The best games like RuneScape depend on what you want to keep doing for months or years. If you enjoy setting your own skill goals, long grinds, quests, and a world shaped by its community, start with Old School RuneScape. For a guided story, try Final Fantasy XIV Online; for a fantasy MMO with no recurring subscription fee, consider Guild Wars 2; and for crafting and a player-driven economy with real PvP risk, look at Albion Online. The Elder Scrolls Online is another option for players who want a broad fantasy world with continuing quests and systems.

“Long-term” can mean open-ended skill projects, a long narrative, collecting and mastery, or an economy built around other players. These games preserve different parts of RuneScape’s appeal rather than offering identical substitutes.

Which RuneScape-like online RPG should you try first?

If you want… Start with… Why it may fit What differs from RuneScape
Skills, long grinds, quests, and community influence Old School RuneScape It centers on an open world, social skilling, quests, competitive modes, co-op, and player voting on major changes. It is RuneScape’s retro branch, not a separate game world.
A large, story-led adventure Final Fantasy XIV Online Its North American free trial includes story content through level 80 with no playtime cap, and supported dungeons can be tackled with NPC allies. Progression is more directed; Square Enix says grinding is kept to a minimum.
Fantasy MMO play without a recurring subscription fee Guild Wars 2 ArenaNet offers a free core game and highlights professions, dynamic events, story, and competitive modes. Expansion access is separate, so check current content and purchase requirements.
Crafting, trading, guilds, and player-driven risk Albion Online It combines PvE, PvP, guild-versus-guild play, and a player economy, with a free-to-play entry point. Some zones use full-loot rules: death can cost you the gear you are carrying.
A broad fantasy world with ongoing quests and systems The Elder Scrolls Online Bethesda’s 2026 Season Zero announcement describes new reward systems, zones, challenges, PvP progression, and player-experience changes. The cited announcement does not establish the full current cost or access model.

What kind of long-term progression do you enjoy?

Before choosing, decide what you want your regular play sessions to revolve around. RuneScape’s appeal can come from several loops at once, but other MMORPGs tend to put more emphasis on one or two of them.

  • Self-set goals: You choose what to train, gather, craft, or complete, with no single story path dictating your next project.
  • Story chapters: You follow a structured narrative and unlock new areas and systems as your character advances.
  • Exploration and events: You travel through a world where activities and encounters provide recurring goals.
  • Crafting and trade: You build specializations, make goods, and take part in an economy shaped by other players.
  • Competitive advancement: You focus on PvP ranks, guild conflicts, or other competitive objectives.

Also consider how much risk and social pressure you want. A full-loot zone makes a different promise from a story-led quest or a cooperative event. If the loss of equipped gear would make a session frustrating, Albion’s danger zones may not be the kind of long-term loop you want.

#1 Best Overall
RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg
  • Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

Old School RuneScape: the closest fit for skills and self-directed goals

If you want the familiar mix of skills, quests, grinds, and community influence, Old School RuneScape is the most direct choice. Jagex describes it as a retro fantasy MMORPG launched in 2013 from a 2007 snapshot, with major changes subject to player voting. Its official page presents a world built around skilling, quests, competition, and co-op. Explore Old School RuneScape at Jagex.

This is the natural starting point when what you want is RuneScape’s style of progression rather than a different game’s version of a persistent RPG. The trade-off is straightforward: it remains part of the RuneScape franchise, not a new setting or a departure from the series.

Final Fantasy XIV: choose a long, guided story

Final Fantasy XIV is the best fit here if you want a substantial narrative to carry your progression. The official North American free-trial page advertises play through level 80 with no playtime limit, covering A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Endwalker-era trial content as presented on that page. Supported dungeons also allow solo progression with NPC allies. Trial terms can change, so check the page for current conditions before starting: Final Fantasy XIV North American Free Trial.

Steamforged Games, RuneScape Kingdoms The Board Game Bundle: King Black Dragon, Kalphite Queen, TzKal-Zuk, Culinaromancer, and RuneScape Expansion (5 Items)
  • Immerse yourself in a thrilling tabletop adventure filled with strategy, storytelling, and dynamic character interactions designed to challenge every decision.
  • Experience high replayability through immersive roleplay, unpredictable encounters, and evolving tactical choices that keep every session intense and fresh.
  • Master your destiny with customizable heroes, intricate quests, and deep world-building that fuel creative expression and competitive gameplay.
  • Perfect for RPG enthusiasts seeking complex mechanics, cooperative missions, and richly detailed scenarios that spark imagination and rivalry.
  • Premium components, atmospheric artwork, and narrative depth make this board game a must-have centerpiece for any tabletop gaming collection.

This is more guided than RuneScape’s self-set skill projects. Square Enix says grinding is kept to a minimum, so expect the story and character progression to shape your route rather than an open-ended collection of skills to train at your own pace.

Square Enix’s page says “Over 30 Million* Players Worldwide.” Its footnote defines this as total accounts across Japan, North America, Europe, Oceania, China, and South Korea, including Free Trial accounts; it is not an active-player count.

Guild Wars 2: play the core game without a subscription fee

Guild Wars 2 is worth considering if you want a fantasy MMO with a free-to-play core game and no recurring subscription fee. ArenaNet’s official site highlights professions, dynamic events, personal story, and competitive play, and states: “Get in the game and play. No subscription fee ever!” Expansion ownership is separate, so review the current game and expansion requirements before buying: Guild Wars 2 official site.

  • MULTI-AWARD WINNING: "Best Party Game" At UK games expo. "Seal of excellence" From dice tower games. A perfect board game for adults and teenagers

ArenaNet’s site also says “21 Million Players Strong.” The page does not define that figure as active players, so it should not be read as a current active-user count.

Albion Online: build around crafting, trade, and PvP risk

Albion Online suits players who want crafting, trading, guild life, and a world where player conflict can carry meaningful consequences. Its official material describes PvE, PvP, guild-versus-guild play, and full-loot danger zones. The official FAQ describes the game as free to download and play, but check its current terms before you begin: Albion Online official site.

The key trade-off is the danger zones: in areas with full-loot rules, dying can mean losing the gear you carry. That makes Albion’s risk-and-reward economy a poor fit if you want a relaxed skilling alternative or do not want PvP loss to affect your progress.
