Start with Deus Ex (2000) if you miss Bloodlines for its first-person role-playing, stealth and systemic problem solving. Choose Prey (2017) for the strongest modern immersive-sim follow-up, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 for a new World of Darkness story, Swansong for dialogue and vampire politics, or Vampyr for moral pressure around feeding. None reproduces every part of Troika’s game, so the right choice depends on which part of Bloodlines you want to keep.
Quick answer: which game should you play first?
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is unusually difficult to replace because it combines several identities: a traditional role-playing game, a first-person action game, a vampire power fantasy, a branching dialogue adventure and an immersive sim built around exploration. Steam’s official listing reflects that mixture with tags for role-playing, vampires, single-player, supernatural horror, atmosphere, dark themes, story, stealth and immersive-sim design. The recommendations below separate those qualities instead of pretending that one sequel does everything better.

| Game | Choose it when you want | What carries over from Bloodlines | Main difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deus Ex (2000) | Player-led problem solving in a first-person RPG | Skills, stealth, exploration and multiple approaches | Science-fiction conspiracy rather than vampire noir |
| Prey (2017) | A polished modern immersive sim | Dense spaces, powers, stealth and alternative solutions | Science-fiction horror with a different role-playing structure |
| Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 | World of Darkness continuity and first-person vampirism | Vampire identity, supernatural abilities and urban horror | A new production, not a restoration of Troika’s exact design |
| Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong | Dialogue, investigation and vampire politics | World of Darkness lore and consequential decisions | Less focused on first-person combat and immersive-sim traversal |
| Vampyr | Moral choices about feeding and being a vampire | Vampire identity, investigation and personal horror | Action-RPG structure rather than a first-person sandbox |
| Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption | An older, lore-oriented World of Darkness adventure | Vampire setting and role-playing themes | Earlier and more linear action-RPG design |
If you want only one recommendation, pick Deus Ex for the closest overall structure or Prey for a more modern immersive-sim experience. Pick Bloodlines 2 only when setting continuity matters more than matching every mechanical detail.
Why Bloodlines is hard to replace
The game’s appeal is not just that its protagonist is a vampire. You feed on non-player characters, move freely through environments, use vampiric powers and confront the personal-horror cost of becoming a supernatural predator. Those systems operate at the same time as conventional role-playing choices: skills affect encounters, conversations branch, stealth can avoid fights and exploration reveals alternate routes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That combination creates five useful comparison tests:
- Systemic freedom: Can you solve a problem through combat, stealth, abilities, conversation or exploration?
- Role-playing depth: Do character skills and decisions materially change how situations unfold?
- Vampire or World of Darkness identity: Does the game support the social rules, lore or moral burden associated with being a vampire?
- Gothic or noir atmosphere: Does the setting deliver dread, secrecy and urban supernatural tension rather than generic fantasy?
- Current availability: Can you play it on modern hardware and platforms without relying on an obsolete setup?
No recommendation scores perfectly on all five. The first two are why Deus Ex and Prey rank highest as structural successors; the third is why the licensed World of Darkness games remain essential alternatives.
1. Deus Ex (2000): the closest systems match
Why it fits
Deus Ex is the best choice if what you remember most is entering a first-person environment with a problem and deciding for yourself how to approach it. Skills, stealth, exploration and player choice shape encounters rather than serving as cosmetic options. Like Bloodlines, it rewards looking beyond the obvious route: a locked area, guarded objective or hostile conversation may have several workable answers.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe structural similarity matters more than the setting. Deus Ex replaces vampire clans and urban gothic horror with science-fiction conspiracies, so you should expect a different mood and fiction. What remains is the feeling that your character build and curiosity change the game’s texture. A stealth-focused player and an aggressive player can move through the same spaces in markedly different ways.
Who should choose it
- Players searching for “an immersive sim with better role-playing.”
- Readers who valued exploration and alternate solutions more than vampire lore.
- Anyone comfortable with a 2000-era presentation and design conventions.
What to expect before starting
Approach it as a historical immersive sim, not as a modern remake. Its age is part of the experience: interfaces, pacing and visual presentation are from 2000. In return, you get a design centered on agency rather than a narrow sequence of set pieces. If your priority is a contemporary audiovisual package, start with Prey instead.

