There is no single best Gboard replacement for every Android user. Microsoft SwiftKey is the strongest first comparison for customization and Microsoft integration; HeliBoard and FUTO are aimed at people who prioritize offline operation; Samsung Keyboard is the natural choice on Galaxy phones; and Simple Keyboard is for users who want a deliberately stripped-down layout. Choose by privacy comfort, input features, device integration, and how much installation effort you are willing to accept—not by unsupported claims about typing speed or accuracy.

What to choose at a glance

The right keyboard depends more on your phone and priorities than on a universal ranking. The descriptions below come from Android Authority’s June 29, 2026 comparison; they are product descriptions, not independent speed, accuracy, latency, accessibility, or security tests.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Keyboard Best fit Notable capabilities Distribution and effort Main compromise
Microsoft SwiftKey People who want customization and Microsoft services Split layouts, Copilot writing assistance, and clipboard syncing with Windows when the same Microsoft account is used Use the normal Android app-install route; exact availability can vary by device and region Cloud-connected account features require more privacy trade-offs than an offline-focused keyboard
HeliBoard Users seeking an offline-focused, open-source keyboard Autocorrect, gesture typing, clipboard history, incognito mode, and customization Obtain it through GitHub or F-Droid rather than the Play Store, so installation takes extra steps No independent security certification was established in the cited coverage
FUTO Keyboard Users who want offline-oriented voice input Voice typing based on a local Whisper model, plus standard keyboard functions Available through the Play Store Larger voice models use more storage and may perform poorly on budget phones, according to the product description
Samsung Keyboard Owners of Samsung Galaxy phones One UI integration, Galaxy AI writing features, Samsung Pass integration, and Good Lock’s KeysCafe customization Usually already integrated on compatible Galaxy devices; exact features depend on model and software Its strongest advantages are tied to Samsung hardware and One UI
Simple Keyboard People who value a minimal interface above convenience features Standard layout, adjustable height, light and dark themes, and basic gestures Check the current listing and compatible installation source for your device No spell check, autocorrect, swipe typing, emoji panel, or toolbar

How to decide before installing anything

1. Decide where you are comfortable with data being processed

A keyboard can see what you type, so privacy expectations should come before cosmetic preferences. “Offline” can mean that the core operation is designed to run on the phone; it does not automatically prove that every optional feature, update check, or distribution channel has the same behavior. Conversely, an account-enabled keyboard can offer useful synchronization while giving you a different cloud-processing profile.

  • Choose HeliBoard when an offline-focused, open-source option and local clipboard history matter most.
  • Consider FUTO when you want voice input processed by a local Whisper-based model and can spare storage.
  • Choose SwiftKey if its features justify an account and you understand which services you are enabling.
  • Choose Samsung Keyboard when keeping input inside the Galaxy/One UI ecosystem is more important than switching to a cross-device alternative.
  • Choose Simple Keyboard when reducing the surface area of features matters more than prediction and convenience.

2. List the input features you actually use

Make a short checklist before switching: swipe or gesture typing, autocorrect, voice typing, clipboard history, emoji access, split layouts, writing assistance, and a toolbar. A minimal keyboard can feel cleaner but become frustrating if it removes a feature you use every day.

3. Check the device and language details

Availability and behavior can change by Android release, phone model, language pack, region, and app version. Confirm support in the current app listing and in your keyboard settings. The cited comparison does not establish language-by-language coverage, accessibility quality, or comparative typing accuracy, so do not treat any option as universally superior for those needs.

Microsoft SwiftKey: the broadest feature comparison

Why it stands out

SwiftKey is the most sensible first alternative when your priorities are layout flexibility and Microsoft ecosystem features. Android Authority’s June 29, 2026 comparison highlights split layout options, Copilot writing assistance, and clipboard synchronization with Windows when you use the same Microsoft account. That combination makes it more attractive to people who move between an Android phone and a Windows computer than to someone seeking a strictly local keyboard.

Privacy and account choices

Microsoft’s support documentation says that, without opting into a SwiftKey account, personal and language data generated by SwiftKey on Android is stored locally and is not transferred. If you create an account, specific services can send some data for cloud processing; Microsoft cites Backup & Sync as an example. Treat this as Microsoft’s stated policy, not an independent privacy audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also says SwiftKey does not learn from fields marked as password fields or remember long credit-card numbers. The same documentation notes limitations: an app or website may fail to mark a field correctly, and a revealed password field may no longer be recognized as a password field. Avoid typing secrets into an ordinary text field simply because the keyboard normally treats password fields specially.

