Best Gaming Laptop Under $300 in 2026: What You Can Actually Buy

Short answer: a new laptop under $300 is usually a basic Chromebook, not a conventional gaming computer for demanding games installed locally. The strongest current candidate is the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026), which RTINGS named its best laptop under $300 on September 30, 2026. It is suitable for browsing, school or office work, video, and potentially cloud gaming. Its low-end processor, optional 4GB memory, eMMC storage, ChromeOS software limits, and display and battery compromises mean you should buy it as a budget Chromebook that can stream games—not as a high-performance Windows gaming laptop.

The right choice depends on where the game runs. If you need Windows software or demanding games rendered on the machine, raise the budget or consider a carefully inspected used laptop. If browser-based cloud gaming is acceptable, the CX15 can work when the particular game, service, browser, region, and internet connection are supported.

Can I get a gaming laptop for $300?

You can get a laptop that participates in gaming for $300, but the phrase “gaming laptop” needs a precise definition. A new machine at this price generally has integrated graphics, a low-power processor, limited memory, and inexpensive storage. Those parts are designed for web applications, documents, streaming video, and light multitasking. They are not the usual specification for modern games rendered locally at high settings.

RTINGS’ under-$300 recommendations are all Chromebooks. Its description of this category is productivity and media consumption, and it notes that ChromeOS cannot install many programs designed for Windows or macOS. That matters more than a product’s screen size or a listing that uses the word gaming: a game must have a ChromeOS-compatible version, run in a browser, or be rendered remotely by a cloud service.

RTINGS tested more than 180 laptops for its broader recommendations, but that figure is a test-sample count, not a measurement of how many gaming laptops exist below $300. No reliable market-wide percentage establishes that a particular share of sub-$300 machines can run games locally. Treat any inexpensive listing that promises modern AAA performance with skepticism unless it identifies the exact processor, graphics hardware, memory, operating system, and independent test conditions.

Best new option: ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026)

RTINGS named the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) its best laptop under $300 in an update dated September 30, 2026. The recommendation is based on availability and a traditional clamshell design for basic ChromeOS work. It is not a claim that the CX15 is a high-performance gaming computer.

What the CX15 is good at

  • Web browsing, documents, email, and video calls.
  • Streaming media on its 15.6-inch display.
  • Using a supported browser-based cloud-gaming service when the network and game meet that service’s requirements.
  • Running a small number of browser tabs more comfortably when configured with 8GB of RAM rather than 4GB.

Where it falls short

  • ChromeOS cannot install many conventional Windows and macOS game programs.
  • The Intel Celeron N4500 is an entry-level processor; Tom’s Guide describes performance as lacking for power users.
  • Integrated, low-end hardware is not intended to render demanding modern games locally.
  • RTINGS reports a washed-out screen, an occasionally unreliable touchpad, and battery life that may not last a full workday.
  • Tom’s Guide identifies a limited port selection, which can complicate wired accessories and external displays.

These compromises are acceptable only if they match your use. A student who wants one inexpensive Chromebook for documents, video, and occasional streamed games has a plausible fit. Someone expecting the keyboard, cooling, graphics performance, upgradeability, and Windows compatibility of a purpose-built gaming laptop does not.

CX15 specifications to verify before buying

Tom’s Guide’s October 7, 2026 roundup lists the following maximum or representative specifications. “Up to” values do not mean every retail listing includes them, so compare the exact SKU, seller description, and return policy before paying.

Component Reported CX15 detail What it means for gaming
Operating system ChromeOS Browser and compatible ChromeOS games are possible; many Windows and macOS programs cannot be installed.
Processor Intel Celeron N4500 Entry-level performance; not a substitute for a dedicated gaming CPU.
Memory Up to 8GB RAM Prefer the verified 8GB configuration for cloud-gaming tabs and multitasking; 4GB is better limited to a few tabs.
Storage Up to 128GB eMMC Useful for ChromeOS and files, but eMMC is not the same as a fast, large gaming SSD and does not solve software compatibility.
Display 15.6-inch, 1,920 × 1,080 LCD Full HD is useful for ordinary media and supported streams; it does not indicate local game-rendering power.
Ports Limited selection, according to Tom’s Guide Check the exact port layout if you need Ethernet, USB accessories, a headset, or an external monitor.
Price Tom’s Guide recorded $269 when its article was updated That was a dated review price, not a current guarantee. Verify live price, stock, condition, warranty, and returns.

RTINGS says an 8GB version may appear below $300 during sales. Because configurations and sellers change, do not infer that every CX15 listing has 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, or the same panel. A listing that is technically a CX15 can still be a poor value if it has less memory, an incomplete specification, no meaningful return window, or a price above the budget.

How to choose a realistic $300 gaming setup

Use the following decision order instead of starting with a brand name. It prevents an inexpensive laptop from being judged against the wrong workload.

1. Decide where the game will run

  • Locally on the laptop: verify that the game has a ChromeOS-compatible release or browser version and that the machine meets its requirements. The CX15’s low-end hardware makes demanding local games an unsuitable target.
  • In the cloud: the remote service renders the game and sends video to the laptop. The CX15 then acts mainly as a browser client, so network latency, bandwidth, service eligibility, and controller support become decisive.
  • On another computer or console: a remote-play arrangement may be possible, but compatibility and network conditions still need checking. Do not assume every remote-play method works on every ChromeOS version.

