Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you have just finished the original Sonic Adventure, start with Sonic Adventure 2. It is the closest follow-up because it keeps the series’ multi-character storytelling and Chao raising while dividing its stages among high-speed action, treasure hunting and lock-on shooting. Choose Sonic Frontiers instead if you want a modern Sonic game built around open-zone exploration, puzzles, combat and platforming. For a non-Sonic alternative, Freedom Planet 2 offers fast movement, several playable characters, hub areas and a campaign-driven adventure.
The right choice depends on which part of Sonic Adventure you want to preserve: its connected story, varied character abilities, hub-and-stage structure, Chao Garden or its sense of speed. The guide below separates those priorities so you can choose without mistaking a modern reinterpretation for a direct sequel.

Quick picks
| Game | Choose it for | How it follows Sonic Adventure | Structure and activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonic Adventure 2 | The closest overall follow-up | Continues the multi-character approach and Chao raising | Interwoven Hero and Dark stories; action, treasure hunting and lock-on shooting |
| Sonic Frontiers | Modern exploration and platforming | Uses Sonic’s movement in a substantially different format | Open-zone map with challenges, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages |
| Freedom Planet 2 | A non-Sonic fast platformer | Shares the emphasis on speed, characters, hubs and campaign progression, but is not a Sonic game | Several playable characters, hub areas and a narrative campaign |
These are fit-based recommendations, not a claim that one game reproduces every part of Sonic Adventure. The first game is a particularly unusual combination of Adventure Fields, separate Action Stages, six playable characters with distinct abilities and stories, and a Chao Garden. SEGA’s description of the original is available on its Sonic Adventure game page.

Before choosing a follow-up, identify the feature you will miss most. The original is not only a 3D speed game. Its Adventure Fields act as connective spaces where story events and routes lead into Action Stages. Character campaigns change how those stages are approached, and the Chao Garden provides a separate, slower activity for raising and caring for Chao. A recommendation that preserves only speed may therefore feel wrong if your favorite part was exploration between stages or switching viewpoints.
#1 Best Overall
- 12 playable characters each with different story lines.
- A wide array of game modes including various styles of gameplay.
- Supports two player split screen so that you can share the fun with a friend.
If the story and cast mattered most
Look first at Sonic Adventure 2. Its Hero and Dark storylines are interwoven, so the campaign is designed around contrasting sides rather than one uninterrupted route. It also retains the idea that different playable characters contribute different kinds of stages.
If movement and discovery mattered most
Sonic Frontiers is the larger change. Instead of Adventure Fields leading into a fixed set of Action Stages, its open-zone world puts exploration, challenges and optional activities around the map. It remains a Sonic-centered platforming game, but the spaces are organized to encourage finding activities rather than simply following a character campaign from hub to stage.
If you want a different cast but a familiar rhythm
Freedom Planet 2 is the editorial alternative. PC Gamer’s PC platformer guide describes it as a fast game with multiple playable characters, hub areas and a narrative campaign. Those shared ingredients make it useful for someone seeking the adventure format rather than Sonic continuity; it should not be treated as an official equivalent or as part of the Sonic series. See PC Gamer’s platformer guide for that description.
Sonic Adventure 2: the closest follow-up
Sonic Adventure 2 is the best default recommendation because it preserves the most distinctive design ideas at once. SEGA describes six playable characters, interwoven Hero and Dark storylines, three broad gameplay types and a continuing Chao-raising feature on its official game page. That combination gives you continuity without asking you to replay the original’s exact stage layouts.
How its campaign is organized
The Hero and Dark campaigns present the same broad conflict from opposing sides. Rather than placing every character in one linear sequence, the game interweaves those storylines. This is a good fit if you enjoyed seeing the events of Sonic Adventure through several characters, but it also means the pacing alternates between perspectives. Expect a campaign built around contrast and parallel progression, not one character’s uninterrupted tour.

What you actually do in the stages
The sequel separates its stages into three broad forms:
- High-speed 3D action: stages built around rapid movement and platforming.
- Treasure hunting: stages focused on searching environments rather than simply racing forward.
- Lock-on shooting: stages that use ranged targeting as their central interaction.
This spread is the main reason the game feels like a natural continuation rather than a collection of more speed stages. If you liked changing abilities and perspectives in the original, the three formats provide a similar sense of variety while giving each stage type its own rules.
Why the Chao feature makes a difference
The Chao-raising feature returns, giving you an activity outside the main stages. That matters because the original’s Chao Garden was one of its defining side systems. In the sequel, you can move between campaign progress and Chao raising instead of treating the story as the only reason to return.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if you want the most direct narrative and mechanical continuation.
- Choose it if you want multiple character viewpoints and clearly different stage types.
- Choose it if Chao raising is an important part of what made the original memorable.
- Choose something else if you specifically want a seamless open world or a modern control model; those are not the sequel’s defining changes.
Platforms and availability
SEGA’s Sonic Channel platform listing names Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Steam for Sonic Adventure 2; consult the platform listing before buying. A listed platform does not guarantee that a particular regional store still sells the game, that a physical edition is available, or that a release works on your current hardware through backward compatibility. Check the storefront and edition for your country at the time of purchase.
Sonic Frontiers: choose exploration over direct continuity
Sonic Frontiers is the strongest option when you want Sonic to move through larger spaces and discover activities at your own pace. SEGA’s November 8, 2022 release announcement describes an open-zone world containing challenges, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages. The game therefore combines free-form exploration with shorter, more focused stages rather than reproducing the original’s Adventure Fields and Action Stages. Read the SEGA release announcement for the stated feature and platform details.

