If you want something different, choose by the part of Gears you want to repeat—cover mechanics, cooperative play, science-fiction action, or longer-term character progression. No single game here reproduces every part of the Gears experience.
What makes a game feel like Gears of War?
The Gears of War team identifies the series’ core pillars as “movement, cover, weapons and enemies,” and says moving from cover to cover is central to its combat. The original game is also described as a third-person cover shooter, with a story playable solo or in split-screen and online co-op, alongside Versus multiplayer. Those are useful comparison points: a game might share Gears’ cover system without matching its co-op format, tone, or campaign structure.

For historical context, Xbox Wire names Kill Switch as an early influence on sticky cover design and identifies Uncharted and Army of Two as games with similar cover systems. That makes them useful genre neighbors, not exact substitutes.

That makes it the clearest choice when both cover combat and playing with friends matter.
For a familiar cover system outside Gears: Uncharted
Xbox Wire points to Uncharted as a third-person shooter with a cover system similar to Gears. The useful overlap is the cover mechanic; the cited comparison does not establish that an Uncharted game has Gears’ gritty science-fiction setting, campaign pacing, or cooperative options. Pick a specific entry only after checking its current platform availability.

For co-op and longer-term progression: The Division 2
Ubisoft describes The Division 2 as a shooter RPG with a campaign, co-op and PvP modes, plus progression systems. Choose it if you want to shoot with friends and build a character over time, rather than seeking a close match for Gears’ campaign structure or cover rhythm. Its appeal is the broader progression loop, not a promise that it plays like Gears in every respect.

For science-fiction story and squad combat: Mass Effect 3
EA describes Mass Effect 3 as combining cover-focused action shooting with four-player co-op missions. It overlaps with Gears on cover and science-fiction action, but it is more strongly framed as an RPG and story-driven experience. It is a better fit when squad combat and setting matter more than reproducing Gears’ structure.
Gears games and current availability
Availability and release dates can change, so check the official listing for the platform you use. As of October 3, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC with an October 6, 2026 release date; Xbox Wire also names Steam and Game Pass access. It was therefore still upcoming on that date. Recheck its listing if you are reading this after the scheduled release.

Gears of War: Reloaded has an official PlayStation page identifying it as a PS5 game and describing solo play, split-screen, and online co-op. Windows Central lists it for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. Those listings do not establish current stock, price, or the availability of a particular physical edition.

- Want the closest combat and co-op fit? Start with Gears 5.
- Want cover mechanics in a different series? Consider Uncharted, but verify the entry and platform.
- Want two-person teamwork? Look at Army of Two and check current availability.
- Want character and gear progression with co-op and PvP? Choose The Division 2.
- Want a science-fiction story and squad missions? Consider Mass Effect 3, with its RPG emphasis in mind.
Think of similarity as a set of trade-offs: cover, campaign, co-op, tone, and progression do not have to come together in the same game.