2. Confirm the operating system requirement

If the game or launcher requires a Windows installation, ChromeOS is the wrong platform regardless of screen resolution. RTINGS specifically warns that ChromeOS cannot install many applications designed for Windows or macOS. A Windows laptop at the same new price is likely to make major compromises elsewhere, so compare the operating system requirement before comparing processor names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the exact memory and storage configuration

For this model, 8GB RAM is the sensible target when available within the budget. RTINGS says 4GB is best kept to a few tabs, and cloud gaming adds a live video stream, account pages, chat, and possibly a game library tab. Storage capacity affects downloads and files, not the CX15’s ability to render a demanding game. The maximum figures reported by Tom’s Guide are 8GB RAM and 128GB eMMC; verify the listing rather than assuming those maxima.

  • Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
  • 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home

4. Inspect the complete listing

  • Exact model and memory/storage variant.
  • New, used, refurbished, or open-box condition.
  • Seller identity, warranty length, and return period.
  • Included charger and keyboard layout.
  • Current price and shipping cost.
  • Port list and wireless specifications.

A dated review price cannot establish what a particular seller charges today. If the configuration you need exceeds $300 after shipping or tax, it no longer satisfies a strict budget ceiling.

What games can a $300 laptop run?

There is no universal game list for a $300 laptop because the answer changes with the operating system, game version, service catalogue, browser, region, and network. The CX15 can run supported browser experiences and compatible ChromeOS software, but its specifications do not justify promising a fixed set of modern locally rendered games.

For cloud gaming, ask three separate questions for every title:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Is the title available through the service? A GeForce NOW membership connects supported game stores; it does not make every game available. Xbox Cloud Gaming likewise offers selected free-to-play and Game Pass library titles rather than every release.
  2. Is the service supported on this Chromebook and in your region? Service catalogues, browser support, and regional eligibility change.
  3. Can your connection deliver the required stream? A laptop can meet the browser requirement and still provide an unpleasant experience if latency, congestion, or Wi-Fi interference is high.

Therefore, the accurate answer to “What games can a $300 laptop run?” is: locally, only titles whose ChromeOS/browser requirements fit its modest hardware; through the cloud, titles listed by a supported service and playable under your connection and account conditions. Check the service’s current game catalogue before buying for one specific title.

Can I use GeForce NOW on a Chromebook?

Yes, NVIDIA publishes ChromeOS requirements for GeForce NOW, but compatibility is conditional. NVIDIA lists Chromebooks with at least 4GB of RAM and Chrome browser 77 or later. It also specifies connection targets and requires less than 80 milliseconds of latency from an NVIDIA data center.

GeForce NOW target on ChromeOS Listed requirement Qualification
HD, up to 60 frames per second 15 Mbps Service requirement, not an independent measurement of CX15 performance.
Full HD at 60 frames per second 25 Mbps Actual experience also depends on latency, Wi-Fi quality, congestion, and service availability.
QHD at 120 frames per second 35 Mbps Some higher-resolution and frame-rate features require an Ultimate membership on Chromebook.
Latency Less than 80 ms from an NVIDIA data center Distance and routing vary by location; a speed test alone cannot prove suitability.

NVIDIA recommends, “We recommend a hardwired Ethernet connection, or a router with a 5 GHz WiFi connection.” A wired connection can be difficult on a Chromebook with limited ports, so check whether an appropriate adapter is needed. A 5 GHz network can help, but it does not remove distance, congestion, or interference.

GeForce NOW setup checklist

  1. Confirm that the Chromebook has at least 4GB RAM and a Chrome browser version meeting NVIDIA’s current requirement.
  2. Update ChromeOS and the browser through the device’s settings before troubleshooting the service.
  3. Check your measured connection and latency to the relevant service location, preferably at the time you normally play.
  4. Use Ethernet when the CX15’s ports and adapter arrangement permit it; otherwise connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router nearby.
  5. Sign in to GeForce NOW and verify that the particular game is supported and linked through a supported store.
  6. Start at the service’s lower bandwidth target if the stream stutters, then adjust only after confirming stable latency.
  7. Use a supported controller or the keyboard and mouse arrangement required by the game. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers among supported gamepads and recommends a USB gaming mouse for some setups.

Requirements, plan features, supported games, and browser support can change. Treat NVIDIA’s current requirements page as the authority at the time you subscribe, not as a permanent guarantee for every future title.

Is a Chromebook good for gaming?

A Chromebook is good for the type of gaming it is designed to support: browser games, compatible ChromeOS titles, and cloud gaming with a suitable connection. It is a poor match for a Windows-only launcher, a game that needs a dedicated graphics processor, or a buyer who expects to install a large local library.

The CX15’s 15.6-inch Full HD display is comfortable for menus and streamed video, but RTINGS reports that the panel can look washed out. The touchpad may occasionally be unreliable, and battery life may fall short of a full workday. Those are everyday-use issues as well as gaming issues: a streamed game can feel responsive while the input device or display still feels disappointing.

