If you want a modern game that most directly carries Suikoden’s legacy, start with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Its Steam listing calls it “a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series,” though it is a separate game, not a Suikoden sequel. If you have not played the first two Suikoden games, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is the most direct next step.
Which game should you play after Suikoden?
Choose based on what you want to continue. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is the clearest pick for a modern successor; the remaster is the better choice if you want more of the original series itself. Suikoden’s appeal combines several elements—its recruitable 108 Stars of Destiny, rune magic, a home base that develops, army battles, and story—so another RPG may share one part without matching the whole experience.

| Your priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A modern game explicitly linked to Suikoden | Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes | Steam describes it as a spiritual successor and identifies it as a story-rich, single-player RPG. That establishes lineage, not a direct continuation. Steam game listing |
| Playing Suikoden I or II for the first time | Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars | Konami’s collection brings the first two games together. Konami product page |
| Recruitable characters | Look for games that make recruitment a defining system | Suikoden’s official material identifies the 108 Stars of Destiny; a large party alone does not guarantee the same recruitment structure. Konami product page |
| A headquarters and large-scale conflict | Compare base development and army-battle systems | Konami specifically names home-base management and Army Battles among the returning systems in the remaster. Konami release announcement |
Why Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is the closest successor recommendation
The strongest evidence for choosing Hundred Heroes is its own Steam description: “A spiritual successor to the Suikoden series.” That makes it a natural first recommendation when the request is specifically for a modern game in Suikoden’s lineage. Steam also categorizes it as a story-rich, single-player RPG. View the Steam listing.

If what you most want is the original series’ particular mix of recruitment, base management, and army battles, do not assume that a successor label means every mechanic or story element is identical.

When Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is the better choice
If you have not played Suikoden I and Suikoden II, the remaster is the direct way to continue with those games rather than move to a related RPG. Konami says the collection brings back both titles and describes the series’ 108 Stars of Destiny. The release announcement also notes that Suikoden II takes place three years after the first game. Match the next game to the part of Suikoden you want to keep
If recruitment is the main draw
Think beyond the number of characters. Konami’s official description centers on the 108 Stars of Destiny gathering to shape history. When considering another RPG, check whether recruitment is a substantial, recurring system with a role in the story or home base, rather than simply a large roster of party members. Konami’s Suikoden description.
If you want a base that grows
Look for a headquarters that changes as allies join, not merely a place to visit between missions. Konami identifies home-base management as one of the systems in the remaster announcement. A game that shares this feature may still differ in how recruitment, exploration, and combat connect to the base. Konami’s system overview.

- Explore a vast ocean environment by ship, in a beautifully detailed 3D game world
- Multiple battles with different tactics - Dynamic sea-based strategy battles, one-on-one combat and
- Discover the 108 Stars of Destiny on your adventure
If large-scale battles matter
Check whether the game includes army or formation-level battles alongside ordinary party combat. Konami specifically names Army Battles as a Suikoden system; turn-based party combat by itself is not the same match. Konami’s system overview.
If you are looking for political storytelling
Separate narrative tone and subject matter from mechanics. Konami’s remaster materials describe a story shaped by the Stars of Destiny and conflict, but that does not establish that every RPG with a large cast offers equivalent political depth. Look at each game’s own description and story premise rather than treating genre resemblance as proof.
