Subnautica: Below Zero is the closest game to Subnautica 2 because it combines first-person alien-ocean exploration, survival systems, habitat construction, crafting and a connected mystery. If you have not played the series, start with the original Subnautica. Choose Raft for cooperative ocean survival, No Man’s Sky for a much larger exploration sandbox with underwater bases, or The Planet Crafter for slower, calmer crafting and terraforming on land.

That order makes sense because Subnautica 2 is not simply another map for the earlier games. It is an Early Access underwater survival adventure on an all-new alien world, with solo play and co-op for up to four players. The alternatives below are ranked by how much of that specific experience they preserve.

What Subnautica 2 is setting out to deliver

Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure set on a new alien world rather than Planet 4546B, the setting of the earlier games. Its core promise is familiar to series fans: explore an ocean, gather materials, craft equipment, build a custom base and uncover hidden mysteries. The game supports solo play and cooperative sessions with up to four players.

Steam currently lists it as an Early Access survival game with underwater exploration, horror, open-world, base-building and co-op tags. Early Access status matters when choosing an alternative: systems, story content, multiplayer behavior and performance can change during development. The most useful comparison is therefore about the design identity Subnautica 2 establishes, not a claim that every feature is already final.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The features that define the target experience

  • First-person underwater exploration: the environment is the main subject, with biomes, caves and discoveries arranged around diving.
  • Survival and preparation: players gather resources and make tools that allow them to travel farther and investigate more dangerous areas.
  • Constructed shelter: a custom habitat is both a practical base and a way to express personal building choices.
  • Layered mystery: exploration is connected to questions about the alien world rather than being only a resource circuit.
  • Solo or small-group play: the official multiplayer limit is four players, making cooperation part of the design without turning the game into a massive online world.

The best alternative depends on which of those elements you value most. No other choice below reproduces all of them at once, so the explanations distinguish a direct match from a game that only shares one or two important ideas.

Quick comparison

Game Primary environment Building style Exploration structure Best for
Subnautica: Below Zero Frozen alien ocean, with icy areas above and below the surface Habitats and survival equipment Biome progression, deeper dives and connected series lore The closest overall match to Subnautica 2
Subnautica Alien ocean with reefs, volcanoes and deep cave systems Habitats, equipment and submarines Foundational Subnautica exploration and survival loop First-time players and the strongest baseline for the sequel
Raft Open ocean, floating raft and islands Modular raft expansion Travel between islands, collect drifting materials and dive for supplies Cooperative ocean survival
No Man’s Sky A galaxy of planets and environments, including oceans Planetary and underwater bases Open-ended discovery across a very large sandbox, with optional story objectives Players who want scale, freedom and construction
The Planet Crafter Hostile land-based planet Crafting stations and terraforming infrastructure Resource gathering and gradual environmental transformation Calm crafting and terraforming without underwater danger

These games should not be treated as interchangeable. Below Zero and Subnautica are ocean-first experiences. Raft uses the ocean as a route and resource source but centers the player on a floating platform. No Man’s Sky includes underwater regions inside a much broader space-exploration game. The Planet Crafter is an adjacent land-based substitute rather than an underwater game.

1. Subnautica: Below Zero is the closest direct match

Pick Below Zero if you want the nearest available version of Subnautica 2’s identity. It returns to Planet 4546B for a freezing underwater adventure and keeps the series’ first-person structure: leave a safe point, manage survival needs, collect materials, craft better tools, build habitats and dive into more demanding environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matches Subnautica 2

Below Zero preserves the combination that makes the series distinctive. The ocean is not a backdrop around a conventional action game; it is the place where navigation, risk, resource gathering and discovery all happen. Its icy biomes extend above and below the surface, so the game can change the hazards and sightlines without abandoning the underwater focus. Habitat construction gives collected materials a lasting purpose, while crafted tools open routes that were previously impractical or unsafe.

The connection to the earlier game also makes Below Zero the strongest choice for readers who care about continuity. It is set on the same planet as the original, whereas Subnautica 2 moves to an entirely new alien world. That difference means Below Zero offers familiar lore and a known setting, while the sequel’s appeal includes seeing how the series’ systems and mysteries work in a new place.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when underwater time is more important than surface travel.
  • Choose it when you want a focused campaign instead of a galaxy-scale sandbox.
  • Choose it when habitat construction, crafted equipment and progressively deeper exploration should all reinforce one another.
  • Choose it when the previous game’s setting and lore are a benefit rather than a distraction.

What it does not provide

Below Zero is not a substitute for Subnautica 2’s new-world setting. It also should not be presented as proof that every sequel feature will work identically; Subnautica 2 is an Early Access project with its own world and development path. The recommendation is about the shared structure and atmosphere, not a promise of feature-for-feature equivalence.

