Best Games Like Gears of War for Fans of Cinematic Third-Person Shooters

Gears of War: Reloaded is the closest match for the series’ cover movement, squad combat and co-op campaign. Gears of War: E-Day is the current first-party choice, while UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, The Last of Us Part I and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 each reproduce a different part of the Gears appeal: cinematic set pieces, brutal action, emotional solo storytelling or an ongoing online shooter.

What makes a game feel like Gears of War?

“Games like Gears of War” can mean several different things. Some players want a character who snaps between chest-high walls, advances by shifting from cover to cover and fights as part of a squad. Others mainly want a bombastic campaign with dramatic cutscenes, memorable enemies and large action set pieces. A third group wants online co-op that can sustain a group after the story ends.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The Gears formula is unusually specific. The Xbox description calls it a “3rd Person Cover-Shooter,” and the series is built around four connected pillars identified by The Coalition: movement, cover, weapons and enemies. Cover is not decorative scenery; moving between pieces of cover is central to campaign, Horde and Versus play. That distinction matters when choosing an alternative. A game can be cinematic without having Gears-style cover, or have third-person shooting without the same rhythm of advancing, flanking, reviving and managing a squad.

1. Gears of War: Reloaded — the closest match

Why it fits

If your favorite part of Gears is the feel of the original formula, start here. PlayStation presents Reloaded as the “original third-person cover shooter,” making it the most direct answer for players who want movement between barricades, coordinated squad firefights, weapon management and the campaign’s co-op structure rather than a merely similar camera angle.

The attraction is consistency. Encounters are organized around reading the battlefield, choosing the next safe position, suppressing enemies and moving at the right moment. That gives the campaign a distinct tempo: bursts of intense shooting are separated by decisions about angle, distance and exposure. Games that focus only on cinematic spectacle often lack this tactical movement layer; Reloaded keeps it at the center.

Co-op and play formats

The PlayStation listing specifies solo, split-screen and online co-op story play. That makes Reloaded the strongest recommendation for a household that wants couch co-op, a regular online partner or the option to play alone without changing the campaign’s identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Split-screen is particularly important if your definition of “like Gears” includes sharing a television rather than joining through separate consoles. Check the edition and platform listing you intend to buy, because local and online features can be presented differently by region or storefront.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want the most faithful cover-and-squad experience.
  • Groups looking for a co-op story rather than a permanent live-service loop.
  • Fans who prefer the original formula over a new setting or a different genre emphasis.

Reloaded is not the choice for someone seeking a completely new universe or a large open-ended service game. It is the choice when “Gears-like” means the mechanics themselves.

2. Gears of War: E-Day — the current first-party option

Story and setting

E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the events that shape their partnership. That makes it both a prequel and an entry point: you get a new story in the same universe while remaining close to the characters and conflict that define the franchise.

Xbox lists an October 6, 2026 release date. With the current date after that launch, E-Day is the relevant first-party option for readers who want a newly released campaign rather than a remastered presentation of the original. Availability can still vary by storefront and region, so verify the listing for your account before purchasing.

How the cover system is changing

The Coalition says the rebuilt cover system supports more cover types and movement options, including sliding, climbing, cover gaps and weapon changes, while retaining the series’ intensity. Its description is explicit: “Gears of War defined the third-person cover shooter and we’ve refined the formula, focusing on the core Gears pillars: movement, cover, weapons and enemies.”

That wording signals an evolution, not a genre switch. E-Day is intended for players who want the familiar cover-to-cover foundation with additional ways to navigate an encounter. More movement options can help you approach a fight from a new angle, escape a bad position or connect separate pieces of cover without abandoning the deliberate rhythm that distinguishes Gears from a run-and-gun shooter.

Modes and platforms

The Xbox listing includes solo, split-screen and up-to-four-player online campaign play. It also lists Horde Siege and Versus modes, giving a group reasons to continue after the story. The listed platforms are Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Game Pass access shown on the Xbox page. Confirm the exact plan, edition and regional availability at checkout; subscription catalogs and commercial terms can change.