Who should skip it

SwiftKey is a poor fit if you want to avoid account services entirely, do not need cross-device clipboard synchronization, or prefer a keyboard whose central pitch is offline operation. Disable optional account features you do not need, and review the permissions and privacy choices shown during setup.

HeliBoard: offline-focused and open source

What it offers

Android Authority describes HeliBoard as free, open source, and offline, with autocorrect, gesture typing, clipboard history, incognito mode, and customization. That set covers the fundamentals many users expect from a modern keyboard while keeping the emphasis on local operation.

  • Package contents: Arteck HB098 Bluetooth Keyboard, 2 X AAA batteries, welcome guide, our 24-month warranty and friendly customer service.

Installation trade-off

The comparison says HeliBoard is obtained through GitHub or F-Droid rather than the Play Store. That means you must identify the correct project release or repository, install it through the method supported by your phone, and keep track of updates yourself. Android’s security prompts and menu names vary by manufacturer and version; read each prompt instead of granting broad permissions automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because no independent security certification was established in the cited material, open-source status should not be presented as a guarantee. Review the project’s current release information, download only from the project’s stated channels, and consider whether you are comfortable with that maintenance model.

Best use case

HeliBoard makes the most sense for a technically comfortable user who wants gesture typing and clipboard history without making a cloud account central to the experience. It is less suitable if you require a one-tap Play Store installation or vendor-backed cloud synchronization.

FUTO Keyboard: local voice typing with storage considerations

Its differentiator

FUTO is described as an offline-oriented keyboard with voice typing that uses a Whisper-based local model. Local voice processing can appeal to users who do not want speech sent to a remote service, but the model itself has practical costs.

Model size and phone performance

Android Authority’s comparison says larger models require more storage and may work poorly on budget phones. Those are product-description caveats rather than results from an independent benchmark. Check available storage before downloading a larger model, and start with the model that your phone can handle comfortably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to get it

The comparison lists FUTO as available from the Play Store, which removes the extra repository step associated with HeliBoard. Play Store availability does not establish that every language, model, or feature is supported on every Android device, so verify the current listing and in-app options.

Samsung Keyboard: the practical Galaxy choice

Why Galaxy owners should consider it

Samsung Keyboard is most relevant when you already use a Galaxy phone. The comparison points to One UI integration, Galaxy AI writing features, Samsung Pass integration, and additional customization through Good Lock’s KeysCafe module. These capabilities are valuable because they fit the phone’s existing software rather than requiring a separate ecosystem.

Device-dependent features

Galaxy AI and other Samsung services are not guaranteed to appear on every model or software release. Feature availability can depend on the device, One UI version, region, language, and account configuration. Check the keyboard and Good Lock settings on your specific phone before assuming a feature is included.

When another keyboard is better

Choose a different option if you are moving between non-Samsung devices, want an offline-focused project, or prefer a minimal layout without Samsung-specific integrations. Samsung Keyboard’s advantage is integration; that advantage naturally matters less outside the Galaxy environment.

Simple Keyboard: the minimal option

What “simple” means here

Simple Keyboard is built around a standard layout, adjustable keyboard height, light and dark themes, and basic gestures. It deliberately omits spell check, autocorrect, swipe typing, an emoji panel, and a toolbar.

Who will like it

It suits someone who wants fewer controls on screen, dislikes suggestion strips, or is willing to correct text manually. Height adjustment can help reclaim screen space or make keys easier to reach.

Who should avoid it

Do not choose it if you depend on predictive correction, swipe input, quick emoji access, or a clipboard and shortcut toolbar. Its limitations are not setup bugs; they are the defining trade-off.

Privacy comparison: what the available evidence can and cannot show

How to replace Gboard safely

Before you switch

  • Confirm that the alternative supports the languages and layouts you use.
  • Record any custom words, shortcuts, or clipboard items you cannot easily recreate.
  • Keep Gboard enabled until the new keyboard works in messaging, email, a browser, and a password field.
  • Read the app’s permissions and privacy choices; do not enable account sync or optional cloud services by accident.

