If you want the closest follow-up to Persona 4 Golden, play Persona 3 Reload. For another modern Persona story, choose Persona 5 Royal. Outside the series, Trails of Cold Steel is the strongest fit for school routines and bonds; Fire Emblem: Three Houses adds school life to tactical combat; and Yakuza: Like a Dragon brings turn-based battles and party relationships to a contemporary city. These games share specific ingredients with Persona 4, but none reproduces its exact blend of a small-town murder mystery, supernatural conflict, and social simulation.

If you are waiting for the announced Persona 4 Revival, its release is still in the future: Atlus currently lists February 18, 2027 generally and May 20, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2. Those dates may change, so check the official listing for your region before making plans.

What makes a game feel like Persona 4?

In Persona 4 Golden, daily life and supernatural danger are intertwined. The official Atlus page describes Social Links that develop according to how you spend your days, alongside turn-based battles against Shadows. The appeal is not just “JRPG”: it is the combination of relationships, routine, mystery, and combat. Atlus’s Persona 4 Golden page is the reference point for that mix.

  • Setting and story: modern Japan, a school, a fantasy world, a mystery, or a broader political story.

Dragon Quest XI S Turn-based combat, a party, and a substantial story Traditional fantasy adventure rather than modern social simulation A classic JRPG journey

Closest matches within the Persona series

Persona 3 Reload: another character-driven supernatural story

Choose Persona 3 Reload if you want another ensemble cast and a supernatural threat, and you are comfortable with a darker tone than Persona 4’s rural coming-of-age mystery. Atlus presents Reload as preserving Persona 3’s story and characters while adding quality-of-life features and a graphical overhaul. It is a modernized version of Persona 3, not a new story. Atlus’s Persona 3 Reload page has the official framing.

Persona 5 Royal: school life in a different modern Japan

Persona 5 Royal shifts the setting to Tokyo, where a transferred student joins the Phantom Thieves as they work to change distorted desires. It is the natural choice if the modern school setting and supernatural drama matter more to you than returning to Inaba’s specific mystery. Atlus lists physical standard, digital standard, and collector’s editions, and includes Xbox, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch among the platforms on its page. Edition and regional availability can vary; check the current platform listing before buying. Atlus’s Persona 5 Royal page provides its edition and platform information.

Outside Persona: school calendars, bonds, and social routines

Trails of Cold Steel: class life and bonding events

Trails of Cold Steel is a strong outside-series option if the school year, classmates, and scheduled activities are what you miss most. It follows a military school class and uses a calendar structure, bonding opportunities, and field-trip quests. Its combat has a different rhythm, and the story sits within a broader epic rather than Persona 4’s self-contained small-town mystery. Treat it as an adjacent fit, not a one-to-one substitute; also check the series’ entry order before starting a later installment. GamesRadar’s recommendations discuss the school and bonding elements.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses: school life with tactical battles

Pick Fire Emblem: Three Houses if you want to teach and spend time with students, choose a school house, and plan activities around a calendar. The major trade-off is combat: battles are tactical, not the party-based turn-based encounters associated with Persona. That distinction matters because “JRPG” covers different subgenres, including tactical and action games. GamesRadar’s comparison covers the school and calendar structure; PlayStation’s JRPG guide explains why the genre label alone does not predict how a game plays.

Outside Persona: turn-based battles and party chemistry

Yakuza: Like a Dragon: modern city and party bonds

Yakuza: Like a Dragon suits players who want a contemporary Japanese setting, turn-based battles, memorable party members, and events that build bonds. Its job system and “Drink Links” provide relationship-focused diversions, but its crime-comedy story has no school calendar or supernatural murder mystery. It shares the city-and-party side of Persona more than the daily school-life structure. GamesRadar’s recommendations describe these features.

Dragon Quest XI S: a traditional fantasy JRPG

Choose Dragon Quest XI S when what you mainly want is turn-based combat, a party, and a long-form adventure—not Persona’s social simulation. It is a traditional fantasy journey built around sword-and-spell battles and a varied world to explore. The setting and structure are a clear departure from modern Japan and the relationship-driven calendar. PlayStation’s JRPG guide describes the game and its traditional turn-based approach.

Do you need to play another Persona game first?

No. Nintendo describes Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal as standalone stories, so you do not need to finish other entries to start one. Its overview also introduces all three games. Nintendo’s Persona overview gives that series context.

What is known about Persona 4 Revival?

As of October 4, 2026, Atlus lists Persona 4 Revival for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. The page gives February 18, 2027 as the general release date and May 20, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2. It lists packaged editions only for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Because these are future release plans, dates, editions, and platforms may change. Check Atlus’s Persona 4 Revival page for its latest official listing.

Xbox describes Persona 4 Revival as a full remake with modernized visuals, interface, battle system, and events, and summarizes the original game’s rural Inaba murder mystery. That makes Revival distinct from simply replaying Persona 4 Golden: it is presented as a remake, while Golden remains the existing release. Xbox’s Persona hub provides that description.
