The right choice depends on whether you play on a PS5 or Xbox, run a high-frame-rate gaming PC, need several HDMI 2.1 inputs, and play in a bright or dark room. Current reviewer rankings are useful starting points, not universal awards, and the exact size and regional SKU can change the feature set.
What makes a gaming TV “best” in 2026?
A gaming TV has to do more than display a sharp picture. It must accept the signal your console or PC can produce, refresh at an appropriate rate, keep input delay low, synchronize its refresh with changing frame rates, and provide enough high-bandwidth ports for every device. Picture technology and room lighting then determine whether OLED or Mini-LED is the better fit.

The ceiling of your source device should guide the purchase. Current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles can output up to 120 frames per second in supported games, while a suitably powerful PC may make use of 144Hz, 165Hz or higher modes. A television advertised at 165Hz does not make a console render at 165 frames per second; the console, game, resolution and selected output mode still set the practical limit. RTINGS explains the console frame-rate limits in its 2026 gaming-TV guide.

Shortlist: which direction should you investigate?
| Candidate or category | What the current source establishes | Who should investigate it | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| LG C6 OLED (2026) | RTINGS lists it as an upper-mid-range gaming-TV recommendation and as its best TV for PC-monitor use. | Players who want an OLED gaming display and may connect a PC as well as a console. | Exact screen size, regional SKU, HDMI 2.1 count, supported refresh modes, VRR formats and local availability. |
| TCL QM7L | What Hi-Fi includes it among current Mini-LED gaming-TV choices. | Buyers comparing Mini-LED contrast and brightness characteristics with OLED alternatives. | Local model name, panel size, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, VRR standards, ALLM and the refresh modes available at your chosen resolution. |
| LG OLED evo range (2025 catalogue context) | LG’s catalogue lists 165Hz VRR with G-SYNC certification and four HDMI 2.1 connections for the specified range. | PC gamers who need more than 120Hz and want several high-bandwidth inputs. | Do not assume every 2026 C6 size or country variant carries every range-level specification; confirm the product page for the exact SKU. |
| Other 4K/120Hz-plus TVs | Reviewer guides include sets with combinations such as 4K/144Hz, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision game mode and two 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 inputs. | Anyone comparing a broader market rather than choosing between two named candidates. | Which inputs run at full bandwidth, whether eARC shares a port, and whether the advertised mode works with your GPU or console. |
The 4K/144Hz and two-48Gbps-input example above is a specification for a set described by What Hi-Fi, not a claim about every model in its guide. Likewise, TechRadar reports a listed model with 144Hz, HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro, four HDMI 2.1 ports and measured input lag of 13.6ms; the search context does not identify that model well enough to assign those numbers to the LG C6, TCL QM7L or any other TV. Check the full What Hi-Fi guide and TechRadar guide before treating a measurement as model-specific.
Refresh rate: buy for the frames you can actually produce
120Hz is the practical console target
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles can reach 120fps in games that offer a 120Hz performance mode. That makes a genuine 120Hz panel with a suitable HDMI 2.1 input the sensible baseline for a new console TV. A 60Hz model cannot display the console’s 120fps mode, even if the game and console are configured correctly.
Frame rate varies by title, resolution and graphics mode. A game may use a 60fps quality mode, a 120fps performance mode, or a variable rate below 120fps. The TV’s maximum refresh rate is therefore a capability ceiling rather than a promise that every game will run at that speed.

When 144Hz or 165Hz helps a PC
Higher rates matter primarily when a PC, graphics card, game and cable can deliver more than 120 frames per second at the selected resolution. The improvement from 120Hz to 144Hz or 165Hz is visible as smoother motion and lower frame-to-frame persistence in supported games, but it is wasted if the computer normally renders below 120fps or if the input is limited to 4K/120.
LG’s 2025 OLED evo catalogue describes 165Hz VRR, G-SYNC certification and four HDMI 2.1 connections for the specified range. Those are manufacturer-published range specifications in the LG OLED evo AI Catalogue 2025; verify that the particular 2026 C6 size and regional version supports the same mode before using it as a PC-monitor replacement.

