The best substitute depends on which part of Cyberpunk 2077 you want to keep. Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for cyberpunk role-playing, augmentations, and stealth-or-combat approaches; The Ascent for fast action and cyberware customization; Cloudpunk for open-ended city exploration; and Citizen Sleeper for character-driven choices. If neon cyberpunk is optional, Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher 3, Starfield, and Baldur’s Gate 3 preserve particular parts of Cyberpunk’s quest, exploration, or build formula.
This guide compares those games by four things that make Cyberpunk 2077 distinctive: narrative agency and companion writing, exploration density and world structure, build flexibility, and combat perspective and tempo.

What makes Cyberpunk 2077 difficult to replace
Cyberpunk 2077 combines several formats that are often separated in other games. Its official description calls it an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in Night City. You play a cyberpunk mercenary who takes jobs, builds a reputation, and unlocks upgrades. The setting is not merely a backdrop: the official universe material emphasizes that choices can shape the story and the people around you.
That combination creates four separate expectations:

- Narrative agency: quests can be approached through decisions rather than a single linear route, and relationships with major characters matter to the experience.
- Dense exploration: Night City is a large, layered environment filled with missions, districts, and vertical routes rather than a simple map between story scenes.
- Build expression: skills, perks, cyberware, weapons, and other upgrades let you specialize in different ways to play.
- First-person action: shooting, hacking, stealth, driving, and movement happen in an immediate first-person format.
No alternative in this list reproduces all four elements at the same scale. The useful question is therefore not “Which game is Cyberpunk 2077 again?” but “Which Cyberpunk habit do I want to recover?”
Quick recommendations by priority
| Game | Best for | World structure | Build or choice emphasis | Combat perspective and tempo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deus Ex: Mankind Divided | Closest cyberpunk role-playing match | Dense hubs rather than one huge open world | Augmentations and multiple encounter approaches | First-person, deliberate stealth or combat |
| The Ascent | Action combat and cyberware customization | Cyberpunk districts built around missions | Combat-focused cyberware tuning | Isometric, fast action; solo or co-op |
| Cloudpunk | Atmosphere and free-form city roaming | Vertically structured, open-ended city exploration | Light build depth; progression is not the focus | Vehicle exploration with lighter combat |
| Citizen Sleeper | Consequences, dialogue, and character writing | Compact, story-led locations | Choices and role-playing decisions | Dialogue and turn-based structure rather than gunplay |
| Fallout: New Vegas | Quest choice and faction consequences | Open-world role-playing map | Broad character builds and quest solutions | First-person or third-person RPG combat |
| The Witcher 3 | Companion writing and quest storytelling | Large regions with dense side content | Signs, equipment, and skill choices | Third-person real-time sword combat |
| Starfield | Exploration across a wide science-fiction setting | Many locations connected across a spacefaring structure | Skills and equipment support varied roles | First-person or third-person shooting |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Maximum choice and buildcraft | Large, hand-authored adventure areas | Classes, abilities, party composition, and choices | Turn-based tactical combat |
The table is a selection tool, not a quality ranking. A game can be a poor substitute for one Cyberpunk feature and an excellent replacement for another.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the closest cyberpunk build-and-approach match
Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided when your favorite Cyberpunk moments involve deciding how to enter a location, investing in augmentations, and solving a problem without being forced into a firefight. GamesRadar describes it as a cyberpunk RPG built around skill trees and multiple ways to approach encounters.
Why it fits Cyberpunk players
- Augmentation-led identity: your upgrades are not just damage bonuses. They open routes, information, stealth options, and alternative solutions, so character development changes how spaces can be read and navigated.
- Stealth-versus-combat decisions: encounters support different levels of force. You can plan around infiltration and tools, or commit to direct action when that better suits your build.
- Dense cyberpunk setting: the world is concentrated into detailed urban spaces. It rewards looking behind the obvious objective even though it does not offer Cyberpunk 2077’s enormous continuous open world.
What you give up
The trade-off is scale and tempo. Mankind Divided is better understood as a sequence of dense hubs and authored missions than as a vast city where every district is designed for long-distance wandering. Its encounters are more deliberate, and its immersive-sim structure asks you to inspect environments and plan. If your priority is driving across a huge map or clearing activities quickly, it will feel narrower. If your priority is meaningful approach choices, it is the strongest direct match in this group.
The Ascent delivers action combat plus cyberware customization
The Ascent is the practical choice for readers who want a cyberpunk setting but spend most of their time thinking about combat loadouts. Its developer describes it as a solo and co-op action-shooter RPG in a cyberpunk world.
Where it is strongest
The game’s clearest connection to Cyberpunk 2077 is cyberware customization used to shape combat. You can tune a build around the way you want fights to flow, then combine active and passive tools as missions become more demanding. The isometric camera changes the sensation completely: you read arenas from above rather than inhabiting a first-person body, and the action is faster and more arcade-like.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
Why co-op changes the experience
Because it supports both solo play and co-op, The Ascent adds a social option that a strictly solo Cyberpunk campaign does not provide. Playing with another person can make build choices complementary instead of purely personal: one player can emphasize a different combat role while the other covers weaknesses. Solo play remains available if you want to experiment without coordinating.

