Steelrising itself is a Spiders/Nacon action RPG set in an alternate 1789 French Revolution. You play Aegis, an engineered automaton bodyguard fighting the king’s army. It launched on 8 September 2022, and its Assistance mode lets players adjust the experience to make this Soulslike structure more approachable. The best replacement depends on which of those ingredients mattered most to you.

What makes Steelrising distinctive?
Steelrising combines several ideas that are rarely found together: a recognizable historical setting, an alternate-history premise, a mechanical protagonist and Soulslike combat. Aegis is not a human revolutionary but an engineered bodyguard whose mission is tied directly to the French Revolution. Paris and its political crisis provide the backdrop, while the king’s army supplies the immediate opposition.

That mixture creates four different reasons someone might search for “games like Steelrising.” You may want another game with a European city and period atmosphere; a demanding action RPG with deliberate melee timing; a story built around mechanical or puppet figures; or a larger role-playing game with factions, companions and dialogue. No single recommendation matches every axis equally well, so the guide below separates them.

Quick comparison
| Game | Setting and historical resemblance | Soulslike combat intensity | RPG and build depth | Exploration structure | Accessibility or difficulty flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lies of P | Fictional Belle Époque-inspired city; strong European and mechanical mood, but not Revolutionary France | High; committed melee and boss-focused progression | Strong story-led character and weapon progression | Mostly directed urban routes with secrets and shortcuts | Designed around a fixed Soulslike challenge; flexibility differs from Steelrising’s Assistance mode |
| GreedFall | Original fantasy setting; no direct French Revolution match | Lower; action RPG combat rather than a close Soulslike equivalent | Very strong quest, faction and companion role-playing | Larger conventional RPG zones and mission hubs | More conventional RPG structure and difficulty options |
| Nioh 2 | Japanese supernatural setting; historically and geographically unrelated | Very high; timing, Ki management, weapon skills and rapid clashes | Extensive build experimentation and weapon specialization | Mission-based areas with replayable stages and optional routes | Complex systems can be demanding even when the challenge is adjustable |
| Assassin’s Creed Unity | Detailed revolutionary Paris and historical figures | Low as a Soulslike comparison; stealth-action combat instead | Broader action-adventure progression rather than Soulslike builds | Open-world Paris with traversal, activities and investigation | Generally more approachable than a Soulslike |
| The Surge 2 | Bleak industrial science fiction; no French historical connection | High; targeted limbs and equipment-focused encounters | Good gear and implant experimentation | Interconnected industrial environments with shortcuts | Built for demanding play, with fewer ways to soften the core challenge |
1. Lies of P: the closest overall mood
Lies of P is the strongest first recommendation when what you loved was Steelrising’s combination of European atmosphere, artificial beings and a focused Soulslike campaign. GamesRadar describes it as a story-driven adventure inspired by the Belle Époque, set in the devastated city of Krat, with the player controlling a puppet. That gives it the nearest thematic bridge to Aegis: the protagonist is an artificial person navigating a human catastrophe.
Why it fits
- Mechanical and puppet imagery: Its puppet premise echoes Steelrising’s automaton protagonist without copying the French Revolution.
- European city under collapse: Krat supplies the dense, melancholic urban mood that makes Steelrising’s Paris memorable.
- Story-led Soulslike structure: The campaign keeps narrative discovery and melee progression closely connected.
- Committed combat: Attacks, defenses and boss encounters demand the same kind of attention that attracts players to Steelrising.
Where it differs
Krat is fictional and Belle Époque-inspired rather than an alternate 1789 Paris. The historical and political texture is therefore atmospheric rather than documentary. If your favorite Steelrising moments involved recognizable revolutionary locations or historical personalities, Lies of P will not replace that element. It is also better understood as the closest mood and premise match, not as a literal sequel or shared-world experience.

Choose Lies of P if…
You want one game to preserve the largest number of Steelrising’s defining sensations: a European city in crisis, an artificial protagonist, a strong narrative frame and demanding melee combat.
2. GreedFall: the best same-developer RPG follow-up
GreedFall is the most relevant choice when your attachment to Steelrising comes from Spiders’ writing and role-playing structure rather than from exact combat feel. Focus Entertainment lists GreedFall as an adventure/action RPG released on 10 September 2019. The Steelrising development interview explicitly says Spiders looked to GreedFall while defining the newer game, making this a meaningful developer connection rather than a superficial genre comparison.
What carries over
- Quest writing: GreedFall gives more space to political choices, competing interests and consequences across a longer RPG structure.
- Faction politics: If you enjoyed Steelrising as a game about upheaval and power, GreedFall’s faction relationships are the reason to play it.
- Companion interaction: Party members and their personal stories make the adventure feel like a conventional role-playing campaign rather than a boss route.
- Spiders’ design priorities: The shared developer makes GreedFall the clearest way to explore the studio’s broader RPG identity.
What does not carry over
GreedFall is not a mechanical or combat clone. Its action RPG battles are less Soulslike, and its structure is larger and more conventional. Expect more dialogue, exploration and quest management, and less emphasis on precise boss patterns and repeated attempts. Treat it as a developer-and-RPG match, not a replacement for Steelrising’s moment-to-moment combat.