Advertised maximum versus usable mode
Manufacturers may quote a panel maximum while the input, resolution or colour format imposes a lower limit. A TV can be capable of 165Hz internally yet accept only 4K/120 from a console, or offer 144Hz only through a specific HDMI input and PC timing. Read the detailed input table, not just the headline number, and confirm that the graphics card or console exposes the desired setting.
VRR, ALLM and latency: the features that affect control
Variable refresh rate
VRR lets the TV change its refresh timing to follow the game’s current frame rate. That can reduce tearing when rendering fluctuates between, for example, 85 and 110fps. The TV and source must support a compatible standard; “VRR” on a marketing page does not identify whether the connection uses HDMI Forum VRR, AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-SYNC.
Check the supported range as well as the name. A narrow VRR window may stop working below a particular frame rate, while a wider range can keep motion consistent in demanding scenes. Confirm the feature on the exact HDMI input you will use, because not every socket necessarily has identical capabilities.
Auto Low Latency Mode
ALLM allows a console or PC to signal the TV to switch into its low-latency picture preset. It is convenient, but it does not replace checking measured input lag or the TV’s processing options. Turn off motion interpolation and other cinema processing in the game preset if they add delay.
Input-lag numbers need context
Input lag is the delay between a source signal and the corresponding change on screen. Test results depend on resolution, refresh rate, picture mode and measurement method. TechRadar’s guide gives a 13.6ms measured result for one 144Hz model, alongside HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro and four HDMI 2.1 ports; because the supplied search result does not establish that model’s identity, do not reuse 13.6ms as the LG C6 or TCL QM7L figure.

HDMI 2.1 planning: count devices before choosing a TV
HDMI 2.1 inputs are important for 4K at 120Hz or higher, VRR and other high-bandwidth combinations. Make an inventory before buying:
Recommended Free Tools
- One port for a PS5, if you own one.
- One port for an Xbox Series X|S, if applicable.
- One port for a gaming PC with a compatible HDMI output.
- One port for an audio receiver or soundbar if you need eARC and the TV does not provide pass-through another way.
Some televisions provide only two HDMI 2.1 sockets, and one may be shared with eARC. Others advertise four. What Hi-Fi and other guides call out this allocation difference because it determines whether you must swap cables, use a receiver, or sacrifice a high-refresh connection. Read the rear-panel diagram and the eARC note in the manual, not only the total HDMI count.
As an example of why extra capability does not change console limits, RTINGS notes in its 2026 PS5 TV guide that a recommended TV’s four HDMI 2.1 ports can support up to 4K at 165Hz, while the PS5 itself tops out at 120Hz. The additional headroom is useful for a PC, not a way to raise the console’s output ceiling.
OLED or Mini-LED for gaming?
OLED strengths
- Each pixel can be controlled independently, giving very dark scenes and strong contrast in a dim room.
- Pixel response is typically fast, which suits camera pans and competitive play.
- OLED models are represented in current gaming-TV and PC-monitor recommendations, including the LG C6 listing from RTINGS.
OLED ownership still calls for sensible static-image habits. Long sessions with an unmoving HUD, desktop taskbar or news ticker can create uneven wear over time. Use the TV’s pixel-care features, vary content and avoid leaving a static PC screen on unnecessarily. The useful question is not whether OLED is universally better, but whether its contrast and response advantages outweigh your room brightness, content mix and long-term usage pattern.
Mini-LED strengths
- A Mini-LED backlight can deliver high brightness that is useful in a sunlit room and for HDR highlights.
- There is no OLED pixel-wear mechanism, which can reassure people who display static PC interfaces for many hours.
- The TCL QM7L appears in What Hi-Fi’s current list of Mini-LED gaming choices, so it is a model to investigate rather than a guaranteed winner.
Mini-LED performance depends heavily on local-dimming control. Bright objects beside dark backgrounds can produce blooming, and response, VRR behavior and input lag vary by model. Compare independent measurements for the exact size where available instead of assuming that every Mini-LED television behaves alike.

