The right follow-up depends on which part of Arkham Knight you are trying to preserve: superhero identity, free-roaming movement, predator-style stealth, close-quarters combat or the ability to play alone. The guide below separates those priorities instead of treating every open-world action game as an Arkham substitute.

1. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered: the closest superhero substitute
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is the safest first choice when what you loved was the fantasy of being a capable superhero in a busy city. It places an experienced Peter Parker in an open-world New York while a new villain threatens people close to him. Like Arkham Knight, its appeal comes from moving through a recognizable urban environment, finding crimes and activities, and responding as a larger-than-life hero rather than an ordinary action-game protagonist.
Why it matches Arkham Knight
- Traversal is a constant activity. Spider-Man’s movement is built around crossing the city quickly, so travelling between objectives feels like part of the game rather than dead time.
- The city supports crime-fighting. Optional activities let you act as a street-level protector between story missions, matching the immediate “see trouble, intervene” rhythm of Batman’s patrols.
- The tone stays heroic. You get another comic-book protagonist, a civilian identity and a city whose people are affected by the conflict.
Where it differs
Spider-Man is not a Batman reskin. The movement is aerial and momentum-based rather than rooftop gliding, and the combat is built around Spider-Man’s powers and agility. Stealth exists, but it is not the defining framework of every encounter. If your favorite Arkham Knight moments were predator rooms and silent takedowns, choose Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro or Hitman instead.

Platforms and edition
PlayStation describes this as an updated version of the 2018 PlayStation 4 game for PlayStation 5 and PC. Select the Remastered edition specifically; the edition name distinguishes it from the original release and is the version covered by this recommendation.
2. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut: the best stealth-and-melee change of setting
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut preserves the combination of open-world discovery, stealth approaches and close-quarters combat while replacing comic-book Gotham with feudal Japan. You play through Tsushima and Iki Island using a katana, bow attacks and stealth tactics. It is the strongest choice when you want Arkham Knight’s broad activity mix but are ready for a substantially different atmosphere and combat vocabulary.
Why Arkham players respond to it
- Stealth is an intentional option. You can approach situations tactically instead of always entering a direct fight.
- Melee has a deliberate rhythm. Katana encounters reward reading opponents and choosing the appropriate response, making each confrontation feel more measured than a conventional button-mashing brawl.
- Exploration has a clear sense of place. The world of Tsushima and the additional Iki Island content provide a large setting to cross, investigate and revisit.
Who should choose it
Pick Ghost of Tsushima when you want to keep the stealth-plus-sword-fighting loop but do not need a superhero protagonist. It is less suitable if the central attraction was Batman, DC continuity or gadget-led combat. It is also a solo experience, so it does not replace Arkham Knight with a co-op option.
PS4, PS5 and physical-edition details
The Director’s Cut is available for PS5 and PS4. The official product information documents PS4 disc editions and PS5 upgrade paths, so check the exact disc, console and regional upgrade conditions before buying a physical copy. The Director’s Cut name matters because it identifies the edition containing the expanded package rather than the original base release.
3. Middle-earth: Shadow of War: the combat-first follow-up
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the recommendation for players who remember Arkham Knight primarily as a flowing melee game. GamesRadar’s action-games guide specifically connects Shadow of War’s combat and exploration with the Batman: Arkham experience, while identifying its major distinction: the Nemesis system creates recurring rivalries with Uruks.
Why its combat is the draw
The familiar part is the emphasis on chaining attacks, reacting to threats and moving through groups of enemies with a counter-driven rhythm. The difference is that opponents can become recurring characters in your personal story. An Uruk who defeats you, escapes or returns with a new grudge can turn an otherwise routine encounter into an ongoing rivalry.
What you give up compared with Arkham
- You are not playing a superhero in a modern city.
- The setting is Middle-earth rather than Gotham, so the visual language, enemies and objectives are fantasy-based.
- Its strongest match is melee combat and enemy relationships, not Batman’s detective identity or gadget-focused stealth.
Choose Shadow of War when the question you are really asking is, “What has the most satisfying Arkham-style fighting?” Choose Spider-Man instead when the answer is, “What lets me feel like another famous superhero in a living city?”

Gotham Knights is the direct setting match. Its official site describes it as “an open-world, action RPG set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet.” The playable Batman Family consists of Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin. You can play alone or with one other hero, making it the natural choice if you want DC characters and a partner rather than a completely new universe.
Why it fits
- Gotham remains the setting. The city, villains and Batman Family identity preserve the broadest piece of Arkham Knight’s fiction.
- There are four heroes. Each character gives the campaign a different Batman-family perspective instead of asking you to repeat Batman’s exact role.
- Co-op is optional. You can play solo or invite one other player, so the game works for both a traditional single-player run and a shared campaign.
Important expectations
Gotham Knights is described as an open-world action RPG, not as another Arkham game. Its progression and combat structure are built around the four heroes, so the feel is not identical to Batman’s counter-and-gadget rhythm. Stealth also depends more on the character and encounter than it does on Arkham Knight’s dedicated predator-room design.