Choose E-Day when you want the newest same-universe campaign, modernized traversal and a broad multiplayer package. Choose Reloaded when preserving the original game’s exact feel matters more than playing the current release.

3. UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy — the best cinematic-adventure substitute

What it shares with Gears

UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy is a better match for the word cinematic than for the word cover. Sony describes a character-led adventure starring Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross in India’s Western Ghats, combining combat with exploration, traversal, puzzles and action set pieces. The campaign is structured like an interactive action film: characters move through dramatic locations, solve environmental problems and transition into large, choreographed encounters.

There is still third-person shooting and the opportunity to use the environment during fights, but the experience frequently changes activity. A sequence may move from climbing to a puzzle, then to stealth or an explosive set piece. That variety is the reason to choose it, not a flaw to overlook. If you want every encounter to revolve around barricades and squad positioning, Reloaded or E-Day is a better fit.

Platforms and campaign focus

The official page lists PS4 and PS5 availability and a 2017 release. It is a single-player adventure centered on Chloe and Nadine, so it does not replace Gears’ split-screen or online campaign co-op. The reward is a tightly authored journey with strong character interplay and a changing pace.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose it when…

  • You want spectacular locations, traversal and puzzles between firefights.
  • You value character relationships and cinematic presentation over mechanical fidelity.
  • You are happy with a solo campaign rather than a co-op shooter.

Think of The Lost Legacy as a neighboring branch of the same action-adventure tree, not a Gears clone. It matches the presentation and set-piece side of the request while deliberately broadening the activities around combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 — heavier and more aggressive

Its combat identity

Space Marine 2 is for the player who remembers Gears primarily as brutal, physical third-person action. PlayStation describes intense violence, online support, a Warhammer 40,000 setting and a 2024 release for the PS5 edition. The power fantasy is direct: you control a heavily armed super-soldier confronting overwhelming enemies at close range.

The difference is the combat distance and rhythm. Gears asks you to manage exposure and move carefully between cover points. Space Marine 2 is more comfortable pushing into the enemy, combining firearms with forceful close-quarters attacks and sustained pressure. You can still use positioning and the environment intelligently, but the ideal moment often involves advancing into danger rather than waiting for a safe lane between barriers.

Online play and platform note

The PlayStation listing identifies online support and a purchasable PS5 edition. Confirm whether the edition you select includes every mode you want and whether your platform requires an online subscription for console multiplayer. The available information establishes online play, but it does not establish a specific player-count promise for every mode.

Best fit

Pick Space Marine 2 if you want a more aggressive, close-quarters interpretation of cinematic third-person combat. Do not pick it expecting a one-to-one reproduction of Gears’ cover cadence. Its appeal is scale, brutality and momentum in the Warhammer universe.

5. The Last of Us Part I — the solo, story-first choice

Why it appeals to Gears fans

The Last of Us Part I is a recommendation for readers whose favorite Gears moments are the quiet character scenes, tense movement through dangerous spaces and emotional consequences between major battles. PlayStation describes a story in which Joel escorts Ellie across a ravaged civilization, emphasizing emotional storytelling and memorable characters.

Combat is subordinate to the journey. Encounters reward caution, resource awareness and using the environment, but the central promise is a focused narrative rather than a co-op action campaign or a competitive mode. The tone is also more intimate and grounded than Gears’ militarized spectacle.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Platforms and player count

The official listing identifies PS5 and PC versions and one-player offline play. That means it is a poor substitute if your purchase depends on split-screen or online story co-op. It is an excellent substitute if you want a polished, linear campaign whose dramatic relationships carry as much weight as its firefights.

Choose it when…

  • You want an authored solo story rather than a repeatable multiplayer loop.
  • You value character development and atmosphere over constant action.
  • You prefer stealth, scarcity and tension to a heavy arsenal and squad banter.

The Last of Us Part I matches the emotional and cinematic ambition of Gears while intentionally changing the scale, tone and multiplayer expectations.

6. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 — the ongoing-service cover-shooter lane

Why it belongs on the list

The Division 2 is the conditional pick for players who want to keep returning to an online third-person shooter. Ubisoft’s current page shows seasonal events, downloadable-content announcements, player-versus-player updates and crossplay-related news in October 2026. That activity points to a continuing service-game structure rather than a campaign that ends when the credits roll.

