Neither is an exact substitute: Aksun uses real-time action and is still in development, and Hellslave replaces Korean folklore with dark fantasy.

What makes Seolhwa Dungeon distinctive?
Seolhwa Dungeon is a turn-based roguelike RPG built around Korean folklore. Its official mobile descriptions treat old tales as rules for surviving the dungeon, not merely as names attached to enemies. A silver mine contains dokkaebi fire, a royal tomb has open coffins, a foggy marsh hides its own dangers, a fox den invokes gumiho lore, and the underworld is guarded by King Yeomra.
Every run redraws the dungeon. A fatal mistake does not reload the previous room; death sends the character back to the beginning, so each attempt is a fresh route through changing hazards. The App Store listing summarizes that pressure as: “One turn decides everything. There is no undo, and death sends you back to the first floor.”

The official Google Play listing gives the game four main dungeons, seven side dungeons, 14 species, 12 classes, 32 cards, and 134 yokai. Pocket Gamer’s launch coverage describes roughly 150 yokai, so the two figures should be read as different descriptions of the launch content rather than a single independently audited count. The game also supports portrait, one-handed play, offline sessions, auto-explore, and auto-fight. An October 4, 2026 listing update added telegraphed enemy attacks and other early-run changes; update behavior can vary by storefront and region.
That combination creates a specific target for recommendations. A game can resemble Seolhwa Dungeon mechanically but miss the folklore, or share the atmosphere while abandoning its strict turn structure. The best choice depends on which ingredient you want to preserve.
Quick comparison: Seolhwa Dungeon, Aksun and Hellslave
| Game | Mythology and setting | Combat | Run structure | Platform and status | Best fit |

| Aksun | Korean-shamanic afterlife, demons and the River of Three Paths | Real-time action with strategic abilities | Procedural roguelike runs, according to the developer description | Steam for Windows and Mac; in development | Players who prioritize Korean afterlife atmosphere over turn-by-turn combat |
| Hellslave | Milton-inspired dark fantasy and demonology | Turn-based tactical combat | Roguelite dungeon crawling with New Game+ replayability | Steam; released May 26, 2022 | Players who want tactical desktop combat, build customization and a darker non-Korean setting |
1. Aksun: the closest Korean-mythology alternative
Wayway Studio describes Aksun as an “Occult Action Roguelike” set in a Korean-shamanic afterlife. Its world is presented as a mystic underworld shaped by Korean shamanic folklore, with a journey across the River of Three Paths. The pitch combines procedural dungeon runs, real-time combat, strategic abilities and encounters with demons.
Why Aksun is the strongest thematic match
Aksun is the only game in this comparison that explicitly combines Korean spiritual tradition with a roguelike structure. If your favorite part of Seolhwa Dungeon is entering a world of spirits, death messengers and underworld imagery, Aksun preserves that cultural direction more closely than a generic dungeon crawler can.
The overlap is thematic rather than mechanical. Seolhwa Dungeon asks you to evaluate one turn at a time, while Aksun is designed around real-time action. You should expect to make decisions during movement and combat instead of selecting a single safe response and waiting for the outcome. That change may appeal to players who want more immediate control, but it will not reproduce Seolhwa Dungeon’s deliberate, no-undo tension.
What is known about availability
Aksun is listed for Steam on Windows and Mac and is marked In Development. Wayway Studio has not established a public release date or price in the cited description, so it is not a game you can treat as an available replacement today. Development status, launch plans and storefront information can change.

