If you want another RPG with Chrono Trigger’s classic feel and interest in different eras, start with LIVE A LIVE. For modernized turn-based combat and exploration, choose Sea of Stars; for a larger ensemble cast and classic-JRPG systems, try Octopath Traveler II. They overlap with Chrono Trigger in different ways: none should be mistaken for a direct substitute for its time-travel story.

Which game is the closest match for what you liked about Chrono Trigger?

If you want… Try… Why it fits—and where it differs
Stories set across multiple eras LIVE A LIVE Its separate stories take place in seven time periods, with an eighth story unlocked after completing the initial seven. It is an era-spanning anthology, not one continuous time-travel adventure like Chrono Trigger.
Classic-style turn-based play with modern presentation Sea of Stars It draws on classic RPG conventions and adds timed combat inputs and free-form exploration. Its premise follows two Children of the Solstice, rather than a time-traveling party.
A party of distinct protagonists and tactical turn-based combat Octopath Traveler II Its eight travelers, linked stories, and Boost and Break systems make it a strong classic-JRPG companion. The available description does not make it a time-travel match.

LIVE A LIVE is the pick for stories across eras

LIVE A LIVE is the most direct recommendation if Chrono Trigger’s movement through different periods is what you want to revisit. Square Enix describes seven stories, each with its own time period, protagonist, and gameplay variation. You can choose the order in which to play those stories; finishing the initial seven unlocks an eighth, set in the Middle Ages. That structure gives the game its era-spanning appeal, though it is not the same kind of single, connected time-travel plot as Chrono Trigger.

There is also a creative connection: Nintendo’s publisher description identifies Takashi Tokita as a producer of LIVE A LIVE and lists Chrono Trigger among his credits. That link may make it especially interesting to fans, but it does not mean the games have identical stories or systems.

The cited Nintendo UK page lists a Nintendo Switch download version, a release date of 22 July 2022, a 4.7 GB download size, and regional language and age-rating details. Square Enix’s page presents physical and digital version selectors; those selectors do not confirm stock or availability in a particular country.

Sea of Stars modernizes the classic turn-based formula

Choose Sea of Stars if you want the feel of a classic-style RPG in a newer presentation, rather than a story built around time travel. PlayStation describes it as a modernized classic RPG. Its story centers on two Children of the Solstice whose powers combine into Eclipse Magic.

Combat uses timed action-button presses: synchronized inputs can increase damage dealt and reduce damage received. The official description also names combo attacks, boosting, and a “locks” system. Exploration is more than walking between battles; the listed activities include swimming, climbing, vaulting, jumping, sailing, cooking, and fishing. PlayStation also highlights no random encounters and no battle transitions.

Octopath Traveler II suits fans of ensemble JRPGs

Octopath Traveler II is worth considering if you enjoyed Chrono Trigger’s party dynamic but are open to a different story premise. TechRadar’s 24 October 2025 guide describes eight travelers, turn-based combat built around Boost and Break, linked stories, and towns that change between day and night. Those features make it an adjacent classic-JRPG recommendation, not the strongest choice when time travel itself is your priority.

Square Enix also maintains an official series page, but the cited material does not establish a current platform list for Octopath Traveler II. Confirm the version for your system and region with the relevant store.
