For a reliable picture of your visibility in AI-generated search answers, start with the search engines’ own reporting: Google Search Console for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools for Microsoft-supported AI experiences. Add a paid GEO (generative engine optimization) platform when you need broader monitoring workflows, but treat its scores and recommendations as observations and hypotheses—not proof that a change will improve rankings, traffic, or sales.
What GEO tools measure—and what they cannot prove
GEO tools generally monitor whether a brand or page appears in generative search answers. Depending on the product, they may report impressions, brand mentions, linked citations, cited pages, prompts or grounding queries, competitors, and changes over time. These signals are not interchangeable: a mention is not necessarily a citation, citation counts do not show placement within an answer, and a vendor-defined visibility score is not a universal measure.

The evidence base is still developing. Olivier Martinez’s July 15, 2026 critical survey reviews 45 studies published from 2023 through July 2026 and finds heterogeneous terminology, metrics, and evidence standards. It describes GEO as a multi-stage process and says the reviewed techniques do not establish stable, longitudinal, cross-platform causal effects on organic discoverability or downstream behavior. No general effectiveness statistic supports claims about tool accuracy, citation lift, or return on investment. Read the survey.

Start with first-party reporting
Google Search Console: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. It reports organic impressions over time and groups results by page, country, date, and device. Google said the report’s insights had rolled out to websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. A property may not show the report if it has not received enough impressions from Google’s generative AI features. Report dates use Pacific Time, and normal Search performance reporting limits apply. See Google’s report documentation.
This is the most relevant first stop for measuring Google-specific impressions and the pages appearing in those features. It is not a cross-engine tracker, and an impression report does not establish that a particular optimization caused visibility.
Bing Webmaster Tools: citations in AI answers
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance dashboard reports total citations shown as sources in AI-generated answers, average unique cited pages per day, sample grounding queries, URL-level citation activity, and trends over time. Microsoft cautions that citation totals do not indicate placement in a particular answer; average cited pages do not establish ranking, authority, or a page’s role. See Bing’s AI Performance documentation.
On June 16, 2026, Microsoft announced that Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare capabilities were beginning to roll out globally in preview. Microsoft says these add context and comparison signals but do not produce one AI visibility score. Availability and precision are therefore preview-stage; check what is enabled in your account. Semrush
Semrush documents Brand Performance reporting for brand share of voice and sentiment across several AI platforms, with AI mentions, citations, and a visibility score. The features are available through Semrush One or the AI Visibility Toolkit. See Semrush’s feature documentation.
That documentation establishes listed functions, not comparative quality or effectiveness. It does not establish that using the product improves visibility. Check current plans, limits, supported platforms, and costs against your needs before choosing; availability and pricing can change.
How to decide whether to add one
- Platform and geography: Confirm which assistants and AI search features are monitored, and whether the product distinguishes surfaces and countries.
- Definition of visibility: Check whether brand mentions are separated from linked citations, and whether you can inspect the cited URL and answer context.
- Prompt methodology: Look for a way to define a consistent prompt set and an explanation of query variation, sampling, frequency, and repeatability.
- Competitors and sources: Determine whether you can inspect competing brands and the external pages cited in answers.
- Reporting workflow: Check trend comparisons, exports, team or client workflows, historical data, and whether any functions are still in preview.
- Cost and fit: Match current limits and pricing to the number of brands, prompts, platforms, markets, and seats you need.
- Actionability: Treat recommendations as hypotheses; validate them against first-party data and official search guidance rather than assuming that a visibility change proves causation.
The available product documentation does not establish a like-for-like comparison across paid GEO platforms, so these checks are more useful than choosing by headline score alone.

A practical way to use the data
- Define the question. Decide whether you need Google AI-feature impressions, Bing citations, or broader monitoring across multiple platforms. Each calls for a different measurement.
- Establish a baseline. Record the relevant first-party measures and dates, then keep the reporting surface and comparison period consistent.
- Inspect examples, not just totals. Where available, review the page, query or prompt, and answer context behind a visibility observation. A count alone does not explain why a page appeared.
- Make a focused change. Use established SEO practices and official guidance to choose an improvement, rather than treating a vendor score as an instruction.
- Recheck without claiming causation. Compare later observations with the baseline, while recognizing that co-occurring changes do not show that your action caused them.