Match the display to the room
For a dark gaming room where black-level detail and fast pixel transitions dominate, OLED may be the more natural starting point. For a bright lounge, a Mini-LED option can make highlights and daytime visibility easier. Reflections, viewing distance and screen size can matter more than a small difference in peak refresh rate that your source cannot use.
How to choose the right size and placement
Choose size from seating distance and field of view, not from the refresh-rate label alone. A screen that is too small makes interface text and distant targets harder to read; one that is too large can force constant eye movement in a desk setup. Measure the wall or stand, check the TV’s feet width, and leave room for ventilation and cable bends.
- Desk or close PC use: verify the stand depth, viewing distance and operating-system scaling. A TV used as a monitor needs a clear 4:4:4-capable PC mode and readable text at your chosen resolution; confirm this in the manual or independent test.
- Living-room console use: prioritize a comfortable field of view, low reflection and enough HDMI 2.1 inputs for every console.
- Shared movie-and-game room: compare HDR picture modes, automatic game-mode switching and audio routing so you do not trade away everyday usability for a single gaming specification.
Step-by-step setup for a 4K high-refresh gaming TV
- Record the source capabilities. Note each console model, PC graphics card, target resolution and the frame rates your games actually offer. Treat 120fps as the current console ceiling and reserve 144Hz or 165Hz planning for a PC that can feed those rates.
- Assign the high-bandwidth ports. Plug the most demanding devices into the TV’s HDMI 2.1 inputs. If one port is eARC, decide whether your soundbar or receiver needs it before connecting a console there.
- Use an appropriate cable. For 4K/120 or higher modes, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable of the required length. A cable that works at 4K/60 may not reliably carry 4K/120 with VRR.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced input mode. Manufacturers use labels such as Enhanced, Input Signal Plus or HDMI Deep Colour. Select the option for the connected input, then restart the source if the new mode is not detected.
- Turn on game features. Select the Game picture preset, enable VRR and ALLM where available, and disable motion smoothing or noise reduction if they increase delay. Keep a cinema preset for films rather than altering the game mode each time.
- Configure the console. In the console’s screen and video settings, choose 4K output, 120Hz automatic or equivalent, and VRR when the TV reports compatibility. Run the console’s video-information screen to confirm resolution, HDR and 120Hz support.
- Configure the PC. In the operating system’s advanced display settings or the graphics driver, select the TV’s intended resolution and refresh rate. In the GPU control panel, enable the compatible VRR standard and use the TV’s PC or game input label if it provides one.
- Check the result in a real game. Watch for black screens, intermittent dropouts, judder or tearing while moving the camera. If an issue appears only at 144Hz or 165Hz, test 120Hz, a shorter cable and another HDMI input to isolate bandwidth or compatibility problems.
- Update firmware after recording your baseline. Firmware can change VRR behavior or add compatibility, but it can also reset picture settings. Write down your working values before updating and recheck them afterward.
Buying checks that prevent common mistakes
Verify the exact SKU and region
Model names can differ by country, screen size and retailer. A specification listed for one size may not apply to another, and a 2025 catalogue may describe a product family rather than every 2026 model. Before paying, compare the full model code on the box or manufacturer page with the specification sheet for your market.
Do not count every HDMI socket as HDMI 2.1
A television can have four HDMI sockets but only two high-bandwidth inputs. Confirm which numbered ports support 4K/120, VRR and the stated bandwidth. Also check whether eARC occupies one of them.

A 165Hz label does not guarantee 165fps at 4K, and a 4K/144Hz input does not make a PS5 exceed 120Hz. Check the source, game mode and resolution together. If your PC cannot sustain the higher frame rate, a well-implemented 120Hz mode may be more valuable than a larger headline number.

Ask what was measured
When a review quotes input lag, identify the test resolution, refresh rate and picture preset. When it lists VRR, identify the standard and operating range. When it describes HDR brightness, identify the window size and picture mode. Numbers without those conditions are poor buying guidance.
Check audio before final cable routing
If you use a soundbar or receiver, verify eARC support, the HDMI port it uses and whether the TV passes the audio formats you need. A two-HDMI-2.1 television with one eARC port may leave only one free high-bandwidth input for consoles and a PC.
Which TV should you buy?
Start with the LG C6 OLED 2026 if you want an OLED candidate that current RTINGS guides place on both a gaming-TV shortlist and a PC-monitor shortlist. Confirm the exact size, ports, VRR formats and regional specification before ordering.

Put the TCL QM7L beside it when you prefer to investigate a Mini-LED design, play in a bright room or want to avoid relying on OLED for a static desktop. Verify the local name and the actual 4K/120-or-higher, VRR and HDMI 2.1 behavior for the size you can buy.
If you connect several consoles, a PC and eARC audio, make port allocation the deciding filter. If you play mainly on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, prioritize a reliable 4K/120 implementation, VRR compatibility and low-latency mode over a maximum refresh number your console cannot use. If you are a high-end PC player, investigate 144Hz or 165Hz support, the appropriate VRR standard and the graphics card’s HDMI capability. This process produces a defensible choice without pretending that one television is best for every room, device or budget.