The important compromise
The Ascent should not be chosen for Cyberpunk’s companion-driven storytelling or first-person immersion. Its strength is the loop of movement, shooting, loot, and cyberware tuning. The setting supplies atmosphere, but combat is the primary reason to return.
Cloudpunk is the exploration-first alternative
Pick Cloudpunk when the part you miss is moving through a neon city and absorbing its scale, sound, and vertical layout. GamesRadar characterizes it as an open-ended, story-based exploration game set in a vertically structured cyberpunk city.
What exploration means here
Cloudpunk treats the city itself as the attraction. Its vertical structure encourages you to look up, move between layers, and follow the shape of the environment rather than simply crossing a flat open-world map. The open-ended format gives you room to roam and take in the atmosphere at your own pace.
Why it is not a Cyberpunk combat replacement
Combat and build depth are intentionally lighter. There is no reason to expect the same weapon experimentation, perk planning, or first-person firefight rhythm as Cyberpunk 2077. The reward is closer to inhabiting a place than optimizing a mercenary. Choose Cloudpunk for city mood and movement; do not choose it because you want a deeper combat tree.

Citizen Sleeper is the recommendation for readers who describe Cyberpunk 2077 primarily as a story about people, obligations, and consequences. GamesRadar includes it among cyberpunk RPG recommendations and highlights its story- and character-focused structure.

Its version of agency
Citizen Sleeper makes dialogue, relationships, and decisions the central activities. The game asks you to consider what a choice means for specific characters and how short-term needs can conflict with longer-term goals. That focus can deliver the feeling of role-playing a person in a pressured system without requiring first-person shooting.
The format shift
Expect a more compact, text-led experience rather than an explorable action sandbox. The setting and atmosphere remain important, but the tempo comes from conversations and decisions. Build variety is expressed through role-playing choices and how you handle situations, not through a large arsenal or a broad combat loadout. It is the best fit when narrative consequence matters more than kinetic play.
Broader RPG alternatives when cyberpunk aesthetics are optional
Four non-cyberpunk games are useful because each preserves a different Cyberpunk habit. They should be selected by system, not by surface resemblance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fallout: New Vegas — quest choice and faction consequences
Choose Fallout: New Vegas if you want an open-world RPG where quests can intersect with competing interests and your decisions can alter how groups and characters respond. It offers the kind of systems-first role-playing that appeals to players who enjoy solving a problem through dialogue, allegiance, exploration, or combat rather than following one predetermined route.
Its post-apocalyptic setting replaces Night City’s neon corporate atmosphere, so the match is about agency and world reactivity. It is especially suitable if your favorite Cyberpunk sessions involve wandering away from the main objective, finding a local conflict, and deciding which outcome you support.
The Witcher 3 — companion writing and authored quests
The Witcher 3 is the stronger choice when companion relationships, long-form quest writing, and memorable side stories matter more than character-build experimentation. Its large regions combine a main narrative with substantial optional content, giving exploration a story-led purpose.
Rank #4
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK - Become an urban outlaw equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City.
- EXPLORE THE CITY OF THE FUTURE - Night City is packed to the brim with things to do, places to see, and people to meet. And it’s up to you where to go, when to go, and how to get there.
- BUILD YOUR LEGEND - Go on daring adventures and build relationships with unforgettable characters whose fates are shaped by the choices you make.
- DECIDE HOW THE STORY ENDS - Your choices in the base game and the spy-thriller adventure Phantom Liberty create interweaving webs of consequences, ones that shape the fate of the characters around you — and your own.
- CLAIM EXCLUSIVE ITEMS - Claim in-game swag & digital goodies inspired by CD PROJEKT RED games as part of the My Rewards program.
The third-person perspective and sword-focused combat create a different physical feel from Cyberpunk’s first-person gunplay. The relevant overlap is the density of authored quests and the way personal decisions can affect the people around the protagonist.
Starfield — broad science-fiction exploration
Select Starfield when your priority is exploring a wide science-fiction setting and building a character who can specialize in different roles. Its structure spreads discovery across many locations connected by a spacefaring framework, making the sense of travel different from driving through one continuous metropolis.
It can satisfy the urge to scan a horizon for the next destination, collect equipment, and adjust skills, but it does not reproduce Night City’s concentrated urban density. The match is breadth and science-fiction role-playing rather than cyberpunk social texture.
Baldur’s Gate 3 — the deepest choice and buildcraft option
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best broad alternative for readers who want decisions to reshape quests and who enjoy rebuilding a character or party around a specific plan. Classes, abilities, party composition, and environmental problem-solving give it unusually wide build variety.
Its turn-based tactical combat is the largest mechanical departure from Cyberpunk 2077. Battles slow down so you can assess positions and actions, while dialogue and exploration offer many authored branches. Choose it for agency and buildcraft, not for real-time shooting or a cyberpunk city.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare the four things you may actually be missing
1. Narrative agency and companion writing
For a close cyberpunk tone with approach-based role-playing, start with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. For character-focused consequences with almost no emphasis on gunplay, choose Citizen Sleeper. For extensive companion and side-quest writing in another setting, The Witcher 3 is the better fit. For the widest party and quest permutations, Baldur’s Gate 3 goes further but changes combat to turn-based tactics.