Its cover-based shooting makes the comparison understandable, but the surrounding design is different. Progression, gear, repeatable activities and live updates shape the experience. Encounters are often built around managing enemy positions from cover, yet the long-term loop asks you to improve equipment and participate in changing online content.

What to verify before buying

Service-game details change frequently. Check the current platform list, required online access, edition contents, pricing, season status, downloadable-content availability and crossplay rules on the live store page. The October 2026 activity confirms an active update cycle, but it should not be treated as a permanent promise about future seasons or modes.

Who should choose it

Choose The Division 2 if your priority is a continuing online ecosystem with friends. Choose Reloaded or E-Day if you want a self-contained Gears-style campaign whose structure does not depend on seasonal content.

Choose by the feature you miss most

If you miss moving from cover to cover

Choose Reloaded first and E-Day second. Both are built around the Gears relationship between movement, cover, weapons and enemies. The other four games may use environmental positioning, but none is presented as the same mechanical continuation.

If you miss playing a campaign with friends

Reloaded supports solo, split-screen and online story play. E-Day supports solo, split-screen and up to four-player online campaign play. Those are the clearest matches for a co-op story. Space Marine 2 and The Division 2 offer online support, but their formats and mode details serve different purposes; verify the exact edition and current rules before purchase.

If you miss blockbuster set pieces

The Lost Legacy is the strongest alternative because exploration, traversal, puzzles and cinematic action are all part of its design. E-Day also offers the franchise’s large-scale presentation, but it remains the better choice when cover combat is non-negotiable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you miss brutal combat

Space Marine 2 shifts the emphasis toward aggressive close-range action and a heavier Warhammer setting. It is a better fit than The Lost Legacy or The Last of Us Part I when physical impact and constant pressure matter more than a carefully paced adventure.

If you want a serious solo narrative

The Last of Us Part I is the focused choice. The Lost Legacy is also solo and cinematic, but it is an adventurous treasure-hunt story with more traversal and puzzle solving. Select between them by tone: intimate and emotional for The Last of Us Part I, adventurous and globe-spanning for The Lost Legacy.

If you want a game that keeps changing online

The Division 2 is the only recommendation here whose defining advantage is an ongoing service structure. Seasonal events, downloadable content and player-versus-player updates can give an established group a reason to return. That same structure means you must check current availability and costs rather than relying on a launch-era description.

Platform and purchase checks

Platform is a practical filter before any preference discussion. E-Day is listed for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Game Pass access shown by Xbox. The Lost Legacy is listed for PS4 and PS5. Space Marine 2 has a purchasable PS5 edition listed. The Last of Us Part I is listed for PS5 and PC. Reloaded’s PlayStation listing identifies the PS5 version and its story-play options. The Division 2’s current platform, season and pricing details should be checked on the live Ubisoft listing because service information changes.

For a physical purchase, use the exact product name shown by the relevant store, such as “Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Series X game,” and confirm the seller, condition, region and included edition. Retail inventory and regional pricing are account- and time-dependent, so a search result is not a guarantee of stock or a specific price.

Also check the following before you pay:

  • Player count: Make sure “online support” means the campaign or mode you intend to play, not only a separate competitive activity.
  • Local play: Split-screen is specifically listed for Reloaded and E-Day; do not assume other recommendations include it.
  • Subscription access: A Game Pass listing can change by plan, region and date.
  • Edition contents: Deluxe or premium editions may package downloadable content differently from the standard version.
  • Online requirements: Console multiplayer may require the platform holder’s separate online service.

Bottom line: which game should you play?

Start with Gears of War: Reloaded if your test is mechanical: cover movement, squad combat and a co-op story. Choose Gears of War: E-Day if you want the current same-universe campaign, expanded traversal and up-to-four-player online play. Pick UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy for cinematic adventure, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 for relentless brutality, The Last of Us Part I for a solo emotional journey, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 for a continuing online shooter ecosystem.
