Last Epoch is the closest overall match for Path of Exile 2 fans who care most about experimenting with builds, improving loot and controlling their crafting. Choose Diablo IV instead if a polished open world, shared activities, cross-play and cross-progression matter more. Grim Dawn is the better fit for a self-contained campaign with complex character development and solo, LAN or online co-op. Titan Quest II is worth watching for its Greek-mythology setting, but its Early Access scope should be checked before purchase.

These games overlap with Path of Exile 2 without being interchangeable. Their biggest differences are how much control you have over skills and items, whether progression is campaign-first or seasonal, and whether multiplayer means a shared world, a private party or a traditional LAN session.

Grim Dawn Solo players and groups who prefer a complete, traditional campaign Complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting, choice-and-consequence quests, single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op Its older presentation and campaign structure are unlike a modern seasonal service

What Path of Exile 2 fans are actually looking for

Path of Exile 2’s official Steam description reduces its appeal to two linked ideas: making powerful characters and finding epic loot. That is a more useful comparison point than graphics or camera angle. A game can look like an isometric action RPG yet feel completely different if its skills, itemization or endgame do not reward long-term planning.

Path of Exile 2 is in Early Access. Its Steam listing says it is planned to become free-to-play after Early Access, while the Epic Games Store product page describes twelve character classes and co-op for up to six players. Early Access content, release timing and feature availability can change, so treat those details as a snapshot rather than a permanent specification.

For a replacement or companion game, assess six questions:

  • Build depth: Do skills have meaningful branches, or are upgrades mostly numerical?
  • Loot control: Can you target useful item properties, or is every improvement almost entirely random?
  • Progression shape: Does the game end with a repeatable endgame, a seasonal service, or a finite campaign?
  • Group play: Are solo, LAN, online-party, shared-world and cross-platform options clearly supported?
  • Ownership model: Is the current release finished, in Early Access, or continually changing through seasons and expansions?
  • Atmosphere: Do you want dark fantasy, a broad shared world, an older self-contained campaign or Greek mythology?

The recommendations below are organized around those decisions rather than a single ranking.

Last Epoch: the closest systems match

Why its build system suits PoE 2 players

Last Epoch is the strongest choice when the fun is in testing a concept, revising it and watching the character become more capable. Eleventh Hour Games lists more than 130 skills, and each skill has its own augment tree. That structure gives experimentation a visible home: you are not only choosing a class, but also deciding how individual abilities behave and what role they play in a build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important distinction is readability. A large number of skills can be intimidating, but per-skill trees expose the available decisions close to the ability itself. A player can change the behavior of a favored attack or spell without needing to decode an unrelated global system first. This makes Last Epoch a practical bridge for someone who enjoys Path of Exile 2’s planning but wants the consequences of a choice to be easier to inspect.

Randomized drops with deliberate crafting

The official feature list combines randomized loot with deterministic crafting. Those systems solve different problems. Random drops provide the excitement of finding something unexpected; deterministic crafting gives you a way to improve an item toward a known goal instead of waiting forever for a perfect roll.

That combination is the core reason to pick Last Epoch over a game that relies only on drops. You can still chase exciting upgrades, but crafting supplies a second route for turning a promising item into a useful one. The process is not the same as Path of Exile 2’s item economy, and you should not assume recipes, materials or limits transfer between games. The transferable habit is to evaluate whether a drop has a workable foundation before discarding it.

Endgame structure

Last Epoch lists three repeatable activities with different purposes: the Monolith of Fate, Arena and Dungeons. The Monolith of Fate gives the game a progression-focused endgame path; Arena emphasizes combat endurance; Dungeons provide another form of challenge and reward. Having several named activities matters because it lets you change the kind of task you are doing without abandoning the character you built.

This is a better fit for players who want an endgame to extend a build rather than a campaign that ends at the credits. It also means you should decide whether you enjoy escalating, repeatable content before committing. If you prefer a single authored adventure and then stopping, Grim Dawn is likely a better match.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Last Epoch if your first question is, How many different ways can I make this skill work?
  • Choose it if you want both surprise drops and a controlled way to improve equipment.
  • Choose it if a named endgame loop is more important than a shared open world.
  • Do not choose it solely because of a current patch, season or storefront listing; those details are subject to change.