Choose Aksun if…
- Korean shamanic folklore and an underworld journey matter more than exact turn-based rules.
- You prefer real-time action with strategic abilities.
- You play on a Windows or Mac computer and are comfortable waiting for an in-development title.
- You want a roguelike whose setting is culturally connected to Korean spiritual tradition rather than a reskinned medieval dungeon.
Skip Aksun if…
- You need a released game you can buy and play immediately.
- Your priority is Seolhwa Dungeon’s one-turn-at-a-time decision model.
- You specifically want portrait orientation, offline mobile play, auto-explore or auto-fight.
2. Hellslave: the best tactical dark-fantasy substitute
Hellslave is a dark-fantasy dungeon crawler described on Steam with roguelite, tactical, RPG and turn-based elements. You make a pact with the Devil, customize a character with demonic abilities and fight a demon invasion. Its New Game+ mode provides replayability after an initial completion.
Where Hellslave matches Seolhwa Dungeon
The strongest overlap is structural. Both games use turn-based decision-making, dangerous dungeon exploration and repeatable runs. Hellslave is therefore the better recommendation when the reason you enjoy Seolhwa Dungeon is planning, positioning and building a character through hostile rooms rather than the specific Korean folklore.
Its build focus also gives it a different kind of replay value. Seolhwa Dungeon’s listing emphasizes species, classes, cards and a large bestiary. Hellslave instead centers its identity on demonic abilities and the consequences of a pact with the Devil. The result is a character-customization experience rooted in dark fantasy rather than a folklore taxonomy.
What Hellslave does not preserve
Hellslave is not a Korean mythology game. Its setting draws on dark fantasy and demonology associated with Milton-inspired imagery, so it does not provide gumiho, dokkaebi, Imugi, Jeoseung Saja or the taboos that make Seolhwa Dungeon’s encounters culturally specific.
It is also a desktop title on Steam rather than a portrait mobile game. If you rely on one-handed sessions, offline access or automated exploration, those Seolhwa Dungeon conveniences should not be assumed here. The available description establishes the tactical and replayable structure, not feature parity with the mobile listing.

- You want a released game rather than an announced project.
- Turn-based tactical combat is more important to you than Korean folklore.
- You enjoy experimenting with demonic abilities and character builds.
- You want a dark-fantasy dungeon crawler on Steam with New Game+ replayability.
Skip Hellslave if…
- Your main search is specifically for Korean mythology or Korean underworld stories.
- You want real-time action instead of turn-based play, in which case Aksun is the closer mechanical direction.
- You need a phone-first portrait experience.
How the folklore works in Seolhwa Dungeon
The game’s mythology is not just a visual theme. The official descriptions say that encounters can have safe or dangerous responses based on the underlying tale. That design makes knowledge of the creature or taboo part of play: the correct action is determined by what the story says about the being, not only by its hit points.

Gumiho
Gumiho is the fox spirit named in the game’s listings. In Seolhwa Dungeon, the fox den is one of the environments used to turn Korean folklore into a dungeon situation. The important distinction for players is that the creature’s identity can inform how an encounter should be approached.
Dokkaebi
Dokkaebi is a goblin-like being associated with the silver mine’s fire. The listing’s dokkaebi-fire example shows how a location can communicate a folklore hazard before the player understands its combat consequences.
Imugi
Imugi is the serpent associated with dragon transformation in the game’s terminology. It appears alongside gumiho and Jeoseung Saja in the App Store description as part of the mythological vocabulary that shapes the world.
Recommended Free Tools
Jeoseung Saja
Jeoseung Saja is presented as a death messenger. Its inclusion reinforces the game’s movement between earthly folklore and the underworld guarded by King Yeomra.
Why this matters when choosing an alternative
Aksun is the only recommendation that keeps Korean spiritual subject matter at the center, although it uses an action format and remains unfinished. Hellslave can reproduce the pressure of tactical dungeon decisions, but not the cultural logic behind Seolhwa Dungeon’s encounters. Decide whether you are looking for mythology as a rule system or mythology as atmosphere before choosing.
Which game fits your preferred combat style?
Choose Seolhwa Dungeon for strict, consequence-heavy turns
Seolhwa Dungeon is the clearest option if you want every action to carry permanent run-level consequences. There is no undo, death returns you to the first floor, and the dungeon is redrawn for the next attempt. Telegraphed enemy attacks added in the October 4, 2026 update are intended to make threats more readable while preserving the need to commit to decisions.