2. Prey (2017): the strongest modern immersive-sim successor
Why it fits
Prey is the recommendation for players who want Bloodlines’ systemic side in a newer production. Its environments are dense, powers alter what you can do, stealth is viable and situations support multiple solutions. Exploration is not merely a way to collect items; it is part of how you understand the space and decide which route or tool to use.
That makes it a strong answer to the request for “games like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines” when the underlying request is really for a first-person RPG with freedom. The horror setting preserves tension, but the fiction is science fiction rather than urban gothic. There is no World of Darkness social framework and no vampire feeding system, so choose it for interaction design, not lore.
Why it may be a better fit than Deus Ex
Both games emphasize player solutions, but Prey offers a more modern presentation and a tighter horror atmosphere. Its powers and environmental density make experimentation immediately legible: you can test what an ability does, inspect a room and revise your plan. If you want the feeling of discovering a route through a hostile place while remaining immersed in first person, it is the easiest recommendation to start today.
Who should skip it
Skip Prey if your main reason for returning to Bloodlines is vampire politics, clan identity or dialogue-driven World of Darkness role-play. Those priorities point toward Swansong or one of the other licensed games.
3. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2: the closest setting continuation
What it offers
Bloodlines 2 is the obvious choice when the words “World of Darkness” matter more than a one-to-one mechanical match. Paradox describes the player character, Phyre, as an elder vampire who awakens in Seattle in 2024; the character is also known as the Nomad. That premise keeps the central fantasy intact: you are not investigating vampires from the outside, but navigating an urban world while managing the consequences of being one.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

The game is confirmed for PC through Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store, as well as Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Those platforms make it the most straightforward modern option for someone who wants a current first-person vampire RPG rather than an older PC title.

Set expectations correctly
A setting continuation is not automatically a design continuation. Bloodlines 2 is a new production, so do not buy it expecting Troika’s exact pacing, quest structure or technical character. Its value for a returning fan is continuity of universe, vampire perspective and modern presentation. Evaluate it on those terms instead of treating it as a repaired edition of the 2004 game.
Best for
- Readers who want another vampire RPG with choices in the World of Darkness.
- Players who prefer first-person presentation and a contemporary console or PC release.
- Fans for whom setting continuity outweighs reproducing every immersive-sim interaction.
4. Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong: lore and dialogue first
Why it fits
Swansong is the right follow-up when the strongest memory of Bloodlines is its conversations, investigations and vampire society. It is built around World of Darkness role-play, political tension and narrative decisions rather than first-person combat or free-form traversal. That makes it a different kind of successor: closer in subject and social fiction, farther away in moment-to-moment action.
Choose it when you want to examine motives, gather information and make decisions whose importance comes from the setting and characters. The appeal is not finding a vent, hacking a terminal or improvising a combat route; it is inhabiting a vampire within a political and investigative story.
Availability caution
Platform and edition details can vary by storefront and region. Check the current listing for the system you use before buying, particularly if you need a specific console edition or PC store. That verification matters more here than citing a universal platform list.