2. Exploration density and world structure
Cloudpunk is the clearest exploration-first choice because its vertical city is the main attraction. Fallout: New Vegas and The Witcher 3 offer open-world wandering with quests distributed across a larger map. Starfield provides the broadest science-fiction travel structure, but its locations are spread across a wider framework rather than concentrated in one city. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided favors dense hubs and layered spaces over sheer map size.
3. Build and skill flexibility
Deus Ex expresses builds through augmentations that change access and problem-solving. The Ascent centers customization on combat cyberware. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the widest formal buildcraft through classes, abilities, and party combinations. Fallout: New Vegas supports systems-oriented character specialization, while Citizen Sleeper expresses role-playing through decisions rather than a large equipment tree.
4. Combat perspective and tempo
Choose Deus Ex or Starfield if first-person play is important. The Ascent is the most immediate action alternative, but its isometric view and faster arena rhythm make it feel unlike a first-person shooter. The Witcher 3 uses third-person real-time melee combat. Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based tactics. Cloudpunk and Citizen Sleeper are the right choices only when combat can be secondary.

A practical decision path
- Decide whether the setting is essential. If you need cyberpunk themes, limit your shortlist to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, The Ascent, Cloudpunk, and Citizen Sleeper. If the systems matter more than neon aesthetics, include the broader RPGs.
- Choose your preferred activity. Select Deus Ex for solving encounters, The Ascent for fighting, Cloudpunk for roaming, or Citizen Sleeper for conversations and consequences.
- Set your tolerance for format changes. First-person action narrows the field. Isometric combat points to The Ascent; third-person melee points to The Witcher 3; turn-based tactics points to Baldur’s Gate 3; a dialogue-led structure points to Citizen Sleeper.
- Decide how much build experimentation you need. For upgrades that alter routes and tactics, use Deus Ex. For combat tuning, use The Ascent. For formal party and class combinations, use Baldur’s Gate 3. For lighter progression, prioritize Cloudpunk or Citizen Sleeper for their atmosphere and narrative strengths.
- Prefer the game whose compromise you can accept. Every substitute removes at least one Cyberpunk pillar. The right choice is the one that protects your most important pillar instead of offering a shallow imitation of all four.
Buying note for returning to Cyberpunk 2077

Final verdict
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the closest match for Cyberpunk 2077’s cyberpunk role-playing, augmentations, and choice of approach. The Ascent is the answer for action combat and cyberware tuning, especially if co-op matters. Cloudpunk preserves the pleasure of exploring a vertical neon city, while Citizen Sleeper preserves cyberpunk character drama and consequential dialogue. Outside the genre, choose Fallout: New Vegas for quest agency, The Witcher 3 for companion writing, Starfield for broad science-fiction exploration, or Baldur’s Gate 3 for the most ambitious choice-and-build system.
