Its story follows an undercover police officer in a comic LEGO metropolis, but it is not free of violence or crude humor: the U.S. ESRB rates it E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor. For a different kind of exploration, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Horizon Adventures are alternatives, but neither offers the same city-and-driving mix.
The right choice depends on what “like GTA” means to the player. If it means cars and missions, start with LEGO City Undercover. If it means exploring and making things, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is a more relevant comparison. If it means traversal and action, consider LEGO Horizon Adventures. None of the three should be treated as a universal fit for every child: check the rating details, platform and play features against your family’s preferences.

What to look for in a family-friendly GTA alternative
“Like GTA” can mean several different things: driving around a city, choosing where to go, completing missions, collecting items, or getting into open-world mischief. A game can share one of those qualities without being a close substitute for the others. The three options here cover different parts of that wish list, so the best choice depends on which activities matter most.

- Open-city roaming and driving: LEGO City Undercover is the strongest match among these three.
- Exploration and building: LEGO Fortnite Odyssey centers on survival, gathering, crafting and shelter-building, rather than city missions.
- Exploration and action: LEGO Horizon Adventures offers traversal and combat, not GTA-style free-roam driving.
- Content fit: Check the age category, content descriptors and rating summary—not just whether a game uses LEGO characters or has a colorful style.
The ratings discussed below are U.S. ESRB guidance. Ratings describe content; they do not determine what is suitable for every child or family.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It also helps to separate “open world” from “GTA-like.” An open-world game can offer room to explore without providing a city, cars, a mission structure, or the freedom to move between objectives by driving. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Horizon Adventures have exploration, but they answer different requests. If a player specifically wants a place to drive around and take on city missions, LEGO City Undercover is the only one of these three with that documented combination.
At a glance: three different kinds of adventure
| Game | How it matches GTA | Main activity | U.S. ESRB guidance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LEGO City Undercover | Closest match: city roaming, driving and missions | Undercover police story, investigations, arrests, vehicles and collectibles | E10+; Cartoon Violence; Crude Humor | Includes cartoon weapons, hand-to-hand combat, vehicle collisions, slapstick and bathroom humor. |
| LEGO Fortnite Odyssey | Open-world exploration, but not a city-driving substitute | Survival, gathering food, crafting tools and weapons, and building shelters | E10+; Fantasy Violence; Users Interact and In-Game Purchases on listed consoles | Combat, online interaction and digital purchases distinguish it from a purely local adventure. |
| LEGO Horizon Adventures | Adventure exploration, but not GTA-style free-roam driving | Traversal, character interaction and combat against cultists and robotic dinosaurs | E10+; Fantasy Violence; Language | It is an action-adventure game, with fast-paced battles, explosions and mild language noted in the rating summary. |
Nintendo’s product listing for LEGO City Undercover documents the Switch edition and two-player play on a single system. ESRB rating details for the three games were accessed in 2026; Nintendo’s parent guidance on interpreting ESRB ratings was also current when accessed in 2026. The platform-specific qualifications matter: the Switch listing establishes details for that edition, while the listed-console interactive-element descriptors for LEGO Fortnite Odyssey should not be assumed to describe every platform identically.
The comparison is about activity and content, not a definitive ranking of every open-world game on the market. LEGO City Undercover is the strongest match in this group for city roaming and driving; the other two are alternatives only if the player is open to a different kind of adventure. Platform listings and rating pages can differ by edition, so verify the one that matches the device the player will use.

LEGO City Undercover: the closest match for city roaming and driving
What makes it the strongest fit
Nintendo describes LEGO City Undercover as a free-roaming metropolis with more than 20 districts, vehicles and hundreds of collectibles. Its missions involve busting car thieves, investigations and arrests. Those details make it the most direct fit here for someone who wants to drive around a city, take on missions and explore between objectives.
The difference is the premise and tone: instead of playing an adult criminal in a realistic crime world, players follow an undercover police story presented through LEGO comedy. That makes the setting more suitable for some families than GTA, but “LEGO” and “comic” do not mean violence-free. The ESRB rating is E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor. Its summary mentions cartoony firearms, hand-to-hand combat, collisions with fleeing vehicles, slapstick and bathroom humor.
That contrast is central to the recommendation. The game matches some of GTA’s structure—an explorable city, vehicles, missions and optional things to find—while changing the point of view and presentation. It is a police story in a comic LEGO setting, not a realistic crime story. However, families who object to guns, fighting, vehicle crashes or crude jokes should not assume the shift in tone resolves those concerns. Read the specific ESRB summary and decide based on the child and household, rather than relying on the franchise style alone.
What exploration and collecting add
The more-than-20-district city and hundreds of collectibles give players reasons to look around beyond the next mission. If the appeal is driving from place to place, noticing different areas and finding things along the way, those are relevant features. They are also distinct from a game whose main loop is gathering food, crafting or fighting through a sequence of encounters.
Nintendo’s listing describes car-thief-busting missions as part of the game’s premise. That makes the missions a better fit for a player who wants a recognizable objective and a city setting than for someone primarily looking for a quiet, nonviolent driving experience. ESRB’s summary specifically mentions cartoon firearms, hand-to-hand combat and collisions with fleeing vehicles, so the activities that create the action also matter when deciding whether it fits.