Choose it if Gotham and the Batman Family are non-negotiable, or if two-player play matters more than reproducing Arkham Knight’s exact combat. Choose Shadow of War or Spider-Man if your priority is a closer mechanical match.
5. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: stealth and precision for experienced players
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice matches the stealth-and-mobility side of Arkham Knight while demanding much more precision in direct fights. PlayStation describes it as a stealth-driven action RPG with deep sword combat, prosthetic-arm attachments, grappling-hook traversal and a large interconnected world.
What carries over
- Stealth-first approaches: you can use positioning and concealment before committing to combat.
- Vertical movement: the grappling hook adds a mobility layer that makes routes through the world part of the challenge.
- Tools with tactical purpose: prosthetic-arm attachments provide alternatives to simply attacking with a sword.
The crucial combat difference
Sekiro replaces Arkham’s broad counter flow with posture-based sword duels. Success depends on timing, pressure and recognizing attacks, so it is a better recommendation for someone who wants to master a demanding combat system than for someone seeking a relaxed superhero power trip. Expect a sharper learning curve and fewer moments where you can safely improvise your way through a crowd.
6. Hitman: World of Assassination: choose this when stealth matters most
Hitman: World of Assassination is less like Arkham Knight in melee combat but stronger as a pure stealth sandbox. PlayStation describes it as a freeform experience based on guile, deception, brute force, detailed locations, player choice and mission replay value.
Why stealth-focused Arkham fans should consider it
- Planning replaces brawling. You study a location, identify opportunities and decide how to reach the target.
- Disguise and deception matter. The game supports infiltration through social and environmental manipulation rather than relying only on silent takedowns.
- Replayability is built in. Returning to a location with a new plan is part of the design, not merely a way to repeat a completed mission.
Hitman does not provide Arkham’s continuous city patrol or flowing melee encounters. Choose it when “Batman-style stealth” means observing a space, using gadgets and improvising an infiltration. Choose Sekiro or Shadow of War when fighting groups is equally important.
7. Assassin’s Creed Shadows: open-world stealth with two protagonists
Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers a larger historical setting and two complementary ways to play. PlayStation describes an open-world game in which you switch between a shinobi assassin and a samurai, with stealth options, freer exploration and a customizable hideout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How the two characters change your approach
- The shinobi: the natural choice when you want concealment, infiltration and a stealth-led route.
- The samurai: the alternative when you want a more direct, combat-oriented approach.
- Switching between them: lets you match the character to the problem instead of forcing every mission into one style.
The result is a good fit for players who liked Arkham Knight’s open-world freedom but want a broader historical world and more explicit contrast between stealth and direct combat. It is not a superhero substitute, and its systems are more expansive than Arkham’s focused Gotham patrol loop.

If you want another superhero
Choose Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. It combines a famous hero, an open city, traversal and crime-fighting activities more directly than the other options.
If you want Batman-style combat
Choose Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Its combat and exploration are explicitly associated with the Arkham audience, and the Nemesis system adds rivalries that Arkham Knight does not structure in the same way.

Recommended Free Tools
If you want open-world exploration and close combat in a new setting
Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. It keeps stealth, exploration and melee together while giving you Tsushima and Iki Island instead of Gotham.
If you want Gotham and co-op
Choose Gotham Knights. It is the only recommendation here built around Gotham’s Batman Family and solo or two-hero play.
If you want a larger historical world with flexible playstyles
Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The shinobi-and-samurai structure gives you a clearer stealth-versus-direct-combat choice than Arkham Knight.
Platform and edition checks before you buy
These games are not interchangeable across every console, and an edition name can change what you receive. Confirm the platform shown for your copy and whether you are buying a base release, a remaster or a Director’s Cut.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered: the recommendation is the updated version for PlayStation 5 and PC.
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut: available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4; physical PS4 discs and PS5 upgrade routes have specific conditions.
- Gotham Knights: check the current console or PC store listing for the platform you own, especially if you intend to use co-op.
- All other choices: verify the store listing for your system and the exact edition before purchase, because availability can vary by platform and region.
Common mistakes when choosing an Arkham follow-up
Picking an open world when you really want stealth
A large map does not guarantee predator-style encounters. Spider-Man and Assassin’s Creed Shadows emphasize traversal and exploration; Hitman and Sekiro are better if the act of avoiding detection is the central requirement.
Expecting every counter-based game to feel like Batman
Shadow of War is the closest combat recommendation, but it changes the setting and adds the Nemesis system. Sekiro demands posture management and precise sword timing. Ghost of Tsushima uses katana and bow tactics. Treat “similar combat” as a starting point, not a promise that the controls or enemy behavior are identical.
Buying for Gotham when you actually want Batman
Gotham Knights keeps the city and Batman Family but does not place you in the exact role or structure of Arkham Knight. If the specific fantasy is Batman’s solo detective-predator loop, Spider-Man is a stronger superhero substitute and Shadow of War is a stronger combat substitute.
Ignoring the solo or co-op requirement
Gotham Knights supports solo play or one other hero. The other recommendations described here are designed around solo play, so choose Gotham Knights only when that two-player option is useful rather than assuming every title offers it.
Final recommendation
For most Arkham Knight players, begin with Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered: it preserves the superhero identity, open city, movement and crime-fighting fantasy. If combat is the deciding factor, play Middle-earth: Shadow of War. If stealth and a serious melee system matter more than the setting, choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Pick Gotham Knights only when staying in Gotham or playing with another hero outweighs the need for an identical Arkham-style rhythm.