ChromeOS also changes how storage should be evaluated. The reported 128GB maximum eMMC capacity is adequate for ChromeOS files and browser data, but cloud gaming generally avoids storing the full game locally. If you need extensive offline installs, a Chromebook’s operating system and storage type are more important constraints than the nominal screen resolution.

What about Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Microsoft lists browser-based Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported devices, selected free-to-play and Game Pass library titles, and a minimum 10 Mbps Wi-Fi or LTE connection. The service is regional, and the catalogue and eligible devices can change. A CX15 buyer should check current availability in their country, the browser requirement, the specific title, and any account or subscription condition before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 10 Mbps figure is a minimum connection statement, not a promise of perfect play. Household traffic, wireless interference, distance to the service, and latency can cause delay or image quality changes even when a speed test exceeds 10 Mbps. Use a controller when the title requires or strongly favors one, and confirm that the Chromebook recognizes it before starting a paid session.

Controllers, mice, and other accessories

An accessory can improve control, but it cannot upgrade the CX15’s processor, graphics capability, memory, or display. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers as supported gamepads. A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is therefore a reasonable cloud-gaming accessory when the service and title support it.

NVIDIA recommends a USB gaming mouse for some GeForce NOW setups. Because Tom’s Guide reports a limited port selection on the CX15, count the available USB ports before choosing a mouse, controller, headset, or Ethernet adapter. A hub may add connections, but it also adds another device and cable to carry; check that the hub works with the Chromebook and does not block the port needed for charging.

  • Controller: useful for compatible streamed games; not a performance upgrade.
  • USB mouse: useful for pointer-heavy or mouse-and-keyboard games; verify port availability.
  • Ethernet adapter: potentially useful for a steadier cloud connection; confirm Chromebook compatibility.
  • Headset: optional for voice and game audio; check the CX15’s available audio or USB connection.

When a $300 Chromebook is the wrong purchase

Choose a different path if any of these requirements is non-negotiable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You must install Windows-only games, launchers, anti-cheat components, or desktop software.
  • You need consistent local performance without relying on an internet connection.
  • You expect modern games to run at high settings or high frame rates from the laptop’s own hardware.
  • You need a color-accurate display, a highly reliable touchpad, a full workday of battery life, or many built-in ports.
  • Your home connection has unstable latency, data limits, or no practical path to the service’s data centers.

In those cases, raising the budget, buying a carefully tested used or refurbished Windows laptop, or using a console or existing desktop may be more realistic than forcing a new Chromebook into a role it was not designed to fill. For a used machine, inspect battery health, warranty, return rights, exact graphics hardware, and operating-system activation rather than relying on the seller’s “gaming” label.

A practical buying process

  1. Write down the games and software you actually need. Separate local Windows requirements from browser or cloud options.
  2. Check service and regional eligibility. Look up the current GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming catalogue and supported-device information for each target title.
  3. Set a connection baseline. For GeForce NOW on ChromeOS, compare your connection with the 15 Mbps HD, 25 Mbps Full HD, or 35 Mbps QHD targets and the less-than-80-ms latency requirement. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft lists 10 Mbps Wi-Fi or LTE as a minimum.
  4. Filter CX15 listings for 8GB RAM. Confirm the exact memory and storage variant instead of assuming the maximum specification.
  5. Read the condition and return terms. A low price is not useful if the listing is defective, missing its charger, or impossible to return.
  6. Check ports and accessories. Make sure your controller, mouse, headset, and any Ethernet adapter can be connected simultaneously as needed.
  7. Test immediately after delivery. Update ChromeOS, sign in, launch the intended service, test the exact game, and evaluate input delay and image stability during your normal play period.
  8. Return it if the use case fails. Do not keep a machine that cannot run the required software or maintain a playable stream merely because it was inexpensive.

Bottom-line recommendation by buyer type

Buyer Recommendation Reason
Student or home user wanting basic work plus occasional cloud gaming Consider the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026), preferably a verified 8GB model under $300. Its ChromeOS workflow, large screen, and potential cloud-client role fit this mixed use, provided the display, touchpad, battery, and ports are acceptable.
Cloud gamer with reliable internet and supported titles Consider the CX15 after checking GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements. The remote service carries much of the graphics workload, while the laptop supplies the browser, display, and input.
PC gamer needing local Windows installs Do not choose the CX15 solely because a listing says gaming. ChromeOS software limits and entry-level hardware make it a poor match; look for a suitable used or higher-budget Windows system.
Buyer prioritizing screen quality, battery, or extensive connectivity Compare alternatives rather than accepting the CX15 compromises. RTINGS flags the washed-out display, touchpad reliability, and battery limitations; Tom’s Guide notes limited ports.

The CX15 is the best-supported named candidate for a strict new-device $300 ceiling in the reviewed coverage, but “best under $300” means best for that constrained Chromebook use case. It does not turn a $300 laptop into a conventional local gaming machine. Buy it when your games are supported in the browser or cloud, your connection meets the service requirements, and you are comfortable with its hardware compromises.
