If you want the evocative look of a painted fantasy world, start with Pentiment for illustrated art and consequential story choices, Kena: Bridge of Spirits for fantasy exploration and action, or Ori and the Will of the Wisps for a visually distinctive platforming adventure. None is a full substitute for The Witcher 3’s open-world action-RPG mix, so the best choice depends on which part of that experience you want next.

What makes a game feel similar to The Witcher 3?

The Witcher 3 combines plot-driven role-playing, open-world freedom, quests, and player choice. Its official listing describes more than 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay, a figure published by Bandai Namco Entertainment; it is a description of The Witcher 3, not a promise about the games below. “Similar” can mean several things: a richly illustrated world, fantasy exploration, combat, branching narrative, or a large role-playing adventure. The three picks here are strongest on different parts of that list. Treat “painterly” as a visual preference, not a guarantee of Witcher-style gameplay.

How the recommendations compare

Game Art and atmosphere Exploration and combat Narrative choices How it differs from The Witcher 3
Pentiment Sixteenth-century painting and woodcut influences, brought into its page-like presentation Investigation is central; the cited official description does not establish action combat or open-world exploration Decisions have lasting consequences A historically grounded, illustrated investigation rather than an open-world action RPG
Kena: Bridge of Spirits Fantasy adventure; Steam lists a Best Visual Art award Exploration and fast-paced combat Not stated in the cited descriptions A fantasy action-adventure; the cited sources do not establish Witcher-scale open-world role-playing
Ori and the Will of the Wisps The official site’s awards list includes Best Art Direction Not stated in the cited source Its official story framing centers on bringing a family together, healing a broken land, and discovering Ori’s destiny A visually led fantasy experience, not established by the cited source as Witcher-style questing or open-world combat

Choose Pentiment for illustrated storytelling and difficult decisions

Pentiment is the clearest choice if “painterly” means art rooted in historical illustration. Obsidian says one of the game’s core goals was to preserve the distinctive art style of the sixteenth century, with characters and environments resembling paintings and woodblock prints brought to life on the page. Its story follows an investigation in which choices have lasting consequences. Obsidian Entertainment’s official Pentiment site

That combination makes it a strong fit for readers who value authored stories and meaningful decisions more than real-time combat or an expansive landscape to roam. Its historical setting and investigative focus are a substantial change of pace from Geralt’s open-world monster hunts.

Choose Kena: Bridge of Spirits for fantasy exploration and action

Kena: Bridge of Spirits follows a young Spirit Guide exploring a forgotten village and confronting a strange curse. PlayStation highlights exploration and fast-paced combat, making it the most direct pick here if you want a fantasy adventure that emphasizes moving through a world and fighting within it. It is not established by the cited listings as an equivalent to The Witcher 3 in open-world scale or role-playing depth. Steam records a September 26, 2022 release date and lists awards including Best Visual Art. Steam’s Kena: Bridge of Spirits listing

Choose Ori and the Will of the Wisps for visual direction first

Ori and the Will of the Wisps suits players whose priority is a distinctive fantasy world and storybook-like visual appeal, rather than Witcher-style questing. Moon Studios’ official site frames the story around a journey to bring a family together, heal a broken land, and discover Ori’s destiny; its awards list includes Best Art Direction. The available official description supports its visual and story framing, but does not establish it as an open-world RPG or specify combat and exploration details for a direct comparison. Check current platform listings for availability and edition information before buying.

Which game should you play first?

  • Choose Pentiment if you want historically inspired illustration and a story shaped by consequential decisions.
  • Choose Kena: Bridge of Spirits if you want fantasy exploration with fast-paced combat.
  • Choose Ori and the Will of the Wisps if visual direction and a fantasy journey matter more than matching The Witcher 3’s role-playing structure.

These are selective recommendations, not an objective ranking: the cited sources support each game’s premise, art or gameplay descriptions, but do not directly compare their art direction with The Witcher 3.
