If End of Abyss appeals because it combines top-down sci-fi action horror, dangerous exploration and pressure to survive, start with Dead Space (2023), Alien: Isolation or Signalis. Each offers a different part of that appeal: grotesque threats and equipment upgrades, sustained tension around a hostile alien, or psychological science-fiction dread. None is a direct match for End of Abyss’s top-down metroidvania structure.
What makes a game like End of Abyss?
End of Abyss is described by its developers as a top-down metroidvania with action-horror elements. The official PlayStation listing presents a descent through a sprawling complex, where players fight threats, upgrade gear, use a scanner and unlocked tools, and reopen routes to hidden areas. That combination—not simply a science-fiction setting—is the useful basis for comparing alternatives.

Three recommendations, depending on what you want
| Game | Best match for | Where it differs from End of Abyss |
|---|---|---|
| Dead Space (2023) | Creature-filled sci-fi survival horror, a confined spaceship and equipment upgrades | Third-person survival horror rather than a top-down metroidvania |
| Alien: Isolation | Threat-focused tension and a hostile alien in a space-station setting | A comparison for atmosphere and danger, not a promise of similar combat or exploration |
| Signalis | Psychological, dystopian science-fiction survival horror | A thematic match with different presentation and mechanics |
Choose Dead Space (2023) for action and upgrades
The 2023 remake is the strongest pick if you want the creature encounters and equipment progression of sci-fi survival horror. Its setting is an abandoned starship, and its threats are alien abominations. Space.com’s February 23, 2026 feature describes its oppressive spaceship atmosphere and gear upgrades.
The important trade-off is perspective and structure: Dead Space is third-person survival horror, not a top-down metroidvania. Choose it for a more direct survival-horror comparison, not because its exploration loop is identical.
Choose Alien: Isolation for sustained threat and tension
If the most appealing part of End of Abyss is facing danger in an isolated sci-fi environment, Alien: Isolation is a natural atmosphere-first recommendation. It centers on a dangerous alien and a space-station setting. GamesRadar+’s 2026 sci-fi games feature lists the game and gives its release date as October 7, 2014.
Rank #2
- FACE THE LEVIATHANS: Adds a new Border Board and Leviathan cards to replace the threat track, introducing sea monster battles that add tension and excitement to every game.
- NEW LORDS AND ALLIES: Recruit powerful Lords and Allies with abilities designed to help you fight Leviathans and secure victory.
- GAIN EXTRA REWARDS: Defeat the most Leviathans to earn the statue token and gain 5 extra victory points at the end of the game.
- HIGH STAKES AND STRATEGY: Explore the depths carefully—fighting Leviathans is risky but rewarding, while fleeing may result in injury.
- EXPAND YOUR ABYSS EXPERIENCE: Requires the Abyss board game to play. Designed for 2-4 players, ages 14+, this expansion deepens strategy and gameplay.
This is not a recommendation for matching combat or map progression. Its value here is the pressure of a hostile presence and the station setting; the available sources do not establish a closer mechanical match.
Choose Signalis for psychological sci-fi horror
Signalis suits players who want the more unsettling, introspective end of science-fiction survival horror. The Science Fiction Research Association Review’s 2025 issue discusses its deep-space horror lineage and themes of artificial personhood, making it a thematic rather than structural comparison with End of Abyss.
Pick it for dystopian atmosphere and psychological dread, not for the same viewpoint, tools or metroidvania-style backtracking.
How to choose between them
- Want combat, grotesque enemies and gear upgrades? Start with Dead Space (2023).
- Want a tense encounter with a dangerous alien in a station? Try Alien: Isolation.
- Want dystopian mood and psychological themes? Choose Signalis.
- Want the top-down metroidvania combination itself? These are adjacent experiences, not confirmed one-to-one substitutes for End of Abyss.
Why these games fit the comparison
Section 9 Interactive creative director Anton Ottval described the inspirations behind End of Abyss to Xbox Wire this way: “We like the same kind of things, and it’s very much the things we grew up with, like the Alien movies, ‘The Thing.’” That comment helps explain the link to science-fiction horror traditions, but it does not mean the recommended games share the same mechanics.
Rank #4
- For 1-6 Players. 60-90 minute playing time
- The Assault Units, the Krohns, will advance towards Zone 1, and once there, they'll attack the Heroes on the wall and try to break into the Citadel
- Gargohs, the Support Units, will advance towards Zone 2 and, once there, they'll hit all Heroes in the Quarter they face
- Molens, the Heavy Units, will attack directly from Zone 3 and damage all Heroes and buildings in the Quarter they face
- Each monster figure on the board will activate and perform their actions according to its rank. The Heroes must coordinate their actions well to share resources
The best match depends on which element matters most to you: Dead Space emphasizes action-oriented survival horror and upgrades, Alien: Isolation emphasizes threat and tension, and Signalis emphasizes psychological and dystopian horror.