Choose GreedFall if…
You want another Spiders game with faction politics, companions and a substantial quest-driven campaign, and you are willing to trade Soulslike intensity for broader role-playing systems.
3. Nioh 2: the best combat-first alternative
Nioh 2 is the pick for players who mainly remember Steelrising for demanding timing, weapon variety and the satisfaction of refining a build. GamesRadar highlights its Ki system, weapon skill trees and rapid clashes. Those systems make it a much deeper combat laboratory than a setting match.
Why its combat earns the recommendation
- Ki management: Your actions and recovery are governed by a resource that makes attack timing and stamina control central to every exchange.
- Weapon skill trees: Different weapon families support distinct techniques, encouraging experimentation instead of a single universal moveset.
- Fast engagements: Fights resolve quickly when you understand spacing, counters and openings, but punish unfocused button presses.
- Build experimentation: Equipment and skills let you create a character around a preferred weapon and combat rhythm.
The setting trade-off
Nioh 2’s Japanese supernatural world has no direct relationship to Revolutionary France, Aegis or European automatons. Its value here is systems-based: it delivers a demanding action RPG with more combat complexity, not the same historical or visual fantasy. Presenting it as a French Revolution substitute would set the wrong expectation.
Choose Nioh 2 if…
You would keep Steelrising’s combat and discard its setting, story premise and historical context in exchange for faster fights and more elaborate build decisions.
4. Assassin’s Creed Unity: the best historical Paris companion
Assassin’s Creed Unity is the best choice when the part you most want to revisit is a detailed Paris during the French Revolution. It is an open-world stealth-action game, not a Soulslike, so its strengths are place, period, traversal and historical encounters rather than boss design.
What it matches
- Revolutionary Paris: The city itself is the main attraction for anyone who enjoyed Steelrising’s alternate-history streets and political atmosphere.
- Historical figures and events: Unity is built around recognizable revolutionary history rather than a wholly invented crisis.
- Urban traversal: Movement across rooftops and through dense streets gives Paris a scale and continuity that a more directed action RPG cannot provide.
- Open-world discovery: Side activities and investigations let you spend time in the setting beyond the main plot.
What it cannot replace
Unity does not reproduce Steelrising’s Soulslike loop, automaton protagonist or boss-focused melee. Its stealth-action design asks different questions: how to approach a target, move through a district and manage an encounter in a broader sandbox. Check the current platform and storefront listing for your region before buying, since availability can change.

- Hire the perfect employees to deal with a variety of life events
- Control everything that happens in your park, from what your animals eat to what eats your animals…
- Decide whether you want to run your Zoo above board... or break the law and pocket the extra cash
Choose Unity if…
Your priority is walking through a richly realized revolutionary Paris and encountering its history, even if that means giving up Soulslike combat and Steelrising’s mechanical fantasy.
5. The Surge 2: the best industrial science-fiction alternative
The Surge 2 is a strong fit for players who remember Steelrising’s machinery, harsh industrial mood and interest in fighting artificial or heavily equipped enemies. Its setting is bleak science fiction rather than eighteenth-century France, but its systems provide a clear mechanical parallel: targeted body-part combat and equipment-driven progression.
Why it belongs on the list
- Industrial atmosphere: Factories, machinery and engineered threats replace Steelrising’s clockwork Paris while preserving a hard-edged technological tone.
- Targeted limbs: Choosing which body part to attack adds a tactical layer to encounters and affects the equipment you can obtain.
- Soulslike pressure: Positioning, resource management and learning enemy patterns remain central.
- Gear decisions: Equipment choices matter during both ordinary encounters and major fights.
The major mismatch
There is no French Revolution, historical Paris or alternate-history political drama. The Surge 2 is a systems-and-atmosphere alternative only. Choose it because you want industrial combat mechanics and science-fiction bleakness, not because you expect a period setting.

Use the question that best describes what you would miss most after leaving Steelrising. This avoids treating every recommendation as an all-purpose equivalent.
- Want the closest overall mood and protagonist concept? Start with Lies of P.
- Want Spiders’ writing, factions and companions? Choose GreedFall.
- Want the most demanding combat and build experimentation? Choose Nioh 2.
- Want revolutionary Paris and historical exploration? Choose Assassin’s Creed Unity.
- Want industrial machines and targeted combat? Choose The Surge 2.
Accessibility and difficulty: what to expect
Steelrising is unusual among Soulslike action RPGs because it includes an Assistance mode intended to make the genre more approachable. That matters if you liked its world and story but found repeated combat attempts exhausting. Assistance mode is part of Steelrising’s identity, not a reason to assume every alternative offers equivalent flexibility.

- Assetto Corsa Competizione allows you to feel the real atmosphere of the GT3 championship
- Compete against official drivers, teams, cars circuits reproduced in game with the highest level of accuracy ever achieved on console
- Sprint, Endurance, and Spa 24 Hours races come to life with an incredible level of realism, in both single and multiplayer modes
Lies of P and The Surge 2 are best approached as demanding combat games. Nioh 2 adds enough systems that learning the rules can be as challenging as surviving individual encounters. GreedFall’s conventional RPG structure is the safer option if you want more time for dialogue and quests than for precision combat. Unity is the most approachable choice when exploration and historical atmosphere matter more than a Soulslike challenge.

Common mistakes when replacing Steelrising
Choosing only by setting
A Paris match does not guarantee a combat match. Unity preserves the period and city but changes the entire action model. Conversely, Nioh 2 may satisfy a combat specialist while offering none of the historical flavor.
Assuming every action RPG is a Soulslike
GreedFall is an action RPG with a larger quest-and-companion structure, not a direct substitute for Steelrising’s boss-focused rhythm. Check whether you want build depth, exploration, story or combat before comparing labels.
Expecting a literal automaton equivalent
Lies of P is the nearest thematic parallel because its protagonist is a puppet, but its fictional Belle Époque-inspired city is not Revolutionary Paris. The resemblance is strongest in mood and premise, not chronology.
Ignoring the accessibility gap
If Assistance mode was central to your enjoyment of Steelrising, confirm the difficulty and accessibility options in the game you choose. A title can be similar in atmosphere while offering fewer ways to adjust the challenge.