Co-op and platform details
Nintendo’s U.S. Switch product listing describes two-player co-op on one system. This is useful if siblings or a parent and child want to play together locally; the listing does not establish that every edition or platform has identical co-op features. The Switch edition’s listed release date is April 4, 2017. That date identifies the edition listed by Nintendo; it does not establish current stock, physical-copy availability or the details of other versions.
For a family looking specifically for an open-world couch co-op game, this is the clearest supported option among these three because Nintendo documents two-player single-system play for the Switch listing. Still, confirm that the exact edition being considered supports the arrangement you want. “Two-player co-op on one system” is the documented detail; do not infer online multiplayer, cross-platform play or identical features in another edition from that listing.
If buying for a particular system, verify the platform and edition before purchasing. Do not infer that a Switch listing guarantees a current digital offer or a physical copy in stock. A search such as “LEGO City Undercover Nintendo Switch game” can help find the platform-matched product, but check the listing itself before ordering. No current price, retailer inventory or availability is established here.
Who should choose it
Choose LEGO City Undercover first if the appeal of GTA is principally the combination of a city to roam, vehicles, missions and things to find. It is less suitable if your family’s definition of “family-friendly” excludes cartoon weapons, fighting, collisions or crude jokes. Read the ESRB summary alongside the E10+ category and decide whether those specific elements fit the child who will play.
If you are choosing for a very young child, do not treat “family-friendly” as a promise that the game is intended for every age. One common question is whether this is a free-roam driving game for a six-year-old. The supported answer is narrower: it includes city roaming and vehicles, and the U.S. rating is E10+ with Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor. The rating is guidance, not a personal recommendation for a particular child. An adult can review the summary and decide whether those descriptors suit the child’s age, temperament and family rules.
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: exploration, survival and building
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey shares the broad idea of exploring an open world, but its core loop is different from GTA’s city sandbox. ESRB describes survival play that involves gathering food, crafting and building shelters in themed lands. Combat uses weapons against enemies. The game is therefore a better match for a child who wants to explore and make things than for someone asking specifically for free-roam driving and city missions.
The distinction is practical: the available description points to a survival-and-building activity cycle, not a police story or a city full of driving missions. A player who enjoys collecting resources and creating a shelter may find that appealing. A player whose request is “let me drive around a city and do missions” may not. Open-world exploration alone is not enough to make the game a close GTA alternative.
The U.S. ESRB rating is E10+ for Fantasy Violence. On listed consoles, the game also carries the descriptors Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. Those labels are practical considerations: online interaction and purchases make this a different choice from a local, self-contained single-player experience. Check the platform’s current rating details and purchase or interaction settings before deciding; the console descriptors should not be generalized to every platform.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