How the structure differs
In Sonic Adventure, the hub-like Adventure Fields connect you to distinct Action Stages. Frontiers brings more of those activities into an open-zone map. You can encounter a puzzle, battle or traversal challenge while exploring, then move into a Cyber Space stage for a more concentrated platforming sequence. This arrangement is less about selecting a character campaign and more about deciding which activity to pursue next.

Control styles
The game offers two control styles. One favors precise platforming, while the other favors traditional high-speed controls. That choice is useful if you found older 3D Sonic games difficult to tune to your preferred level of precision. Select the style that matches what you want from your first playthrough: careful jumps and positioning, or a more familiar sense of momentum and speed.
What to expect from the activity mix
- Exploration: travel through the open-zone environment and locate activities.
- Challenges and puzzles: solve environmental tasks that break up traversal.
- Combat: fight enemies while moving through the zone.
- Side quests: pursue optional objectives rather than only the main route.
- Cyber Space: enter focused stages that provide a more traditional platforming format.
This is the right choice if you want the broadest change from the original while remaining within Sonic’s world. It is not the right choice if your priority is the sequel’s interwoven character story or a returning Chao-raising system.
Platforms and regional checks
SEGA’s November 2022 release announcement lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC Steam. PlayStation also maintains a Sonic Frontiers page for PS4 and PS5. Confirm the edition, region, storage requirements and current store status on your platform before purchasing; the announcement’s list does not promise that every edition remains stocked everywhere.
Freedom Planet 2: a non-Sonic alternative with hubs and characters
If you want to leave Sonic behind without leaving fast platforming behind, Freedom Planet 2 is the most relevant alternative in this shortlist. PC Gamer’s guide identifies its combination of fast movement, multiple playable characters, hub areas and a narrative campaign. Those elements echo the broad appeal of Sonic Adventure: you have a cast with different play styles, a world that connects individual stages or missions, and a campaign that gives the movement a reason to matter.
What carries over from the Adventure formula
- Speed: movement is central rather than incidental.
- Character choice: several playable characters provide different approaches.
- Hubs: connective areas give the campaign more shape than a purely linear stage list.
- Narrative progression: the campaign provides context for the levels and destinations.
What does not carry over
This is not a Sonic title, does not continue Sonic’s story and should not be bought expecting Chao raising or the exact Adventure Field-to-Action Stage structure. Its value is in the shared design priorities, not in brand or plot continuity. Treat it as a genre recommendation for a player who wants another character-driven, fast platformer.
Where to verify it
The cited recommendation comes from PC Gamer’s “best platformers on PC” guide. Check the current PC store page and system requirements for your region before purchase, since the guide is an editorial recommendation rather than a complete, date-stamped availability list.

A practical buying checklist
Use this checklist before committing to a game, especially if you are buying an older release.
- Identify your target platform. Adventure 2’s cited list includes Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Steam. Frontiers’ cited 2022 list includes PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC Steam.
- Check your regional storefront. A platform named by the publisher may have different sales status, editions or compatibility in your country.
- Decide whether continuity matters. Pick Adventure 2 for the closest sequel relationship; pick Frontiers or Freedom Planet 2 when a structural or genre change is the point.
- Match the side activity to your habits. Chao raising points toward Adventure 2; open-world tasks and puzzles point toward Frontiers; campaign hubs and character variety point toward Freedom Planet 2.
- Confirm the edition before paying. Store listings can distinguish digital, physical, regional and backward-compatible versions even when the publisher’s platform list is broader.
How to make the transition from Sonic Adventure smoother
Start with the feature you will miss, not the newest release
Players often choose a newer game because it is easier to find, then discover that its structure is unrelated to what they enjoyed. If you remember the original primarily for its character campaigns and Chao Garden, begin with Adventure 2. If you remember running through wide spaces and discovering what to do next, Frontiers is the more relevant experiment. If what you want is simply fast, character-based platforming outside Sonic, use Freedom Planet 2.

Expect a change in pacing
Adventure 2 alternates between its Hero and Dark sides and between three gameplay types. Frontiers asks you to move between open-zone exploration and Cyber Space stages. Freedom Planet 2 uses hubs and a campaign rather than Sonic’s established cast. Going in with the correct expectation prevents a difference in structure from feeling like a technical failure.
Use a first-playthrough rule
For Adventure 2, play enough of both sides to understand how the interwoven campaign works before deciding which stage type you prefer. For Frontiers, spend time in the open zone before judging the Cyber Space stages in isolation; the game is designed around the contrast. For Freedom Planet 2, try more than one playable character if you are looking for the multi-character appeal that originally brought you to Sonic Adventure.
Final recommendation
Buy or play Sonic Adventure 2 first when “after Sonic Adventure” means “give me the closest next chapter.” Its interwoven Hero and Dark stories, three distinct gameplay forms and returning Chao feature address the original’s most unusual combination of ideas. Choose Sonic Frontiers when you want Sonic’s movement in a modern open-zone framework, and choose Freedom Planet 2 when you want a non-Sonic campaign with speed, hubs and multiple characters. Verify your platform, region and current listing in every case, particularly for the older releases.