Who should choose it
- Players who rank vampire politics and dialogue above action.
- Fans interested in World of Darkness lore without requiring a first-person sandbox.
- Readers who want narrative decisions to drive the experience.
5. Vampyr: vampire identity and moral pressure
Why it fits
Vampyr focuses on the contradiction at the heart of the fantasy: you need to feed, but feeding has moral and practical consequences. Investigation and personal decisions are central to inhabiting a vampire rather than simply controlling a supernatural fighter. That makes it a useful answer for anyone asking for another vampire RPG with choices.
The resemblance to Bloodlines is thematic rather than structural. Vampyr uses an action-RPG framework, so expect a different rhythm from Bloodlines’ first-person immersive-sim spaces. You are not selecting it for the same degree of stealth traversal or environmental improvisation as Deus Ex or Prey.
How to decide
Pick Vampyr when the question “Who should I feed on, and what will that cost?” sounds more appealing than “Which route through this level should I take?” Its strongest connection to Bloodlines is the attempt to make vampirism an ethical burden, not just a collection of powers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption: an older World of Darkness option
Why it remains relevant
Redemption is worth considering as a historical or lore-oriented follow-up. It belongs to the same broad vampire setting and can provide context for how licensed World of Darkness games approached role-playing before Bloodlines. It is especially useful for a fan who wants more of the universe and does not require a contemporary presentation.
The critical difference
Its earlier, more linear action-RPG structure is the reason it ranks below the other recommendations for most Bloodlines players. Do not expect a first-person sandbox, the same free movement through environments or an equivalent range of systemic solutions. Think of it as a historical companion to the setting, not a mechanical replacement.

Who should play it

- Fans willing to accept dated design in exchange for more licensed vampire fiction.
Choose by the part of Bloodlines you miss most
| Your priority | First choice | Alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stealth, skills and alternate solutions | Deus Ex | Prey | Both treat spaces as systems you can approach in different ways. |
| Modern immersive-sim presentation | Prey | Deus Ex | Prey keeps the systemic design while offering a newer production. |
| World of Darkness continuity | Bloodlines 2 | Swansong | The former is a modern first-person vampire RPG; the latter emphasizes lore and decisions. |
| Vampire politics and investigation | Swansong | Redemption | Choose dialogue-led role-play or an older, more linear setting adventure. |
| Feeding, morality and personal horror | Vampyr | Bloodlines 2 | Vampyr makes feeding the central dilemma; Bloodlines 2 provides a newer licensed vampire perspective. |
| Historical World of Darkness material | Redemption | Swansong | One is an older action-RPG; the other is a more recent narrative investigation game. |
Replaying Bloodlines on a modern PC
You may not need a new game at all. GOG’s release of Bloodlines includes third-party technical fixes intended to address serious problems in the original version and provides an offline installer. That makes it a practical starting point for a replay, especially if your previous copy was an unpatched disc or an old digital installation.
Before troubleshooting individual crashes or broken quests, confirm which build you installed and whether its included fixes are active. The unofficial patch has historically been important to the game’s stability, but community-maintained software can change over time. Keep a backup of saves before replacing files, and use the support information associated with the current build rather than assuming that instructions for an older release still apply.
A sensible replay checklist
- Install the current supported release from your chosen store.
- Read the store’s notes to determine which third-party fixes are already included.
- Start a fresh save after changing major patch or mod files; do not assume an old save is unaffected.
- If a quest or launch problem appears, reproduce it on a clean installation before adding additional modifications.
- Keep the original installer or offline backup so you can restore a known working state.
A practical order for playing them
For most returning fans, the most informative sequence is Deus Ex, then Prey, followed by either Bloodlines 2 or Swansong. The first game shows where Bloodlines’ immersive-sim structure came from; the second demonstrates how that structure can work in a modern production. The licensed titles then let you decide whether your priority is a new first-person vampire adventure or deeper World of Darkness storytelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you have limited time, use this shorter route:
- Pick Prey for systemic environments and powers.
- Pick Bloodlines 2 for a current World of Darkness vampire protagonist.
- Pick Swansong for dialogue, investigation and political consequences.
- Pick Vampyr for feeding decisions and moral pressure.
- Pick Deus Ex when you are willing to trade modern presentation for foundational immersive-sim design.
- Pick Redemption when historical setting material matters more than mechanical similarity.
Final recommendation
There is no single “best game after Bloodlines” because its appeal is split across systems, setting and tone. Deus Ex is the closest structural match, Prey is the strongest modern immersive-sim successor, Bloodlines 2 is the clearest setting continuation, Swansong is the dialogue-and-lore choice, Vampyr is the moral vampire alternative and Redemption is the historical option. Start with the description of Bloodlines that sounds most like your own reason for loving it.