For parents, the interactive-element labels are separate from the age category and violence descriptor. “Users Interact” flags online interaction, while “In-Game Purchases” flags digital purchases. They do not by themselves explain every platform setting or purchase control, so check the current platform-specific information and settings. If you want a strictly local game without online interaction or digital-purchase considerations, this may require more checking than the Switch listing for LEGO City Undercover’s local co-op.
Choose this option when survival, gathering, crafting and building are the attraction. If the child wants to drive around a city or follow police investigations, LEGO City Undercover is the closer match. If the household’s priority is avoiding combat altogether, note that the ESRB describes weapons and enemies; the fantasy presentation does not remove that content consideration.
LEGO Horizon Adventures: action-adventure rather than a city sandbox
LEGO Horizon Adventures offers exploration and traversal, along with character interaction and combat against LEGO cultists and robotic dinosaurs. Its focus is action-adventure, not the open-city driving and mission pattern that makes LEGO City Undercover the closest GTA alternative in this group.
That makes it a reasonable option for a player who wants to move through an adventure world and engage with characters, but not for someone whose main request is an open city with vehicles. Traversal and exploration are not the same as free-roam driving. Its distinction from LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is also useful: the rating description focuses on platform traversal and melee or ranged combat, while Odyssey is described in terms of survival, gathering, crafting and shelters.
The U.S. ESRB rating is E10+ for Fantasy Violence and Language. The rating summary describes fast-paced battles, explosions and use of the word “a*s.” That is more specific guidance than the broad E10+ label alone. Families who are comfortable with fantasy combat but do not need a driving sandbox may find this a more relevant alternative; families seeking a lower-conflict adventure should review the summary rather than assume the LEGO presentation means no combat.
As with the other choices, the rating details are more useful than a general impression based on the art style. The content descriptors tell you to consider fantasy violence and language, and the summary gives examples of the action and language. If those details are not a fit, its status as an adventure game does not make it a substitute for a gentler game.
How to decide for your family
Start with the activity the player actually wants
- They want cars, a city and missions: Start with LEGO City Undercover. It is the only option here whose documented features combine free-roaming city districts, vehicles and missions.
- They want to gather, craft and build: Consider LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. Treat it as a survival-and-building game, not as a crime or driving sandbox.
- They want traversal and fantasy battles: Consider LEGO Horizon Adventures. It is an action-adventure alternative, not a GTA-style city game.
Ask the player which part matters most before choosing. “I want to drive” points in a different direction from “I want to explore and build,” and both differ from “I want battles and an adventure story.” If several features matter, prioritize the activity that would make the game feel like a good choice rather than assuming one title will provide every part of GTA in a family-oriented form.
Then check content and play arrangements
- Read descriptors and the rating summary: E10+ is an age-category suggestion, while Cartoon Violence, Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence and Language identify content families may want to assess.
- Check online and purchase features: LEGO Fortnite Odyssey has Users Interact and In-Game Purchases descriptors on listed consoles. Consider whether those features fit your family’s preferences and settings.
- Confirm local co-op needs: Nintendo documents two-player single-system co-op for the Switch listing of LEGO City Undercover. Do not assume the same arrangement for another game or edition without checking its platform listing.
- Match the edition to the device: A game listing for one platform does not prove availability, features or purchase options on another.
For a couch co-op search, confirm that the number of players and the type of play match your setup. The documented Switch detail is two-player co-op on one system; it is not evidence that all three games support couch co-op. For an online play decision, consider the separate interaction descriptor and the platform’s controls rather than treating “multiplayer” as one uniform feature.

For a very young player or a family asking for a nonviolent game, be especially careful about the wording of the request. These descriptions support comparisons of content and activities, but none establishes that a game is violence-free. LEGO City Undercover includes cartoon weapons, combat and collisions; LEGO Fortnite Odyssey involves weapons and enemies; LEGO Horizon Adventures includes fantasy combat and explosions. If avoiding violence is essential, inspect the full rating summary before purchasing rather than choosing by franchise or visual style.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What ESRB ratings can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s parent guidance explains that ESRB categories suggest age suitability, content descriptors flag content that may be of interest or concern, and interactive elements point to features such as online interaction or digital purchases. Use the category as a starting point, then read the descriptors and summary for the details that matter to your household.
An E10+ rating is not a guarantee that a game will suit every child under or over a particular age. Families differ in how they view cartoon violence, humor, fantasy combat, language and online features. A child’s age is only one part of the decision; the game’s specific content and how the child will play matter too.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is rated for Fantasy Violence and Language, with the summary describing battles, explosions and mild language. These details let families compare more than the shared E10+ category.
Rating details can be edition- and platform-specific. Check the applicable rating entry for the exact version being considered rather than assume every platform has precisely the same listing.
Buying and platform checks
Before buying, identify the player’s device and the edition that matches it. Nintendo’s U.S. product listing confirms a Switch edition of LEGO City Undercover, with a listed release date of April 4, 2017, and describes its local two-player co-op. It does not establish current stock, physical-copy availability, a current sale price or the features of every other edition. Treat a store search as a way to locate a candidate listing, then check that listing’s platform and edition details.
A platform-matched search phrase for the Switch version is “LEGO City Undercover Nintendo Switch game.” That phrase is not a claim about retailer inventory or price. For LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Horizon Adventures, consult the storefront and rating information for the platform you actually use. Store availability and platform features can change, so do not rely on a listing for another device as confirmation.