The cited feature information does not establish a complete, permanent list of multiplayer modes or platform support. Check the current store and official game information if party play is a deciding requirement.

Diablo IV: the shared-world alternative

What makes its moment-to-moment play different

Diablo IV is the recommendation for players who want a polished world around their dungeon runs. Blizzard describes skill trees, legendary loot, nightmarish dungeons, an expansive open world and shared-world play. The design emphasis is not only on assembling a character; it is also on moving through connected regions where other players and activities are part of the setting.

That makes Diablo IV feel less like a private laboratory and more like a persistent action-RPG service. You can leave a dungeon, travel through an open region and encounter activities that are not confined to a menu. If the appeal of Path of Exile 2 is primarily dark combat, item upgrades and playing with friends in a living environment, this is the most direct alternative among the games listed here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-play and cross-progression

Cross-play and cross-progression are explicit parts of Diablo IV’s listed feature set. Cross-play lets players on supported platforms participate together, while cross-progression is intended to carry character progress between supported platforms under the game’s account rules. Confirm the current platform requirements before buying, because support policies can change.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

These features matter more than they may appear. A group can choose the platform it already owns instead of coordinating hardware, and a player can move between systems without treating each one as a separate character journey. Neither feature makes the underlying build system deeper, but both reduce friction for a regular co-op group.

Live-service trade-offs

Diablo IV’s seasons and expansions affect the current experience. That can bring new reasons to return, but it also means the best activity, build or progression route may change over time. A guide written for one season should not be treated as a permanent description of the game.

Pick Diablo IV when you value a maintained world, social activities and a finished presentation more than maximum control over every skill. If your priority is deterministic item improvement and per-skill experimentation, Last Epoch is the more focused choice. If you want a campaign you can own as a stable, self-contained experience, Grim Dawn avoids the seasonal-service question.

Grim Dawn: the self-contained campaign and co-op choice

Systems for players who enjoy long-term character planning

Grim Dawn’s Steam listing highlights complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting and quests with choices and consequences. That combination gives the game a traditional action-RPG identity: your character grows through deliberate specialization, equipment hunting and decisions made during the campaign rather than through a shared-world schedule.

Hundreds of unique items create a collecting game as well as a combat game. Crafting provides an additional use for materials and unwanted equipment, while choice-and-consequence quests make the campaign more than a sequence of identical combat rooms. The result is a good fit for someone who wants to explore a world at their own pace and keep a character for a long time without needing a seasonal reset.

Solo, LAN and online play

Grim Dawn lists single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op. That is the clearest option here for a group that specifically wants LAN support, and it also works for a player who mostly plays alone. You can approach the campaign privately, invite friends online or use a local network without converting the game into a shared public world.

Because the game’s structure is campaign-first, co-op partners are joining the same adventure rather than meeting primarily for open-world events. This is ideal for a small group that wants to make progress together. It is less suitable for someone who expects a continuously changing seasonal service with a large public population.

The age of the presentation

Grim Dawn released on February 25, 2016. Its age is relevant to expectations: the presentation and interface are more traditional than those of newer action RPGs, and its campaign structure is not designed around the latest live-service conventions. That is a trade-off, not automatically a weakness. A stable campaign, LAN support and mature item systems may be exactly what a player wants after spending time in an Early Access or seasonal game.

Choose Grim Dawn when ownership of a complete-feeling adventure, build complexity and flexible co-op matter more than cutting-edge visuals or a constantly refreshed endgame.

Titan Quest II: a conditional Early Access pick

Why the setting is the main attraction

Titan Quest II is the option for players whose first requirement is Greek mythology. Current coverage dated August 4, 2025 describes it as a Greek-mythology action RPG in Early Access. That setting gives it a different identity from the dark-fantasy worlds associated with Path of Exile 2, Last Epoch, Diablo IV and Grim Dawn.