Choose Aksun for real-time action
Aksun changes the rhythm from turn planning to action execution. Strategic abilities remain part of the pitch, but the developer describes combat as real-time. That makes it a better fit for players who want to react, move and attack continuously while exploring a Korean-shamanic afterlife.

| Question | Seolhwa Dungeon | Aksun | Hellslave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the environment change between attempts? | Yes. The dungeon is redrawn every run. | Procedural roguelike runs are part of the developer description. | Roguelite dungeon crawling is part of the Steam description. |
| What happens after death? | The run ends and the player returns to the start. | Specific death-persistence details are not stated in the cited description. | The cited description establishes roguelite replayability and New Game+, but not a matching death-reset rule. |
| What supports long-term replay? | Changing layouts, multiple dungeon types, classes, species, cards and a large yokai roster. | Procedural runs, strategic abilities and the Korean-shamanic setting. | Character customization, demonic abilities and New Game+. |
Do not assume that “roguelike” means the same persistence system in every title. Seolhwa Dungeon explicitly sends you back after death. Aksun’s cited description confirms procedural runs but does not specify what carries over. Hellslave’s New Game+ is a separate replay feature and should not be treated as proof that every failed run resets identically to Seolhwa Dungeon.
Platform, access and session style
Mobile and one-handed play
Seolhwa Dungeon’s official listing supports portrait orientation, one-handed play, offline access, auto-explore and auto-fight. Those features make it suitable for short mobile sessions and for players who do not want every room to require manual movement.
Desktop action
Aksun is listed for Steam on Windows and Mac. Because it is in development, the listed platforms describe the developer’s target rather than a guaranteed current release.

Best Value
A practical decision guide
- Start with mythology. If Korean folklore, gods, taboos and yokai are non-negotiable, stay with Seolhwa Dungeon or watch Aksun. Hellslave is a thematic change, not a mythology match.
- Choose your combat tempo. Pick Seolhwa Dungeon for no-undo turns, Aksun for real-time action, or Hellslave for established turn-based tactics.
- Check availability. Seolhwa Dungeon has Android and iOS listings. Hellslave is a released Steam game. Aksun remains in development with no stated price or release date.
- Decide how you want to build a character. Seolhwa Dungeon offers species, classes and cards; Aksun emphasizes strategic abilities; Hellslave focuses on demonic abilities and a Devil pact.
- Match the device and session pattern. Choose Seolhwa Dungeon for portrait, one-handed and offline mobile sessions. Choose either desktop title if a computer-based dungeon crawler suits you better.
Common expectations that lead to disappointment
“A Korean setting means the combat will be similar.”
It will not necessarily be. Aksun shares the cultural direction but uses real-time action. Hellslave shares more of the turn-based dungeon structure but has no Korean mythology.
“Every roguelike has the same death rules.”
Seolhwa Dungeon explicitly returns you to the first floor after death. The available Aksun description does not specify its persistence rules, and Hellslave’s New Game+ is not the same statement as a full run reset.
“The yokai count is a fixed independent measurement.”
The official Google Play listing states 134 yokai, while Pocket Gamer describes roughly 150 at launch. Treat these as differing product-description figures rather than a verified census.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Wayway Studio marks Aksun in development. A Steam listing and a playable release are not equivalent, and its price and release date remain to be determined in the cited information.
Bottom line: which game should you pick?
Pick Seolhwa Dungeon when you want Korean folklore to control the rules of a strict, turn-based mobile roguelike. Its changing dungeons, no-undo decisions, death reset and large roster of mythological creatures make it unusually specific.
Pick Aksun when Korean mythology and an underworld journey are your priority and you are willing to wait for an in-development real-time action roguelike. It is the closest thematic match, not a mechanical replacement.
Pick Hellslave when you want a released Steam game with turn-based tactical dungeon crawling, demonic character builds and New Game+ replayability. It is the strongest non-Korean alternative for the gameplay loop, but its dark-fantasy setting is a deliberate departure.
