If you want another third-person game built around moving between cover and fighting, start with Gears of War: Reloaded for more of the same franchise feel. For other cover-shooter lineages, try Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune or Army of Two. Choose The Last of Us Part I for a more story-led action game, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition if you want squad combat alongside role-playing systems.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and Xbox lists it as included with Game Pass. Check Xbox’s E-Day listing for current release and availability details.

Which game should you play after E-Day?
| Game | Best fit | How it relates to cover-based action |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: Reloaded | You want to stay with Gears | Closest franchise match; verify the edition and platform that suit you. |
| Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune | You want another third-person cover-shooter lineage | Xbox Wire identifies its cover system as similar to Gears’; that does not mean its tone or pacing is the same. |
| Army of Two | You want another shooter with Gears-like cover mechanics | Also cited by Xbox Wire for a similar cover system; check the specific edition for platform and co-op details. |
| The Last of Us Part I | You want a focused, story-led action game | An adjacent narrative choice, not a direct equivalent to Gears’ cover-shooter emphasis. |
| Mass Effect Legendary Edition | You want science-fiction squad combat and character abilities | Uses weapons, abilities, squad action, and cover, with broader role-playing systems. |
The best fit depends on what you want to preserve: cover movement, a focused action campaign, a particular story style, or a larger squad-and-role-playing framework. This comparison is about those broad design traits, not a guarantee that the games share the same pacing or feel.

Gears of War: Reloaded
If the appeal is specifically the Gears setting and combat identity, the most direct next step is another entry in the series: Gears of War: Reloaded. It keeps the recommendation within the franchise rather than asking you to adapt to another series’ interpretation of cover action. Confirm platform availability and edition details with the store where you plan to play; the sources for this guide do not establish them consistently.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Xbox Wire’s guide to third-person shooters names Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as a game whose cover system is similar to Gears of War’s. It is a useful pick if you want to follow the broader lineage of third-person shooters built around taking cover, but the cited comparison is about mechanics—not a claim that the games share Gears’ tone, combat rhythm, or campaign structure.
Army of Two
Xbox Wire also points to Army of Two as using a cover system similar to Gears’. Consider it when that basic movement-and-cover loop matters more than staying in the Gears universe. The available source does not verify the platform, edition, or co-op features of a particular release, so check those specifics before choosing a copy.

Choose a different emphasis: story or squad systems
The Last of Us Part I
The Last of Us Part I is a better fit if what you want next is a story-focused third-person action experience rather than a close mechanical substitute for Gears. PlayStation describes it as a remake of the original single-player story, rebuilt for PS5. That makes it an adjacent recommendation for players who value a focused narrative; the description does not establish it as a direct Gears-style cover shooter.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition
For science-fiction combat that puts a squad beside the player, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the broader alternative. BioWare’s catalogue describes squad action with advanced weapons, special abilities, and cover. Its role-playing systems make it a different proposition from a focused cover shooter: choose it if you want character and squad systems as well as firefights, rather than nonstop cover-based action.
How to narrow the choice
- Want to remain in Gears? Start with Gears of War: Reloaded.
- Want another game explicitly connected to Gears’ cover-shooter lineage? Look at Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune or Army of Two.
- Want the story to take priority? Pick The Last of Us Part I.
- Want squad combat, abilities, and a larger role-playing framework? Try Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

What E-Day promises—and what it does not settle
The official Gears of War: E-Day gameplay update emphasizes movement, cover, weapons, and enemies. In a June 7, 2026, Xbox Wire feature, E-Day design director Matt Searcy described its aim as: “feels like Gears but plays like new — a return to the feelings we had when we played the original games, now reimagined, evolved, and enhanced with the power of a new engine.” That is the design team’s statement of intent, not independent evidence that any one of these recommendations will feel identical to E-Day.
