What actually protects you from poison in Valor Mortis?

Healing items can keep you alive after taking damage, but they do not make a character poison-resistant. Whetstones and invigorating tonics improve combat or recovery rather than neutralizing Nephtoglobin. Treat them as supporting supplies, not as substitutes for Shield or Sufferance.
Shield Transmutation: the answer for poison-cloud traversal
What Shield does
Shield is a defensive Transmutation that absorbs incoming damage and releases a shockwave. More importantly for this question, the quest guidance identifies it as the ability needed to pass through poison clouds. - Continue the main progression until the university. Shield is tied to that location and is the late Transmutation used for the passage.
- Unlock Shield Transmutation. The quest walkthrough specifically identifies this unlock as the requirement for passing the clouds.
- Return to the blocked route during The Emissary, if necessary. The cloud encounter is associated with that quest in the published walkthrough.
- Use Shield as the defensive answer to the hazard. Its role here is to let you traverse the cloud section; do not assume that a healing item or melee-damage buff performs the same function.
The available guidance establishes that Shield is required for passage, but it does not publish a damage-absorption value, duration, cooldown, or a claim that every poison source in the game is negated. Use it for the documented cloud route and avoid extrapolating beyond that evidence.
Sufferance: the stat for Nephtoglobin tolerance
What the stat means
Valor Mortis DB defines Sufferance as your “tolerance to Nephtoglobin.” The database lists 10 maximum Nephtoglobin Sufferance per level. In practical terms, Sufferance is the progression choice to make when you want a larger tolerance buffer for Nephtoglobin-related danger, rather than a one-time ability for a particular doorway or cloud.

Is there a poison-resistance amber?
Ambers are socketed passive gear, so they are a reasonable place to look for resistances. However, the available survival guidance gives explosion reduction as an example and does not name a poison-resistance amber. Do not spend a rare socket or redesign your build around an unnamed amber. Check the effect text in your current game version before treating any amber as Nephtoglobin protection. Is there an antidote or poison-curing consumable?

Consumables are consumed permanently and are not refunded on death. That rule makes blind experimentation expensive: using a tonic or whetstone before a failed cloud attempt does not turn it into an antidote, and the item will not return when you respawn. Save these supplies for the situations they actually address—damage output and health recovery—while relying on Shield for the route itself.
How the ferrofluid flask helps without providing resistance

If you can already pass the cloud and want broader tolerance
Invest in Sufferance when Nephtoglobin exposure is a recurring concern. Each level’s listed increase is 10 maximum Nephtoglobin Sufferance. Because no percentage reduction is supplied, compare the cost of another level against your wider build needs instead of assuming a precise number of extra seconds in a cloud.

If you are short on healing during exploration
Improve the ferrofluid flask through extra-charge and potency upgrades, and use lantern rests to refill it. This addresses health management. It should be planned alongside, not instead of, the Shield requirement for poison-cloud traversal.

Players pursuing the Abyssal Eviction trophy should reserve a Quintessential Transmutation Material for Shield level 5. The upgrade guidance describes the supply of this material as fixed and specifically recommends holding one for Shield before spending it elsewhere.
This is a resource-allocation decision, not evidence that Shield level 5 is required for every cloud. The supported advice is to preserve one material if the trophy is part of your plan. Spending a fixed resource on another Transmutation first can leave you unable to meet that upgrade recommendation later.

You reached the cloud early and cannot pass
Check progression before changing equipment. Shield is obtained at the university and is described as the final Transmutation, while the early Valley of Ashes encounter can precede it. Continue the story until the required unlock rather than searching for an undocumented mask or armor set.

You increased Sufferance but the route is still blocked