A setting can be a decisive reason to play an action RPG, especially when the mythology, enemies and locations are the part that motivates you to keep exploring. If the Greek world is what you want, Titan Quest II may be worth considering even before it has the same amount of documented content as a long-established game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why you should verify its status first

Early Access means the available content, systems and roadmap can change. The cited material does not establish a final class count, a complete crafting model, a definitive endgame structure or a permanent multiplayer specification. Do not buy it expecting those details to match Path of Exile 2 or the other recommendations.

Before choosing Titan Quest II, check the current store description, update notes and roadmap. Treat it as a conditional purchase for readers comfortable with an unfinished product whose direction may evolve, not as the safest all-purpose replacement.

How the four games compare on the decisions that matter

Decision Last Epoch Diablo IV Grim Dawn Titan Quest II
Skill and build customization More than 130 skills and an augment tree for each skill are explicitly listed. Skill trees are listed; the game emphasizes a polished shared-world experience. Complex character development is listed, with traditional specialization and item-driven progression. Not established by the cited material; verify current Early Access systems.
Loot and crafting Randomized loot plus deterministic crafting. Legendary loot is listed; the cited material does not establish a comparable deterministic crafting model. Hundreds of unique items and crafting. Not stated; verify current systems.
Campaign and endgame Monolith of Fate, Arena and Dungeons provide named repeatable activities. Open-world play and nightmarish dungeons within a live-service structure. Self-contained campaign with choice-and-consequence quests. Early Access content and roadmap are subject to change.
Solo and co-op Specific modes are not stated in the cited feature summary; verify current support. Shared-world play, cross-play and cross-progression are listed. Single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op are listed. Current multiplayer details are not established by the cited material.
Release and monetization context Patch, season and storefront status can change. Seasons and expansions affect the current experience. Released February 25, 2016; campaign-first structure. Early Access, with current scope requiring verification.
Setting and feel Build-focused dark-fantasy action RPG. Polished open world with shared activities. Older, self-contained dark-fantasy campaign. Greek mythology in development.

Choose by priority instead of by hype

If build experimentation comes first

Start with Last Epoch. The documented combination of more than 130 skills, per-skill augment trees and deterministic crafting directly addresses the desire to test an idea and refine it. Keep Grim Dawn in consideration if you prefer making those decisions inside a fixed campaign and collecting distinctive items over a long playthrough.

If your group needs shared-world convenience

Choose Diablo IV. Its open world, shared-world activities, cross-play and cross-progression are the clearest match for a group that plays on different supported platforms or wants social activity outside instanced dungeons.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a complete-feeling campaign

Choose Grim Dawn. Its single-player, online and LAN modes let you decide how private the adventure should be, while its item and quest systems give the campaign enough complexity to reward repeat play.

If setting matters more than system certainty

Consider Titan Quest II only after checking its current Early Access build. The Greek-mythology premise is the differentiator; the evidence available here is not sufficient to promise a finished progression or endgame experience.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Write down your non-negotiable mode. If LAN is required, Grim Dawn is the only game in this comparison with LAN co-op explicitly listed. If cross-play and cross-progression are required, Diablo IV is the listed option.
  2. Decide how much randomness you enjoy. Last Epoch is the clearest choice when you want randomized drops but also want deterministic crafting to move toward a target.
  3. Choose campaign or service. Grim Dawn is campaign-first; Diablo IV is shaped by seasons and expansions; Last Epoch combines its progression with repeatable activities; Titan Quest II is still in Early Access.
  4. Set your tolerance for changing systems. Early Access and live-service games can alter content and progression. A mature campaign reduces that uncertainty.
  5. Pick the setting you will actually want to revisit. Greek mythology, a shared open world and traditional dark fantasy create different reasons to keep playing even when the combat loop is familiar.

Bottom line for Path of Exile 2 fans

Last Epoch is the best all-round recommendation because its documented skill breadth, per-skill customization, randomized loot and deterministic crafting most directly answer the build-and-item questions that bring players to Path of Exile 2. Diablo IV is the better social choice, with an open shared world and explicit cross-platform features. Grim Dawn is the dependable campaign alternative for solo players and LAN or online groups who want complex systems without a seasonal service. Titan Quest II is a setting-led Early Access gamble rather than a proven one-for-one substitute.
