, subsidiaries and common abbreviations, then ask for written limits on retention, export and commercial display.

Perigon: agents and developer workflows
Perigon highlights story clustering, entity resolution, semantic search and an official MCP server. A personal-use free tier is reported, while commercial plans are reported to begin around $24,000 per year. Startup eligibility and licensing affect the actual route.
It is aimed at teams building agentic or research workflows that need normalized stories rather than raw links. Before selecting it, calculate whether those features replace enough in-house engineering to justify an annual contract and confirm what “commercial” includes for internal tools, customer-facing products and model-assisted features.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →GDELT Project: open event research
GDELT is free and open, reports more than 100 languages and updates every 15 minutes. The comparison places its event archive start at January 1, 1979.
Its data is organized around events and metadata, not a clean, licensed full-text feed. There is no commercial support or service-level agreement reported. It is a strong research option when reproducible event analysis matters and you can handle the learning curve, data normalization and source-link rights yourself.
The Guardian Open Platform: one-publisher depth
The Guardian Open Platform is reported to expose that publisher’s archive from 1999, including full article bodies and topic tagging. A non-commercial developer key is available, while commercial use is separately negotiated.
Choose it when your product specifically needs Guardian content or a deep single-source archive. Do not treat it as a substitute for a multilingual aggregator, and review display, caching and archive terms before building a permanent copy.
New York Times APIs: historical NYT metadata
New York Times APIs are reported to provide archive metadata back to 1851 along with article search, top stories and other read APIs. Access is described as free within request limits and subject to non-commercial restrictions.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
This is valuable for projects centered on that publication’s corpus, historical studies or a branded reading experience. It does not provide broad global-source coverage, so pair it with another service only after checking whether combined licensing permits the intended presentation.
Contify: business intelligence rather than general news
Contify supplies business-focused filtering and tags for companies, people, locations, sentiment and business events, with REST and webhook delivery. Pricing is sales-led.
It fits competitive-intelligence teams tracking firms, markets and executives. A general breaking-news app will usually find its business-only focus and enterprise workflow excessive; ask for a sample taxonomy and webhook limits if your use case is specifically corporate monitoring.
Free tiers: what “free” does and does not mean
A free API tier can be ideal for proving authentication, pagination, caching and UI behavior. It is not automatically suitable for a live product. Common restrictions include a 24-hour or other delay, low daily credits, truncated descriptions, shallow archives, development-only keys, non-commercial wording and no uptime commitment.
Run a launch-readiness checklist before relying on a free plan:
- Confirm whether production traffic and revenue-generating use are permitted.
- Measure delay against your freshness requirement, including weekends and breaking events.
- Record the actual number of unique, usable stories per request or credit.
- Test pagination, duplicate handling and behavior at the rate limit.
- Verify whether storing raw responses or article text is allowed.
- Prepare an upgrade or fallback path before the key reaches its cap.
Licensing and AI use: the questions to put in writing
Terms vary by provider, plan, source and country. A response URL may send users to a publisher while the API provider licenses only indexing and metadata. Full-text availability does not prove redistribution rights. AI applications add another layer: retrieval, prompt inclusion, embedding storage, model training, generated summaries and customer export may each be treated differently.
Ask the provider and, where necessary, the publisher:
- Which fields may be displayed to end users, and for how long?
- May you cache headlines, excerpts, embeddings or article bodies?
- Can data be used for internal search, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning or evaluation?
- What attribution, takedown and deletion process applies?
- Are international transfers, sub-processors or customer exports restricted?
- Does the permission cover your exact plan, tenant type and commercial audience?
Implementation plan before you sign a contract
- Write a workload brief. List target countries and languages, freshness in minutes, archive dates, expected requests, peak traffic, users and required fields.
- Shortlist by data shape. Keep basic search APIs, event-oriented systems, single-publisher archives and business-intelligence feeds in separate groups; they solve different problems.
- Run representative queries. Use the same names, dates, local-language terms and source filters across finalists. Save response samples and note missing fields, duplicates and stale timestamps.
- Calculate effective cost. Include credits, enrichment calls, retries, storage, egress, engineering time and the cost of a second provider for resilience.
- Review rights with counsel or your compliance owner. Archive the plan terms and publisher conditions that were in force when you approved the design.
- Design for failure. Add rate-limit handling, exponential backoff, a circuit breaker, stale-cache behavior, key rotation and a visible source link when an article is unavailable.
- Monitor quality after launch. Track latency, duplicate rate, language mix, empty-query rate, useful-story yield, quota consumption and takedown requests by market.
Which type should you pick?
- Choose a basic general-news API when you need headlines, links and search with minimal data processing. NewsAPI.org, GNews or Mediastack fit this shape, subject to their current terms and coverage tests.
- Choose broad multilingual coverage when country and language diversity are the primary requirement. NewsData.io and Webz.io report the widest geographic or language figures in this comparison; validate the specific markets you serve.
- Choose enrichment when clustering, entity normalization or sentiment saves more engineering than it costs. Event Registry, NewsCatcher and Perigon are designed around those workflows.
- Choose open research data when event history and transparency matter more than licensed article text. GDELT is the distinctive option, provided your team can work with event-oriented data.
- Choose a publisher API when one publication is the product. The Guardian Open Platform and New York Times APIs offer depth in their own archives but are not global aggregators.
- Choose business intelligence only when company and competitive monitoring is the objective. Contify’s focus is narrower than a consumer news feed.
What changed with Google News and Bing News APIs?
There is no generally available, official Google News API or Bing News API that functions as a simple, supported replacement for the services discussed here. Unofficial scraping wrappers and abandoned libraries can break without notice and may violate site terms. For a production integration, use a documented provider, a publisher’s official API or an open project whose licence and operational limits you understand.
Quick Recap
