Best Games to Play If You Like The Elder Scrolls but Find Arena Too Dated

Start with Arena Rebuilt if you want Arena’s world and adventure with a more contemporary control and display approach. It is a playable, unfinished fan reconstruction—not an official or polished remaster—and requires a compatible original copy of Arena. If you would rather stay with the official mainline series, try The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, then The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind; neither is documented here as a fix for Arena’s dated presentation.

Which game should you try first?

The choice depends on what you want to keep from Arena. Arena Rebuilt is the closest match because it reconstructs Arena itself while aiming to improve controls and display support. Daggerfall and Morrowind are the canonical next steps in the series, but their official descriptions establish their place and stories—not that they offer modernized controls or presentation.

Arena Rebuilt 0.9.9 Beta Recreates Arena, preserving its original adventure and setting. Project documentation describes a playable beta with contemporary control and display support as goals. It is unfinished; bugs and remaining presentation work are expected. Windows and Linux are listed as supported. A compatible original Arena installation is required; Bethesda game data is not included. Arena Rebuilt project
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall The direct next mainline entry, set amid a conflict in High Rock and the Iliac Bay. Bethesda’s official page identifies the game and its story; the source does not establish that the original release solves Arena’s dated-presentation problem. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind A later mainline chapter that follows Daggerfall. Bethesda identifies it as the third chapter and sequel to Daggerfall, but the cited page does not establish relative control or display comfort. Choose Arena Rebuilt for the closest Arena experience

Arena Rebuilt is the most direct answer if your issue is the original game’s dated interface rather than its setting or premise. Bethesda describes Arena as a journey by a lone prisoner across Tamriel’s famous and dangerous sites to recover the Staff of Chaos and free the Empire. Arena Rebuilt aims to retain that game while providing more contemporary controls and display support.

The project’s status page reports version 0.9.9 Beta as publicly playable on Windows and Linux, with a status date of October 3, 2026; its beta page indicates an update on October 4, 2026. Treat that as a snapshot, not a promise that the version or supported systems will remain unchanged. Read the project’s current requirements and status before installing.

What to expect from a beta

  • It is a fan reconstruction, not an official Bethesda remake.
  • The project is playable, but remains unfinished; bugs and incomplete presentation work are part of the trade-off.
  • You need a legitimate, compatible original Arena installation. The project says its download does not include Bethesda game files.
  • Check the project’s latest compatibility notes before attempting setup, especially if your copy or operating system differs from what the project supports.

Choose Daggerfall to continue the mainline series

If you want the next mainline Elder Scrolls adventure rather than a reconstruction of Arena, Daggerfall is the natural continuation. Bethesda’s official page centers its story on High Rock, the murder of the King of Daggerfall, and the Numidium. That makes it a strong choice for series continuity, but the official description cited here does not show that the original game’s presentation is more comfortable than Arena’s.

Consider Daggerfall when its place in the series and its setting matter more to you than a documented modernization. Verify the edition and available platform options for your intended setup: those details are not established by the cited official page.

Choose Morrowind for a later chapter

Morrowind moves farther along the mainline series. Bethesda Support identifies it as the third chapter and the sequel to Daggerfall. It suits readers who want to progress beyond Arena and Daggerfall, but that series position alone does not establish that it addresses the specific controls or presentation that made Arena feel dated to you.

Is The Elder Scrolls Anthology a solution?

No: it is a collectible physical box set, not a modernization of Arena. Bethesda describes The Elder Scrolls Anthology as containing the five PC games from Arena through Skyrim Legendary Edition. Current retail stock and condition are unverified, so treat it as a retrospective collection rather than a way to make Arena feel less dated. Bethesda’s Anthology page