Install and enable the new keyboard

  1. Install the keyboard from its stated channel. SwiftKey, FUTO, and Samsung availability depends on the device and region; HeliBoard is described as coming through GitHub or F-Droid; Simple Keyboard’s current source should be checked for your phone.
  2. Open Android Settings and search for keyboard or on-screen keyboard. Common paths are Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard or a manufacturer-specific equivalent.
  3. Open Manage on-screen keyboards and enable the new app. Android may display a warning because a keyboard can process text; read it before confirming.
  4. Tap a text field, open the keyboard chooser from the navigation or keyboard icon, and select the new keyboard.
  5. Open the keyboard’s own settings and configure language, layout, autocorrect, gesture typing, voice input, clipboard, and privacy options. Labels differ by app.
  6. Test ordinary text, a password field, voice input if you need it, and switching languages. If a critical feature fails, return to the keyboard chooser and select Gboard while you troubleshoot.

Return to Gboard or another keyboard

Use the same keyboard chooser or the on-screen-keyboard settings to switch back. You can leave an alternative installed but disabled while deciding; uninstall only after you are sure you no longer need its settings or saved data.

Common problems and fixes

The keyboard does not appear in the chooser

Reopen Manage on-screen keyboards and confirm the app is enabled. If it is missing, installation may not have completed, the app may be incompatible with your Android version, or the device may restrict that installation source. Reinstall only from the keyboard’s stated channel.

Voice typing is unavailable

Check that the keyboard includes voice input, that the required model or language is installed, and that microphone access is allowed. For FUTO, verify that the selected Whisper model fits your storage and phone capability; larger models can be demanding on budget hardware.

Autocorrect or swipe typing disappeared

This is expected with Simple Keyboard, which is described as lacking both autocorrect and swipe typing. With HeliBoard or another feature-rich option, inspect the app’s language and gesture settings rather than assuming Android’s system keyboard settings apply.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clipboard items are missing

Clipboard behavior is app-specific. HeliBoard is described as offering clipboard history, while SwiftKey’s cross-device clipboard synchronization requires the same Microsoft account and the relevant service enabled. Do not assume that switching keyboards transfers old clipboard history automatically.

  • EASY TO USE: Bluetooth wireless easily connect with your mobile device such as tablets and mobile phones, the operating distance up to 10 meters, you could enjoy fast response with each typing

A password field behaves unexpectedly

Microsoft says SwiftKey does not learn from fields marked as password fields, but also documents that an app or website can mark a field incorrectly or stop identifying it as a password field after the password is revealed. Use the site or app’s own security controls, and avoid relying on a keyboard’s field detection as your only safeguard.

The phone feels slower after enabling a keyboard

Check model size and optional features first, especially with FUTO’s local voice models. Disable services you do not use, keep adequate storage free, and compare behavior with a simpler configuration. The available comparison does not provide benchmark figures, so there is no evidence-based threshold for “normal” latency.

What one publisher poll can—and cannot—tell you

Android Authority’s page included a poll asking which keyboard respondents would choose if Gboard disappeared. It displayed 3,774 votes: SwiftKey 28%, HeliBoard 25%, Samsung Keyboard 23%, FUTO Keyboard 13%, Simple Keyboard 8%, and Other 3%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That poll is a snapshot of one publisher’s audience, not representative Android market share, a controlled usability study, or proof that the highest percentage types fastest. Use it as an indication of reader interest, not as a performance ranking.

A decision checklist

  • Pick SwiftKey if split layouts, Copilot assistance, or Windows clipboard synchronization are worth using a Microsoft account and reviewing its cloud-service choices.
  • Pick HeliBoard if offline operation, open-source availability, gesture typing, clipboard history, and customization matter more than Play Store convenience.
  • Pick FUTO if local voice typing is your priority and your phone has enough storage and performance for the model you select.
  • Pick Samsung Keyboard if you own a compatible Galaxy phone and want One UI, Samsung Pass, Galaxy AI, and KeysCafe integration.
  • Pick Simple Keyboard if a clean, adjustable, low-feature layout is the goal and you can live without autocorrect, swipe typing, emoji access, and a toolbar.

Install one that matches your highest-priority requirement, test it across the apps and languages you actually use, and keep a fallback keyboard enabled until the switch is reliable. None of the available evidence supports declaring a universal winner for speed, accuracy, accessibility, or security.