2. Subnautica is the foundational experience

Play the original Subnautica if you have not experienced the series. It is the clearest way to understand the design that Subnautica 2 builds on: an alien underwater adventure where survival preparation, equipment crafting, vehicle use, habitat construction and environmental curiosity are inseparable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes the original essential

The original places the player in an alien ocean containing coral reefs, volcanoes and deep cave systems. Progress depends on crafting equipment, piloting submarines and deciding how far to venture before returning with resources and information. Each new area can change the practical problem: visibility, depth, access, available materials and the level of preparation required.

That arrangement gives the original a particularly strong sense of escalation. You are not merely unlocking a bigger map; you are learning how to operate in environments that initially appear unreachable. A habitat becomes a staging point, equipment turns danger into a manageable risk, and a submarine changes the distance you can cover. The resulting loop is a direct reference point for anyone asking what “Subnautica-style exploration” actually means.

Original Subnautica versus Below Zero

The original is the better starting point for the series’ baseline, while Below Zero is the closer sequel-like recommendation because it continues the same planet and adapts the formula to a colder setting. New players should generally begin with Subnautica, then move to Below Zero if they want more of the same design language. Players who have already finished both can use the later choices to decide whether they want cooperation, scale or a calmer pace.

3. Raft is the best choice for co-op ocean survival

Choose Raft when the social survival fantasy matters more than living on an alien seabed. Its central image is a floating raft that players expand while collecting resources drifting across the open water. Islands provide destinations, and underwater dives can yield valuable supplies.

Where Raft overlaps

Raft shares the ocean-survival fundamentals that attract many Subnautica players: limited resources, exposure to a large body of water, repeated trips for materials and the satisfaction of turning a precarious starting point into a functioning base. Building is visible and continuous because the raft itself grows as the group adds new sections and useful facilities. That makes every resource run contribute to a shared physical home.

The travel loop also creates a natural cooperative rhythm. One player can work on the raft while others collect drifting materials, investigate an island or dive for supplies. The ocean remains central to movement and planning, even though the player’s permanent structure floats on its surface rather than resting on the seafloor.

Where it differs

Raft is surface-centered. Its islands and floating platform define the route through the world, and underwater areas are important excursions rather than the entire setting. It therefore cannot replace Subnautica’s feeling of descending through connected alien biomes, nor does it offer the same concentrated underwater mystery. The comparison is strongest for cooperative resource gathering and construction, not for ocean-floor exploration.

When Raft is the right recommendation

  • You want an ocean game built around a shared floating base.
  • You prefer a travel-and-collect routine that naturally supports a group.
  • You enjoy adding visible modules to a structure over time.
  • You are comfortable with islands and surface travel being as important as diving.

Current multiplayer support, platform availability and edition details can change, so verify those specifics for the version you plan to play. The available comparison establishes Raft’s cooperative ocean-survival design, not a permanent list of every supported platform or mode.

4. No Man’s Sky is best for broad exploration and bases

Choose No Man’s Sky when you want the freedom of a huge exploration sandbox and are willing to trade Subnautica’s concentrated underwater focus for variety. It spans an entire galaxy, supports optional story objectives, includes multiplayer and allows players to build bases, including underwater bases.

Why it appeals to Subnautica players

The shared appeal is agency. You can travel, gather, construct and decide which discovery deserves your attention. Underwater base building preserves one recognizable part of the Subnautica fantasy, while the larger game gives you many other environments to investigate when you want a change from the ocean. The result suits players who treat base design and discovery as long-term sandbox activities rather than steps in a tightly directed mystery.

Its scale also changes the emotional texture of exploration. Subnautica makes one alien ocean feel intimate and increasingly legible; No Man’s Sky makes the unknown feel effectively expansive because the player can move among worlds and environments. Optional story objectives provide direction for players who want it, but the structure remains less concentrated than a single-ocean survival campaign.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The trade-off in focus

No Man’s Sky is not a pure underwater survival game. Oceans are one part of a much larger galaxy, and underwater bases exist alongside planetary construction in other environments. If your main question is “Which game gives me the most time descending into alien water?”, choose Subnautica or Below Zero. If your question is “Which game lets me explore widely and keep building wherever I go?”, No Man’s Sky is the stronger fit.

5. The Planet Crafter is the calm, non-underwater alternative

Choose The Planet Crafter when the satisfying part of Subnautica is gathering, crafting and improving a hostile world, but underwater danger is not essential. It is land-based and should be described honestly as an adjacent recommendation, not as another ocean exploration game.

What carries over

The useful overlap is the progression loop. You collect resources, construct the tools and infrastructure needed to work more efficiently, and gradually change the conditions of the world around you. The appeal is less about reacting to a frightening underwater environment and more about watching a difficult planet become increasingly habitable through your own planning.

That makes it a good choice for players who enjoy the quieter side of survival crafting: organizing materials, deciding what to build next and seeing a long-term environmental transformation. It can satisfy the same desire for purposeful construction and steady improvement that a well-developed Subnautica habitat provides, even though the setting and hazards are different.

Why it is not a direct substitute

There is no underwater biome structure to learn, no ocean-floor navigation loop and no reason to expect the same first-person diving tension. The recommendation is about pace and crafting motivation. If you specifically want oxygen-limited exploration, alien reefs or underwater habitats, select one of the other four games instead.

How the alternatives compare on the questions players actually ask

Which game is most like Subnautica 2?

Below Zero is the closest overall match. It keeps the first-person alien-ocean setting, survival preparation, habitat construction, crafting and deeper-diving progression. The original Subnautica is the best foundational choice, especially for someone who has not played either earlier game.

What should you play after Subnautica?

Play Below Zero if you want another focused underwater adventure connected to the same fictional setting. Choose Raft if you want to move the experience into cooperative floating-base survival. Choose No Man’s Sky if you want to leave the single-ocean structure behind and explore a much larger galaxy while retaining base building. Choose The Planet Crafter if you want a slower crafting-and-transformation loop on land.

What is the best underwater survival game?

For a direct underwater survival experience, the original Subnautica remains the reference point, while Below Zero is the closest alternative to Subnautica 2. The answer changes only if “best” means something narrower: Raft is better for a floating co-op base, No Man’s Sky is better for broad exploration that includes water, and The Planet Crafter is not underwater at all.

Is there a co-op game like Subnautica?

Subnautica 2 officially supports solo play and up to four players. Raft is the clearest recommendation for cooperative ocean survival and construction. No Man’s Sky also supports multiplayer and underwater bases, but its main structure is a broad galaxy sandbox rather than a concentrated underwater campaign. Confirm the current multiplayer mode and platform support for the specific version you intend to buy, because those details can vary over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which game has Subnautica-style exploration and base building?

Below Zero has the closest combination of underwater exploration and habitats. The original Subnautica offers the defining version of that loop, including submarines and deep cave systems. No Man’s Sky provides base building, including underwater bases, but places it inside a much wider planetary and galactic structure. Raft uses a modular floating base, and The Planet Crafter uses land-based infrastructure tied to terraforming.

A practical decision guide

  1. Start with your required setting. If the game must be underwater almost all the time, choose Subnautica or Below Zero. If ocean travel is enough, consider Raft. If water can be one environment among many, consider No Man’s Sky. If land is acceptable, consider The Planet Crafter.
  2. Decide whether continuity matters. The original and Below Zero are part of the Subnautica setting; Subnautica 2 moves to a new alien world. No Man’s Sky, Raft and The Planet Crafter offer separate worlds and different narrative structures.
  3. Choose the building fantasy. Underwater habitats point to the Subnautica games. A growing floating platform points to Raft. Planetary or underwater bases across many worlds point to No Man’s Sky. Terraforming infrastructure points to The Planet Crafter.
  4. Choose the desired scale. Subnautica’s design concentrates attention on one ocean and its mysteries. No Man’s Sky deliberately expands the scope to a galaxy. Raft organizes progress around travel between islands, while The Planet Crafter focuses on gradually transforming one hostile planet.
  5. Choose the social format. Subnautica 2’s official limit is four players. Raft is the purpose-built recommendation for cooperative ocean survival. No Man’s Sky offers multiplayer inside its broader sandbox. Check the current listing for each alternative before assuming a particular co-op arrangement.

Buying and platform checks before you choose

Game availability, editions, physical releases, regional pricing and multiplayer requirements can change independently of a game’s design. Check the current store listing for your platform before purchasing, particularly for Early Access titles and games with multiple editions. Subnautica 2’s Early Access label means its content and technical behavior may continue to evolve.

For the alternatives, verify three practical details: the platform version you need, whether the current edition includes the features you want, and how multiplayer works on that platform. Those checks are especially important if your decision depends on playing with friends. The design comparisons above identify the strongest fit; they do not replace a current platform listing.

Bottom line: choose by the part of Subnautica 2 you want to preserve

Below Zero is the safest recommendation for anyone searching for “a game like Subnautica 2.” It preserves the underwater survival, crafting, habitat construction and mystery-driven exploration that define the series. The original Subnautica is the essential starting point and the clearest reference for the formula.

Move to Raft when cooperation and a floating base matter most. Move to No Man’s Sky when you want the biggest possible exploration canvas and underwater construction as one option among many. Choose The Planet Crafter only when you are happy to exchange diving for calm, land-based crafting and terraforming. That distinction keeps the recommendations useful instead of treating every survival-crafting game as an underwater substitute.
